Scout Report – Jesus Navas

Manchester City continued to add to their first-team squad yesterday with the acquisition of Jesus Navas from Sevilla. The 27-year-old, who is currently in the US with the Spain squad ahead of this month’s Confederation Cup, is City’s second big-money signing in the past week after Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho arrived at the Etihad from Shakhtar Donetsk:

With Manuel Pellegrini expected to be announced as the new City manager by tomorrow, City’s pre-season plans are beginning to pick up pace following the dismissal of Roberto Mancini towards the end of the previous campaign. In an interview with the club’s official website, Navas – who is believed to have been cost City a fee in the region of £15m – went on to say:

“Manchester City is an exciting project and this is the right moment for me to take this step. I’m very happy with the opportunity and the decision. The Premier League is a competition where the football is very fast and will suit the way I play. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to a great club in England and I want to continue developing my game there. The club has put a lot of faith in me and I want to repay them out on the pitch.”

The History

A product of the Sevilla Youth Academy, Navas joined his hometown club at the age of 15 and made his first-team debut three years later at the end of the 2003-04 season. Firmly established as a regular by 2005-06, the winger has spent a total of 10 campaigns at the La Liga outfit, starting 30 or more times in all but one of the previous five seasons, when injury curtailed his game time over 2009-10.

Navas arrives at City on the back of a less-than-prolific campaign. The winger failed to find the net at all last season and supplied just six assists as Sevilla finished ninth in the table but there’s no doubt his creativity from the flank has been crucial to his side in recent years. In three of the last five seasons, he’s provided 13 or more assists and overall, has chipped in with 24 goals and 62 assists over 276 La Liga appearances.

In terms of silverware, Navas won six major trophies over his time with Sevilla – two UEFA Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, two Spanish Cups and a Spanish Super Cup. He’s also represented his country on 23 occasions, producing two goals and six assists, and has helped his nation to the 2010 World Cup, with the European Championship following a couple of years later.

The Prospects

Navas’ arrival certainly looks likely to afford City an extra dimension on the flanks. While the likes of David Silva, Samir Nasri and James Milner were utilised out wide by Roberto Mancini, none of the trio possess the speed and directness of the new boy – with Fernandinho also bringing a more dynamic edge to central midfield, the former champions seem set for an evolution under the incoming Pellegrini, with a much-needed injection of pace throughout the team.

Both Silva and Nasri may possess the trickery but both had a tendency to move into the middle when on the ball, with City all-too-often lacking any real width. Opponents were able to nullify the danger by packing the middle of the park in Mancini’s final season as his side became a little too predictable in possession – having scored 93 times in their title-winning 2011/12, City found the net just 66 times last term.

Navas’ introduction is clearly part of a tactical plan to utilise the width more efficiently, creating space and stretching opponents’ backlines, which, from a Fantasy perspective, will hopefully be good news after the disappointment of the previous campaign. In terms of Navas as an individual prospect, however, he’ll find it difficult to persuade us to initially invest, given that Silva, Yaya Toure and potentially Nasri will also be vying for our attentions in the City midfield.

Furthermore, his price isn’t likely to be cheap across the Fantasy games, with a cost of 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) anticipated. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all offering explosive potential in the premium bracket, it seems, in all likelihood, there will be better value to be found for our five man midfields as we look to balance budgets.

Ironically, the introduction of Navas and a more expansive style of play could, in turn, bring Sergio Aguero back onto our Fantasy radars. Having started 2012/13 costing 11.5 in FPL, the Argentine could conceivably drop to 10.5 or 11.0, potentially making him a viable option once again for those unwilling to fork out the expected 13.5 for Robin Van Persie. If he can overcome the serious bouts of homesickness that have blighted his international career, Navas has the potential to be a major player for City next term, though whether he can persuade Fantasy managers he’s worthy of a place looks another matter altogether.

      He'll replace Nasri, shirley?

Either that or we could see something like this as a front 6 –

      Yaya – Fernandinho
      Navas – Silva – Nasri
      –––––– Aguero

Can't see Yaya's game-time being affected personally - he and Fernandinho to be the engine with 4 creative players ahead of them. Probably does mean Yaya stays deeper though.

