With four Champions League fixtures taking place over the next couple of evenings, we turn our attentions to the TotelFootball game once again. The Fantasy Football Scout Private Pool is still open to entry and with TotelFootball giving away a free £10 for all new registrations, there’s plenty reason to get involved prior to tonight’s deadline.

As per the rules of the competition, our team must be lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a further four warming the bench in a 15 man squad. You can pick up to two players per team, though if you exceed this allocation, you will be deducted five points per player over that quota.

With only eight teams to choose from, striking a balance is tricky. If you choose to go without points hits, you’ll need two players from seven teams and one player from the remaining club. The deadline is 7.45pm, though, meaning we can tinker with our picks for tonight’s two games after the official squad lists are rolled out – a real advantage for those favouring the hands-on approach.

Scout Pool Week 3 Round-Up

Pokerface was top scorer in the Scout Private Pool for Week 3 after an 80 point return. Unfortunately, he decided not to enter the Main Pool – the top performer there also produced 80 points and, thanks to a £2.50 bet, picked up £107.71 for his troubles.

Optimus also impressed last time round, supplying two of our top four teams. His sides racked up 78 and 77 points respectively – in a similar story to Pokerface, he would have been quids in if he had played the Main Pool; those scores would have helped him to joint-second and fourth in Week 3 and a share of the cash. The same applies to Inozza. He secured third place in the Scout Pool on 77 points, a tally bettered by only two players in the Main Pool.

Golfboy89 and elninorules were both in the money, though. The former took fifth in the Scout Pool with 76 points, with his decision to enter the Main Pool and stick £2 on his team helping him pick up £17.23. Elninorules profited twice in Week 3. One of his teams produced 75 points – that earned him joint-sixth place in the Scout Pool and £17.23 in the Main Pool, thanks to his £2 bet. Another of his sides produced 73 points – while that was joint fourteenth in the Scout Pool, it was enough to return £8.62 from a £2 stake.

Looking at the levels of scoring, then, the competition in the Scout Pool looks tougher than the Main Pool right now. Our top four teams would all have grabbed a share of the cash if their managers had chosen to take a flutter in the previous Week – clearly, then, the potential for profit is enticing ahead of this evening’s deadline.

Last 16: Week 4 Selections

Looking at the results from last week’s games, it’s intriguing to see that three of the four second leg hosts progressed to the last eight, with Man United the only exception. Indeed, every home side found the net – a pattern we’re backing to continue over the next couple of evenings.

For tonight’s game at the Nou Camp, Barcelona have it all to do. Two goals down from their San Siro reverse, the Spanish side will be hoping they can take their La Liga form into the match against Milan – they have dropped two points at home all season. With that in mind, Lionel Messi is impossible to overlook as one of our two forwards, while Jordi Alba’s raiding runs from left-back earn him a spot in the back-four.

While Schalke have won each of their last three in the league, including a weekend derby win over Dortmund, the news that Klass Jan-Huntelaar has been ruled out with a knee injury is a real blow to their chances. Nevertheless, we’re backing them to overcome Galatasaray after drawing 1-1 in Turkey. At the back, Benedikt Höwedes gets the nod after scoring twice in this season’s tournament, while Michel Bastos comes in on the left of midfield for the hosts. We’re willing to take a punt and opt for the big-game temperament of Didier Drogba over Burak Yilmaz as a route into the Galatasaray attack.

With Franck Ribery ruled out for tomorrow evening’s showdown and Bastian Schweinsteiger suspended, we’re opting for Arjen Robben in the Bayern midfield. The Dutchman is set to benefit from Ribery’s absence and looks a decent differential as Jupp Heynckes’ welcome the Gunners to the Allianz Arena after their 3-1 first leg win at the Emirates. Philipp Lahm gets the nod at the back – he warmed up for this one with a pair of assists in the weekend home win over Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Malaga are in poor attacking form as they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit against visitors Porto. The Spanish outfit have scored just one goal in their last four in all competitions and their lack of bite bodes well for the Portuguese side. We’re hedging our bets here, though, and drafting in a couple of players from both sides – centre-half Martin Demichelis brings plenty goal threat from the back for the hosts, having found the net four times in La Liga this term, while Isco has produced two goals and a pair of assists over five appearances in the tournament so far. For Porto, we’ve went for keeper Helton and playmaker Lucho Gonzalez as our picks.

