Liverpool have refused a written transfer request from Fernando Torres as the Spanish striker seeks to force the club’s hand following the rejected transfer bid from Chelsea.

After several sources reported the formal request form the Spanish striker on Friday night, Liverpool moved quickly and issued a statement offering confirmation…

“Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool.Fernando is under a long-term contract and the Club expects him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”

This follows an official bid from Chelsea that was revealed just 24-hours earlier; an approach that was swiftly rejected by Liverpool. Torres however, appears to have other ideas and reports on Friday suggested that the striker was “open†to the move and has urged the club to consider the offer. On Friday night those stories escalated further and Torres and his advisors have clearly decided to take more formal action to push for an Anfield exit.

The Daily Telegraph have suggested that Chelsea are ready to act on this latest development and are willing to up their offer by throwing in Daniel Sturridge as a makeweight, along with £30 million in transfer funds.

As suggested yesterday, Liverpool would seem unlikely to sell their star asset in the January window, although today’s news that a fee with Ajax for the signature of Luis Suarez has been agreed, proved an inevitable catalyst for further speculation. A Torres transfer request does considerably change the complexion of the situation and, with Chelsea poised, there now seems a possibility that the January transfer window will see a move between two British top flight clubs that would genuinely shake up the entire Premier League.

Fantasy Managers can only sit back and watch this one unfold further. Having already weathered storms served up by disgruntled versions of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez this season, it will be interesting to see if this situation settles with a similar outcome. However, with Chelsea ready to offer funds and Liverpool already in possession of a new striker, something could actually materialise from this latest “sensational transfer saga”.

In the short-term, Torres is of course due to figure in Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Stoke at Anfield; right now, his involvement in that game looks unlikely as his future at Liverpool spirals into doubt.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Offering Sturridge? I would demand an extra £10m to take on that carthorse.

      Why?

World class player is wanted by world class side. World class player decides he no longer wants to waste his talent at decidedly average club.

      Makes sense to me.

World class has lost all it's value as a term of superiority. Ever since they used it about Gerrard and Beckham 😉

True actually, surely it has to be restricted to a 'world class season'. Roy Keane was not world class at Celtic, Michael Owen was very briefly world class and quickly became luggage class, etc etc.

There was a little bit of irony about the two players mentioned. 🙂
But I do think the term world class has been debased like the English coinage of the Tudor period.

Because I mention Asamoah Gyan every time anything Ballon D'Or related comes up.

And it was a pretty obvious counter. The term "world class" itself is subjective, and is overused everywhere these days, not just football. I remember someone on X Factor calling Cher Lloyd world class once.

😀 I nearly said it too.

And speaking of using the same 'stat' in different arguments, Gyan being a Ballon D'Or nominee is usually the first point you make when arguing about the inability of Danny Welbeck. 😉

You can read into it whatever way you want. Utd are 1st in the league due to Sir Lord Emperor of Ferguson. Not because he had £300000000 to spend. The Glazers have taken advantage of the fact Utd is such a well run club. I still hate the swines.

But, [no doubt the next bit might raise your hackles so brace], your team is a fading force. Your squad as a whole is the poorest Manchester United side I have ever seen, you're just lucky that you only need to be better than the rest, and the rest are pretty crap.
If you don't seriously invest at the end of this season you could find yourself lagging behind some of the nouveau riche clubs

Yes you really are, honestly this is relative to other Manchester United squads, very poor. Scholes and Giggs won't be around much longer and VDS is on his way at the end of the season.
Take an objective look at this squad and compare it to the rest since the premiership started.

Worst Manchester United squad since the inception of the Premier League Granville? I'd find it hard to think of a worse one. Yes there are fantastic players but the squad depth is tiny, and there are a good few journeymen in there.

I don't think you're particularly reading what I have written - I said from the outset that you are lucky that the standard across the board has fallen - you are still the best team in the Premier League. In 2005 the squad wasn't great but correct me if I'm wrong here, Fergie spent money to rectify it. Decent amounts of it.
My point (if you care to read back) is that I worry that the Glazers will not fund you to the same extent.

Possibly they will, and football will be absolutely f**ked. Horrible state of affairs if that happens.