Barry is surely the one whose game-time is restricted.

    Best 2013/14 bargains

With Newcastle reportedly interested in signing Darren Bent the fantasy football community could potentially be presented with a cut price gold mine of points. Following a disastrous 2012/13 at Villa spent mostly on the bench Bent’s price is likely to come with a hefty discount this campaign.

This summer we have been detailing a raft of other so called ‘sleepers’ who had a poor 2012/13 but could bring home the points next season.

So which of those sleepers, already signed or set to move clubs, do you think will be the pick of the bunch?

Here’s our sleeper articles so far for reference http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/?s=Sleeper&x=0&y=0

It's all over the internet but it's coming from the player himself rather than the club:

        http://www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news//tm_headline=darren-bent-keen-on-joining-newcastle-united%26method=full%26objectid=33460682%26siteid=61634-name_page.html

He doesn't fit the profile of players we are in for. Having said that, I'd take him for £5.5m ... will always score goals.

It's funny season where sources are sidelined for tabloid sensationalism.

Bent has already played in the north east and couldn't wait to get away. I know of no truth to these rumours other than it being a viable transfer. Much of it is down to Benteke staying put.

It's just a news hook for a sleepers discussion. I expect him to move to another Prem League club...possibly not Newcastle though. But I guess after spending a year on the bench even the North East would seem palatable to Bent. 😉

Spoke about this in the morning. We have a few sleeper positions that will be in consideration this this year but have been kind of sleeper positions this year. This will make the selection choice tougher as a few stand out options were missing from the realistic pool of options we were considering this season.

      Primarily

      Chelsea Striker
      City Strikers
      Arsenal Striker
      Tottenham Striker
      Everton Striker
Che + City defence (i didn't touch it a lot in the latter half due to rotation, Pellegrini + Mourinho could change things)

Lallana from Southampton had attacking returns in 40% of his games (2 goals, 4 assists in 15 games) before his knee injury.

Was just settling into the league, looked quality at times.

He only managed a single 90 minute performance after his knee injury, adding 1 more goal and assist for the season.

Possibly had a different role under pellegrini. I stand by the notion he was not flying fit after missing 7 games in the middle of the season and with a good pre season could lift his game to a consistent level at a viable price.

Navas, Oscar, Kagawa and Mirallas will play a very important part in our Fantasy lives next year, I reckon.

After all, I expect all of Mata, Hazard, Walcott, Cazorla and Bale to be 10+ next season. Getting them will completely ruin our front 3.

For that matter, if you have to choose one, would you want stronger forwards (RVP, Cavani, Aguero) and mid-price midfielders (Navas, Y Toure, Mirallas) OR mid-price forwards (Sturridge, Giroud, RVW) and as many as premier midfielders?

And don't really think Benteke will be anywhere near mid-price this season. 9 is what I feel the right price for him.

9 is still a mid price , comparing that heavy hitter will cost 12 or more

i just hope that Higuan (if transfer happens) will cost around 10

Was very surprised to see it was just 15m, I think that's a quality signing.

His best season was two seasons ago, where he got 5 goals and 12 assists. Great player, but from a fantasy perspective he may not be one to choose.

I wonder if we will be able to afford him, given the price hikes most of the premium midfielders will have this season.

Coleman, if 5.5, will be very enticing, though.

he didnt have good season in sevilla this year (by his own standards cause he used to deliver much more)

Silva and Aguero is all you need from City atacking coverage

I think Pellgrini will use all of them to be honest. Nasri Silva are both kind of inside forwards, attacking playmakers while Navas is the genuine beat a mean put a cross in kind of winger?

his first half of season form was brilliant, scored v man city, chelsea and arsenal too. 2nd half of the season it was mainly pens and goals v the weaker sides, real madrid was a classic case of man utd needing their main man and him not delivering

Isco will make more of an impact at City than Navas.

It looks as though they will revert to just playing Aguero up top, making him a huge sleeper and firmly on my radar. Hopefully Pellegrini doesn't rest him for CL like Mancini did, I believe that contributed to his lack of form, players need games.

