Pre-Season

Sleeper – David Silva

Having helped steer City to the title the season before, David Silva’s displays ensured he was firmly ensconced in the premium price bracket when the player lists were rolled out across the Fantasy games last summer. The only midfielder to kick off the campaign with a double figure price tag, Silva cost 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after registering six goals, 17 assists and 21 bonus points, for an overall total of 184 points in 2011/12:

By the end of Gameweek 10, however, a paltry return of two assists set the tone for the remainder of the season as Silva, like City, failed to replicate the form of the previous campaign. Granted, there was the occasional explosive performance – such as 16 point hauls against Arsenal and Fulham in Gameweeks 12 and 23 respectively – which served a reminder of his undoubted talents but this merely masked his lack of consistency from a Fantasy perspective.

Despite 29 starts and three sub appearances in Roberto Mancini’s final season in charge at the Etihad, the little Spaniard produced attacking returns on just 12 occasions and, while he served up four sets of double figures in front of his own fans, Silva delivered just four assists on the road all term. A total of four goals, 12 assists and 20 bonus points helped Silva to an overall score of 147 points – just twelfth best midfielder in FPL, on a par with mid-price options Robert Snodgrass (152) and Kevin Nolan (149), as City’s doomed attempt to defend their crown led to Mancini’s dismissal.

The Prospects

With Manuel Pellegrini now installed in the hotseat, a change in approach looks on the cards. The Chilean has promised to deliver a more attacking brand of football in his first term in charge and has been quick to cite Silva as “a player who makes a difference”. While Pellegrini has already snapped up Jesus Navas from Sevilla and is keen to acquire Isco from former club Malaga, he’s likely to remain firmly reliant on Silva, then.

Tactics may dictate the degree of his appeal, though, with a handful of strong prospects vying for our attention at the Etihad. If Pellegrini opts for a 4-2-3-1, Silva could be handed a role on the left, with Navas on the opposite flank, though the club’s possible failure to capture Isco may well see Silva line up in “the hole” behind a lone forward – thus boosting his prospects. Similarly, Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system would allow Silva to flourish from a central berth behind a front two, with Yaya Toure sitting deeper alongside Fernandinho.

City’s lack of a clinical edge cost them dearly last term – having racked up 93 goals in their title-winning season, Mancini’s men scored just 66 times in 2012/13, with their chief Fantasy assets frustrating time and again. Opposition sides seemed to have worked out how to frustrate the defending champions, with Mancini’s tactics proving largely ineffectual when it mattered most – an overhaul is sure to reinvigorate our faith in their chief protagonists.

After last term’s disappointment, a slight drop in cost seems inevitable across the Fantasy games. Silva is likely to slip to around the 9.5 mark in FPL and with the likes of Gareth Bale, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard all looking set to rise in price after scoring 190 points or more last time out, he may ultimately prove better value if Pellegrini can revitalise City’s attack. Certainly, the opening three fixtures, which see City entertain Newcastle and Hull with a trip to Cardiff sandwiched in between, could hardly be any kinder and make a persuasive case for early investment in Pellegrini’s side.

Don't think Utd will sign Ronaldo, but if they did what would be the percentage of people captaining him?

    80?

So, if Ronaldo did come back to United (a big IF I know) will it ruin FPL ?

Will we end up in a worse Captain 'lock' than Mark with his RVP duvet ?

Won't happen anyway but would be interested to see who had the cajonies to not captain him, maybe the guy on Channel 4 now but not many others.

It would just mean the captaincy is no longer a factor, and everyone is playing the game with a budget of around £85m spread between the other 14 squad members.

You could be right, I think I started playing the season after he left - but some of the old school could probably advise what FPL was like I'm 'Ronaldo Time'

Just got asked by a friend what I thought about United's centre back pairing under Moyes. I'm curious to hear your thoughts? 🙂

    This was my answer:

I still think Rio and Vidic will be our 1st choice pairing, with Evans at 1st replacement, followed by Smalling and then Jones. Hopefully Vidic will be back to full fitness next season and therefore will no longer need to be rotated like he was upon his return from injury last season, so he can hopefully be a permanent fixture at centre back. Although I hope I'm wrong, I think Rio's weakness in his back could be with him for the remainder of his career, so he will most likely have to be rested from time to time, but with Evans, Smalling and Jones we've got enough youthful talent in our squad for it not to be a problem.

With Jones being our 5th choice centre back, according to my answer, my attention turned to where we will utilise his talent:
I think Jones will be used more at right back and in the midfield. I think Jones will get enough game time if rotated among the 3 roles. He's got a lot of fight to bring to the team, so it would be nice for him to tie down a permanent role, but Rafael's past season should've secured him the Right Back spot, while I don't think Jones' best position is at centre back.

Perhaps if he works a bit on his distribution he could be used more often in the midfield, where he could be a real asset to the team with his engine, passion and fight, and some marauding box-to-box runs. But with United consistently rotating Carrick's midfield partner, I'm hesitant to say he'd nail down a spot there either. And Moyes could be looking to bring in a midfielder to partner Carrick on a more permanent basis.

