634x258 Great Expectations

After the first nine Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Andreas Weimann cut a peripheral figure for Aston Villa. Having started just five times under Alex McLeish in 2011/12, the young Austrian looked to have assumed the role of bench-warmer once again – with two starts and no goals to his name as November arrived, Paul Lambert’s continual first-team tinkering proved severely detrimental to his game time.

As the season unfolded, however, Weimann’s prospects improved in leaps and bounds. While Christian Benteke hogged the headlines with a series of barnstorming displays in his debut season at Villa Park, Weimann’s contribution up top was also crucial over the final few months. Ending the 2012/13 campaign with seven goals, four assists and 13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, Weimann registered 105 points over 26 starts to suggest he may be ready to offer us a genuine, budget-friendly alternative for our three man forward lines next time out.

Key Factors

  • Similar to our previous Great Expectations article on Villa right-back Matt Lowton, an increased tactical consistency should help Weimann’s prospects. Lambert’s tinkering meant the Austrian was utilised in a variety of positions last time round – although fielded on the left, through the middle and in β€œthe hole”, he finally looks to have nailed down a front right role in a 4-3-3, with Gabby Agbonlahor on the opposite flank and Benteke through the middle.

  • As the battle for relegation heated up, Weimann became a key member of Villa’s first XI. He started just 12 of Villa’s first 24 league fixtures, with a further four appearances off the bench, but from Gameweek 25 onwards he started every one of his side’s matches – given that Villa ended the campaign with five wins and two draws from their last 10 games, their improving form indicates Lambert’s side was finally starting to gel as the season came to a close.

  • Weimann’s eye for goal highlights his capabilities against some of the more established sides. The youngster bagged a brace against United and also notched against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, racking up three sets of double figures last time round. Indeed, his crucial presence in the first XI is highlighted by Villa’s attacking output – they scored 39 goals in the 26 games he started (1.5 goals per game) compared to eight strikes in the 12 games (0.66 goals per game) without Weimann in the starting line-up.

  • While Benteke’s 19 goals, four assists and total of 166 FPL points made a mockery of his initial 6.5 starting price last term, the Belgian is primed for a significant price hike which could well knock him off many radars. A cost of 8.5 to 9.5 for Benteke looks realistic and with Agbonlahor also finishing the season strongly, his value is likely to be frozen across the Fantasy games, with a possible increase to 7.5 in the FPL on the cards. Weimann should remain the budget option for Lambert’s forwards, then – a cost around 5.5 to 6.0 in FPL could well prove a bargain as he looks to push on from last term’s first-team breakthrough.

Sorry, I thought you meant next season.

You could try emailing them for the info, I doubt it will be on site. I wouldn't hold your breath that they give it to you.
Although as a comparison site it would be no skin off their nose, unlike if they were a bookie.
Give it a whirl. I'm a great believer in firing off emails and results are often better than you think.

well he suffered from a heart attack shortly after that, so he left due to his health.

if you haven't heard his talksport interview tonight, he calls Yohan Cabaye 'Yohan Kebab', as well as mispronouncing pretty much every other player.

With Bale and RVP taking up +- £25.0 mil for those wanting both of them, along with a budget defense and rotating keepers, I think finding the top mid-priced players for the rest of the front 8 is going to be more crucial than ever!

How's this for a template XV?

    Vorm 5.0 Marshall 4.5
    Skrtel 6.0 Coleman 5.5 Wilson 5.0 Clyne 4.5 Chester 4.0
    Bale 12.0 Mirallas 7.0 Sessegnon 7.0 Walters 6.5 Noble 5.0
    RVP 13.0 Berbatov 8.0 Fletcher 7.0

Obviously with an infinite number of ifs and buts, but this is what I've come up with. πŸ˜€

Lowest odds of Skrtel's new club is 5/2 for a move to Napoli, followed by 9/2 to Zenit. I wouldn't say anything's too concrete about a move away.
          http://www.skybet.com/football/transfer-specials/event/14921345

And as I mentioned below, just my thoughts, but I could see the same back 4 as last year with Skrtel replacing Carragher in the starting 11 and Kolo Toure taking up a squad role to fill the Carragher void.