I think he'd be a fool to do it. He obviously now has enough money that a big paycheck alone shouldn't be enough motivation. He's young and needs to get his reputation back on track.

He'd do his career a lot more good by taking Spurs to CL football than by anything he could achieve at PSG because people would always just point to the mega-bucks players he would have at PSG.

I'd love to see him prove himself in the PL.

I doubt it, but 3 or 4 seasons isn't unreasonable.

Just putting myself in his shoes, he won't do himself any favours by leaving Spurs without achieving anything to go somewhere where he won't get much credit for anything he does achieve.

could normally assure you of 3 or 4 goals a season, a decent chunk of bps and a very healthy amount of clean sheets.

Season before this was when he got injured in Basel and missed a whole chunk of it I think? The one prior to that was handy. Owned him twice this season and he picked up injuries both times .. can't see him being nailed on any more... I reckon 13/14 could be the season Jones establishes himself at the heart of MUFC defence.

Don't rule Smalling out. He's the more natural defender of the two.
        Then there is Evans.

Jones looks streets ahead of Smalling to me - not sure I've seen Smalling perform consistently well for 5-6 games on the bounce.

Evans to always be a good premiership defender but never world class in my book.

Smalling is the better defender in my opinion. His style is close to Rio's rolls-royce style of defending. His positioning is better and has always had a decent game imo. Rate him highly. Jones seems streets ahead because he makes those spectacular tackles, which you have to when you are caught a little out of position. I love both.

Jones' height might be an issue though.

What's the issue with Jones' height? (6 ft 2 according to Wiki),

Yeah maybe - Smalling very much style over substance so far for me. Big season coming up for both.

Homecrowd , my thoughts so far:
If I were a stranger visiting this site I would wonder are these a bunch of knobs on here , so serious and so dedicated to soccer, have they not got anything better to do with their lives ?
Im genuinely not trying to be controversial nor do I want to provoke reaction but its Day 2 and I'm starting to feel the site has lost some of it's character , sure maybe some of the 'banter' needed to be curtailed but this is all becoming a bit droll IMO ,
Already the site has become ubber informative on players/teams etc and this might be the ultimate goal for the team , did they feel the site had gone so much off the rails ?
Maybe things will loosen up and i for one hope it does , but I actually feel if I were a stranger looking in - FF Scout is a closed shop and I'm not so sure I'd be that interested in getting involved.
I for one am very selective about what sites/forums I join and participate in and tbh it has been my intention to become a full member here this year as not only do I feel this site should be worth supporting financially it also deserves it thoroughly,
With the greatest respect I hope Fantasy Football Scout doesn't lose it's character.

I understand what you mean, it's nice to have a laugh and go off topic, but I think it's just because HC is new, you see all the posts that are being productive in order to get upvotes. It's a good and bad thing, but it'll dry up soon and once that happens I reckon off-topic banter will be more accepted.

We'll see how it turns out, but two things:
      1. Mods just need to chill a little with their mod triggers, imo.
      2. As there's upvoting, people will fish for upvotes. So off-topic stuff is, mostly, out the window, for the moment at least.

You need to consider that people who were trying to get stickies/up votes yesterday/today are doing so for the novelty of it. Once that wears off and noone really cares if they get a sticky comment or +rep it will return to normal.

And it's quite on here atm so there is less to discuss.

An interesting viewpoint. One of the objectives of HC was to bring informative posts to the fore - I see this as the main remit of the site - to help and inform others. HC appears to have helped that and we have the tools to promote the contributions.

Did we think the site had gone off the rails? Personally, yes, I think the more informative posts were getting lost and some members of the community were staying away or going elsewhere as a result. If I was a Fantasy Football enthusiast, in the main, I'd come here expecting to find content and community discussion on that topic that would help me out or at least chat and banter on football. That's always been about but it was getting lost. HC helps to promote that - I can't see how that can be a bad thing.

I get your point about it being a closed shop, however. A very good point. I hope this doesn't appear to be the case and we're certainly not going to try to present that. I clearly want the site to remain welcoming - the community are very friendly and receptive (unless folk spam RMT's) so I'd hope that newcomers don't feel intimidated. It's something to watch for, though.

