The Community Round-Up

Welcome to the first of our weekly community round-up articles which will pick out some of the best activity and hot topics generated by the Fantasy Football Scout community over the previous seven days. We will also cover the community leagues and tournaments that are taking place throughout the season. Those running community tournaments are urged to email me ahead of the new season at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk for inclusion in forthcoming community round-up articles.

Hottest Topics

The launch of HomeCrowd last week introduced the concept of ‘hot topics’ and ‘stickies’, a new way for the community to locate some of most interesting posts and discussions taking place. The current list of hot topics can be found in the widget in the right sidebar, whilst stickies in any article can be found by simply using the “sticky comments first” setting in the “sort comments by” dropdown below each article.

In our first week, we’ve already seen a good number of hot topics from the community, covering a wide range of fantasy football issues.

Statistics have been the focus for many, with the community keen to turn to their abacuses and spreadsheets months before the new numbers come our way. Amongst the pick of our hot topics is 3rd Turd’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Stats Home and Away Analysis which is broken down to bonus points, goals, assists, points per game, FPL points and minutes. An incredible achievement and deserving of a hottest topic gong.

Some age-old discussions about Fantasy games have also been given an airing. Mathmo has popped down to his lab to attempt to decipher just how much the game is down to luck or skill. His analysis based on the performance of so called ghosts teams was particularly impressive.

The form versus fixtures debate is one Al Pacino and his calculator has been getting to grips with. Read his analysis based on some of the FPL game’s biggest players here.

Elsewhere this week RoysCallerAnne also started whetting our appetite for the forthcoming fixture list announcement with a look at rotation and whether it’s actually overrated.

The community has also been able to go the extra mile with their in depth analysis of new managers and players coming to the Premier League for 2013/14. Dino’s look at Manuel Pellegrini’s track record was an eye-poppingly detailed analysis of City’s new boss.

Over the week we’ve also been putting out our own daily hot topics, asking for your views on a range of topics including cult players as well as hearing about your greatest fantasy football achievements. We’ve really enjoyed reading your responses.

Community Leagues

Community group FFS UEFA haven’t been resting on their laurels during the close season and have spent the time devising an intriguing transfer window simulation game, which involves 128 community members who are organised along Premier League team names. After the first round Cardiff have the honour of acquiring the highest valued goalkeeper Iker Casillas. For those looking to join the game the sign up details can be found here.

HomeCrowd Updates

A number of our overseas community members requested we tweak the time updates on the site. We listened and we acted. From today, community members can now go into their profile section and under “comment settings” they can find a choice of timezone to select. You can also now choose to see the time of a comment’s posting rather than how long ago it was posted – another popular recent request.

Feel free to keep the feedback, suggestions and community news coming my way via email at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

There is an argument that we are all born equal.

Our experiences determine who we are.

Humans are just responsive to their surroundings.

Give a woman chocolate, she becomes less annoying 🙂

Give a man some beer, he acts drunk.

          Nature, nurture debate.

I learned about this in A level psychology.

I concluded it was 80% nurture, 20% nature.

Fancy explaining your reasoning? Most of the studies I saw at GCSE didnt properly explore nature of their subjects and just showed that nurture can have a massive effect.

              Its quite simple really.

              Humans learn by seeing.

              Human behaviour is depressingly predictable.

More often than not behaviour is reactive.

It begins with the thought process.

Media & advertising exploit this massively.

Take fashion, for example, people want what they are told they should want.

The majority of things are learned from experience, but nature plays some part in shaping who we are.

Couldnt you suggest that we are all more or less pre disposed to reacte to our environment and thus it cannot be qualified as a single answer to the nature/nurture debate?

I was waiting for your reply before asking. You always see Aspergers and other forms of Autism in documentaries and other media relating to child sufferers only. Do you know why? There doesn't seem to much attention on adult sufferers. I didn't so much think the condition no longer existed in older people just maybe that symptoms lessened over time or became much more manageable.

Some of these kids are absolute freaks. That Hugo is a right pain in the arse and his mother lets him talk to her how he wants.