Just thinking out loud here, but saving a transfer this week will be pure gold considering all the question marks about game-dates and that there's an international break and two weeks between GW30 and GW31.

Getting RVP for this game is more than likely to bring you more than the excess 4 points you need, so that's a good move no matter hos you look at it.

I guess, if you have pressing transfers it's a different story. But what is a pressing transfer? 😉 I love my team for next team, and I'm having problem ditching one player for RVP, ditching two for a hit is really tough.

I'm saving mine, thereby playing Schneiderlin as fifth mid in a 3-5-2, which is fine as Saints are at home.

I then have two next week, to consider Yaya, Fellaini, Zabaleta or De Gea incoming. I might do Demel>Zabaleta and Mig>De Gea actually, then Hunt>Ruiz/Anichebe ready for doubles and continue to always play one cheapie each week.

        Team is

        Mig
        Davies Wilson Clyne
        Mata Cazorla Schneiderlin Bale Michu
        RVP(c) Saurez

Bench Rudd Hunt Demel Harte (3.2m bank)

I think the addition of De Gea and Zab will leave me a strong, balnced team for the run in and covering DGW's. And Ruiz for Hunt makes sense, just rotate him with Schneiderlin who is a surprisingly consistent scorer for the price (4.4) 🙂

I don't really get the Sturridge love-in on this site.

He's constantly been no.1 or no.2 on the watchlist yet he has been injured and not even doing anything to impress. His last goal came about only because Gerrard generously gave him a penalty out of sympathy.

The love for him seems to be largely based on the fact he's playing striker in a team scoring goals. Chelsea score a lot of goals...and Torres plays up front...but does he score many goals? No. It doesn't automatically mean you are going to get more shots or outperform others.

Liverpool have scored a lot of goals lately...but where have those goals mainly come from? SUAREZ

Without Suarez they lack a creative spark, if he's off his game then Liverpool play poorly (see: West Brom game)

You can't just URGE a player to perform (similar to the Baines love in on here earlier on)

They need to show it first and consistently. There is no way of judging Sturridge's consistency right now. It smacks of desperation trying to force him to have some and to match Suarez when he's barely played football all season.

There are many good budget strikers about and they've been doing it consistently all season and for a cheaper price tag (Lukaku/Benteke/Lambert et al)

For the moment, it's a complete shot in the dark.

I'm only trying to add a touch of cynicism to the obvious love-in on here.

Plenty have lost out by stubbornly sticking with Sturridge over Suarez because of their views on the situation.

Interesting viewpoint I guess. Many people are considering his Bolton days, and he has turned in a couple of good performances (City was one). But yeah, it's not like he's the second coming of Christ.

That said, I think he's a better pick than Lukaku, Benteke and Lambert considering his role, the team he plays for, the fixtures and his own "selfishness".

I don't agree. I think Lukaku, Benteke and Lambert have an advantage because they are the dominant attackers in their teams. They are getting a monopoly of chances and everything goes through them. Liverpool score plenty of goals without needing Sturridge to be part of it.

His PPG since he joined Liverpool are better than the 3 mid range options you mention. This even when lacking some match fitness. Plus Liverpool have got a great run of fixtures. I don't think the love in is anywhere near as unjustified as you suggest.

But there is plenty of examples of players having honeymoon periods when they join a club. And as I said, his last goal only came from the generosity of Gerrard.

He's only got 1 bonus point since joining too. And the injury proneness can't be simply ignored. Buttner has an excellent PPG...

What about the 3 goals he scored in the 4 games before that? You can't just discount those on the basis that they were part of a honeymoon period. Had either Downing or Suarez passed to him vs Spurs he'd have had two tap-ins, so there was no evidence from that game that he will stop scoring.

Did you let RvPs 'honeymoon period' with Utd stop you getting him? Or Michu's at Swansea? Or did you just see two players scoring lots of points and quite fancy getting them.

I take your point but it even looks like Liverpool players don't particularly want to pass to him because he's so selfish.

And RVP and Michu are different in that they instantly appeared to be the dominant attackers in their respective teams. Therefore they looked like the only guys worth having from Man Utd and Swansea early on.

