It hasn’t been the best of starts for Aston Villa. Having watched his team score once in the first two Gameweeks, Paul Lambert boosted his options up front by snapping up Christian Benteke from Belgian side Genk prior to this summer’s transfer deadline. The 21-year-old, who moves to the midlands on a four-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m, is Lambert’s eighth signing since taking over the reins this summer:

Benteke continues Lambert’s recent policy of acquiring younger players from lower leagues or abroad, with a deliberate decision to mainly choose ambition over experience when restructuring his side. The Villa boss sang the praises of his new signing and revealed he expects the youngster to have a real impact up front this term:

Christian is only 21 years of age but already he’s an established Belgian international and he’s had a terrific time at Genk. He’s something very different to what we have here and that added dimension will enhance the football club. A young lad he may be, but he’s definitely a handful. He’s tall, powerful, he has pace and we’ll be stronger with him in the side.

The Statistics

The young Belgian’s career began in his native country at Gent where, as a 17-year-old, he made seven appearances in the 2007-08 season. Benteke then moved to Standard Liege, scoring three goals and providing a couple of assists in nine games before being loaned out to KV Kortrijk midway through the campaign.

Over a couple of seasons he scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 32 appearances, but Benteke failed to settle upon returning to his parent club; Liege farmed him out to Mechelin in 2010-11 before finally selling him back to Genk before the start of last season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, Benteke delivered. Returning 10 goals and four assists from 22 appearances in his first season, he continued his storming form earlier this term, with three goals and an assist in five games before Lambert came calling.

The Prospects

Standing six foot five tall, Benteke offers the midlands outfit an extra edge up front, with a raw, physical presence that is sure to unsettle many a Premier League centre-half. He could be just the ally Darren Bent needs to spark his lacklustre season into life – with Lambert utilising Benteke in a similar way to Grant Holt for Norwich last season, Bent will be looking to feed off knock-downs and grab the goals to fire Villa up the table.

Certainly, Lambert’s selection policy so far bodes well for Benteke. Summer signings such as Matt Lowton, Ron Vlaar and Karim El Ahmadi have all started every match and with Nathan Delfouneso loaned out to Blackpool for the season, options up front are minimal – Benteke could well be ahead of Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor in the pecking order as Bent’s partner, with plenty of starts looking likely if Lambert continues with a 4-4-2. Service from the flanks will be vital – the likes of Barry Bannan, Brett Holman or Charles N’Zogbia will be tasked with delivering plenty crosses for the new boy to feed upon; Benteke’s aerial ability could perhaps boost their assist potential.

Priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Benteke’s mid-price appeal is unlikely to pick up many suitors just yet. With a point, two goals and no clean sheets from their first three, it’s understandable that faith in Villa’s Fantasy assets is currently faltering. The next six Gameweeks, however, sees the midlands outfit welcome (SWA, WBA, NOR) to Villa Park and with a trip to Southampton also on their short-term agenda, Lambert’s side are afforded a strong opportunity to quickly turn their season around.

Thoughts on my transfer plans for the next 4 GWs (assuming I get no pressing of course)

    GW5 - Torres ➡ Lambert

GW6 Rafael ➡ Clark (can't think of many better for less than 5 who aren't Cuellar or Hughes)

    GW7 Noble :arrow; Cazorla

    GW8 Marveaux ➡ Maloney

Picking Noble over Maloney was my biggest GW1 mistake.

atm yes, to free up funds, I could be persuaded to hold off a week, save the transfer and do both GW6 or swap around and ditch Rafa after Wigan as my main priority

I would definitely hold off for the week and use a double transfer the week after.

You will have greater flexibility in GW 6 then if there are any unforeseen circumstances/injuries that might scupper your plans.

These will all change, I guarantee it, Torres will score and put your head in a spin, I'd get Marveaux out for Maloney ASAP, at least Maloney is someone who will get you points. This looks like you're mainly trying to accommodate Cazorla, which ain't a bad idea.

