Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

Can't wait for the new FPL season, should be a cracker this year I fear how well United will do though I like Moyes as a long-term option but for the first couple of seasons we could go backwards instead of forwards. Still if it works out in the future i'm happy with that.
I'm also looking forward to the showing of who got players for this week of TWS, and to see what way the bidding went, should be fun

        1. Because we have no idea how much players will cost.

We have a rough idea of what prices players would be, also it's not necessarily about which exact players you'll pick but different ways you can set up your team in terms of rotation and where you spend your £. If it were teams with actual players' names then I'd agree its completely pointless. But there's nothing wrong with a rough plan at this stage.

Seems pretty good I don't like Volland though, also you have 5 players who won't go through to the semis and a further two who are punts for this week who may then lose their place (Fer and Morata) with only six free transfers.

Bit risky with all of Chalobah, Fer, Altman, Volland and Moreno don't you think? These are players that don't seem nailed on. Take a punt on a few of them, but maybe not all?

Also I don't see why anyone would vote this discussion down.

If discussion rating (up/down voting) is to have a major effect, would it be better to sort the comments by rating as the default rather than by date? I am not sure how many people will bother changing it from the default otherwise.

We considered it but that's a big change for the whole community to take in. As it is, folk can choose. I used the rating sort every few hours to see what discussions I may have missed. I think that's how it works best - as a catch up.

Well if you keep getting downvoted for technically unuseful comments that are meant to be amusing rather than helpful. You have -2 so far for this one, and its just a typical post from you. I found it mildly amusing, but not enough to give it an upvote.

If you could make one change to FPL for the new season, what would it be?

Mine would be that only 6 bonus points should be awarded for each match.I think it is ridiculous that the most boring matches are awarded the greatest number of bonus points. One recent 0-0 draw resulted in no less than 5 players being awarded 2 bonus points each.

When there is a tie on PPI scores (if they are still to be used), the players involved could be separated by giving an order of priority to the various components (goals, tackles, passes, misses, saves, own goals, etc.) that contribute to the PPI scores.
    Then they could either
    (a) Give the components different values to say 2 places of decimals, or
    (b) Start by comparing the most important component, then the second most important and continue until there is a difference, or
    (c) Start by discounting the least important, then the second least important and continue until there is a difference.

Disagree, in boring game there are still players who have been better than others. It may well be that a certain manager has told his players to shut out the other team, therefore in this instance defenders should be rewarded for doing so.

The idea was to have a rule-based system specified in advance for breaking the ties, rather than rely on some person or committee's subjective judgement.

seen a few team composition strategies. i think i will settle for something like-

    4.5-4
    5-4-4-4-4
    11-10-6-5-4.5
    13-11-10

    reason being-

    1. i think a cheap defense at the start will be the way to go as cs are few at the start and it's better to wait and see which teams are consistent at the back.
    2. allows to fit in Bale,Mata,RVP,Cavani,Higuain
    3. whoever from your big hitters fail to impress gets replaced by the cheapie who shows consistency and frees up cash to upgrade the defense after 4-5 gws.
    4. you probably won't miss the big haul from a big hitter as almost all are covered. (there's always a big haul from a big hitter early on)

Admittedly this is all conjecture until the player list comes out (and then it becomes a different sort of conjecture) but I reckon there's too much money in strikers and not enough in midfielders, particularly given the rise of the goalscoring FPL midfielder.

          All, you need is, ...

Yeah I can't disagree with any of them. I had Coutinho in the season run-out (can I say I coined that word?). If the rumours are true that Mourinho is willing to sell Mata (...) it'll have to be Hazard in, surely.

Yeah Hazard may be better than Mata anyway. i can't get my head around that Mata thing, madness. I'd say I'd love him at United, and although it would probably be madness to turn him down, he plays in Shinji's position.

I can only guess that Mourinho isn't a big fan of central playmakers, perhaps Mata doesn't suit his perennial counterattacking strategy, basically getting the ball in the net with the fewest touches.

Maybe he can't stand Spanish players... even at Real he seemed to be doing his best to keep them out 😆

but the other high scoring midfielders like Michu (could be reclassified as a striker and has Europa), Fellaini (will play deep), Walcott (covered by Higuain), Gerrard (can't rely on at the start) won't be much attractive enough i guess.

