Our Friday evening regular makes a welcome return after another fortnight’s interruption due to international fixtures. Last time round, Juan Mata produced the goods, following on from Peter Crouch the previous week – let’s hope our trio of overlooked contenders can live up to our expectations again:

Adel Taarabt

While his consistency and application have been (quite rightly) called into question, there’s no denying the Moroccan is capable of brilliance on his day. Granted, an off-form Taarabt can be no more than a liability but if QPR are to climb the table and claw their way out the relegation zone, his contribution could well be key.

Dropped after the 5-0 opening day hammering at the hands of Swansea, he failed to feature again until Gameweek 6, a victim of Mark Hughes’ continual first-team tinkering. Climbing off the bench at West Ham, Taarabt gave the R’s a brief glimpse of hope with an outstanding finish before fellow-sub Samba Diakite’s dismissal swung the game back in the hosts’ favour. Handed a start in the following game, he again produced, grabbing another eye-catching goal in the narrow 3-2 defeat at the Hawthorns.

This weekend Taarabt squares up to an Everton defence with just one clean sheet in their last six matches – as Hughes looks to arrest a run of games that has produced just two points all season, his reliance on the Moroccan to fire his side to victory at Loftus Road could hardly be greater. Priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports game, and with an ownership of 1% in both games, Taarabt looks an intriguing proposition heading into this weekend’s round of matches.

Olivier Giroud

Having rolled out a Watchlist article earlier in the international break, our faith in Arsenal’s summer signing from Montpellier shows little sign of wavering. Handed a first start since the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool last time round, Giroud vindicated Arsene Wenger’s decision by grabbing a goal, assist and the maximum FPL bonus points in the Gunners’ 3-1 comeback win at Upton Park. Factor in a last-gasp equaliser in France’s midweek draw in Spain and it seems he’s finally hitting the form that produced 21 goals in Ligue 1 in the previous campaign.

Earlier today, Wenger praised his compatriot’s recent performances, going on to say:

“There are two things when you are a striker. First, I’m always worried when a striker doesn’t have chances. In his case, he always had chances in every single game and couldn’t convert them into goals. The conversion rate goes in cycles. Once a player starts to score, suddenly he takes off for a while and suddenly it stops again [and] nobody has really found out why. I hope he’s at the start of a good cycle.”

Certainly, the omens look good. The north London outfit travel to Carrow Road tomorrow to face a Norwich side that has shipped nine goals in their last two matches before playing host to QPR the following weekend. Priced at 8.4 in FPL and 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 1% in both games Giroud looks a real differential contender over the next couple of Gameweeks and an ideal acquisition for those Fantasy managers looking for something different for their three-man forward lines.

Leon Osman

Today’s confirmation that Marouane Fellaini will miss the trip to Loftus Road has played a part in our final selection. Osman’s recent central midfield role has somewhat curtailed his attacking endeavours – so far, he’s found the next just once, with Fellaini and Steven Pienaar hogging the midfield limelight around Goodison way instead.

The Belgian’s absence at Loftus Road, however, could prove the spark Osman needs to fire his Fantasy season back into life. With the role in “the hole” behind Nikica Jelavic now up for grabs, Osman may well be the one to move forward and provide the Croatian with support. Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, he is owned by less than 1% of Fantasy managers in both games; there’s no doubt he’s a major punt but, bearing in mind QPR have conceded 16 goals already, Osman could pay off for those who fancy a real gamble.

2 weeks away from training - so probably 3 league games but he's had trouble with the rehabilitation so who knows could be longer. At 4.5m he's not a terrible shout if you have a backup GK. Could always get rid of him in the Jan wildcard and play your other goalkeeper through Nov/Dec in worst case scenario...