I do think his best position is at right back, where he was truly brilliant during a period in 2011-12. But we have a nice 'problem' on our hands, with 2 of the best young right backs in the world, but as I mentioned earlier, it certainly seems like Rafael has tied down the right back position with last season's form.

Ultimately, Jones' ability to play pretty much anywhere should not be seen as a problem, but rather as a positive, and I think he's got the mindset not to get frustrated from getting moved around the pitch. Hopefully he will avoid any injury problems this season, and we will be able to get the best out of him in 2013-14!

Sorry if this seems like a 'United forum-like' post, my name and grav, doesn't help this! 😉
But I am curious to hear your opinions on United's CB pairing and Jones' role under Moyes.

    Cheers chaps 😀

Great article. Do you agree that Evans should remain 1st choice? I just feel so much more confident with Rio and Vidic. Although, that is with the Vidic of old, which I hope is the case come the start of the season!

            With a new coach, it's a toss-up, isn't it?

IMO it 'should be Evra - Vidic - Rio/Evans - Rafael

Jones used as utility/fill-in across the back and into CDM.

And good starters needn't be Melville-length containing "engine, passion and fight, and some marauding box-to-box runs" puffery.

Vidic is a rock, best CB in the league by a mile, IMO.

Evans still goes squirrelly from time-to-time, but is more consistent than Jones at CB.

Fair enough, Eric but posting "tldr" is likely to draw a negative reaction from some - it's hardly contributing to the discussion or, like Evs said, giving the poster a fair crack. The United CB pairing is certainly a topic well worthy of discussion.

Copied and pasted a message to a friend who's English is better than his football knowledge. Apologies for being too long my lord ;).

I posted this comment, like Ginkapo said, as a discussion starter, not in the hope to get some votes.

I'm not directing this at you King Eric. No disrespect intended.

But I do think that many people in the community are interpreting the new system here incorrectly. Many posters are becoming critiques, rather than this being an improved platform to discuss football. This whole 'building a rep' fiasco should be done away with. How often did you see +1 comments in the past? The same rationale around the +1, should be carried through to the current voting system. And perhaps, after reading a comment, if you think it would be beneficial for other posters to read it, then +1, and if it was a complete waste of time and full of nonsense -1. That should be the full extent of the voting system in my view.

to be honest you guys need to forget about the Ferdinand/Vidic past it and if you start with that pairing you could struggle to get top 3.

Jones isnt good enough for cb, he's one of those versatile players that can play most of the defensive position but isnt good enough to start or hold down a regular spot.

I would start Smalling he's similar time in his carrer when Evans started for you guys past 2 seasons and I think he's better than himeven though evans has inproved he makes shocking mistakes and WC strikers terrorise him.

Not sure on your teams rumour but I heard you guys were after Garay maybe he'll be bought in so he'll end up starting

Indeed. Most United forums think Garay is coming. Given his age and experience he's not coming to be 5th or 6th choice. It's safe to assume medical evidence is that either Rio or Vidic won't play many games, and Garay will be competing with Evans to be 1st choice. Incidentally Jones is definitely not a midfielder, he's only been played there out of desperation. Watch out for new signings there.

If Vidic keeps clear of the physio room and nails down his spot in the defense, he could be a great route into the United defense. His aerial threat at set-pieces could bring back the goals of seasons past, and United should be a relatively consistent producer of clean sheets too. So with last season's lack of game time, Vidic could be quite handy if priced at 6.5. I hope he's not priced at 7.0, which would really detract from his FPL attraction.

It's a very similar situation with John Terry IMO.

I agree! He was reintroduced slowly into the team and he's had some time to recover now, so I'm just hoping he spends some time in the gym during the pre-season and returns as the Vidic of old! More in hope than opinion...

I don't know how correct this is, but a friend of mine who's an Everton fan said Moyes has always fancied a left footed centre back partnering a right footed centre back. I suppose this could be proven to some degree with Distin replacing Lescott immediately after he was sold to City.

Garay is left footed, while Rio, Vidic, Evans, Smalling and Jones are all right footed, so this could be an indication for Moyes' alleged interest.

I'm not too sure how true all the Garay rumours are. I can't imagine having 6 centre backs without selling one, although all of our current possible centre backs have had injury problems in the past.

Silva should drop to 9 but it will probably be 9.5. Aguero to 11 just because he's Citys main guy he won't drop much.

Anyway I'm getting both of these guys, Silva had slight niggles that kept him in/out so he couldn't really get any continuity to his play not only that but his Batman was also out. Aguero last season was F****ed around by Mancini at the start by resting him and then when he came back he got injured and was out for a while he then returned which he probably was rushed by Mancini because the title was slipping away and ended up getting injured again so the rest of the season he played out being not even fit.
Aguero also has once every 3-4 season a yr where he's so bad that nothing is going for him, it happened at AM, I know this because I've followed him closely for a while..

I believe HTC One has the new Ultra-pixel camera technology instead of a Mega-pixel one that we are all used to. I have read somewhere that more manufacturers will adopt it in the future as photos taken should be of a better quality. Definitely go for either HTC One or S4. Android is clearly winning the battle right now and is the way to go imo.

