The first Digest of the season finds us purring over Chelseaโ€™s new Belgian, throwing admiring glances in the direction of the Liberty Stadium and daring to question Fantasy royaltyโ€ฆ

The Player

Eden Hazard is proving impossible to ignore. His first Premier League from the spot against Newcastle represented a milestone and yet Hazard had already cemented a place on our watchlists with a string of assists amidst two dazzling displays prior to Saturdayโ€™s game. Six assists in total have lifted Hazard to the top of the points rankings across the games and have left us in little doubt that the Belgian is a rare talent with Fantasy points simply spilling from him.

Hazard always had the potential to establish himself as a Fantasy darling. He arrived at Stamford Bridge off the back of a season for Lille which had seem him fetch 20 goals and 15 assists; clearly that signposted him as a player who could deliver returns on all fronts.

Few will have anticipated the impact that Hazard has made, however. So much is made of the pace and power of the Premier League and yet Hazardโ€™s transition from Ligue 1 has been seamless โ€“ his productivity in England similarly spectacular.

Despite facing a blank in Gameweek 3, Hazard goes on attracting new suitors โ€“ Fantasy managers intent on benching their new capture, rather than risk his price escalating beyond affordable levels. Those without Hazard at this moment in time will be looking at their budget with some concern, knowing full well that he has become the first player to emerge as an โ€œessentialโ€.

While Fernando Torres does all he can to present an alternative option amongst Chelseaโ€™s new attacking verve, Hazard looks to be the real prize, freeing up a precious forward slot in the process.

The Team

Eight goals scored, none conceded. Against that backdrop, Michael Laudrupโ€™s Swansea are maintaining their expansive football of last season and have added a cutting edge. The goals are flowing at one end, while Michel Vorm remains a formidable barrier in front of a settled and assured back four at the other.

Laudrupโ€™s side have surprised me. I saw a transition phase, a period of settling in while Laudrupโ€™s new signings gelled and the hangover from the departure of Joe Allen and Gylfi Sigurdsson subsided. Neither have surfaced; instead Laudrup appears to have injected new spirit and conjured tactical tweaks that have allowed both Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge to become key figures, rather than peripheral touchline huggers.

Elsewhere, Angel Rangel scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday, helping him to the top scoring mantle in the Gameweek. A polished and skillful full-back, weโ€™ve long backed his potential as a Fantasy asset and the weekend showing may well, at last, be evidence of that materialising. Again, we perhaps only have to look to the belief and systems implemented by Laudrup to find the catalyst for such an upturn.

The Talking Point

Itโ€™s ironic that, over the past twelve months, Robin Van Persie has presented Fantasy managers with security, an assurance that, above all others, heโ€™s the best source of returns in a given Gameweek. And yet, Saturdayโ€™s first start in United colours, capped by his fine strike after just 10 minutes, has now created uncertainty and insecurity. Fantasy managers will be processing their thoughts, pondering if they can afford to get him or, indeed, afford to be without him.

Van Persieโ€™s price tag is, without question, inflated to the extent that his value โ€“ points per million โ€“ is a concern. Personally Iโ€™ve no argument that Van Persie is overpriced given that his chances of replicating the form that earned him such a price tag look remote.

Having said that, the true value of Van Persie is that he solves the Captaincy conundrum week after week. Certainly, looking at Gameweek 3 ahead, with Chelseaโ€™s Hazard and Torres out of the equation, Van Persieโ€™s appeal and potential impact as an unlikely differential captain, is strong.

Thankfully, for those looking to bide their time, Carlos Tevez has the fixture and the form to present a solution but Van Persie proved last season that his return rate away from home can surpass all others โ€“ even an in-form Tevez. That consideration, together with the fact that Van Persie will likely assume spot-kick duties with Wayne Rooney sidelined, could well tip the balance. Indeed, those questioning the merits of Van Persie only have to ponder just how many of those with Wildcards active are set to go forward without the United striker. Weโ€™d wager not too many.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    DDG | Fed

    Fonte | Vetronghen | A.Cole | Gorkes | R.Bennet

    Hazzard | Bale | Nolan | Dyer | Gutrie
    Tevez | Rooney | Bent

So the crazy plan is: -8pts YES or NO

    Rooney -> RvP
    Bent -> Petric
    A.Cole -> Baines

the main problem is that I will not have even 10 players for next week (Rooney, Gorkes, Gutrie, A.Cole, Hazzard) not to mention terrible form of Bent.

    so, YES or NO

Had the same problem so wildcarded. Of my eleven players for next week two were Clyne and Fabio lol. I've refreshed the team and feel much more confident now.

      So far:

      Rooney>RVP
      Fabio>Angel
      Lamps>Kagawa
Federici>Rudd poss to save 0.5m if I get Howard
      Collocini>Cuellar poss

      and 1.0m spare for Siggy>Hazard GW4.

Depends if you're plumping for attack or defence. Their defensive problems probably helps more than hinders the attackers as they have to score more/play more attacking to win.

Which two defences would you say are the best to cover out of Stoke, Everton, Newcastle and Sunderland? Currently have Begovic and Collocini, with Hangeland and Rangel.

So basically, Begovic, Howard or Mignolet? And then stick with Collocini or swap to Cuellar and save 0.5m?