Yeah I may hold Torres anyway, and either save the transfer or dump Rafa. I only have 0.1 atm so can't get Maloney in right now.

I did say it was plans under the proviso of no injuries etc.

Having already done Collocini>Cuellar this week to avoid a price drop and save 0.5m to get Cazorla next week if Kagawa failed against Wigan, I checked transfers in for the week and had a feeling he'd be rising... With the Kagawa and RVP doubts I didn't want the risk of two bench players on the pitch this week so pulled the trigger for a 4 pointer. And you know by now Cazorla went up 0.1m, so it cost me 4 points but wouldn't have been possible next week. Just need Kagawa not to start now. Fancy Santi to run the show for a big score against Soton... 🙂

its difficult to say without, at least, rudimentary details, some sort of base-line. The physio would have taken a look at half-time, checked his active and passive range of movement and looked at his gait. They were only 2-1 up at the time, so i would have thought they would want him to stay on...on the other hand, with his injury history and Huntalaar, the supposed first choice! it could be a precautionary withdrawl.

If the reports are correct and its an impact lesion from an opponents knee, there should be only minimal compressive damage, no fibre tears, the sort you can sometimes 'run-off' in a match and, if so, he will definitely be fit for the weekend...I own him and I'm not worried at the moment...I will keep you up to date if i hear anything further...

he's been missing like that for over 18 months now, no reason to think he'll stop.

9.4 is very steep for him IMO. There are other players for around that price (Cazorla, Bale, Valencia, maybe even Nani) who will score higher.

I don't think anyone will consider any Liverpool player (Sterling excepted) until the fixtures ease up and hopefully the prices drop down a bit. If Gerrard doesn't do much for the next couple of weeks then his price should plummet.

Berbilly is right, Gerrard can create all he wants, but Suarez is the main goalscorer/post-hitter.

When Pool's fixtures ease up he could be considered ahead of Cazorla, and there is pens to factor in. But I'm not sure he's the points machine he once was.

    Is HBA/Yaya/Hazard(9.5)/Michu (6.5);
    Tevez(9.0)/Torres/RVP too top heavy?

I don't want to end up with the same defence as everybody else but can't bring myself to dispense of any from that front 7 so I end up with Demel/Cuellar/Jenkinson etc 🙁

Is it worth say downgrading HBA to Maloney and creating a differential defence?

I really don't think Yaya is essential - Cazorla much better option and then you cover Arsenal instead of doubling on City...

    Keeps:

In a format where you only have one keeper and you have to hold them long-term: does Vorm, Jaaskelainen, Foster or Schwarzer offer more potential than Krul over the rest of the season?

Cazorla is the stand out midfielder for this GW but maybe not for the 2 weeks after.

He's done just as well as the much more popular Zabaleta 🙂

apparently foster/bego but i personally dont rate stoke at all so im going with foster/jaask..

i dont really rate WHU that much either but i can see jaask getting a lot of save points.

Jaaskelinen / Green - Soon to become Jaaskelinen / Begovic in a week or two

Not the best unfortunately. But I've made my bed and now must lie in it

Blimey - Huth averaged 1.5 in penalty area goal attempts per home game last season and more than 1 a game overall. That's at lease one solid scoring opportunity in every game you play him.

The vast majority of these obviously came from set plays. Throw in Adam's delivery and you've got a good chance of another 6 goal season from ze big German.

Huth is player i will be looking to aquire at some point, he's a huge threat. But Stoke don't seem to have a nice run of fixtures that make him worth the investment.

Yup, I'll be looking at him when their fixtures ease up, provided I've got the extra £1m - otherwise it's Wilson for me who looks a decent prospect too.

Yep, agreed on Wilson. If I didn't have Begovic already I'd have him in.

Yep he's a good option. Wiki says he's 6'3", but I swear he's at least 8ft tall and weighs 3 tonnes.
