With a break from Premier League action this weekend, we’re presented with some breathing space to allow us to take stock and assess strategies for success for the remaining Gameweeks.

This season has seen the evolution of template midfields and attacks with the same names rotation across thousands of Fantasy squads. As a result the defence has become a key area for differentials and while clean sheets have been hard to come by all season, the quest for defenders who can return attacking points and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus, remains a key one.

In this latest Numbers Game article for Members, we take a look at the Gameweek OPTA statistics gathered over the past four Gameweeks to analyse those defenders who have offered the best potential in these areas.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi all:

I posted this previously in another forum, but did not receive a response . . . Here it is:

Another “greenie” question(s) . . . I’m a little confused about the term “price-protection” which is used on these boards sometimes. I’ve searched the FPL league and don’t see a mention of it. It sounds as if it’s usually (or only?) used when someone is injured to prevent his value from dropping too far?

Is price-protection only used when a player is injured, or are there other reasons that this is used? Is a player automatically price-protected when they are injured, or are there other factors to take into account also? For how long does this price-protection last? Is there anywhere online where I can go see who is price-protected and for how long? Is this kind of a “dark science” type of thing that not too many people know when it is being utilized and when it is not in effect?

Sorry for the million and one questions, but this is one part of this Fantasy League which I have not been able to understand and it sounds pretty critical in some player movement decision-making.

I’m sure most of my questions can be answered in just a few sentences. Thanks, in advance, for enlightening me.

The reason you are struggling to get a sensible reply is because nobody really knows! 😉
You can see who is protected at http://totalfpl.com/
The rises tend to be more accurate than the falls. Update will tell you who has risen/fallen or flagged/unflagged.

The only problem with totalfpl is it doesnt zeroise when protection is lifted so you dont really know who has come out of protection. I tend to read it in conjunction with crack the code and fpl's transfers in.

And the poster is right - you cant find anything about it on fpl's website.

You aren't suppose to find it on the FPL website. It's a secret formula that others try to predict yet haven't worked out fully yet. It changes during the season etc. If the transfers in & out were hidden, it would be alot harder to work out. Using % owned would only be rough.

"Possible" is really for close to a rise & might go over the limit by the time the price changes occur. I do them quite a few hours before they are due except on the weekends where I like to sleep in abit after going out. Struggling abit atm lol.

It's more the time difference. Normally at work when price changes occur. I just do the prediction when I wake up. It's quite a good link if you read the next couple of posts after the first one.

But to answer another part of your question... Yes players get price protection for more than being injured. Eg Transferred to another club, or Cahill got PP after coming back from Asian games etc. It doesn't Protect a players price from falling. Eg Carroll, his price is dropping fast at mo.... Once he's back from injury he will be PP, so I guess it more protects rapid price increases?

Transferred to another club seems to have been excluded from price protection. Bent & someone who I forget have proved that. Carroll changing to Liverpool hasn't affected him with price protection either I think.

Perhaps transferring to another club only results in price protection if the player's previous club was not in the Premier League.

Obviously new to the Premier League equals protection. Changing clubs in the EPL also provided protection but this season, it seems no longer the case.

Surely it's worth hanging onto the player who is about to have a double in GW29? Personally I'm not that keen on getting in any of the players you list right now. You not tempted to follow everyone else and drop an Arsenal player for Cahill, keep him for his double and then decide on your next move?

I already have Cahill. Now that I look at it, I'll Def need to drop Rodallega. Gonna take a punt on Gyan for the long-term.

ok looked at your team. You're definitely light up front. I would say you need Tevez for the nice fixtures coming up, it's probably worth playing with 10 men next week to do that. You've got some nice players to play over the coming weeks so just plug the obvious gaps. Gyan is playing well, but he's got two bad away fixtures coming up, and by the time the fixtures get good again Welbeck could be back, which could hurt his potential.

More trades is the answer. They aren't protected now. They were protected for 8 or so days. Alot of their trades in occurred during these 8 days. These trades were useless as they start at 0% when protection finishes. Cahill is at least 50% imo. Haven't looked at the other two.