My son is absolutely obsessed with numbers and letters. He's been able to count to 100 since he was 2 and a half. They've put him in the 4-5 year bracket in maths. Other areas he is behind, such as speech. They say, by the time kids are 5 they pretty much all catch up.

Haha he is a nightmare. Leo is another strange character. He sounds like he would rather reenact the LOTR Trilogy than remember a deck of cards. Very pushy parents though. You can see some of them getting restless and questioning why they are even there.

That's good you have a smart one on your hands. I think when they start interacting more with other kids and their environment they begin to communicate alot better.

With my son it's both nurture and nature. When he was tiny I used to entertain him by counting to 10 on my fingers. It's definitely rubbed off. He's like 'count' off Sesame St, everything he sees is an opportunity to count 🙂

Depends what you want to do. If your going to take out (for example) an 8.5 mid and replace him with an 8, then it isn't necessary so you can spend as much as you need to on your original team. But I know what you mean I always like to keep 0.5 left over just in case.

I think its a case of being aware of the players you might want. There is no real point keeping money safe in the bank if you already own RVP etc and the only real alternatives are all downgrades. Assuming you will have written at least 50 RMT's by the season kick off, you should have a good idea which players you might want.

The thing that really annoys me is all the useless speculation over the summer (I'll say this at least 20 times more over the next few weeks). The only thing worth considering before we know who is actually playing for who is the rotation possibilities. Anything else is a waste of time and energy.

Aaaah... I feel better already 🙂

What was everyone's most fruitful transfer last season (hits included)?

I'll kick us off: I bought in Figueroa the gameweek he played Reading away and he got me a goal, an assist, a clean sheet and 2 bonus. I didn't play him again after that.

Random comment--I feel it's sort of elitist to have a numerical system so prominent next to names. Should all 1s desperately aspire to 2dom, or the rarefied heights of 3 and beyond?

I'm not trying to say it's a rigid caste system, but before the numbers, things seemed more egalitarian and inclusive.

For me and probably some others, the numbers mean absolutely nothing, if I move up a level then cool, but it really doesn't bother me. A number next to someone's name isn't going to make me more likely to listen to them, if what the person posts is good then I will pay attention no matter what the number is

Stitching it together from knowledge of other languages, it's a speculative piece about how one French newspaper "La Voix des Sports" is reporting that Thorgan Hazard might be moving to Anderlecht for €1.5 million, although "negotiations are at an early stage".

In other words, it fills a space during the summer lull.

Nadal missed that French Open with injury. Federer game is more suited to the faster surfaces, but if it wasn't for Nadal he might have won another couple.

In fact, Hector Castro was missing an arm.

When he was 13, he accidentally amputated his right-forearm while using an electric saw, which gave origin to his nickname, El manco ("the one-armed", or "the maimed")

At least the last time the site went through significant redesign that was the case....or was it the time before that....or the time before that...?

Spurs have missed the boat for top 4 and I'll tell you why...
They've failed to establish themselves in the CL since getting it in 09/10 season.

Prior to this season Harry got to see what he needed to improve his team and naturally he was always going to make them a better team than under Ramos a yr later.

They managed to get Top 4 this season and replaced pretty much Liverpool who failed to strengthen their team because of the former owners starting to destroy the club. Rafa had his faults but not to that extent. City also sacked Hughes and got Mancini who actually almost got them in the top 4 infact if hired earlier they probably would have finished 4th.

10/11 season they missed out by 6pts with liverpool 3pts behind and City replacing Spurs in the top 4 by making all those class signings that yr.

11/12 Spurs managed to get into top 4 again only because Roman threw his toys out of his pram that season. Newscastle finished 5th which was a surprise.

and now to last season they missed out by 1pt to their massive rival the arsenal. This is going to haunt them the most because if they managed to get in last season they would have been able to attract better players with CL football and it would have been the first time they managed to get there 2 yrs running. Why is this a problem well I'll tell you why.

