The first Digest of the season finds us purring over Chelsea’s new Belgian, throwing admiring glances in the direction of the Liberty Stadium and daring to question Fantasy royalty…

The Player

Eden Hazard is proving impossible to ignore. His first Premier League from the spot against Newcastle represented a milestone and yet Hazard had already cemented a place on our watchlists with a string of assists amidst two dazzling displays prior to Saturday’s game. Six assists in total have lifted Hazard to the top of the points rankings across the games and have left us in little doubt that the Belgian is a rare talent with Fantasy points simply spilling from him.

Hazard always had the potential to establish himself as a Fantasy darling. He arrived at Stamford Bridge off the back of a season for Lille which had seem him fetch 20 goals and 15 assists; clearly that signposted him as a player who could deliver returns on all fronts.

Few will have anticipated the impact that Hazard has made, however. So much is made of the pace and power of the Premier League and yet Hazard’s transition from Ligue 1 has been seamless – his productivity in England similarly spectacular.

Despite facing a blank in Gameweek 3, Hazard goes on attracting new suitors – Fantasy managers intent on benching their new capture, rather than risk his price escalating beyond affordable levels. Those without Hazard at this moment in time will be looking at their budget with some concern, knowing full well that he has become the first player to emerge as an “essential”.

While Fernando Torres does all he can to present an alternative option amongst Chelsea’s new attacking verve, Hazard looks to be the real prize, freeing up a precious forward slot in the process.

The Team

Eight goals scored, none conceded. Against that backdrop, Michael Laudrup’s Swansea are maintaining their expansive football of last season and have added a cutting edge. The goals are flowing at one end, while Michel Vorm remains a formidable barrier in front of a settled and assured back four at the other.

Laudrup’s side have surprised me. I saw a transition phase, a period of settling in while Laudrup’s new signings gelled and the hangover from the departure of Joe Allen and Gylfi Sigurdsson subsided. Neither have surfaced; instead Laudrup appears to have injected new spirit and conjured tactical tweaks that have allowed both Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge to become key figures, rather than peripheral touchline huggers.

Elsewhere, Angel Rangel scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday, helping him to the top scoring mantle in the Gameweek. A polished and skillful full-back, we’ve long backed his potential as a Fantasy asset and the weekend showing may well, at last, be evidence of that materialising. Again, we perhaps only have to look to the belief and systems implemented by Laudrup to find the catalyst for such an upturn.

The Talking Point

It’s ironic that, over the past twelve months, Robin Van Persie has presented Fantasy managers with security, an assurance that, above all others, he’s the best source of returns in a given Gameweek. And yet, Saturday’s first start in United colours, capped by his fine strike after just 10 minutes, has now created uncertainty and insecurity. Fantasy managers will be processing their thoughts, pondering if they can afford to get him or, indeed, afford to be without him.

Van Persie’s price tag is, without question, inflated to the extent that his value – points per million – is a concern. Personally I’ve no argument that Van Persie is overpriced given that his chances of replicating the form that earned him such a price tag look remote.

Having said that, the true value of Van Persie is that he solves the Captaincy conundrum week after week. Certainly, looking at Gameweek 3 ahead, with Chelsea’s Hazard and Torres out of the equation, Van Persie’s appeal and potential impact as an unlikely differential captain, is strong.

Thankfully, for those looking to bide their time, Carlos Tevez has the fixture and the form to present a solution but Van Persie proved last season that his return rate away from home can surpass all others – even an in-form Tevez. That consideration, together with the fact that Van Persie will likely assume spot-kick duties with Wayne Rooney sidelined, could well tip the balance. Indeed, those questioning the merits of Van Persie only have to ponder just how many of those with Wildcards active are set to go forward without the United striker. We’d wager not too many.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I had him captain all pre-season until the CC, then bottled it and took him out for Mata (C). If I'd left it I would have been 61st in the world after GW1.