Attila, the crisis club comes from the fact people are itching, no, dying for utd to fall from their pedestal. It's only natural i guess, but doesn't make it any less enjoyable reading the annual predictions that we'll finish 4th, or 5th.

😆 True enough, very touchy indeed. The thought that I'm suggesting past Manchester United sides are much stronger than this Manchester United sides, I thought it would have been a given to be honest.
I quite openly admit that I have seen plenty of Newcastle sides better than the current one. Good job I didn't compare Man Utd badly to another team 😉

Yeah AP but I'm not ABU, out of the teams I think can actually have a chance of winning the league United would be my second choice behind Spurs.
However I WOULD turn ABU if they got taken over a la Man City, used to always like them before all the nonsense started.

Two brilliant strikers can work soooo well. Remember Shearer and Ferdinand? 1996/97
Shearer 31 goals (cant remember his assists)
    Ferdinand 29 goal 32 assists

Awesome. Of course they did have Ginola and Beardsley feeding them.

Torres is the best finisher in the league, nobody can question his loyalty, he's asked to leave Liverpool 6 months too late imo. Also, if he joins Chelsea, just two games and he'll be facing Liverpool, now that would be juicy.

OptaJoe proved it, he's finished 22% off his chances since he joined in 2007, more than any other striker. I think he is the best in the league, him or Tevez anyway..

He's actually been extremely loyal to Liverpool, would Lampard or Fabregas want to stay at their clubs if they fell out the top four and weren't playing CL football?

Don't know about that, I was probably just making the point that Torres and Drogba wouldn't be able to play together, which I still stand by. Anyway, since then Drogba's form has completely fallen away, so it's not much a surprise that I'm much more excited about the prospect of Torres becoming a Chelsea player than I was six months ago.

I'll try to find the post from about a month ago where I said "Torres > Drogba > RVP > Berbatov > Rooney > Tévez"....

That best forward in the league line.

It would be unfair of me to not pick up on this after the way I have been slamming Rooney's form over the last 12 months.

Robin Van Persie is the best forward in the league right now, followed closely by Tevez.

                    AP, two questions:

                    1. Are you therefore suggesting RVP is a flat-track bully?

RvP is another player hyped up by the london media. Yawn fest, tell you what, if he does to Barca what Rooney did to Milan last year i'll accept he's better than a talented flat track.

Didn't they have something like 6 stone wall penalties turned down. If it was United they would have got them all, plus another 2 which weren't stone wall.

Yeah, the reffing was a joke in that game. I'm a United fan, and even I was gutted when that goal went in.

Oh yeah, and Rooney is better than RVP, just not at the moment.

I don't usually like to see Chelsea win stuff, but that game was ridiculous. There was so many obvious decisions that it didn't seem fair. Plus we would have had more chance of beating you than Barca 🙂 (if it was that season, don't shoot me if I'm wrong!)

The refereeing was terrible, for both sides, but more so for Chelsea. Chelsea didn't help themselves by parking the bus in Spain though, they could have at least tried to score.

I'd also like to know this.

Can't see how he wouldn't though... Despite me not rate him too much, he's a better footballer than the likes of James Morrison, and Wenger wouldn't have let him go unless RDM promised him plenty of minutes.

Will be interesting to see how he fits into the side though.

Morrison will most probably be dropped to the bench and Vela will probably play off Odemwingie, or the other way round maybe.. Di Matteo has also said he is going to make changes to the backline so my guess at the team for Wigan would be this..

          Myhill
          Jara Scharner Olsson Shorey
          Brunt Mulumbu Dorrans Thomas
          Vela
          Odemwingie

I still think Morrison is a better winger than Thomas but there is no way he'll be dropped. Di Matteo prefers Morrison down the middle and so does Morrison himself but nobody else thinks this, strange one.

I asked you earlier and you didn't reply!

But that's all good now as you've answered. At the moment what formation do you usually play? Will he be a lone striker or 1 of 2?

I fancy a punt on him instead of Odemwingie in GW27 if he's going to play both games.

Lone striker I'd expect but don't know whether he will be the lone striker or Odemwingie will be. One of them will play off the other, probably Vela to begin with in the less advanced position imo.

I've heard were still in for another striker though, a target man..