Whereas Sturridge has come into a team with Suarez who is leading the way for the golden boot and on outrageous form himself.

Those who fancied Sturridge were mainly seeing at as a differential to Suarez that could match him and be better value. But that's just simply not the case. There is no evidence that will be the case either. Suarez + a budget striker from another team is still looking like the optimal strategy.

Your first sentence must be trolling so I'll ignore that.

Players shouldn't just be picked on whether they are the dominant attacker or not. That would make Rooney unownable and yet many people here are seriously considering him over Rvp.

I'm of the view that the optimal strategy is Suarez + Sturridge and not any of the others you mention. It's clearly higher variance given the concentration on Liverpool so it might not be great for ML leaders but in my view it has the highest mean of any combination for their combined price.

I did a compare this morning as I got Sturridge in, but have £6m in bank so could do the upgrade this week, just to block rivals but wanted to see between him and Suarez.

Since he played his first game in GW22, Sturridge has played 464mins compared to Suarez's 740mins.

Suarez has 7 goals and 1 assist.

Sturridge has 4 goals and 1 assist.

All the other stats if pro-rated up for the mins there's not much in it.

Suarez in past couple of weeks is massively overperforming on shot conversion in comparison to the rest of the season also.

Suarez includes the hatrick against Wigan which is one of the games that Sturridge missed, where you would expect he potentially would have shared some of the goals/points.

That Russian c**t of an owner thinks that JT has too strong an influence at Chelsea. He's making Benitez bench him. I don't think Rafa's so stupid as to think that David Luiz is a better player than JT. His knee injury is the perfect 'excuse' not to play him

Think Ba could be a good differential for you over the next three fixtures - will start 1/2 and come off the bench 1/2. Should be enough for him to score some points. If it comes off you could be in the top 5. If not, well, its only a game!

Was thinking of doing Demel and Lukaku, to Azpi and Benteke. Good move?

I would keep Lukaku for another 2 weeks, plus it's such a sideways move

Azpil I'm tempted by but not sure about rotation issues now Terry is back in contention

WBA have two away games, and a blank coming up. Well actually, forget blanks/doubles for now coz it's all mayhem.

THe two away games worry me. Stoke and West Ham though. Maybe I will keep Lukaku then , but might bench him and keep a 5 mid.

Would you do Rafael then and not Azpi?

Further to Suarez v Sturridge talk above

Games they played together in the league

    Suarez, 527mins played, 4 goals and 3 assists. 45points

    Sturridge, 450mins played, 4 goals and 2 assists, 33points

Main place Sturridge is losing is the bonus points at the moment, but also he only completed 2 of the 6 games he has played in so far and didn't start one of them either.

1 more assist, but played an additional 77mins which is pushing another game overall.

Not as much in it as you would think.

        £3.6million price difference also.

Sturridge is also classed as injury prone on here, but think that's a bit harsh at the moment as it was the same injury reoccuring for the 2nd games missed.

I was looking to dump him for Suarez (as I have the funds), but for the price difference I think it's worth sticking with Sturridge. After the weekend there is a 2 week gap for him to get over his injury, if it is still not 100% recovered.

The other factor, and crucal one is finishing. Sturridge had a clear chance in previous game that Suarez would almost certainly put away. I doubt however if Sturridge would have put the Suarez goal away so readily.

Suarez is strange though. Think the majority of his 22 goals have been good finishes.

Barely any tap ins or scrappy goals etc.

BUT he has taken 158 shots overall and of the other 136 shots only 31 have been on target......

Also the stats on comparison have Sturridge's goal conversion at 14.8, to Suarez's 13.9.

i am an lld fashioned dotn't read into stats chap 😉 I go by, class wll always reap rewards in the long term, watching Suarez play, hisruns off defenders throughout a game are superb. He is the leading GS in the PL for a reason.

Agree 100%, stats don't tell everything.

Suarez runs are superb aswell and he is a better player.

His finishing though, I think a lot of his misses aren't remembered and are brushed under. He's had a hell of a lot of shots off target, so that takes the statistical factor out of the question.

Ie. a pea roller from 20 yards classed as on target vs a belter where there was an amazing save.

If you missed the target with a shot, you missed. Simple as (for the most part).