My theory is that at the beginning of the season it does make sense to do transfers for hits (even wc) in order to increase the team value - simply because it is so easy due to many transfers.

And these lost few points (for hist) are basically just a drop in the sea and irrelevant, since over the whole season we can gain even hundreds of points due to high team value.

    Anyone agrees?

      Not me.

The gap in sale-value (not teamvalue) between you and any other serious player would not be more than one million.
and you would be taking too many risks to achieve that. and very rarely is your entire teamvalue used so it will be even less than one million gap between you and another player. totally not worth it

well, I was not playing last year seriously, but my sale value at the end of season was ca.108 mil. Basically average, as most of other players had.

But at this point, after two GWS, my sale value this week will be already 1 mil (of course, generated only when i sell those players).

But, extra one or two milions over 2/3 of the season seems to be worth let us say, 12 points for hits.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that your highest increase in sale value would be on players whom you wouldnt want to sell.
So someone like Hazard you get for 9.5, and i get for 9.9. Doesn't cause any difference to me.
Even if he gets injured and everyone starts selling him, he will be fit again some time and we will all be buying him again so all your efforts would have gone to waste.
          Thats my opinion anyway.

Early transfers add a risk of players being injured midweek as well, although thats a risk i am willing to take at the start of the season.
But taking a hit for an early transfer and then finding out that he is injured would make we want to throw my laptop out the window

Sure, but you seem to ignore the fact that there is nothing like season keeper and at some point everyone will be sold. So, when times come to sell Hazard and buy other player in form, I can buy the one who is more expensive, since I earned i.e. 0.5.

I think you are more prone to taking hits early doors because you are more likely to balls up your selections too. You don't know how teams are going to line-up/perform after managerial and player changes. You're speculating a lot more than at any other point in the season as you're essentially wildcarding blind.

Later in the season you have a lot more to work with and are less likely to be lumped with multiple duffers whilst also missing out on all the top performers.

So I guess I kinda agree it's better to take transfers early doors but not for the exact same reasons. Although prices being more volatile does play into it somewhat as you can harbor deadwood or wait to transfer players in longer at later stages without fear of missing out due to price changes. At season start you don't always have that chance especially when a 0.1 swing can be effectively 0.5.

There is always the possibility that two (or more) of the top eight attacking players on any given game week will be from the same team. I find the widely held opinion on this site that you should only have one midfielder or attacker as "coverage" from a given team quite bizarre.

As an example, if you had Michu and Dyer in your team, you'd be doing pretty well after the first two game weeks. Other succesful combinations currently include Hazard & Torres (even taking into account them having played 3 matches), Tevez & Yaya Toure, Duff & Petric. Whilst I do not suggest you necessarily buy any of these combinations, to blanketly proceed with a one attacking player per team policy is rather naive. You need to maintain an element of flexibility within your squad (and have sufficient "star" players to choose from) in order to play the match-ups each week.

FYI - I currently have Yaya & Tevez and Michu & Graham combinations. This will likely change as the season progresses due to injuries/bans/form/fixtures.

        Just something to think about.

I meant, in case that it is problem for him to have Kag + RvP, he should buy only one.

On the other side, versatility is very important - eggs in more nests mean higher chance to get more chickens (= points).

You can shift Taarabt the following week though. Plus if you have to play him at least there's a chance of a Taarabt 2 pointer this week whereas Torres is getting 0. Obviously doesn't come into it if Taarabt will be rotting on your bench.

by the endo of the day i wish to swap clark for one of chico/williams/rangel.........

as ppl have suggested williams does attract baps due to blocks and clearances

rangel is attackin fb,, crosses/shoots tho his attackin returns werent huge last season..

chico, i know nothin about him

all 5.0 so good value at the mo, could get rangel just to catch the price rise and get the attacking upside

    what think??

Ivanovic out for Baines or Rafael for a -4pts ?

I know about the Rafael risk but he is cheaper ?

    Current team

    Vorm

    Zabalete Ivanovic fabio

    Hazard. Michu Maloney bale

    Tevez Torres graham(c)

    Fed cuellar taraabt Dawson

    Already done Torres/taraabt -> Rvp /kac

0.5m in bank , Dawson -> Rafael will be a perfect plan but I missed out Dawson 0.1 fall!

Do you think Ivanovic will lost his place for Azpilicueta?

I want to get Rangel in, but not sure for who?

If I do Ivanovic or Zabaleta to Rangel, I have funds to get Hazard in next week.

But I can also do Bennet to Rangel, but in that case I can't get Hazard without points hit.

Well, I'm not missing out on anything this week, right?

The only game I'll miss is QPR away who could well have a stronger back line by then. Meanwhile, the player I'd be replacing (Bale) has Reading away.

If I want to get him in now before any further price rises I'm costing myself two Bale games (NOR, rea) - if I wait until next week to just miss the one game I face the same price rise dilemma as I would waiting two weeks regardless, and still have to pay 4pts to downgrade elsewhere to afford him.

    Federici (Jaaskelainen)
Hangeland - Shawcross - Cuellar (Harte, Fabio)
Michu - Santi Cazorla - Kagawa - Silva (Guthrie)
    Tevez - Torres - Graham

Torres will become RVP this week and Silva will become Hazard next week.
