Kenny Dalglish made an unremarkable return to European football with Liverpool and he masterminded his troops to a 0-0 stalemate in Prague. The draw with Sparta has Liverpool well placed for a last 16 Europa League place, while Dalglish had the opportunity to take a passing glance at some fringe players – including Joe Cole.

Liverpool’s lineup saw the likes of Sotorious Kyrgiakos partner Jame Carragher in defence, while 19-year-old Danny Wilson was deployed at left-back in a 4-4-2, allowing Glen Johnson to revert to the right full-back role. David Ngog took the striker’s role with Raul Meireles again given the job of providing the support, as he looked to prolong his extraordinary scoring streak.

Dalglish was without groin injury victim Steven Gerrard and he took another casualty in midfield on the night as Fabio Aurelio suffered his own groin injury. Dalglish had this to say on the Aurelio setback…

“It’s an adductor strain. It’s not too bad. Midfield was the last place we needed an injury. Obviously Fabio would prefer to play somewhere else than midfield but needs must.”

Aurelio’s injury saw him replaced by Joe Cole on 38 minutes. That shackled Meireles in a deeper midfield role as Cole was pushed up as support for Ngog.

This was Joe Cole’s first appearance under Dalglish following recurring knee problems for the former Chelsea trickster. Cole has been a non-starter for Liverpool since his arrival at Anfield and in Fantasy terms his inability to maintain fitness and cement a starting role has been a major disappointment. The subject cropped up in Dalglish’s post-match interview, and just as he has done with new-signing Andy Carroll, the Liverpool boss stressed the need for patience with Cole.

“Joe’s a valuable asset for us but obviously he’s not going to pick up his form immediately. We’re not going to expect him to be the Joe Cole who came here in the summer straight away…Form’s temporary and class is permanent: that’s where we stand with Joe Cole. We’ll give him a bit of time to get himself up to speed and then we can see him produce something for us.”

The second-leg with Sparta falls before the Gameweek 28 trip to Upton Park. Steven Gerrard and Dan Agger remain injury doubts for that, although Dalglish offered us plenty of reassurance on their situation – indicating that they will be back in the frame…

“We’ll see when we go back. I don’t think he’ll be too long before he’s fit and I don’t think Daniel Agger will be too much of a problem either.â€

Martin Kelly and Martin Skrtel were also rested last night; both look likely to be back in the equation but it will be interesting to see if Dalglish keeps them preserved for the West Ham trip. Fantasy Managers will certainly be hoping that this is the case.

“We left Martin Kelly and Martin Skrtel out as well because young Martin Kelly has been through an awful lot in the last seven games and has been playing with a few bumps and bruises. This gave him the opportunity to refresh himself, and Martin Skrtel got injured at Chelsea but carried on – and we didn’t want to take a chance.”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yes the game last night was crap - but Liverpool in Europe were always masters of shutting teams out away from home, especially in their heyday.

Given their current situation, Kenneth obviously decided that it was prudent to pursue and safety-first policy.

I'd say their resurgence under Dalgleish is quite interesting (I can't quite bring myself to describe it as exciting, though).

I just thought especially if ManU have double this week, most teams will have begovic as part of their WC teams. With a bit of luck begovic will have a cr*p game and VDS might pick up some points.

              You never know.

PS: I think Manu might concede against all of the teams that you mention above. So not such a bad idea.

Here's a question - do you ever put your personal teams players in your FF team or avoid them thinking you don't want to jinx it.

I have no liverpool players in there as I'm always cautious for personal reasons where I have man u players in as I think if they do well at least its a bonus. I dont purposely avoid liverpool players just for that reason as if they are delivering then its all good but I'm always cautious! Anyone else

I'll put the in if I think they're the best for the team - I don't take any of the usual partisan considerations on board at all when I think FPL (I'll even have a few Arsenal players in there usually!).

It's been a great week for England in the CL - let's hope we get all-English semi finals. Spurs v Arsenal in the final would be insane.

            Rudi - thanks, and you.

Well..I'm looking at your midfield and I'm thinkig that you have VDV and Fabregas out this gameweek and potentially Adam too, leaving you with 2 midfielders worst case scenario. Berba isn't doing any harm and will probably play this gameweek and has a potential double.