Arsenal all these seasons managed to stay in the top 4 while not spending much on players and paying off their new stadium. They now have the money available to be able to buy better players. Do I believe theyre going to spend that rumoured 70mil well no I dont but this season will be the first where they actually may break the 20mil barrier on a signing thats unheard of for them to date.

Now this brings me to Liverpool, 2/3 of these seasons they had problems with their previous owners and coaching appointments. Former owners almost destroyed this club and before Rodgers appointment they had Hodgson who is so poor as a coach the national side is feeling his wrath now while plenty were having a go at pool supporters about them not giving him a chance.Kenny also delayed them for a season just because he was so outdated to modern football.
They were in no place to compete during this time. But Rodgers now has implemented his style on the team and they managed to get 61pts last season with only 1 striker for half of the season, playing youth teamers 1st half of the season (none of the top 6 had to do this), buying Sturr/Cou and helping them get 36pts for the 2nd half of the season. Comparing the other teams Man utd got 43, Arsenal 40,City/Chelsea/Spurs all got 39 pts thats only 1 win away. They have more money than Spurs and looking at the targets that theyre getting so far since their new Scouting department got put in place/January transfer work I'll be worried if I was a Spurs supporter.

Arsenal and Liverpool looks like a two horse race for that position. With the rumoured buys already for Liverpool they've already have gained the ground before the season has started. Now people will mention Suarez leaving will hurt them but it won't whether he stays or goes because they'll go out and spend it on Martinez who theyve been tracking, Benteke, Soldado who ever else you want to mention(they have a knack of signing the next worldie in that position). They'll also improve their defense with another cb looking like its Papa and Migs as keeper. Reina and Skrtel contributed to atleast 10 errors that lead to goals during the whole of last season, thats 30pts. Liverpools final position last yr was False in a way they were alot better then it showed on the final standings.

Spurs wont have much to spend which they need to, they also have failed to sign a striker 3 windows running. lets say they sign someone like Soldado he'll cost them 20mil where are they going to get the rest of the money they dont have alot of players that comand a good price apart from Bale who they don't want to sell yet, I believe he would be a goner if it wasn't for his newborn.

takes a deep breath...thats what I think and I'm interested what you guys think ?

Assuming that United, CIty and Chelsea will claim the top three spots, Spurs will struggle to fight off both Arsenal and Liverpool for fourth. They should have struck whilst the iron was hotter.

They might do, but Liverpool still have holes in their first choice team and not that much depth to cover injuries. Spurs will be looking to buy a striker and they probably need better full backs, pretty much the same as Liverpool. I'd like to see Kelly getting a chance at RB this coming season once he is fit again.

Of course they can play better. You can't say Spurs have hit the ceiling in terms of becoming a better side defensively, and there is no more they can do to improve their CS record this season. Every player/team can improve.

LFC could be starting the season without Suarez and Sturridge has yet to prove he can be relied on for a full campaign.

Lucas, Stevie G, Coutinho provide great quality in the middle but you can't forget how inconsistent Liverpool can be at home. They throw alot of points away at Anfield in games they should win. Not saying that can't change but you have to consider it in the argument.

You also have to consider Tottenham can't keep a clean sheet and they also can't win if Bale doesn't score, Liverpool decimated teams without Suarez for the last several games of the season and with the signings of Aspas, MK, Mignolet and Toure we'll be inevitably stronger, I just think it's an absolutely ludicrous statement based on skepticism...

It's just an opinion not a personal attack on your club.

I acknowledged above that you will be far stronger at the back this season. I also said that Spurs could become a better side defensively.

The form was good without Suarez but that doesn't necessarily mean you won't be affected by the loss of a player of his quality. Players of his quality make you a better side and they are not easy to replace.

It's nice that your optimistic about your team Lawro and I know I do the same probably, but I wouldn't get carried away. You finished 7th 10 points off Spurs and it looks like your losing your best player (by a distance). Yeah you've made promising signings but none of them have proved they have the ability to replace and improve on Suarez' role in the team. I predict you'll finish 6th

You just referred to Spurs history above as a reason for them not being a good side defensively? At least keep your argument consistent.

