Martin Jol added plenty of experience to his Fulham first-team squad on Tuesday afternoon by snapping up Giorgos Karagounis until the end of the season. Having recently lost the services of Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, Jol’s move for the 35-year-old free agent will re-inject some creativity into the Cottagers’ midfield for the campaign ahead:

The Fulham boss was clearly delighted to bring the Greek captain to London after seeing both Dempsey and Dembele depart in a dramatic transfer deadline day. Karagounis joins the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric in arriving at the club this summer as Jol goes about the task of restructuring his side:

Giorgos Karagounis has a wealth of club and international experience and I’m happy that he’s joined us for this season. He’s been an influential player for his club sides and is a renowned player in world football as he’s about to become the most-capped player for Greece. He brings many certain qualities to our squad.

The Statistics

Karagounis’ career began in the Panathinaikos youth set-up before he was packed off to Apollon Smyrni as an 18-year-old. Over a couple of seasons, he produced nine goals from 55 appearances before returning to his former club in time for the 1998-99 campaign. Over the next five years, the midfielder became a key member of the side, finding the net 25 times in 118 league games. Karagounis also produced several crucial performances in the Champions League and subsequently caught the eye of Inter Milan- as a result, he moved to Italy in 2003 but his time in Serie A was a major disappointment.

During the course of two seasons the midfielder featured just 31 times and, with 17 of those appearances as a substitute, he failed to produce any attacking returns. The playmaker moved on to Benfica for the next two years, finding the net three times in 45 league matches before he once again found his way back to Panathinaikos. Karagounis remained in his native country for the next five seasons, grabbing 12 goals and 20 assists from 127 league games before the club released him on a free transfer this summer. A wealth of international experience has seen Karagounis turn out 120 times for the Greek national side, finding the net on nine occasions.

The Prospects

Much may depend on how Jol rearranges his system in light of the recent departures. After the closure of the transfer window, the Fulham boss admitted he would look to find the “right balance” after Dembele’s departure left a gaping hole in his first XI. Jol fielded Steve Sidwell alongside Mahamadou Diarra in central midfield in a 4-4-2 formation at West Ham but the 3-0 Upton Park defeat certainly gave him plenty to ponder.

Quite whether Karagounis is ready for immediate action is another matter entirely, though; the player’s last competitive match was at Euro 2012 and he admitted he is still building up his match fitness at the moment, suggesting he could be slowly eased into the first-team fold.

As the season unfolds, though, Sidwell looks the likeliest candidate to make way, with Diarra’s combative nature complementing Karagounis’ ability to dictate play in the middle of the park. Likely to be handed set-piece duties for the Cottagers, his delivery could be a key aspect in how we assess his Fantasy potential, with a price of around 5.0 – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the likeliest scenario. The club’s strong home form under Jol is certainly cause for optimism; 36 of their 48 goals last term were scored at the Cottage and with five under their belt in the season opener with Norwich already, the potential for Fantasy returns is obvious.

With (WBA, wig, sot, AVL, rdg) amongst their next six fixtures, the upcoming schedule certainly looks kind for Jol’s side. If Karagounis can quickly settle and establish a regular role under Jol, his eye for a killer pass and superb free-kick delivery could well earn him a place on Fantasy managers’ Watchlists over the next few Gameweeks.

I think in 2-3 weeks he'll get his place back as Verminator needs defence cover when he gets forward. Koscielny was helping him quite a bit last season. Mertesacker is so slow in this regard.

His final 3rd stats are very impressive. Against a leaky Man U defence he's in my side this week.

Also crossed the ball same times as Baines so far, so he's putting it in the right places for points. Matter of time IMO.

Hmmm, personally I wouldn't be keen on keeping Jenks in my team, maybe for this one game at Southampton but not the next two. I can see why you won't want to play Lambert this wk-end but he could be worth keeping. Fletcher or Berbatov for this GW would be better options than Lambert but it depends on how you feel about it, If you're on WC then I'd say go for the gamble this week instead of benching a striker.

I hear you. Bought Jenks purely for the price rise initially, so may stick to my plan and get rid as avoids a FT later. I like Fletcher/Berbs longer term over Lambert too, so kinda falls into place.

If you look at their FF histories, McLean. In roughly half a season after O'Neil came in, 101 FF points. Pienaar has never been, historically, a top FF point getter. I like Morrison a lot, but it depends on whether he can avoid injury/rotation. He's nailed on near term. Snodgrass is a bit of an unknown in terms of FF, but he looked the best player on the itch v. TOT.

I agree, I suppose what I'm getting at is a lot of the focus has been on whether RVP, if fit will be rested or play limited game time. but Man City, and Arsenal have away fixtures, a day earlier, far less recovery time for players, so rotation become's even more likely.

      (b) really gives you options for the armband and probably provides more consistent scores. With (a), Guthrie probably sits every week. RvP is a monster and, while I have him, that's a lot of money tied up in 1 guy who will probably play no more than 27/28 EPL games given the fixture glut as the season goes along.

      I'd vote (b).

You're better off taking Doosra's opinion. But I think Matty Taylor and Jarvis are fighting for the same spot. Jarvis started against Swansea and wasn't fit for the previous match. So, I reckon Jarvis is first choice if fit.

I don't understand the Noble thing, even at 5.0(4.9). He has never scored even 90 FF points in a season and that includes 3 seasons with ~2200 min played.

He's competing with Jarvis for LW position, so a big rotation risk, won't play much as Bog Sam loves Jarvis. Occasionally played LB last season, but doubt he will in Prem League.

Played left back last time out. Highly unlikely he'll be playing every match. It will be himself and McCartney vying for left back with Taylor occasionally being pushed further forward.

Last season they often played David Bentley at LB who's gone now but I imagine McCartney will be first choice.

In response to the input above I have decided to play Boyce, but instead of Demel rather than Taylor. That gives me three attacking defs in Baines, Boyce and Taylor. Just have to keep fingers crossed that W Ham concede away to Norwich. I think they will.

According to the FFS Projections, having RvP and Guthrie in my team should result in 229 points. Jelavic and Santi are supposed to end up around with a total of 261 (me having subtracted already scored points). Hence, the latest player combo ought to be the best. However, this is without the captaincy points RvP probably will generate plenty of. What do you think?

Over the longer term I think it's worth it. Kags and Nasri are rotational 60 minute men, which will drive you nuts.

Also Caz and Barfa just about play as forwards, so are points monsters.

So Kagawa looks very doubtful for Wigan.

Anyone know if RVP trained today??

And also.. what a prospect Jelavic is this weekend. Krul, Simpson, Raylor and Coloccini all missing, Perch doubtful. I'm guessing that leaves them with:
Harper, Santon, Saylor, Williamson and... Gutierrez? Looks terrible.

      Anita Saylor Williamson/Perch Santon.

Not too bad, Anita did well last week, as good if not better than Simpson is.

Colo's a major blow but Williamson/Perch are solid.

      Krul's the big loss.