I've already wildcarded and have him. I can't see Odemwingie not playing up front though, he's on 8 goals so far which is a pretty decent return so why change things? He needs more support obviously which is why I think Vela should play behind him, he'll offer more support than Morrison.

He played one game on the wing against Birmingham on the wing and was completely anonymous first half, went in 1-0 down then he got moved up front second half and scored 2 goals!

Can anyone offer some advice on my current team? I have Alcaraz / Cleverley / Dann all out injured and I am desperately trying to get rid of Elmander, I want to get Berbs in for Rooney Id say and Elmander out for RVP, I only have one free transfer this week but I am stuck between getting new strike force in place or chipping out the duffers...I'm still top of my main league but even scoring 90 points last week without Berba / RVP or using my wild card I thought I did OK, not well enough though! - Appreciate any comments. I don't get this poorest United team for a while talk, can anyone remember a more solid centre back pairing that Vidic and Ferdinand lately? Rooney and Berbatov up front would be better that Sheringham and Solskjaer, Cole etc....

Nani, Fletcher, Giggs and Scholes(still playing well), Carrick, Anderson(really coming along) and Valencia tc... is areally solid midfield. The standard of football is always improving.

and alot of our players are particularly old...missing a left winger (park perhaps)...our RB is good in rafael but hes rash...our midfield is getting on (scholes/giggs) and rooney is misfiring and being played on the wing for sme reason

Vidic yes, Ferdinand is ageing and is struggling to stay fit but is still a good player when he can make it. The idea that Rooney and Berbatov are as good as the treble winning sides strike force is just silly.
Giggs and Scholes have at most another season. Anderson is ok, the rest is poor. The standard of football is always improving? On what basis? I don't think so.
Anyway I shan't say any more on it, prickly subject for ardent fans so I'll leave it now.

I know this doesn't really apply to you Attila but most of the time it just makes people feel better about the inadequacies of their own teams.
They attribute United's success to biased referees or cheating or luck or anything that avoids actually giving praise to their football.

When a player dominates their sides scoring for their team like Tevez has done this year and like Rooney last year, then they will always be in with a shout. I don't believe in this flat track bully stuff anyway, again it's a diversion tactic. The 6 games a year against the other top 3 are games that are difficult to win and often difficult to create chances in, and most times you cant lay the blame with a striker.

DJ Campbell and RVP up in price.
STILL no drop for Bale despite massive sales. I hate this price raise/fall stuff - it is such a pain in the arse.

Ah balls I'm sure he wasn't when I sold him yesterday. I panicked at the thought of losing cash with the wildcard on the very near horizon. Bah.

Are you currently playing your wildcard? It's a cup weekend, supensions and injuries are banana skins. I'm never doing an early transfer again, the 0.1m just isn't worth taking the risk for.

No I was going to wait until the week before GW27 deadline. Sort of annoyed with myself for fretting my way into making an early move. I was for some reason wholly sure that Bale was going to drop. Ach well. With Crainey being out for a few weeks and the Torres saga if things go any more tits up I'll do an early wildcard to save points hits.

I was looking at the transfers out this gameweek and that he hadn't fallen already.
I agree with MarknLard when he said the whole thing would be better if you couldnt see transfers in/out it would cut out a lot of daftness.

Good evening all, I would really appreciate your views on this WC team Im currently thinking about:

      Hart/Kingson
      Jara/Ivanovic/Coleman/Dawson/Johnson R
      Nani/Fabregas/Van der Vaart/Adam/Etherington
      Berbatov/Campbell/Van Persie

Any obvious faults/changes you guys can spot, what would you do differently:?:

Berbatov will dry up I think. Man U are about to hit a really tough run in.

Villa on the other hand have an amazing run in. Either next GW or the one after, I'm bringing in Bent and Young.

15-4 to win on PP, worth a shot imo

Atilla you'd really rate, Sheringham, Yorke, Cole and Solskjaer better than Berbatov, Rooney, Hernandez, also not forgetting Welbeck who although he is out on loan looks like a smashing prospect. Also not forgetting that they were incredibly lucky to win both their most recnet European Cup victories, with two goals in injury time in 1999, and a dismal penalty miss by Terry in 2008.
