Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Seamus Coleman

In a season where four of the previous campaign’s top six clubs are set to have a new man in charge, Roberto Martinez’s arrival at Everton is one of the most intriguing appointments in the Premier League this summer. A new formation and style of play is anticipated from the Toffees which could potentially bring a handful of their assets onto our radars – with this in mind, Seamus Coleman is the first subject of our pre-season “Great Expectations” articles.

Under previous manager David Moyes, Everton rarely, if ever, shifted from their default 4-4-1-1 formation but Martinez’s penchant for a three-man defence should boosts Coleman’s prospects considerably. Likely to line up on the right of the midfield four, with Leighton Baines utilised on the opposite flank, the Republic of Ireland international looks a real out of position prospect across the Fantasy games next time out..

Key Factors

  • Classified as a midfielder last term in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Coleman should this time be listed as a defender. His price is likely to remain kind – a cost similar to the previous season’s 5.0, or perhaps a slight increase to 5.5 looks on the cards given the Toffees resilience under Moyes in the final few months of 2012/13. With Baines expected to rise to 7.5, Coleman’s budget-friendly appeal looks set to offer strong value amongst the Everton defence if, as expected, Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 formation.

  • Having fallen down the pecking order in 2011/12, Coleman re-established his position as a first-team regular last time out. His game time was slightly curtailed by hamstring and thigh problems in Moyes’ final term in charge, though with 24 of his 26 appearances coming courtesy of the first XI, he was more or less nailed on as the season unfolded – injury-free, he started each of the Toffees’ last 12 league fixtures in a run that harvested seven clean sheets, three assists and three bonus points.

  • Despite playing as a right-back, he afforded a decent level of creativity down the flank. Coleman supplied five assists over the course of the campaign – only two less than Baines, for example, despite the latter’s set-piece and corner duties, and the same number as Kevin Mirallas for the Toffees. While Baines was the number one defender for assists in FPL, only five other backline options provided more than Coleman, despite the fact he missed 12 of Everton’s league matches – even if Martinez begins with a four-man defence, then, there still looks plenty to be positive about when assessing Coleman’s chances.

  • His previous campaign as a midfielder – back in 2010/11 – highlights Coleman’s capabilities from a more advanced berth. Over 34 appearances, he found the net on four occasions and also supplied four assists, in addition to eight bonus points; with more top-flight experience behind him and license to bomb forward as Martinez looks to entertain, the 24-year-old could be primed for a significant Fantasy season before the inevitable reclassification as a midfield option for 2014/15.

I'm not so confident that the FPL will re-classify him as a defender, or do we have some insider information, Paul?

Even if he isn't - I'd like to think he'll be priced lower than Fellaini/Osman and therefore an even more decent option if old Roberto goes with a 3-4-3.

He played there pretty much all the time after Phil Neville was put out to pasture and with Tony Hibbert injured, I think he's played himself into the position.

I can see Coleman as being a very good alternative to Baines, and is a solid way of getting into Martinez's back four. Definitely on my radar.

Coleman as a defender would be great....but he'd have to be pretty cheap for me to ignore Baines. If Martinez plays wingbacks and has a striker who can score then Baines could mop up.

The top managers in FPL last season very rarely took a points hit.

How many points hits did you take last season and will you curb your transfer instincts next season?

Any anecdotes of points hits that paid off? Or points hits that failed spectacularly?

I had 2 or 3 key players injured every week from around GW18 - GW22 so I had to take hits and they paid off!

I took 3 hits before GW26 and then 10 in the final 13 GWs as the DGWs piled up - hoping to keep my wildcard for that next season!

      In GW31 I did RVP & Kebe --> Berbatov & Cazorla for -4 points. 7 & 0 --> 13 * 12 paid off initially but then RVP punished me bad.

The best points hit I ever took was a couple of seasons ago when after gameweek it became clear Drogba and Malouda were going to be sensational. Swapped Lampard and Rooney out for a hit, captained Drogba and got Malouda in and spent the next two months with lovely green arrows.

2010/2011 seasonm that was.. I remember it well, as I kept holding off on Malouda. It's tricky striking the balance between knee-jerking and getting the key players in.

This season for example, a lot of people went Mata --> Hazard after GW1 or 2 and then Mata started earning big points while Hazard fell away a little.

It was odd, my normal free transfers all failed abysmally, but when forced to take hits they succeeded spectacularly.

When I eventually sold Kolarov for a hit, it was to afford Walcott to captain his hattrick that week. So for me hits work out, but only when my hand was forced by injuries.

I took loads of points hits last year and ended up with my best rank ever.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a conservative FPL player and whenever I don't make a move or just make the one transfer, I end up having a crap week.

So make of that what you will.

