Martin Jol added plenty of experience to his Fulham first-team squad on Tuesday afternoon by snapping up Giorgos Karagounis until the end of the season. Having recently lost the services of Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, Jol’s move for the 35-year-old free agent will re-inject some creativity into the Cottagers’ midfield for the campaign ahead:

The Fulham boss was clearly delighted to bring the Greek captain to London after seeing both Dempsey and Dembele depart in a dramatic transfer deadline day. Karagounis joins the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric in arriving at the club this summer as Jol goes about the task of restructuring his side:

Giorgos Karagounis has a wealth of club and international experience and I’m happy that he’s joined us for this season. He’s been an influential player for his club sides and is a renowned player in world football as he’s about to become the most-capped player for Greece. He brings many certain qualities to our squad.

The Statistics

Karagounis’ career began in the Panathinaikos youth set-up before he was packed off to Apollon Smyrni as an 18-year-old. Over a couple of seasons, he produced nine goals from 55 appearances before returning to his former club in time for the 1998-99 campaign. Over the next five years, the midfielder became a key member of the side, finding the net 25 times in 118 league games. Karagounis also produced several crucial performances in the Champions League and subsequently caught the eye of Inter Milan- as a result, he moved to Italy in 2003 but his time in Serie A was a major disappointment.

During the course of two seasons the midfielder featured just 31 times and, with 17 of those appearances as a substitute, he failed to produce any attacking returns. The playmaker moved on to Benfica for the next two years, finding the net three times in 45 league matches before he once again found his way back to Panathinaikos. Karagounis remained in his native country for the next five seasons, grabbing 12 goals and 20 assists from 127 league games before the club released him on a free transfer this summer. A wealth of international experience has seen Karagounis turn out 120 times for the Greek national side, finding the net on nine occasions.

The Prospects

Much may depend on how Jol rearranges his system in light of the recent departures. After the closure of the transfer window, the Fulham boss admitted he would look to find the “right balance” after Dembele’s departure left a gaping hole in his first XI. Jol fielded Steve Sidwell alongside Mahamadou Diarra in central midfield in a 4-4-2 formation at West Ham but the 3-0 Upton Park defeat certainly gave him plenty to ponder.

Quite whether Karagounis is ready for immediate action is another matter entirely, though; the player’s last competitive match was at Euro 2012 and he admitted he is still building up his match fitness at the moment, suggesting he could be slowly eased into the first-team fold.

As the season unfolds, though, Sidwell looks the likeliest candidate to make way, with Diarra’s combative nature complementing Karagounis’ ability to dictate play in the middle of the park. Likely to be handed set-piece duties for the Cottagers, his delivery could be a key aspect in how we assess his Fantasy potential, with a price of around 5.0 – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the likeliest scenario. The club’s strong home form under Jol is certainly cause for optimism; 36 of their 48 goals last term were scored at the Cottage and with five under their belt in the season opener with Norwich already, the potential for Fantasy returns is obvious.

With (WBA, wig, sot, AVL, rdg) amongst their next six fixtures, the upcoming schedule certainly looks kind for Jol’s side. If Karagounis can quickly settle and establish a regular role under Jol, his eye for a killer pass and superb free-kick delivery could well earn him a place on Fantasy managers’ Watchlists over the next few Gameweeks.

I think he's a good player, but is overhyped. I hope he becomes a great player at Arsenal but too many think he has reached that level already.

Petit, Vieira, Edu and (a fit) Diaby are beasts in comparison and he doesn't come across as skillful as a Fabregas, Nasri or more recently Cazorla.

I'm not sure what his role is - maybe cover for either Arteta or Diaby.

Jack will play in Cazorla's current position. Cazorla will play wide right. The first choice starting 11 should be

      Szczesny
      Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Gibbs
      Diaby Wilshere Arteta
      Cazorla Giroud Podolski

Cazorla will cut inside a lot (as was his custom at Malaga). He's too skilful a player to hug the touchline and whip crosses in.

I think he will be the same player. Class is permanent.

RVP was injured for a long time, Fabregas with his hamstring injuries... Evev Valencia came back from injury and is nailed on in RM. Injuries sometimes dont stop a player playing sell.
Look at Diaby these days. I thought he was not good.

Diaby's always been a class player but let's not get too excited here he's played 3 games and is now injured (albeit a minor one).

Wilshere could come back and be fine but he could well not be.

Granted Ramsey hasn't been the same player since his big injury. That could be psychological though. That tackle by WWE Superstar Ryan Shawcross would give anyone PTSD. Add to that Gary Speed's suicide. The boy's had quite a rough ride lately. Anyhow, Arsenal's embarrassment of riches in midfield gives the lad time to get his head right and his game back.

I don't know whether Ramsey was going to be really good or not, but assessing him today he is frequently poor and I think will play less and less over the next two seasons before being sold on - Another in the overhyped category.

I have them both. Podolski will probably give you more goals, but Cazorla will give you more assists, and his goals give you more points. Both world class players though. If Wenger had payed the Andy Carroll price for them, people would already realise that they're better than Hazard and Kagawa.

Never understood this argument. If you are happy with all the players you have and don't feel like you are sacrificing in any spot to get those players (or wouldn't rather leave some money in the bank,) how is that worse than having a player you never really want to play?

Thought about it because there's at least one CS and some profit in it. But I really don't want to plan to waste a transfer on a defender a few weeks down the line. Save your FTs for the unpredictable things is my new motto.

DDG hasn't exactly cemented his spot, and for that much, you might as well have a keeper that will play every week without fail. Howard or Vorm would be better imo if you are looking at a 5.5+ keeper.

I have had one of my 'genius' ideas. I'm looking like being 0.1m short of my WC dream-team (unless Winston Reid suddenly goes on a marketing offensive and rises again).

Gorkss is 3.9m but is a rotation risk with Mariappa, who is also 3.9m. One of them will play EVERY week. Do you see? ...

You need to be led away. If it was a stronger overall defensive team (I suppose this has yet to be proven to an extent) sure, but I think that is an awfully poor defensive rotation that doesn't allow for swapping for fixtures.

    RE: the Mata debate,

I can't see him playing second fiddle to Hazard all season in terms of attacking points. There's no way Mata won't get a decent amount of assists and a few goals again this year. He's an attacking midfielder. His stats so far don't look good but his points/game ratio last year was excellent and he got 6 goals and 13 assists. I'm not saying he will be as good as Hazard, and I can see Hazard scoring more goals but I still see Mata doing well. The key thing to factor in is that he might be too expensive to go for and too risky if Hazard looks the more reliable man. I just find it hard to see Mata always being told to hang back all season because he can be so effective playing a more attacking role.

Mata tracks back more than Hazard. So when Chelsea do win the ball back, Hazard is ahead and ready to recieve the ball and score/pass to torres/win a penalty.
When Chelsea have posession however, then both are on even grounds.
But Hazard took a penalty too so thats that.