It doesn't appear we are interested in Soldado at all (Spurs are), we won't buy Benteke (price) and Martinez is a very long shot. My prediction is Liverpool 5th or 6th. Signings Mkhitaryan, Mignolet, Toure, Luis Alberto, Aspas and another CB. Papadopoulos has had serious injuries and has a large price tag, i suspect Tiago Ilori and maybe someone else with more experience.

I heard we scouted Soldado last month also Alderweireld is still very much an option.

that isnt true we could go for any of those we have scouted strikers just incase Suarez gets sold. Do you honestly think we'll sell him and not go after a striker. if you havent noticed by now Rodgers doesn't trust nor want Sturridge to be first choice.

MK is really good he'll get atleast 10goals next yr he's pretty much Gerrards replacement for goals from midfield. Migs,Toure, Papa and Ilori improve our defense , Papa is our 1st choice we aint worried about his injury its just to put his price down since schalke want in and around 18mil. If not we sign someone else. Aspas wide left is Downing replacement and Alberto is his reserve.

Alberto is a Attacking Midfielder/Centre Forward. Papadopoulos injury is very very serious, he almost had to retire as a result of it. Sturridge will lead the line in my opinion. We aren't after Soldado, Benteke will both cost too much and won't fit the system as well and Martinez would cost in excess of 40m.

alberto is a left sided player that plays like reira but also can play in behind the striker. bench player he would be starter at sevilla next season.

Papa rumours who knows but theres other options

Sturridge won't lead the line why do you think he wasn't starting games while suarez played. his form is up and down to be a genuine starter for pool.

soldado and benteke would cost 20-25 mil that isnt alot when your getting 50mil from suarez and martinez is a known taregt weve been tracking before he even went to porto so its automatic that we go after him. he'll cost from 25-35mil no more since he's only been there one yr

This is a more optimistic view than your typical pre-season Spurs fan, which is going some.

Liverpool will no doubt be stronger given the money being splashed about, but in a straight fight I'd still rather be Spurs right now.

i wouldnt spurs and liverpool don't compete fiancially, liverpools kitty is atleast 35mil before sales if they get CL they can spend close to 50mil spurs can't, 25mil is a big difference thats one really good player

      Why I disagree..
      Very good manager in AVB.
      Very good keeper in Lloris.
Solid centre backs in Vertonghen and Kaboul.
Walker a very promising wing back, BAE probably needs replacing.
Dembele, Sandro - two of the better defensive mids in the league
Gareth Bale or 80 million pounds - either will equal a chance of the top 4.
The inevitable signing of a good striker.
People overlooking that Dempsey should settle in & that Holtby showed in the Euro's he has the potential to be a really great player

        1. yes he is but so is rodgers hes proved it last season playing with youth and still only being 10pts off whats spurs reason for not getting CL
        2. Migs was just as good, reina is good just has had 2 poor season
        3.Agger and pools new cb
4 GJ is better than Walker spurs fans didnt even want him in there team last yr, Enrique is better than bae
        5.Lucas Gerrard
6 Suarez 50mil, bale 80mil will never happen LOL
        7. really 3 yrs running
        8. dempsey is ageing and hotby is ok player but very over rated, euro performance means nothing he's vastly superior to most of them in exp and everything else

If Swansea have decent early fixtures, Rangel is in my team, no questions asked.

But how much do you think he'll be?

5.5m ... I think 6m would be an unlikely increase. I agree though his stats from a last season were impressive. My only concern is uefa involvement and how it will affect Swansea's league form.

Yeah I don't think Europa involvement is any good for FPL especially as they don't have a big squad.

For the mid table clubs Europa is a nightmare. Just look at Newcastle. Bolton and villa in the past only dealt with it by fielding kids, which was also unpopular with fans. Their squads are just not strong enough to cope with another competition.

Things could get messy for them trying to juggle between the competitions. I was going to suggest N.Taylor might be a good pick as Davies could play Europa or vice versa but that doesn't stop the rest of the team being fatigued or struggling to compete.