I see Liverpool spending their cash further up the pitch on Sigurdsson/Mkhitaryan/etc. apart from Mignolet perhaps replacing Reina, along with Iago Aspas.

Look more at the prices than the players. The players are there just to give a vague idea.

If Skrtel stays at Liverpool, he should be the cheapest option into the Liverpool defense. With Kolo Toure filling the Carragher void and Skrtel partnering up with Agger in the starting 11. I can foresee Agger, Enrique and Johnson all possibly priced at 6.5.

I can't see any City defenders priced at 6.0, besides perhaps Nastasic/Lescott, but you never know which way Pellegrini will go. Kompany at 7.0, and possibly Zaba too, Clichy at 6.5.

Chelsea's the same story as City, I can only see Cahill and Azpilicueta at 6.0, and they're not guaranteed to start under Mourinho.

Ferdinand could be an option at 6.0, if Moyes decides to rotate less than Ferguson.

As I said, tons of ifs and buts, but just wanted to express some of my initial thoughts and a healthy debate started. πŸ™‚

If Chelsea start with a DGW as expected, I think many could start their season without Bale and RVP, and instead with Mata, Hazard & Cavani/whoever they buy, and then shifting to RVP and Bale when Chelsea have a blank 2 or 3 weeks later.

Get him scanned to see if he has an I.D. chip. Save you heartache later if an owner shows up and can prove ownership.
A few calls to Police, RSPCA and The Dog's Trust will tell if he's been reported missing.

i've asked around and posted news on the local radio. will give it some time and don't really have any intention of keeping him but he's gunna be well taken care of while he chooses to squat on my soul. dammit tho he's a cute dog. if no owner comes forth i'll do my darndest to find him a good home. i live 15 feet from the main road so he can't stay here. even if he does come across as a canny operator. in any case, i'm way too much of an alcoholic pothead to be allowed the care of a living being. also, i'm an asshole. even if sometimes i hide it well. πŸ˜€

I see them to struggling to make the playoffs tbh. Although I don't overly like Coyle, I did like his style of play at Bolton and thought he was unlucky that his 2 star players- Lee and Holden- got injured for 12 months and that he lost strikers like Studge and Elmander-when he was just hitting form. Made some strange purchases though.

Wayne Rooney is basically on his way out, to where I don't care. However I do care about is Javier Hernandez, I really do hope they give old Javier more regular time on the pitch rather than using him has a mere impact sub.
He could be a cheeky one if he is still around the £8 million mark, 10 goals, 5 assist and only from 953 minutes on the pitch, mostly sub appearances. On average a goal every 95.3 minutes or an assist every 190.6 minutes.
When you compare this to RVP 26 goals, 15 assist from 3123 minutes on the pitch. On average a goal every 120.15 minutes and an assist every 208.2 minutes.
If Javier was give the game time that RVP is being give and kept his consistency we would be looking at him getting 33 goals, 16 assist.... all in all I hope he is more nailed on this season, otherwise I am calling utter bollox!

this is sort of the point he's making though isn't it. if Chica was starting every week you wouldn't need RvP.

It has, since when Javier its on the pitch he is eating minutes and yards from RVP.

Where Javier has scored more than 2 points in 8 out of his 22 appearances he made, and he only made 8 appearances which had him on the pitches for 65 minutes or more.