Not sure I buy into that 'closed shop' argument. If you're coming to this site you obviously have an interest in fantasy football, so why would you feel alienated if the vast majority of the discussion here was based around fantasy football?

In fact I would feel more closed out if all the best fantasy football talk was drowned out by off-topic/banter/general noise type posts. If HC swings the balance back to more (and better quality) fantasy football talk, then I'm all for it.

There is still a place here for the banter and off topic stuff, but if you feel constrained against posting that stuff then you are probably getting overly concerned about your rep.

if there was a scale with 100% droll at one end and 100% people posting words like poo at the other end the former is clearly more healthy.
my personal taste as a site user would be nearer the middle, but definitely nearer the 'on-topic' side of the scale. a stranger coming onto a fantasy football site surely can't be shocked at seeing people talking seriously about football.

Yeah that can't come as a surprise. You can't jump into a forum and immediately start LOL'ing and OMG'ing at everything. The silly stuff comes later on once you start getting to know others and their behavior on here. And you get to know people on here initially through discussing football, giving your opinions and asking for advice.

My personal opinion is that the increase in football chat is a good thing. I came here due to my interest in fantasy football and because I wanted to improve at it. I would be very surprised if users came for any other reason, even the trolls!

Obviously, since it's a strong community, the conversation often moves away from not only fantasy football but football completely, which I think is fine during the off season since there aren't many pressing matters to do with fantasy football or even football in general.

When the season comes back round, however, I'm personally really looking forward to being able to come to the site and find what I'm looking for easily. Everything I've seen from Homecrowd suggests that it will do that excellently.

If you're cool with that, I'm sure you will see the sunny side of HC as soon as the fixture list is released and the power of HCs tools really become apparent.

I both agree and disagree with you mate.

I agree that we have lost some of the banter and more off topic comments which I really miss. many of these I see get downvoted too. like I attended the U.S. qualifier vs Panama then returned and poster USA USA USA!!! and received 3 down votes for that, seems a bit absurd and frustrating

however I also enjoy the increased productivity and the more interesting pots and discussions along with the fact that these are being brought to the front more.

as many will say though we need a good balance which I think we will find after a couple weeks (or sooner) of HC experience

Personally I avoid in joining in discussions because comments either got disregarded or trolled. This was the nature of the forum I accepted it and still read the articles daily.

I think homecrowd encourages strangers to join in the discussion. I certainly feel more comfortable posting now.

Anyone think the following will not fair well under Mourinho:
    Cahill?
    Mikel?
    Essien?
    Ramirez?
    Torres?
    Ba?
I can see most of those not making the first XI.

Cahill is good - he could always replace terry
      Essien called Mourinho as daddy
torres can play beside cavani 😯
      ba- bench
      ramires, not so sure

Lets rephrase Jonty's question: Who do you think will be a bargain for the 2013/14 season, not necessarily being a sleeper? (Ideally under 7.5mil also). And also who do you think will be the best newbie to the Premier League?

I suppose it's still allowed to answer the post from FLV right here and now?

I apologise for the off topic question but was just wondering if these were good deals.. I live in Dubai but have used current exchange rate. Should I wait until I come to the UK in a few weeks

    Nexus - 16gb - GBP290
    S4 - GBP 382
    Iphone 5 16gb -GBP 454

For the sake of 90 pounds I think the S4 is the one.. Why the feck is Apple so dear...?

    Any advice appreciated...

I just got the Nexus 4 and am really happy with it. Top phone, total value for money.

Nexus 4 cost me about 285 pounds in India.
I don't know if Samsung is worth the extra but Nexus has everything you need. Plus, i just don't like the samsung as much. In particular, the quality of the handset and the touch isn't as smooth.

Hit 15.5 kilos. In the flow. Slowed down a little but not putting on.

Samsung and Apple both great phones still mind you, make sure you get the touch and feel of all 3 because they are different sizes as well.

Where has everyone been getting the idea that Mourinho doesnt like Luiz?

Thinking about it there is only one player in the Chelsea squad who could even begin to try to play the Makelele role from before.