I believe that everyone has a particular style that suits them best, and they should always play the game to their strengths. Each year a different recipe is required to win, so one year your methodology will come out on top and you have to make sure your there to take the price.

This was the year of the conservatives, but last season was for bandwagoners.

Many did, many didn't. I had a rash of injuries/red cards on them, and THIS is where one is vulnerable on hits.

Those who don't take them are probably slightly better off on the odds.

      19 point hits.

Did fairly well. If i had to tell you about them, about 75% of them worked and these were the ones in the first 25 GW's, I started getting careless in the last 4 gw's and took -24 in the last 4 gw's. Cost me a top 100 finish this recklessness i reckon.

I remember taking one in particular. I was early on Suarez and Walcott relative to the rest of FFS and i got rid of two marquee players Tevez and Cazorla and they will doing fairly well but i personally wasn't convinced about them, watching the games. I missed out on Santi's freak hat-trick vs Reading but overall gained on this hit by quite a lot.

So in all, if you're hits are for big players who might stay in you're team for a long time, i am one to encourage them. So avoid short term punts for smallish players when it comes to hits and defenders. That is my policy i reckon.

When it comes to the big players, you don't want to miss a possible 20pt haul. If it is for such a marquee player, take the plunge.

The thing is you can't know they will score higher. If you simulated the matches a thousand times I'd guarantee the player you brought in would not score 4pts more on average than the player you ditched. You have to play the odds and not let hunches cloud your judgement imo. I'm going to be playing the game very differently next year.

Of course luck has an element to it, but then the same could be said that the players I have in my squad could do naff all as well.

I guess I would rather take the risk and fail, then not do it and that player does well.

Adebayor against Sunderland on the last day as a prime example.

I have always been an advocate of taking hits in FPL, of course it is a risk, but it is a calculated risk. I have always had the same policy, often making over 60 transfers a season, last season was the first season that it didn't really pay off, I like to think that there was a large element of bad luck involved with that! 🙂

The other important point is that taking hits makes the game a lot more fun, the idea of been ahead of the game in bringing in form players and jettisoning dead-wood first is a real benefit.

I think the key is to be restrained and weigh up, pessimistically, the benefits of taking a hit. Hits can work, I took a 12 point hit in GW36 and got a green arrow with 96 points.

I think it all comes down to playstyle.

Are you the type of player that sticks with consistent players and tries not to make too many changes for the sake of it?

Or are you the kind of player that likes to try to maximise the amount of points to be gained by making a lot of transfers and getting form players early and selling as soon as signs of a loss of form are there to be seen?

If you're the latter, you're bound to end up taking more hits as you will have more punts and therefore probably more transfers you want to make on a weekly basis.

I'd argue a playstyle somewhere in the middle is the best bet. Obviously you can get more points my intelligently changing players at the right time, but you could have also done incredibly well last season simply by picking the right 15 players and making 0 transfers.

I personally have a more conservative approach and tend to be more patient. It worked well last season (top 5k) and I only took two hits. One was a knee-jerk in GW3 that failed (brought Adebayor and Kagawa in) and one paid off nicely for a DGW. I only regret not taking a hit once, and that would have involved selling Berbatov and Fellaini before a baron spell and buying Walcott before a double.

I think the simple answer is: there is no 'rule'.

Simply do a cost/benifit analysis and work out the likelihood of it working out.

Obviously there are factors that increase the likelihood of the benifit outweighing the cost, such as struggling to field enough players (especially attackers) or a DGW/blank. However, the same principal still applies.

The closest thing to a rule i've come up is

        a) Avoid hits for short term punts/cheap form players.
        b) Take hits for 'big' players who are capable of big hauls
        c) Take hits for DGWers
        d) Avoid hits for defenders
        e) Take hits to field and xi

The lines between a and b is blurred though. Usually a hit involves both a cheap and a big hitter. The assumption that you can isolate a hit to a single transfer is ridiculous as it always involves two players.

Personally I go with this, assume every transfer you ever make would cost you 4pts, and thus you will use your free transfers more wisely too.

I found that most of my hits payed off, notably the majority of my dgw hits (same for most people) and my hits to get in bale and walcott for their hattricks. I think if it's a well thought out hit it can often work out quite well, especially if you are looking at both the current gw and longer term

my one hit that failed spectacularly was Lukaku out for Adebayor on the final day. on paper it looked a good one with Lukaku possibly benched (which he was) and spurs having a seemingly easy game where they needed a win. however we all know what happened there :(.

I took 2x -8s and 2x -12s this season all in double gameweeks and all ended up with green arrows so I wouldn't hesitate taking them in DGWs again to get the premium player of each team. I think the fact a few of the DGWs were at such short notice it made me take the risk, hopefully there will be more time to plan ahead next season. The best part was clearing the deadwood from my team which helped in the weeks afterwards. -4s on single gameweeks weren't as successful so might make a general rule of -4 for injuries only next season.

