In an outstanding debut campaign in England’s top-flight, Rickie Lambert has proven a cut-price Fantasy sensation. Although he’d racked up the goals in the lower divisions, many had initially questioned Lambert’s ability to adapt to the Premier League but he’s done so seamlessly and, as the season progresses, shows little sign of letting up.

In retrospect, the opening three Gameweeks hinted at what was to come. Lambert found the net in the Saints’ defeat at City on the opening weekend of the season and followed that up with a goal and assist in a narrow home loss to United a couple of fixtures later. A brace at home to Villa in Gameweek 6 harvested the first victory of the campaign – whether his side win or lose, he’s still managed to produce.

What’s been most impressive about Lambert is his consistency. He’s registered 141 points, which is third top on the forward standings, despite managing just three sets of double figures all season – he’ played in all of Southampton’s 27 fixtures and has scored or assisted in 13 of those matches. With 12 goals and seven assists accrued, he’s played a part in 19, or 50%, of his side’s goals and has also received 22 bonus points for his endeavours.

In spite of his scoring exploits, it’s somehow taken the arrival of new boss Mauricio Pochettino to finally convince Fantasy managers of Lambert’s worth –as recently as Gameweek 25 he was sitting at a price of 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), just 0.4 up on his initial price. The Argentine’s installation seems to have boosted Lambert further, though; he has now scored or assisted in each of his last three – his most consistent run of returns this term and, with a superb set of fixtures to follow, the bandwagon has finally arrived.

Sitting just three points from safety, the Saints are afforded four home games in the next six to boost their chances of survival. QPR, Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham all roll up to St Mary’s and with trips to Norwich and Reading also on the radar, there’s reason for optimism for Pochettino’s troops. Indeed, the Saints’ strength of schedule makes Lambert a season-keeper; with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces, his current cost of 7.0 continues to look a bargain. Bearing in mind only Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez have managed to outscore him so far for forwards, it’s no surprise to learn that Lambert is the top value player in FPL so far this term.

Another factor in his favour is Pochettino’s selection policy. Jason Puncheon had previously proven a strong fifth midfielder option but while Lambert goes from strength to strength, the winger’s minutes diminish. Puncheon dropped to the bench at Newcastle last weekend and was afforded just 10 minutes in the 4-2 defeat, while fellow midfield option Gaston Ramirez also played the role of second-half sub. With the fixture list smiling so favourably on the Saints, there seems little doubt that if they are to beat the drop, Lambert will play a pivotal part over the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

This makes me laugh, because each time someone does the old "first" routine, it points out to everyone else that they're a simpleton. No offence.

Still a small chance of the United game going ahead midweek in GW29 isn't there? I currently have 8 players for that week so will be hanging on to him until it's confirmed blank.

Thought id get involved with this RVP debate:

    Think it comes down to 2 options really;

    1) Fergie will start RVP to try and get the job done and if it is done then takes him off, risk to this – if drawing or losing, take him off anyway with real madrid in mind? prediction 60 mins

    2) Fergie starts him on the bench and only brings him on with 20/30 mins left if the game is drawing or losing and wraps him up for real madrid OR brings him on regardless of score because he wantsd a run out before midweek – prediction 25 minutes

I think personally, he will go for option 2

    what do you think?

My opinion would be RvP will start tomorrow. Hasn't played in a week. Professional footballers should be able to start 2-3 games in 1 week. He's also started almost all of utd's other premier league games.

Saying this, wouldn't surprise me to see Hernandez instead, but then he wasn't exactly brilliant vs QPR.

Yes, but they only need to read 3 or 4 posts first before typing to get the same opinions the were about to write down on RVP every time 🙂

Fact is as mentioned below the new comments will sort this, the other side of the coin is my interaction with AP has been invaded with posts that could have opts to pass by.

It will help solve it if folk get used to checking the "Topics of the Day" before posting. That's a bit of a culture change - a bit like when you hit a forum frontpage and scan the threads - that's what stickies will give us but folk will have to get used to checking their first before posting.

This is where the Sticky Discussion will be a godsend. One Discussion, sticked and listed in the sidebar "Will RVP start on Saturday" - that can run and run rather than mini threads starting up every hour.

"My opinion would be RvP will start tomorrow."

Give it a rest? That's what a forum is for, no?

I tend to feel it certainly isn't the definite benching people have decided. RVP appears to thrive from playing games, Rooney on the other hand has struggled this season as regards fitness, not impossible that he will miss a chunk of the game.

Rooney needs minutes, Fergie said as much.

he's battling genetics and isnt a naturally fit person like RVP or Giggs

Exactly, he will cover far more ground v Real Madrid and will need to be 100% fresh.

I agree to an extent. RvP has thrived from consistent games just as Rooney does when he gets regular games. Both to get 70mins against norwich at least. Viva the bookmark.

Looks decent to me and you're set up pretty well for next week already. I think I'd ditch Onouha with the free but I'm not sure who for, with Santon / Debuchy out of reach. Maybe look at Sunderland?

    Just putting this out there:

    Keep RVP
    Do Sturridge > Lambert

Forward-line for this week would be: Aguero, Lambert, RVP

If Fergie was planning to bench Rooney and RVP for Everton surely he plans to bench them for this game? Same amount of rest inbetween games as the first leg, 3 more point lead in the bag and against weaker opposition.

The only reason for playing is match fitness.