It's impossible to rate RVP so highly when his top scoring league season is 11 goals. He might beat that this year.

I agree when on form he's unstoppable, but unfortunately for him and Arsenal, he stops far to often.

I think that his injury proneness may be partly his fault as well. Obviously no player can stop a leg breaking challenge etc etc. But a good physical body helps to stay fit and if he doesn't have that then he isn't an all round good player. But when he is on the pitch and at his best, he is a different class.

Staying injury free might just be the most overlooked quality a player can have.

Look at Ronaldo at Man United. Part of his dominance was because he was never injured.

That's not a question of him being out of form or inconsistent though, it's through injury. He doesn't really goes through dry spells like Rooney or Torres do (and are arguably still going through).

The closest I've ever seen him being to out of form is at the World Cup, where he was being utilised in the wrong manner and was dependant on service from Sneijder (who hates him, so doesn't pass to him), Robben (who doesn't pass to anyone) and Dirk Kuyt.

That's a fair enough point. It's still yet to be seen how bad those dry spells are.

On the evidence of 08/09, which was his only mainly fit season with us, he was pretty consistent. He really carried the side for long spells of that season when no one else looked good enough or interested.

I just think what is important is the value of the player to the team. If RVP can make up for his lack of appearances with 25 goals which a top striker should be scoring each season, then I would agree.
You can't simply base it on a scoring rate. If he played all 38 games who says he could keep that up. Ole Gunner Solkjaer had a great scoring rate too but I wouldn't put him alongside the great strikers of the time.

RVP can be a quality player when on the pitch there is no doubt about that.

What's this about Sneijder hating him?

He was also absolutely bloody awful against Barca the other night! If a certain potato headed footballer had put in that performance the wolves would have been howling on here.

He didn't have a lot to work with in all fairness. Arsenal saw so little of the ball that all he could do was play on the shoulder and hope for service.

He was pretty wasteful when he did get the chances, but "absolutely bloody awful" is harsh. Plus it was rather an anomaly in a string of good performances, Rooney and Torres are regularly having poor games.

Gran - dunno, I hate to stereotype, but in-fighting the the Dutch national side is hardly a new thing.

From what I hear, the pair of the have bickered over set-pieces and the like since youth level.

How, as a fan, you choose to see these things is the crux of the matter. I saw him shanking shots over time after time, you saw him getting into good positions with little service.

As far as the this player > that player business, i think i'll leave that to the pro's. Fan opinion doesn't count for diddily.

The game was great the other night.

I mean the only thing that really really matters in football is the result and Arsenal dug that out (in a way that would make Fergie proud).
But lets face it, they were battered for a fair proportion of that match.
I don't know what they can do to turn things in their favour at the nou camp other than attack and score at least 2 goals and hope that Barca fluff their lines. 2 goals gives them a chance of losing the game and going through.

It could happen, I hope it does but it's a long shot.

oh I saw the shanking shots over the bar too, I'm not saying he played well, not at all!

RVP does that from time to time, but his work rate, dead-ball delivery and link-up play normally makes up for that. As it was, Arsenal had so little of the ball, he didn't really get the chance to get involved in the play.

The rare times we did attack, it was on the counter, so it essentially rendered him an out-and-out striker playing on the shoulder, rather than the unconventional playmaker forward that offers so much more.

I think if we're looking at the last year in total, which is a reasonably fair way of looking at it, then Tevez is the best striker.

        Sehwag Styris H.singh
        Porterfield Watson Broad
        Bell Baidwan

When selecting my team i didnt have a budget and it seems all to expensive in my eyes.

Ah, I was looking at January onwards.

I think my top 6 at the start of the season was

      United
      Chelsea
      Liverpool
      Arsenal
      Spurs
      City

The biggest suprise of the season is Chelseas fall. I really thought United were well set this year but a lot of that was based on Rooney and Valencia carrying on from last year. I never expected it to be Berbatov and Nani.
Liverpool I thought would bounce back from an awful season, really thought that was a blip, but I guess not.
And Arsenal have exceeded my expectation in particular their away form.
