Papiss Cisse is ruled out of Newcastle’s trip to Anzhi due to a virus, though Hatem Ben Arfa is expected to feature for the Magpies. Jermain Defoe looks set to replace Emmanuel Adebayor up top for Tottenham’s trip to Inter, Victor Moses and Ramirez are left out of Chelsea’s Europa League squad to face Steaua Bucharest, while Steve Clarke is hopeful a number of players can shake off minor injuries for West Brom’s home clash with Swansea:

Alan Pardew has confirmed Papiss Cisse has been omitted from Newcastle’s Europa League squad for tonight’s match against Anzhi due to illness. Speaking to the club’s official website yesterday, the Magpies boss revealed:

“Papiss has been sick since Sunday, so myself and the doctor went to see him this morning to see whether we felt he could travel – with me definitely thinking he could. But he didn’t look well, to be honest, so we’ve had to leave him behind unfortunately.”

Cisse has already risen in price in FPL this week, with more than 8,000 managers snapping him up ahead of a crucial home clash with Stoke. Pardew is a little short in striking options right now – he admitted he was somewhat reluctant to take Shola Ameobi to Russia and is concerned the playing conditions could prove problematic to the player’s long-term knee complaint. Ameobi looks in pole position to lead the line against the Potters should Cisse fail to make it, while Hatem Ben Arfa is edging his way back into contention – Pardew confirmed the Frenchman is set to play some part in this evening’s match after hamstring and fitness issues.

Rafa Benitez has decided to omit both Victor Moses and Ramires from Chelsea’s squad to face Steaua Bucharest tonight. Moses has made just two brief sub appearances in the league since helping Nigeria to the African Cup of Nations last month, while Ramires has proven a key member of Benitez’s starting XI, playing 90 minutes in all but one of the last 10 Gameweeks. Yossi Benayoun is back in the squad after a brief ankle problem and could play a part, with Benitez expected to make plenty alterations ahead of the weekend FA Cup Sixth Round clash against United. Demba Ba is, of course, ineligible this evening, having played for Newcastle in the same competition earlier this season and looks likely to edge out Fernando Torres for Sunday afternoon’s trip to Old Trafford.

Jermain Defoe is expected to return to the Tottenham starting line-up for this evening’s Europa League trip to Inter. Reports indicate that Emmanuel Adebayor is thought to only have a “slight chance” of recovering in time from the knee problem that forced him off against Arsenal last Sunday and, while the Togo international should be fit for this weekend’s trip to Liverpool, the San Siro clash could come too soon. Having only just recovered from a recent ankle injury, Defoe looks likely to lead the line for the in-form north London outfit, while Andre Villas-Boas is also set to welcome Mousa Dembele back – the Belgian has recovered from the knee issue sustained against the Gunners and has returned to full training.

Steve Clarke rolled out a substantial injury update yesterday ahead of West Brom’s weekend home game against Swansea. The Baggies boss admitted that, while a handful of his first-team regulars have struggled to train this week, he is confident the situation will have eased off by Saturday:

“Claudio (Yacob) has a knock, hasn’t trained, but should be okay. Steven Reid has a knock, hasn’t trained this week, but he should also be okay. Jonas (Olsson) didn’t train on Monday but trained yesterday and Youssouf Mulumbu had a migraine but he’s fine now. Hopefully everyone will be fine tomorrow.”

Clarke also went on to reveal that Chris Brunt and Shane Long both sustained twisted ankles in the past week. While Long is now “okay” after picking up the problem in last Saturday’s narrow defeat at Chelsea, Brunt – who missed the Stamford Bridge match altogether with the complaint – remains a real doubt; he attempted to return to training earlier in the week but was forced out after the problem played up again.

Brian McDermott rolled out an injury update first thing this morning. The Reading boss has revealed Adam Federici will remain sidelined with the ankle problem that kept him out of last weekend’s trip to Everton – a bitter blow for the Australian’s 5% FPL owners, with some likely to be without a keeper in light of the reduced fixture schedule. Stuart Taylor is set to step in for the Royals, with Alex McCarthy still not ready to return from a shoulder injury. McDermott also admitted Jimmy Kebe remains a doubt with the groin injury that forced him off at Goodison last time out.

Has anyone ever tried running a team based solely on the FFS watchlist?