Yeah you're bang on on those examples (though I think Walcott will continue to be a heavy hitting midfielder and frankly would bite your hand off for Higuain... call me Luis). There's likely to be new ones just because of the formations played nowadays.

Hello lads. First visit under homecrowd, very impressive I must say. Just over a week until the new fixtures are announced, which should get everyone excited again, this U21 thing has been good, and the fact most of us are kinda flying blind adds to the excitement. But just a quick thing, what are your major hopes for the new season of FPL (excluding MLs and ranks)

Mine are, Miarallas and Ruiz to be classed as mids, Coleman to be classed as a defender, and for the prices of Coutinho and Kagawa to remain around the 7-8 mark. I predict a huge season for Shinji we haven't seen the best of him yet

Lukaku looks like he's staying at Chelsea. i reckon Bent is definitely moving on, the real problem I see is where does he fit in? Clearly none of the top 5 will take him, we can rule out Liverpool. Everton? Possibly, it may depend on Jelly, Fulham, not sure on that, midfield is their weak point. I reckon it's Stoke, West Ham (if they don't get Carroll) or one of the newly promoted teams

I'd also like a few defenders from Liverpool, City, Chelsea and United to come in around 5.5m but that's not going to happen. I also want Zabaleta to still be nailed on as he has so much points potential . In my opinion he underperformed massively last year in terms of goals and assists when he should have got loads.

I know it'll take some time to get used to but my hope is at some point that's the way things will work on here and that the hot topics can continue on even if they were posted pages and pages prior

I didn't downvote but I still disagree with your point. I think the FPL system is smart with its baps as it is based on every aspect of the game. With goals having the highest weighting, it's no surprise he got points, especially as his goals and contribution to games were vital for getting victories or scraping results.

No offence but I think FPL are more qualified for judging baps than you are

Seeing as HC is in it's honeymoon period, a quick question about rep:

Do only +1's earned for posts containing technical content/useful info count towards rep?

Or will my charm, wit, good humour and site morale boosting +1's earn me rep too?

There's potential for Yaya to be freed from his shackles a little more which could boost his appeal, it's also possible Lampard may be in the mix given that Mourinho was always a fan and doesn't let age be a barrier to team selection.

They've spent £8m (I think that much?) on Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. I think all of their funds for new strikers has well and truly been splurged.

Any other money will lie deeper in the field, I would expect.

Pienaar- could be huge under Martinez as Fellaini will certainly play deep if he stays.

The recent comments from Hazard made me take notice... he wants to score 50-60 goals a season like Messi and Ronaldo; pass less, shoot more.

With that attitude, ability and an opening DGW, he's the first man on my team sheet for the new season.

You will probably have to leave out RVP or Bale if you do this. I'm praying Bale moves to United, all our problems will be solved.

I think he'll be the most selected captain in GW1 if Chelsea don't sign a big name striker.

Depends what Mourinho does with him really, If Mourinho sees him as his star player he could be on pens (if Lampard is starting irregularly) and play the no.10 position and generally be the main man. I'm currently thinking Hazard over Mata.

We have an early leader in the Hazard v Mata debate, it seems.

chelsea have a habit of picking up an obscene amount of penalties so the fortunes of lampard could be key to hazard's appeal, not that he wouldn't have an appeal without penalties, simply that with them he could go from great to ....drum roll.... da da da.... essential!

I'm leaning heavily towards Hazard, particularly given inexplicable reports that Mourinho is looking to sell Mata to 'raise cash' (they're short of it? Or actually complying with FFP??)

When will there be an alternative way to pay for membership? Would like to get one for the upcoming season, but I don't have Paypal and I'm not looking to get one just yet. I heard there was looking into this idea i believe?

You can just pay by card if you go through the Paypal link, I think.

Yeah, paypal keep it quiet. You can pay with a debit or credit card without having or signing up for an account.

It asks me for a password to create an account 😯

Guess I'll do it anyway, can't hurt, paypal is probably the safest way to pay for anything

Let's just be glad it doesn't truncate the first part of the username.

"Facer the Physiotherapist" would have a problem.
