Our Friday night regular returns with a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. We’ve turned to a pair of London-based protagonists with strong upcoming schedules on the horizon and scoured the bargain basement for a cut-price defensive option at the DW…

Shaun Wright-Phillips

No more than a mere bench-warmer in Mark Hughes’ last few matches in charge at QPR, the winger has made his way into the starting lineup under Harry Redknapp. With Jamie Mackie moved to the lone frontman role in favour of the ineffectual Djibril Cisse, Wright-Phillips has been handed a berth on the right of the R’s midfield as the new man in charge looks to engineer a climb out the drop zone.

While the likes of Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett have been peripheral in Redknapp’s thoughts, Wright-Phillips seems to have his manager’s faith and justified his inclusion by producing an assist in last week’s 2-2 draw at Wigan. It sums up QPR’s season under Hughes that this was the winger’s first attacking returns of the campaign but with three home games in the next four (FUL, new, WBA, LIV) he’s afforded a chance to build on last weekend’s output.

Priced at 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game, it’s no surprise that Wright-Phillips has an ownership of around the 1% mark in both games but, if Redknapp is to work his magic, he could be an integral figure in his side’s battle against relegation.

Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian’s start to life at the Lane has been a distinctly underwhelming one. Vertonghen arrived in the Premier League with a goal-getting pedigree – 14 strikes in his last two seasons at Ajax is indicative of his attacking sensibilities but so far, he’s found the net just once, with a single assist also accrued.

Two clean sheets in 16 games sums up Tottenham’s lack of resilience at the back but with Benoit Assou-Ekotto soon to return from a knee injury, Andre Villas-Boas’ side could be set for an upturn in defensive returns. With a superb run of fixtures to follow (SWA, STOK, avl, sun, REA, qpr) Vertonghen looks a decent differential shout not just for this weekend but all the way up to the winter wildcard in Gameweek 22.

Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game, he’s far from cheap but as his Eredivisie stats suggest, Vertonghen has the class to prosper as Villas-Boas looks to take advantage of the festive schedule and boost his side’s chances of a top three finish.

Ronnie Stam

A raft of injuries and suspensions at the back for Wigan has afforded the Dutchman a run of starts in recent weeks. With the treatment room at the DW still seemingly packed to the rafters, Stam looks set to continue on the right of Roberto Martinez’s midfield four, with Emmerson Boyce dropping into the back-three to cover for the likes of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis.

Over his four consecutive starts, Stam hasn’t exactly propelled himself onto Fantasy radars. No goals, assists or clean sheets hardly offer too much hope but his out of position berth and rock-bottom FPL price of 3.8 may appeal to those Fantasy managers looking for a cheap defender who would free up budget further up the pitch. Priced at 4.0 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of under 3% in FPL, there are few, if indeed any, players who come cheaper with the guarantee of a start this weekend as the Latics look to put the brakes on Norwich’s recent unbeaten run.

What exactly can't you believe? It's not like the first time it has happened.

I'm sorry, this isn't the time or place. Truly no offence intended, but let's keep this forum on the subject of football and fantasy football.

So if something extraordinary happens we shouldn't allow it to be part of the conversation on here? I don't agree. This forum has loads of unrelated stuff on it... this is something everyone is shocked by so you shouldn't be telling others what to say or what not to speak about when it's clearly an emotional reaction to a catastrophic event.

I agree. If we were all at a football match or in the pub chatting about football and a major event occurred we wouldn't ignore it and say football chat only.

No, that's not really what I was saying. A chat in the pub is between a few mates. A chat online can be viewed by thousands of people and incense and escalate trouble. Or the opposite can happen and a genuine feeling of sympathy can become watered down and trivialised.

I'm more for encouraging meaningful action. If you're affected by today's event then lobby the American government. Do something of substance. Don't say, "oh how sad" and let it be forgotten in a couple of days.

You seem to be making a bigger issue out of this than necessary. There are alot of posters on here and there are non related posts from time to time without it causing a problem. You could easily move onto the next post but instead attempted to control what someone else posted. He is entitled to his views on the issue as are you which you felt obliged to share because the 'forum' is a place where you can do that.

Short of forcing the American government to ban people from carrying guns (something which isn't going to happen as the right to keep and bear arms is written into their constitution) , what good does all the media coverage and forum spouting do exactly? The media love it, and it's just wrong, so wrong.

It's an awful and shocking act. An utter tragedy. But posting a link and an unhappy face serves what purpose?

If you are American it doesn't mean you agree with or accept everything that happens in America. You can live in a society and be appalled by the actions of others. To say you should just be desensitized because it continues to happen is admitting defeat. I get what you are trying to say but who wouldn't continue to be shocked by mindlessly brutal massacres? No matter how many times it happens it's still shocking and sad.

defense a bit suspect this weekend so time to finally drop gorkss but for who. got 1 ft and 3.2 in bank. i've narrowed it down to:

    a) rafael - kind of obvious pick especially since i am a united fan)
    b) sagna - good differential but is he nailed on
    c) vertonghan - bae coming back worries me about his lb position going forward and will he be rotated with gallas and caulker in center
    d) mcauley - can west brom start getting clean sheets again?
    e) any other ideas?

    team linked
    thanks

      Rafael.
Im a united fan too and i've had him since gw1.
Although there conceding far too many rafa's attacking potential is well worth it. Plus with a few nice fixtures coming up we might keep the odd cleanie aswell

yah i wish i got him back at the start but i really didn't think he would do so well and i never had the funds to get him in after his price rose so fast early on. united have to start getting cleanies at some point but is it rafael's fault they have been conceding so much because he is always up the pitch? i kept thinking if it continued saf would become more defensive minded but it really hasnt been the case because they keep scoring more than there opponents and getting the wins.

Right, I feel terrible after a Xmas party last night and my laptop has been completely fecked by a virus. With this in mind, can some of you kindly give your thoughts on my turd of a team this time?

Saving a FT so think I’m stuck with this:

    Bunn
    Baines, Rafael, Nasty
    Dempsey, Fellaini, Michu, Sterling(benched?)
    RVP(c), Defoe, Berbatov

    Begovic, AJ(injured?), Shorey, injured

    1.9 in bank

Tempted to captain Dempsey but I’ll leave it on RVP.

I fail to see why Cazorla is any different than just about every other footballer - if someone steps on their shadow they'll fall over and writhe in pain looking for a free kick. Should they become saints once they are inside the penalty box?

would you keep fletcher just because he has southampton away, or get in defoe instead for a free transfer, but i would then have 2 ft next gw

Sagna has been voted into two teams of the season by the press association. It's no surprise Arsenal have struggled when he's not been in the team (anyone got any stats on this?).