I spent 84 points on hits last season with varying degrees of success - I think I'll take around the same amount of hits or more next season. When my season wasn't going to plan I was liberated by this and started to get a bit fast and loose with the transfers, it was more fun and for the most part I benefited from these hits more so than suffering.

I only ever take about five each season, some work some don't...but I agree that the fun of taking hits is something that can't be denied. I'd say 84 pts worth of hits is a tad on the too much side in terms of winning the thing....but in terms of fun its just about right.

I did 72 points myself, and ended up in place 5k-something after a horrible last round (slipped down from 3k).
I wanted to take much less hits, but when the team felt just wrong around GW 6-7, and I had already played the wildcard, I started some heavy hitting.

I feel that an early wildcard is a must if your team isn't great right out of the box. Players shining pre-season you loaded your team up with might look out of shape come matchday one. Not only might, but it seems to be a general rule here. Maybe some of you guys even made a color coded spreadsheet that gives an output indicating the percentage chance for a player that has played so and so successful preseason will get a flying start.

Early wildcard will helps you to catch the cheap form players, and you can kick back and watch your team value skyrocket. I think however it also will lead to more hits the first half of the season, as your team is bound to need some surgery sometime.

Another thing is that I wasn't patient enough on the big players this season. It feels like I have bought and sold Bale 5 or 6 times. A player worth 10 and giving you 2s GW after GW is not easy to keep in the team, but I should have known he would be gold eventually. I also did a RVP to Rooney move, only to do Rooney to RVP again some GWs later. Not worth it at all, even if I got some few points from it. Those transfers should have been used for more pressing matters.

Next season I will try to cut down my points spending to half of what I did now. Somewhere in the 30s or 40s will do.
To do this I plan to do more research preseason and try to put my team together in a most brilliant way to avoid the early wild card, and secondly be more patient. I am sure you top100 guys don't buy and sell Bale 6 times during the season.

I decided for a minimum-hits policy the last season. The only occasions I took hits, was when I was facing a GW with less than 11 starters, or when I recognized good prospects for a DGW.

      I took 6 hits:
GW21 JEnrique (inj) → Luiz to field 11 - paid off by GW22
      GW23 Luiz (out) + Cullear (inj) → Gibbs+Sagna - paid off immediately
      GW29 Mata (no gw) + Pog (out) → Sissoko+Suarez to field 11 - 13pts surplus right away
GW36 (-8pts) Fellaini Lambert → Lampard Kone for the DGW - broke even right away
GW37 Turner → Carragher - paid off when Carra got a GW38 clean sheet (and hit the post from the half-way line).

In retrospect the hits taken was sensible and with a high chance of breaking even right away. It must be said though, that the hits with large exceptions did not help me get a much bigger score either. But what they did was helping me offload injured players, thus probably boosting my point tallies for the next 3-4 GWs.

I will continue with this policy for next season.

Time to play devils advocate: I'm not sure being a wing back helps Coleman or Baines' prospects too much. They lose a partner on the wing to work with and overlap, no more Baines/Pienaar combo. And Boyce and Beausejour were hardly strong FPL prospects.

The key will be what impact it has on clean sheets, since this is where the bulk of defenders' points come from. If Martinez can get the right players at centreback to retain some defensive solidity, then I still think Baines and Coleman as wingbacks would be an attractive proposition.

However, it's very possible that he doesn't stick to the formation he used at Wigan. He said the wingback formation was one he used to get the best out of the players he had available to him, in other words it was forced on him by budget and player limitations. One would think those limitations would be less of a factor at Everton.

Since everyone's gone all serious now , I'd like to add a point for discussion.

Haven't got the link but a while back AB posted the ppi weighting he'd worked for the baps - it gave +18ppi for a goal. The next highest allocation was something like +6ppi (an assist or peno save or something like that).

For me this is one of the biggest problems with baps. The weighting for a goal seems far too high. If it was reduced to say +10ppi then I reckon we might see a better distribution/allocation of baps?

That and the fact DM don't get recognised......

That's the one cheers 3rd....Opta might (will) be more accurate in terms of events (assists etc) but is it not FPL who decide on ppi ratings and therefore it's possible they'll remain the same?

Are you the guy that does the smart charts & graph? Can never remember?

Yes, I suppose PPI is just an algorithm into which stats get fed to produce an end result. Just because the raw stats are changing from one source to another does not necessarily mean the PPI system will get junked, but I'd be surprised if Opta don't have their own equivalent to the PPI.

And yes, I've been known to post one or two charts in the past 😉

Yeah hope so, really like to see that 18pts reduced and perhaps others increased.

Great work on the charts & graphs, mega useful/interesting......I find looking at tables tedious........more this season coming?