So I would definatly do something with the midfield. I'd try and keep hold of Fabs, if possible, but realise it's a lot of cash to sit on your bench and as Adam is only a cheapie I'd suggest shipping VDV. The obvious candidates are Cahill, nice fixture in GW28 and double in GW29. Young is also a good shout imo, nice upcoming fixtures (BLA bol WLV). Not an easy call but both good options.

      reasons not to captain tevez:
      1)fulham has improved defensively.
2)mancity not do well at home attacking wise because of the formation they play.
3)dzeko is back and tevez is likely to play in the lw or rw like what he did in the europa league.

None of those reasons are enough for me not to captain Tevez. Especially don't think that Dzeko will impact on Tevez's points (and I say that as someone very close to getting Dzeko over Tevez a couple of weeks ago and mighty relieved I didn't).

        Reasons to captain Tevez:

        1. He's been the most potent striker in the league this year, playing at home against mid-table opposition.
        2. He's on penalties and is the focal point of his team.
        3. If anything he does better with Dzeko.

You can talk shite sometimes boom.

Not one player would have gotten into the rangers team 10 years ago the only one close would be Jelavic. just shows how much Scottish football has deteriorated.

he's got height and a bit of pace. thats it. Scored a good goal v hibs last year to win the league last year but apart from that nothing.

Lets put to bed this Fabregas v Rooney Saga. Yes i know its pretty anal but still id rather be like that than let some nonsense go forth that they play in same area or position or are in some way comparable in roles. Here's Man Uniteds last home game when Rooney and Berbatov were paired for balance and Arsenal last home game.

Fabregas Average Position over the 90min - in the centre circle:
Select tactical formation and then average position

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=293058&cc=5739

Rooney Average position : Centre Forward

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=293115&cc=5739

Heres there heat maps over the same games:
Simple select heat map and the player you want to view
    Compare Fabs :
    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=293058&cc=5739

    To Rooneys:

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=293115&cc=5739

Rooney is more advanced, Fabs plays deeper and covers more ground defensively. In fact Rooney average position is further forward than RVP! And Fabs is the same as Andersons.

There let us never speak of this nonsense again 🙂

Im not believe me. Wasnt here last night read back to see AP quote Mystic Greg post which was good mind as somehow validating his argument. Then Attila point out to him it didnt and that others also made this point (Mnl, Andy85, etc) and he still blindly said that it didnt again.

So now its put to bed . Done.

Greg didnt use heat maps. He used passing stats. Completley different thing and nothing to do with average position or playing position.

"Well done, you did exactly what you accused greg of doing – using stats over 90mins to support your theory."

Eh no I didnt. He used meaningless stats. Where you lay the ball off cant be used to derive average position. Just like Koscienly layed the ball of twice in Barca game in the attackning third doesnt make him an Am.

Yes of course I got involved like everyone does when someone is putting forward something which is such grossly untrue., there is no "us only " club to a comment. If you want i can be really anal and post the other games but that would take up the full forum and i now people dont want it.

"ll this gives you is what you dream of every day. More attention"

Really? Yes its that simple. Or maybe as everyone knows by now I cant stand when people try to distort facts / stats to suit themselves.

You said Rooney and Fabregas play the same position / role/ area of whatever you want to call it.

They dont now stop trying your best Sarah Palin impersonation by ignoring the simple facts. You would make an excellent politian btw.

      Ding ding Round 23.
Logic and evidence will not work in this case. As I asked last night:

Jack believes that Wayne Rooney can do better, he is below his zenith.

Jill believes that Wayne Rooney will not do any better. He is at his zenith.

Who rates Wayne Rooney more, Jack or Jill?

      I got the answer: "Whateverrrrrrr"

      Really logical response.

You need to stop doing this. I've been planning all morning to make a similar post using heatmaps!!

In general, relevant are isolated chalkboards anyway? Heatmaps/average position maps are vastly superior because they give an indication of where players play relevant to the rest of their side. And so, these maps show that Rooney plays up top with Berbatov, and Fabregas isn't too far away from the rest of his midfield.

Agreed, one game proves nothing. It's no coincidence that dbronaldo picked a game where Rooney scored twice, so - I didn't watch the game - I'd imagine that he played in a much more advanced role than he has for the majority of games recently.