    Ivanovic, Baines, Wilso

    Sterling, Gervinho, Cazorla (c), Bale

    Ba, Torres, Jelavic (v)

    Subs: Foster: Gorkss, Ramirez, Demel

i dont know to be honest haha, just can see stoke standing a better chance of keeping a clean sheet rather than west brom against city.

ive actually took a 4 point hit, got rid of gibbs and RVP and put ivanovic and torres in, wild i know, but after much debate with myself i justified not having RVP, he's just too expensive and it impacted the rest of my squad, torres lies at the top of all that chelsea talent behind him, im taking the risk, plus i like him, will see how gervinho does over this game as he has a nice fixture after this too, otherwise im booting him out the team.

i see. its just that foster is home while bego plays away.

hmmm.... donn't blame you for getting rod of rvp and gibbs but honestly getting in ivanovic and torres was a poor choice imo. they have a rough run of games now! their good points returns were because they started off the season with very easy fixtures.

thats true about chelsea, but i aint underestimating them, all the confidence generated from those starting fixtures will pour into the next big ones, they'll do well i reckon, just my opinion though.

im glad you agree about RVP, for me i can easy use the money elsewhere, he isn't essential imo.

could play foster, coz ive got wilson in defence anyway i guess, shall havea re-shuffle, who would you bring in for Ramirez with 2.3 in the bank? leaves me with 8.3 or there abouts.

well that's a matter of opinion. i don't think they'll do too well. but if you back them to do well then good moves on your part

yupp. completely agree! if you see my squad it allows me to have several more big hitters and lots of players i like and can then rotate based on fixtures

yeahh that's what i'd do tbh. for 8.3 or so i'd bring in either hba or pienaar

Repost from the VERY bottom of last page: Dont you hate it when that happens?

Good morning everyone. How are we all feeling? So glad the international break is over and no injuries! Do you think this is the right team lineup?

    Jaaskelainen

    Baines, Ivanovich, Rangel

    Bale, Hazard, Michu, Cazorla (VC)

    Ba, Fletcher, Berbatov(C)

    Subs: Ruddy, Pienaar, Jenkinson, Nelsen

I'm sure there is some of it, and I reckon recreational drug use is higher than you'd think, I'm not sure performance enhancing drugs are that prevalent. Most footballers physiques are achievable by your guy in the gym - it's the skill that elevates them. In cycling or baseball it's much more about the muscles you possess.

      That's my naive view anyway.

the armstrong/american postal doping was very much a part of the time and the culture in cycling in that era. think most footballers are clean the odd one gets silly with alittle bit of weed or charlie but performancing enhancing stuff is probably quite rare, the clubs if anytrhing would know about it with all the monitoring of premiership players that now goes on

i'm not talking recreational drugs here at all. i really don't care if a guy is doing this. not like it's going to help his game. my point is only about performance enhancing drugs. i just think that a lot of high level sports stars have a win at all costs attitude and if drugs can give you an advantage, even in football, some will take it.

I suspect that whatever doping is involved aids endurance - running 7-8 miles a match, a lot of it at pace, requires incredible fitness. But I would guess doping is minimal in soccer. I suspect American football, and other sports where physical strength is a massive asset, doping is rampant.

People will dope whenever it gives an advantage. In football it doesn't give enough of an advantage to make the reward outweigh the risk.

Blow up your upper body with steroids? Great, you are really strong, but all the muscle is just using up your aerobic capacity. Use EPO? Yeah, you are running 10km, not cycling 300km, and you better hope the drug tester doesn't call. Skill based sports are the most immune to doping for this reason, and Olympic sports probably the worst.

Some of the NFL guys, whose job is basically - run 2 seconds, be really strong, push guy hard, rest, repeat - are almost certainly heavily on the juice. But their job is specialised enough to make it worthwhile.

If you've got RvP (I do), he's got to have the armband. If you are not going to give it to a 13+ forward at home v. a team MUN beat 3-0 last year and who are typically poor on the road . . . um, when ?

I think your defence is fine for the moment as all cheapies rotate nicely and give you good cover, though downgrading one and upgrading another could be wise as it would allow you to switch to whoever, Sagna/Evans/Raf/Mert etc, is the flavour of the month.