The majority of my team have done excellent but that choice and Rooney over RVP (and c) in for Aguero GW2 have ruined my start.

Two awful captain hauls so far, two injured strikers, Tevez is new for both this week... Watch out Tevez owners!

Is this worth a 4 point hit?

Ivanovic -> S Taylor or Rangel

Both Taylor and Rangel have better fixtures going forward. However I already have Michu and Graham and three Swans may be overkill if they don't maintain form.

The problem with keeping Ivanovic means I have to play Demel in defense this week at home to Fulham.

    Any advice??

I'd probably stick with Ivan and play Demel. The defender you bring in would have to keep a cleanie and WHM concede for it to break even. Ivan's GW4 fixture is then better than SWA/NEW imo.

Yeah I know, cheers. I'd rather take the hit than play my WC though since if I was playing my WC I'd have wanted a few players in purely for value from Sat.

I'll just suck it up for now and hope it pays off. It wasn't a terrible 8 pointer, just kinda borderline and was rushed into it by rises/falls.

That's probably the current plan. Although if my team looks ok still at that point I might just try hold onto it until later in the season.

I was always going to need either a -4 or -8 to get RVP in anyway so it probably made the most sense to do it this week when I was struggling for an 11. I'm just griping as I hate taking hits, especially 8 pointers.

I have three swans a-swimming into game week three. They have good fixtures going forward and you can slowly move any if them out in a few weeks time if their form takes a turn for the worse. Also I'm benching Ivanovic. I don't want to move him out and frown struggle for the cash tiger him back in. There are enough other things to worry about!

RDM really likes Ramires for his work rate as well and Bertrand's always an option along with a load of others (Sturridge, Malouda etc.)

Can't see him getting enough starts to be a FPL prospect.

Is Terry+Larsson worth an 8pt hit for Saylor and Barfa? Think Barfa alone can cover the hit and set me up for future GWs.

Kaca is already on board. Just brought in RvP this gw, so Kagawa is now expendable given their fixtures. As is Nasri.

So those two out, plus Hazard in, minus 500k for Baines, leaves £6.7m for alternatives.

Part of me is thinking I should just say 'screw it' and forget the whole Hazard thing and hope the rest of my team makes it worthwhile.

For anyone that is completely against point hits, last week I did Hoilett and Mata > Michu and Kagawa for 4 points. 17 - 9 (5 points for players and 4 point hit) means an 8 point gain. I just halved that gain to swap Ivan and Torres for Rangel and Van Persie. Either way I still come out ahead, especially since in this case Hazard has taken over the behind the striker duties of Mata, the miss for GW3, and QPR look awful and they play City next week. Obviously can't be sure it will always pay off, but it's seriously worth considering on occasion...

79 this week, happy 2 good weeks to start off with, although next week looks destined to be doomed.

    Jussi

    Demel–Zabaleta-Jenkinson-Rafael

    Toure-Cazorla-Kagawa-Puncheon

    Tevez(c)-Defoe

    4 non players

is this good enough or should i take a hit on defoe/puncheon -4 (or both- -8)?

best option on a 5.5 mid?

The odds of that are pretty low as I don't see him rising by .3 after a blank. Maybe once.

It burns to get stick from casual players in my work leagues cause of one bad GW. Texting me all hours to rub it in. Bloody liberty.

I want to tell them that come GW38 they will be merely dust in my rear view mirror, but I'll take the higher ground... for now.

    Hi,

Could everyone please stop transferring Hazard in? He's had over 17,000 transfers in today and he's not even playing this week.

Let's try to keep his price price below 10.5 by the time we get back from the international break, shall we?

He is a season keeper. If u want him cheaper bench him for a week he will score two hundred more points in the remaining 35 games

check bookies odds for clean sheets. easiest way for unlikely-to-score defenders.

I seem to think RVP/Tevez debate is a very close call for captaincy.

The captain poll seems to think otherwise 😯