Still, there's no getting away from the fact that Rooney and Cesc simply don't play in the same position. But the point Greg made, about the number of goals Rooney has been involved in being virtually the same as last year, is a good one, as he's clearly been playing in a much deeper role than last year.

Makes you wonder how far ahead United would be if Rooney was actually playing well.

One off occasion though, having gone to the 2001 final i can say it's like no other football game. It's a true spectacle of awesomeness hence i'm not worried about the price. If it's Chelsea vs Arsenal though, disaster! 😛

Yeah I'm definitely thinking about it, but I haven't looked into it at all yet - other than reading about the prices this morning. When do they go on sale?

If I did buy a ticket then I'd probably end up being in the awkward position of wanting Barca to reach the final! I'd absolutely love to see them, as much as I dislike them!

Eh? This is all a bit silly really, as Rooney's position changes from game to game depending on the circumstances, i.e. formation, opposition, etc.

Definitely not C. No need to take a points hit this week if you don't have to (no points hit is set to be a nice differential).

Option A is probably best but I'm thinking Odemwingie away to Stoke isn't that bad. For me you should have an option D - Fabs out for ??? and save a transfer or avoid a points hit (do you have 2 freebies?).

With 2 freebies I would do Fabs and Paintsil out this GW.

jolly good start to the weekend. co-worker sacked for flirting with an employee via Facebook. I have to come in on less than 3 hours sleep to cover his arse for a 14 hour shift. chewed out by company inspector during this shift Im not even supposed to be at, just helpng out. and my left nasal cavity is ridden with polyps, making simple breathing out of one side of my nose impossible, a condition that has been developing over time and is now utterly unbearable.

    Hows everyone else doing?

Last season you'd get slaughtered for suggesting that Rooney isn't world class, and doesn't compare to Messi.

This season you get slaughtered for saying he's underperforming.

So, it follows that Rooney has been at his best - which is world class - all season. Hmmmmmmm....... 😕

From his analysis of Arsenal players over the last few months, I'd guess AP doesn't sit down and watch too many matches with Cesc in to really know what position he plays in.

        Arrgh, work to do but....

I really wasn't, not at all. This has escalated into a Rooney vs Fabs stat fest, which is thanks to Dbronaldo and his excellent politics chat.

It initially started as a comparison between rooneys position this year, and last year, trying to explain his perceived massive underachievement. I suggested it was because he is dropping deeper this year playing ROUGHLY in the same place as fabregas plays when he is dictating attacks for Arsenal. In simple terms, he's become the provider from deep, rather that the goal scorer at the front of the 433. This all gets lost though in the AP IS SARAH PALIN! kind of posts.

Just saw this in an article linked from Total FPL - http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_6759045,00.html

Did not realise that there are PL games on same time as FA Cup Final... what a joke. Having CL final at Wembley is screwing up the fixtures this year.

So there is going to be more postponements and if Man U or Chelsea get to the final, a real mess! Wish I still had my WC available!

The Defining Fixtures That Could Finish The Season:

April 26/27: Champions League semi-finals first leg.

April 30: Arsenal v Manchester United.

May 3/4: Champions League semi-finals second leg.

May 7: Manchester United v Chelsea

May 14: FA Cup final and penultimate round of Premier League fixtures.

    May 15: Liverpool v Tottenham.

May 17 or 18: Second rearranged date of Chelsea v Manchester United.

    May 18: Europa Cup final.

May 22: Final Premier League weekend.

    May 28: Champions League final.

I know, crazy isn't it. That means there could be a blank week in gameweek37 for some teams with fixtures possibly brought forward to give some doubles. I guess we’ll just have to wait until the semi’s have been played and see what it looks like..

I know the last few FA Cup finals have been crap, but having it at the same time as a round of fixtures is annoying. The FA Cup final should be one of those events every football fan in the country would sit down and watch.

The Premier League are try their very hardest to undermine it, which is a shame.

Although there was very little choice as you cannot play on CL final pitch for something like 10 days. Most of league playoffs have been moved because of this. If CL final was not moved to a Saturday and stayed on a Wed then the FA Cup final could have been played on 28th.