I.e. Having the players top of the list and transfering each week to get as close as you can to it?

it's not bad luck. you made an unnecessary early transfer. could have waited and dodged that bullet. people tend to think good punts as 'skill' and risky moves not paying off as 'bad luck'

you are getting confused. 'bad luck' is something with low odds that happens when you couldn't expect it / avoid it. if you go to thin ice and know it could break and make you hypothermic but still you go and the ice breaks, do you expect people to say: 'oh that's bad luck'

this is the same. you knew the risk - did it anyway - backfired - not bad luck.

                You are getting confused.
You are overestimating the probability of a player contracting a virus in a given week.
If Cisse falls ill after 11.30am on Saturday, is this bad luck?

finally, you are realising. that is bad luck in the case you described. you couldn't have avoided it by being rational = making the wanted transfer late = bad luck, you couldn't have known this and couldn't have avoided it. do you see the difference in that scenario and your early Cisse-transfer?

What is the likelihood of a player being ill 3 days before a match?

Rooney did not start the mach for pure tactical reasons. he is not the sort of player that likes to man mark. he is a creative player a player that likes to go after the ball.. each united player last night had a specific job to do and it was working... Rooney would of gone chasing the ball. pushing other players out of position leaving gaps for Madrid to exploit..it in his nature its what he does.....and thats why he was left out of the starting 11...

He wouldn't have been dropped if he was fully fit and in form though. Seems to me that Fergie's got it right,.Welbeck is a fully mobile spoiling striker which suited Fergie's tactics. I'm sure the plan was to get half an hour out of Rooney. We'll never know of course.

I agree, Ferguson was absolutely justified in his decision - it was working perfectly until the sending off.

In the wider scheme of things; I know as an Everton fan I should, by rights, hate Rooney, but it's sad to me that, although he's a great player, he's not become what we all expected him to. I remember being at Goodison when he was 16/17, and he genuinely looked like he would become one of the top 3 players in the world. I'd still put him in the top 50 or so, but he just seems to have lost something along the way.

Yes I agree. He's more important than he is great. There still aren't that many players like him and a lot of the time and because of his versatility, he's been sacrificed to play another role. It's also a shame he's had fitness issues which have probably reduced him. He went to 3 Euro/World cup Finals unfit.

You'll always get "fans" like that - those who hate others' success. I, and most real football fans, have got nothing against Utd; I admire them for their achievements and their consistency.

Being from Liverpool however, I see that Utd hatred in its entirety. It's baffling to me, but I suppose that tribalism will always exist.

mmm...not sure....Saying that the team selected was right for the night is not the same as saying any team with Rooney in it would be wrong...that's just trying to justify SAF's selection...Rooney is an ego player (not a criticism) and this would have hurt him...We'll just have to wait and see if there is any fall out from this...Whatever happens next...if anything...it is a defining moment in Rooneys relationship with SAF and the club and he may well be miffed enough to want to do just about anything...let's face it, he's not the most level headed person in the world..we'll see...

        Hi guys,

I think I know most people will say no, but does anyone think it could pay off to do Demel -> Enrique for -4?

Would mean I could get another player out this week and would be looking to keep long term.

        Federici
        Davies - Shaw
        Sessegnon - Sissoko (c) - Michu - Bale
        Lambert (v) - Sturridge

        Jaaskelainen - Demel - Zabaleta - Jevans - Walcott - Van Persie

The fact that you want Enrique going forward makes it more sensible, but it still requires a cleanie or attacking points to justify the hit, and I can't see 'Pool keeping a cleanie this weekend.

Actually, I think its OK given his good fixtures. I'm considering Cameron -> Enrique for -4. Cameron is no longer nailed on and has averaged 0.7 points per game in the last 7 since I bought him. WIll be glad to be rid of him. I've also got Demel, but i'm going to keep him. He's cheap, chearful and has a DGW coming.

Think I'm doing Demel --> Debuchy for -4 this week.. it's a long-term move and it's -2 this week if you're assuming he'll get at least 2 points. It'd tempt me.

What do people think to bringing in a midfielder for 1 GW only, for a -4 hit?