Hopefully. I definitely agree charts are so much better than looking at raw tables of data.

Problem is that although you can create tables from the Opta stats and share them with other members behind the paywall, I can't do that with my graphs. Some of the ones I've previously posted use stats from the members area, the publishing of which is now specifically banned under the new rules.

I can stick to charting the FPL stats, but it's a lot less insightful if you can't merge the FPL and Opta stats into the same chart.

Possibly, but I doubt if they would want articles full of stattery, and it would need to be padded out into a full article to make it worth posting.

I think the actions that are already rewarded with points, e.g. goals, should be taken out of the equation for ppi/baps.

In a game where there was only one shot, the goal still deserves 3 baps, but I agree that they should be severly reduced in influence in the Bap calcs.

I can see Newcastle having a few tempting fantasy football prospects this year. They clearly under achieved last season with the demands of the Europa league and hopefully their players will be underpriced as a result.

On the flip side I think Swansea players will be a no go as they over achieved last season and will have Thursday night football to contend with.

Facer or any other medic around? Its about Parker injury:

" Parker had an MRI on Wednesday that revealed a Grade 1 strain of his hamstring, the mildest level of strain. He's listed as day to day.

"I was just hoping it was not a tear," Parker said. "The good news is it's not a tear or a defect. So that's the good news. Now I just have to see how I feel tomorrow.""

From as I remember tear means 2 weeks at least, well in football at least no. How come he could be ready after couple of days? What is the different between football and basketball players ? Do football players need to heal more or they are more weak? Maybe the game needs more effort? I think its good to know and to have some kind of a table in order to predict transfers in the future.

In example: tear = 2 weeks = sell...
    Cheers,

It will depend on various things, players depending on age and physique will differ in recovery times. You'll find that in the same way some players only get a little injury but because they are a more stocky build it takes them longer to get sharp than a leaner player, it just seems to be a physique issue.

If you change your grav on gratar and then change it back immediately it should work. It should resubmit it.

Had same problem worked for me, not easy to find where to foind change rating option but keep looking and you'll find it 🙂

More focused on Baines but the general idea can also be applied to Coleman.

Many of us are excited about Martinez being appointed as Everton manager and the prospect of Baines and Coleman as a wingbacks. but in fact this may not be what we want.

this article breaks down the result of Everton playing such a system last season against stoke and it's tactical effects: http://theexecutionersbong.wordpress.com/2013/03/31/tactical-analysis-the-everton-back-3-experiment/

as you can see, a significant decrease in the number of crosses from 44 the previous time they played stoke (using their normal formation) to 20 with Baines and Coleman as wing backs.

this makes sense because baines as a wing back won't have an outside mid to combine with and overlap as he'll be the sole source of width on his side. Baines partnership with Pienaar is very important to the wya he plays and is a key reason as to why he's able to attack so much and so effectively. without Pienaar to link up with and overlap, his attacking won't be as effective as he'll be isolated 1v1 on the wing more often. not to mention that Pienaar often provides some cover for him but if he is a wingback he won't have that cover so may need to be more cautious

yes this is only one game but the way I see it, perhaps we're better off (fantasy wise) if Everton remain playing a 4411. A bit ironic that a more advanced position might hinder the fantasy output of Baines (and Coleman)

tldr, rep whoring so early in the day should be outlawed besides shouldn't you be rolling around your bed wearing Messi's jersey while touching yourself in appropriate places?

but now that I've read it, it's a great post! but I don't necessarily agree, Cafa Coleman will be a beast this year although I have a feeling he might end up as back up to Rafael at Man U.

seriously united have far too many options at RB, they don't need another! especially considering they just signed that new guy too in addition to rafa, jones, smalling, and even valencia

Jones Smalling and Valencia are not RB options, they are long term CB's that are versatile for the odd occasion. Is the new guy defo a RB? Haven't looked into it at all.

I haven't looked into it at all either but i've heard he's a RB. if that's the case one true RB cover plus 3 others who CAN play that position if need be are plenty enough imo. not worth it to splash the cash on Coleman in that case

Baines has prospered without Pienaar, and Coleman has done well enough in the midfield. That game against Stoke is ONE game ...

Baines has prospered without Pienaar but he still had someone at left mid to combine with and overlap. as a wingback he'll be the sole one providing width and won't have anyone out wide to combine with.

and yes coleman has done well in the midfield but again he would have been working together with a right back but in this case it's only him.

I agree that it's only one game but the fact that their crosses from the width decreased by over 50 percent is pretty telling.

valid counter arguments though, the most valid of which is the fact that we only have one data point so far

Reports that Sunderland have held talks to sign St Etienne defensive midfielder Joshua Guilavogui.

Di Canio is starting some revolution to his squad especially at the back, I think I'll considering their defences next season.
