Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

He may have arrived on these shores as a relative unknown last summer but Premier League defences are now more than familiar with Christian Benteke. Standing six foot three, the young Belgian has battered and bullied many a backline into submission with a series of physical performances highlighting his suitability to England’s top-flight – on his broad shoulders, Villa’s chances of survival may well just depend.

It took him less than 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers. Sent on as a 71st minute sub in the Gameweek 4 home clash against Swansea, Benteke grabbed a goal in a 2-0 win, helping Paul Lambert’s side to their first win of the season. Since then, the former Genk player has started every league match for the midlanders and has played a part in 15 of the 22 goals Villa have scored since his debut – an incredible contribution, which has seen him rack up 11 goals and four assists thus far.

With spot-kick duties also in the bag, Benteke has made a mockery of his initial 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, with 16 bonus points also accrued, has returned 115 points over his 24 appearances – an average of 4.6 points per game. As the season reaches a critical stage for Lambert’s struggling side, Benteke’s displays alone can be immune from criticism; he has scored in two of his last three at home and notched in three of the last four on the road.

Luckily for the Villa faithful, the upcoming schedule smiles kindly on their side. Having slipped back into the drop zone in recent weeks, Lambert’s troops now face the bottom two in back-to-back Gameweeks, with a trip to Reading this weekend followed by a home clash with QPR. Following that, Benteke welcomes Liverpool to Villa Park – a side he registered two goals and an assist against back in mid-December – and with games against Stoke and Fulham also on his agenda in the next five, the potential for points is obvious.

Now up to 7.0 in FPL, and priced at 7.5 Sky Sports game, Benteke has been snapped up by over 25,000 FPL managers this week ahead of a Gameweek that has just six fixtures for us to consider. While Charles N’Zogbia has hinted at a return to his Wigan form in recent fixtures, the Frenchman’s lack of overall consistency has failed to persuade many to snap up his services – instead, it’s Benteke who looks the man most likely. Granted, he may be vying for our attentions with a series of similarly priced strikers such as Romelu Lukaku, Rickie Lambert, Steven Fletcher and Arouna Kone but, as he’s illustrated already, Benteke is more than ready for the battle.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    a) Suarez, Rooney, Sturridge

    b) Suarez, Rooney, Benteke

    c) Sturridge, Rooney, Benteke

    d) Suarez, Rooney, Remy

There's not point keeping a player who you're not confident will play. Is it for a free?

With all due respect, how is this a troll comment, Tinkerman? I've been debating it in my head since Tuesday night. Whether he should have gone all out and started Rooney/Kagawa and whether he really believed he could keep Real out for the 90 minutes. The reason being that in the build up he had talked about how he was sure both teams would score. If that was really the case why didn't he play to win the game with goals in 90 minutes. By studying his tactics it's clear he was trying for a 1-0 or 0-0.

And up to the red card the 1-0 gameplan was working ok. The other thing is that he didn't put Smalling on the bench which bemused me, there was not a single option on the bench that would work if this kind of thing happened. Even Evans was effectively only there just in case Ferdinand/Vidic got injured. The fact he didn't bring Evans on when they were down to 10 men tells you a lot. He left himself with no Plan B. Which is why I think there is good arguments for him both being unlucky and to an extent bottling it.

Don't like the phrase bottling it (what is it supposed to mean?) but I think Fergie was caught out by not reacting to the red card as Jose did. First Modric came on to open the game up and get the two goals and as soon as the second went in, Pepe came on to close it down. In the meantime, Fergie made no subs and only brought Rooney on 20 minutes after the red card.

Several Pool fans have been talking about this in the last few days. The consensus seems to be that despite doing a lot to earn a start, this is tactically the wrong game for him. He won't cope with Bale as well as other options and that's obviously the priority.

He's a decent option after this week though.

Highest rank you have ever had at the end of a GW? Not this season, all seasons.

Remy or Benteke and why? Money no issue.

Also, is Suarez and Sturridge overkill after this week, even with the fixtures, could sell one of them for Rooney instead?

Bentekkers. From the highlights of the QPR - SOT game, Remy was playing the Walcott role. Bentekkers is central to Villa.

Its tough cause Remy has a super small sample size. I say go Benteke unless you need a huge differential. But for only 1 GW I would go Lukaku instead.

if it's for 1 GW I don't see that Lukaku has a great fixture

I know you are in favour of the RvP, Suarez, Sturridge trio, but is Bentekkers a better option than Sturridge, even with the fixtures? So essentially I'd be getting Benteke in now and keeping long-term and selling Danny for Rooney

Well as you said, you know my stance already. I personally plan to own Remy/Benteke/Lukaku for 2 gameweeks and than switch to Giroud in anticipation of the DGW. Along with Rooney/RVP, Sturridge.
I think Swans without Chico are way leakier. I also think Lukaku is the best player of the lot. I would prefer Remy if his and QPRs attacking stats were a bit better. Benteke is the solid pick here, but I think that RDG may tighten up a bit and do better in this relegation 6 pointer. Also a big thing in my decision is I would like to bench that striker next week and with Benteke that will not be a good option.

Remy. I've gone Remy for 2 reasons:

      1) QPR are playing well and working together as a team to stay up. They need Remy to stay up, he will be key.

      2) Villa look terrible, no chemistry or anything, don't even seem like trying to stay up. Played well against City but everyone ups their game against them. Think Lambert might experiment in attack

Yes definitely, especially if its for a hit. Ideally one of Suarez/ Sturridge with Remy and Rooney long term. I'm going Remy, Aguero, Sturridge until I hear of the DGW news and depending on how long the title race is gonna continue for

Rooney will be my (c) GW30 for sure.

Suarez and Aguero are now the same price, so if City have a double that switch is easy, especially with a wc

I've gone for Remy. I just think that he has shown a little bit of class, and I can see QPR picking up now. I just don't trust the Villa attack, although Benteke has been the shining exception, in all fairness to him.

Also, I know nobody else cares about money, but by getting Remy I can get RVP back in for Fletch next week.

So, most of us were thinking Sturridge would be a better shout to Suarez before his hat-trick. Sturridge is now fit. I discussed this on the last page, but i am interested in a few more opinions. I owned Suarez for a long time before the DGW as well and after thinking hard, i sold Suarez and not Sturridge (for Aguero). Now Suarez got that hat-trick but how different would the situation have been if Sturridge was playing on Wednesday. So, now, my thinking is should i be blinded by that hat-trick and get Suarez back asap, or remember that i made that move for a reason, with good logic and remember that Sturridge did not play vs. Wigan.

I guess the new information since you made that decision isn't so much Suarez's goal-scoring potential but Sturridge's injury prone nature. I don't really know if he truly is injury prone or if it's just a bad coincidence.

I had the choice this week: RVP --> Sturridge or Suarez.

I've confirmed Sturridge is now in the team. His speed and threat is superior to Suarez IMO. I watched the Liverpool DGW where Suarez got 15 points, but felt Sturridge was a lot more dangerous. Here's hoping he plays

The problem with Sturridge for me, injuries aside, is that he hasn't been at Liverpool that long and whilst he's done well so far Suarez has performed brilliantly through thick and thin, when Liverpool were playing badly, before Lucas came back and in various systems.

Value is a consideration but in your case what are you going to do with the extra money that 110m tv can't do anyway...

I think it all comes down to pitch time for sturridge. It's difficult right now to be confident over how many minutes he'll get. If he plays 90 every game then he's golden. You know what you'll get from suarez.

Injury prone is not nailed on. Plus Suarez is a world class player if he gets two more yellow cards Sturridge will get dramatically less points. Why take on both risks when you can just take on the Suarez one?