        GW29: Mata > # + Aguero > Benteke (-8) which means I field 10 instead of 8
        GW30: # > Lampard + Lambert > RVP (-4)

I'm still very tempted to dump. Yes its Mata but if I want say RVP and Suarez and a great midfield and a couple of decent defenders then something has to give and Lampard/Hazard/Sissoko all offer perhaps equal if not greater chance of points. If there wasn't all this talk of Rooney leaving next season I'd say he would be a good alternative to RVP, but I'm not sure there is a good alternative to RVP now so funds have to be found.

        Ive done Mata -> Sisokko

Now Im thinking a -4 to get in Benteke or Remy for Anichebe.

Advantages with Benteke is he has a nice two game run and my mini league rival has him.

Advantages with Remy is nobody has him, hes cheap and I can use the funds next week to upgrade Fellaini to Lamps/Hazard/Oscar etc.

        Any opinions?

Lots of people are looking for a striker who is playing this GW but the names I keep seeing are Lukaku, Cisse (if fit), Remy and Benteke. Why is no one talking about Lambert? Because everyone already has him?

Form (FPL pts) over their last 4 games (not including blanks):

        Lukaku 23
        Remy 19
        Benteke 21
        Cisse 21
        Lambert 30

Although he's proven himself to be pretty much fixture proof, it's hard to ignore the fixtures especially when the team is so low-lying. nor LIV CHE don't seem too easy.

How does Onuoha > Samba look for a free?
I know it seems sideways but Onuoha hasn't started for a couple of weeks now and Samba is a much much bigger goal threat. Plus fixtures are great. I'll pretty much keep him till the end of the season.

        Current team for this week

        Bunn
        Johnson Turner Wilson Pearce
        Bale Michu Guthrie
        Suarez Lambert

        Missing: Walcott Mata Baines RVP

Annoying that Guthrie dissapeared from Reading team as got him thinking he'd play gw27 and this one.

Take 4 point hit to get rid of Guthrie and Baines/Mata or just make the 1 transfer?

        Demel and Zab out for:

        A) GJohnson + Hill
        B) Enrique + Samba
        C) Bassong + Samba

        Have Bego/Bunn as keepers.

As Samba has much greater potential than Johnson has over Enrique, probably B

Someone who's not been mentioned much recently and has a DGW at some point + some semi-decent fixtures: Berbatov. From GW31.

Forgotten man really, strange as he was cemented in my team not too long ago. Could be a good shout, but I'd need convincing that he's a better option that Sturridge/Benteke etc.

At the moment he is behind a long queue of strikers for most people's teams. But he is someone definitely to monitor for the run in when nailed on ness is worth much more.

Certainly a tempter. I'm smug in still having a WC to use, so I can assess then 😉

The only red mark against him is that Fulham will have less to play for. Not going down and no chance of a European finish.

        Bale Michu Sissoko Gerrard
        Benteke Lambert

10 is fine as I definitely wouldn't take a hit for a keeper. I'd probably captain Benteke in that team.

Been without internet for 2 weeks so despite not usually doing this can i please have some advice on what i'm fielding this weekend.

        Bunn
        Pearce*, Cameron*, Carragher, Samba, Davies
        Bale, Guthrie*
        Fletcher, Suarez

Begovic, Fellaini, Mata, Walcott, RVP with 2 FTs

*s are my concern. Pearce - may be 1st choice again after the Wigan humbling without him? Guthrie - anyone know if he is part of McDermott's plans now or what/who's keeping him out? I thought he was back in favour. Cameron - baffles me!

With 2 FTs i can field a full team, it's just which two are most urgent. I'm thinking take out Fellaini and... Guthrie? Or Cameron?

I think when fielding 11 is in serious doubt you should spend your transfers in attack if you can. Also, I wouldn't take out anyone who might play (eg, Guthrie). So Mata and Fell seem the clear moves for me, and you can easily get Mata back in for GW30.

Good point, i want to bring in people with most chance of points (attackers). But i got Mata at 8.9 so i couldnt actually easily get him back unfortunately, and i will want him again with his fixtures.

A Norwich midfielder or Gardner for Sunderland. Not great options, i'll give you that! 😉 Might need to rethink this. I thought i'd be ok with 11 but looking difficult now.

I have same Guthrie concerns. I only got him expecting him to play gw27 and this coming gw. Leaving me short - very annoying. Id looking to get rid of Guthrie as after this week I won't want him, and highly unlikely he'll play this week so no point keeping.