Wigan 4-0, played 90 minutes, scored 1, assist 1, baps 2 (No RVP)
            Chelsea 2-3, played 26 minutes, scored 1 (RVP 90 minutes, 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 baps)
            Villa 3-2, played 45 minutes, scored 2, assist 1, baps 3 (RVP 90 minutes, 1 assist)
QPR 3-1, played 32 minutes, scored 1 (RVP 90 minutes nothing)
            Newcastle, 4-3 played 90 minutes, scored 1, assist 1, baps 2 (RVP 90 minutes, scored 1, assist 1)
            Wigan 4-0, played 90 minutes, scored 2, assist 1, baps 2 (RVP 90 minutes, scored 2, assist 1, baps 3)
            Swansea 2-1, played 75 minutes, scored 1 (RVP 90 minutes, 2 assist, 2 baps)
            WBA 5-5, played 90, scored 1, assist 1 (RVP 90 minutes, 1 goal)

Javier can play with and without RVP from the looks of it, but read it how you will.

Actually he already proved he can play with everyone from the United attack over the last 3 seasons.

I am just saying that RVP will get hurt if does grab a place on the first 11.

Good work there on the apps from Chicharo!

Are you saying that you would prefer Javier to RVP if he nails a starting job?

I don't really mind, I've only had RVP less than a dozen times over the past 2 seasons, he is too expensive (going to get more expensive) and I find I can invest the money else where. I was right on the money for Suarez, Lambert and Lukaku for most of the season.
And if Javier takes more time off RVP this season it can only be beneficial for people like me who omitted him from their squads.
And yea, if he is nailed on with a price tag of around £8 compared to the £14+ or whatever RVP will end up being, silly money!
I will be looking at a Hernandez / Sturridge / Lukaku (or Torres if he finds form again under Jose), but I am waiting on pre season friendlies regardless.

                  I see.
You are trying to form a trio of "prone subs".

Well Zé, in Portugal its the nick name for Jose, loves a stand out striker. Strong and someone who can hold of the ball when palying a more direct style.

Benni Macarthy, Derlei, Drogba, Eto'o/Milito, Ade/Benzema.

So Lukaku could play a part....

But Daniel would only be a god if Luis goes to Madrid.

Doing CCFF scoring, gents. I'm trying to be impartial, so I'll ask the field. Do the own goal and the 26' minute goal warrant an assist, following these rules:

"A player will be credited with a 'goal assist' when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.). In addition, An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal. When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker. Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored. No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick. No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble)."

Ideally, I'd like someone NOT in the minileague to have a look at this, but either way, it's up for discussion. Thanks! πŸ™‚

Arsenal really need a strong striker option. I'd still be hesitant about getting Higuain in from GW1 though. Wenger might stick with the donkey for a bit longer. This could be dependant on how pre-season goes.

He has a very good scoring record ,should have no problem scoring at least 20 probably more. i fear another club will snatch him away. If he does arrive might be fairly high priced on fpl 11m?

Over the course of the season I agree, he will be a valuable FF asset. However I have reservations he will start for Arsenal straight away. My GW1 team will be as safe as possible, I wouldn't want any doubts about their starting position for that opening week.

It looks like Andy Caroll will be heading to West Ham. Could we see a price drop making him a more viable fantasy asset?

He will be 7.0-7.5. Still too expensive for my liking.

      I'd rather Van Wolfswinkel.

Nah I say 6.0-6.5. Similar to Lambert\s starting price last season.

Hmm, Norwich are now an established team in the PL. Southampton were new last year. I have to say I must disagree with your estimate. I'd say the Wolf will be around 7m and Caroll maybe 0.5 more. It could be 7m vs 6.5m perhaps as well.

Not at all, certainly if you don't consider pricing someone as 6.0-6.5 as a contradiction. perhaps I could have said it better so for you Willis I will rephrase.

                        Carroll 7.0-7.5m

Liverpool have said that Suarez needs to hand in a transfer request if he wants to leave.

Hopefully this will be sorted out sooner, rather than later.

Terrible behavior from that man. As much as the media mit blow these things up it appears he is saying something every day.

And talking to Marca is effectively handing in a transfer request.

Not quite the same as actually handing in a request though.

If they hand in a request they lose a large slice of the transfer money. That is why so many agents try to get their tame idiot to maneuver for it.
