The summer departure of Didier Drogba looked tailor-made for Romelu Lukaku to barge his way past Fernando Torres in the Chelsea pecking order and justify the club’s decision to splash out £10m for his services in August 2011. It didn’t quite transpire like that, though. In spite of a lack of forward options, Roberto Di Matteo shipped Lukaku off on a season-long loan to West Brom and kept faith in the misfiring Spaniard in a move that played some part in his subsequent downfall.

Handed just two starts in the opening 10 Gameweeks by Steve Clarke, Lukaku’s Fantasy prospects looked initially bleak, with the Baggies boss tending to afford him minutes from the bench late on as first-choice forward Shane Long started to tire. Indeed, it wasn’t until Gameweeks 18-19 that Lukaku finally earned two consecutive starts for his new club – a decision which, when you analyse the statistics, seems as baffling as Di Matteo’s decision to send him to the midlands in the first place.

Lukaku has started 12 games for West Brom, with 13 of his 25 appearances coming from the bench. Focussing on his first XI performances, he has returned nine goals, two assists and 14 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points over those 12 matches – a highly impressive 6.3 points per start. Such has been his level of consistency, Lukaku has either scored, assisted or returned bonus points in 11 of those 12 fixtures; the only blank coming in Gameweek 25 when he was sacrificed just after half-time as the Baggies were reduced to 10 men at home to Spurs.

Bearing in mind he has now started eight of the last 10 when available (he was ineligible to face his parent club last weekend), Lukaku seems to have edged ahead of Long as Clarke’s preferred forward. Although there remain slight concerns over Clarke’s propensity to rotate his front men in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Long’s lack of form certainly helps the Belgian’s cause – the former has failed to produce any returns in each of his last eight starts and has registered a single goal from Gameweek 14 onwards. With his side now past the magic 40 point safety mark, Clarke even shifted to a 4-4-2 in the previous home game – Lukaku duly obliged with a brace and maximum bonus, returning his highest haul of the season.

Up next for the Baggies is a home clash with Swansea this weekend before a couple of road trips take them to Stoke and West Ham – the type of bruising encounters Lukaku is likely to thrive upon. After the Upton Park encounter, Clarke’s side then face home clashes against Arsenal, Newcastle and Wigan in the following five, in addition to a trip to Southampton; certainly, the schedule looks enticing for those eyeing up the 6.5 priced FPL forward.

With the likes of James Morrison also struggling to replicate his early season form, Lukaku seems the one Baggies player we can rely upon to produce the points on a regular basis. Granted, there are other forwards in the mid-price range who look equally appealing, with Rickie Lambert and Christian Benteke the stand out alternatives, but Lukaku’s outstanding consistency may just well seal the deal for some.

Sturridge or Suarez. Suarez or Sturridge.

I can't help but think that Sturridge is more likely to profit from the Spurs high-line than Suarez is to dribble his way through them. But if Suarez goes bananas or Sturridge doesn't start then its a disaster.

Safety and sense says Suarez, stupidity and superstition says Sturridge. (Try saying that 3 times fast)

I'll probably end up having both, as I simply can't afford Sturridge to keep staying out while Suarez gets all the points. The problem is that his price makes my other two transfers in not very appealing to say the least...

That 3mil is really tempting though. Most stuck with rvp at his skyscraper price, Suarez seems pretty much as valuable... Arguably

What has been your best and worst decisions of the season so far?

My best and worst involved the same player in the same gameweek.

I bought Walcott the day before his 26 point haul against Newcastle (best) I initially put the captain on him, only to change it to van persie about half an hour before the deadline (worst)

Not doing Hazard at the start. Benching Michu and playing Graham twice, and both he scored highly. Bringing Bale in for Mata half an hour before the deadline and Bale was left out of squad as partner had baby and Mata scored about 18 points. I could nearly have cried....

Bringing in Walcott for that Newcastle game, getting Bale at 9.3 about 25 weeks ago and sticking by him when all faith was lost, getting RVP GW2.

Choosing Pienaar over Fellaini initially, benching Nathan Dyer Gameweek 1!

    Bunn (ddg)
    davies cueller harte onouha baines
    michu bale wally maloney fellaini
    rvp sturridge giroud...have 2FT and 2.3m

    A: baines + fellaini/maloney + giroud >> martin + sissoko + benteke
    B: onouha + fellaini/maloney + giroud >> martin + sissoko + benteke

with A: Not sure who to get rid of...getting rid of baines (along with fellaini) frees up funds so i can do maloney >> mata next gw BUT wigan have very good fixtures from next week so taking out maloney would be a bit daft (unless i take sissoko out)

with B: really want to get rid of onuha since he doesnt start anymore and this week seems the best time to get rid of him and i get to keep baines BUT this wont leave me with funds to bring in mata

So yeah, my transfer strategy depends on whether i need lots of funds in the bank to bring in mata next gw..however with wigan's fixtures, if i dont want mata then i will keep baines

    Advise?

    On Coutinho.

Lot of people think he won't play against Spurs on account of the need for Bale-controlling tactics (Coutinho being the wrong guy for that job). I agree but I also think Spurs will be giving Pool such a hiding by 60 mins that Rodgers will have to try something else. Cue mind-blowing Coutinho cameo and he never gets benched again.

Hogwash, clearly, but I choose to believe it 😉

If Sturridge is fit, he'll start. Whether Coutinho starting is mutually exclusive to Sturridge starting is yet to be determined.

Whether he starts 4-3-3 and switches to 4-2-3-1 or ends 4-3-3 after starting 4-2-3-1 both Sturridge and Coutinho are most likely to share the minutes.

Coutinho is cheaper and as a one week stop gap/punt is much more preferable if you can afford to leave him on the bench. Sturridge is high risk for his price.

In my opinion, Suarez along with Bale and Man Utd cover is essential.

          I think it'll be:

So currently fielding this for this week:

    (Tremmel)

    Enrique / Wilson / Pearce

    Snodgrass / Bale

    Suarez / Sturridge / Lambert

    (Mata / Fellaini / Evans / Zabaleta / Walcott)

Need any more transfers (for a hit), or just stick with what I've got?

Yeah, considering that. I think anyone I get in now would have to be a season keeper to justify the hit.

Anyone tempted to opt for Rooney instead of RVP?

It would make life so much easier with the money saved. It could go 2 ways with Rooney. The RM benching might fire himself up, or if he's wound Fergie up he could be punished for it.

    Rooney is a differential!