I'm looking for 'the' spreadsheet. It's the one where you can see, at a glance, the home and away fixtures of each team. There was a beautiful example last season (buggered if I can find the link) where you clicked on each team and it highlighted which team had a home fixture that week compared to every other team in the league (blank red boxes meant that neither team had).

    Anybody seen such a spreadsheet?

I hadn't been on lately this my take on RVP issue, before I start I didn't have him for the 2nd half of last season and like some people thought he was essential it ended up not being the case and in most it was their downfall.

I'm not going to get RVP because he'll cost the same may even go up .5. I think Moyes will start Hernandez up top this season anyway because it's the first time in his life he finally has those attackers up top. He'll play 2 strikers this will not help RVP's fpts because he needs to be the main guy up top just like at Arsenal to be getting the pts you want from him for that price. Personally I also believe since he ended up getting his 1st pl title his performances will naturally drop because hes in his 30's now, 2 seasons ago he had no grey hairs last season they came out of know where and this season he'll be going for the Clooney look. As for their fixture's theyre tough and he isn't worth it when the other big teams strikers are just as good and have better fixtures. I had Kagawa planned aswell but he's back on the shelve until they get the easier teams.

The first paragraph is very lobsided, had RVP for that period of the season and he was essential to my final ranking. To say Moyes "will" play two strikers is guesswork, he may build the team as SAF did around the strenghts of RVP, you don't need 2 up top to win games, in fact many teams now go with one. As for age, RVP is not going to have a physical meltdown over the summer, he doesn't run on his grey hairs! As for tough fixtures, we are talking about the champions, and class acts like Van Persie can do damage against the best of them. That's about it I think.

he went 9 games without a goal if i remember, how's getting the occasional 5pts good for that price I went and got Benteke who outscored him.

I think Moyes will whether its Hernandez or not, first time he has this luxary. 100% sure he won't start up top with just RVP. Look RVP may not lose much but he did last season compared to his last yr at Arsenal ask any supporter of theirs and they'll tell you that. Still the drop off wasn't much becuase you guys didn't have a striker like him since Tevez/Ronaldo days.

Fixtures aren't that much important agree with that but at the start i'll rather have Sturridge, Aguero and incoming Higuain for atleast 3-5mil cheaper leaving you to improve the rest of your team.

he's just that type of player, powerful types take a bit to get into stride. He'll still score but like last season he would get transfered in do nothing than everyone would take him out just when he end up getting pts. Then when he ends up get pts consistently is when you should strike and put him in your team.

it's been like that until now but it could easily change

                  isnt miguel good enough though.

I think you need a more commanding cb with more exp maybe a sahko.

Mert isnt good enough wont start in any of the top six sides, Koscielny has improved but don't think he's as good as you arsenal supprters think. He makes alot of mistakes that cost you when he isnt on his game similar to Skrtel.

Miquel won't make it at Arsenal in my opinion. Not a lot i can say on your other points as i couldn't disagree more, especially about Koscielny. Each to their own i guess.

Agreed. Who's really going to have room for him? Plus I can see the assists beingnshared out even more so with the likes of Fernandinho and Navas arriving. Aguero or nothing for me, and if they bring in another striker, it'll probably be nothing.

Can some one explain to me why Germany remain the main power brokers here in Europe, after such a small timeframe in history, after they were beaten in the 2nd World War?

I will add that when the Allies divided the country into East and West after Hitler had taken his own life in his bunker, was it conceivable that but a few decades later after the cold war Germany would become the fortress of the European banking industry.

Help appreciated I'm doing a paper.

      Strongest Economy
Business Economies that have been wiped out by war have a clean slate to start from. They aren't burdened by aging industries and politics that were designed when the telegraph was the fastest method of communication.

Germany was rebuilt by the allies in order to pay reparation.
Unfortunately the rest of Europe bankrupt from the war was left to rot.
The Americans had made fortunes from the 2nd world war as they did the first.

Russia wasted most of it's post war assets in a pointless and un-winnable arms race against America.

Leaving Germany rebuilt and buoyant moving into the second half of the century.

I don't suppose we'll ever get the full story. I'm pretty sure Gus had been putting out feelers for jobs.
There was then thought to be a falling out between him and the chairman.

Word is, it's a lot deeper than that. Best for the club just to move on. I don't believe Gus really wants to be here any more.

Look at the amount of money other countries spend on defence, which Germany and Japan were no longer allowed to. Throw in some admirable work ethic and you have two success stories of the post-war era.

They were not in such a dominant position before the Euro came into play since when their currency has been effectively devalued which has caused a long period of economic growth and the usual inflation that comes with this has not happened as the european central bank (ecb) keeps interest rates in check to ensure inflation stays at or close to 2%.

If you are from the UK imagine if sterling was devalued by 20% in the morning and you were selling all your manufactured goods for 20% less. Do you think your exports would grow? do you think this would lead to employment and wage growth? do you think business investment would grow? Really I don't know why the UK has not signed up to the euro years ago. Yes there have been problems with the Euro but once countries understand they have to try and control inflation via internal economic policy rather than relying on the ECB it will work fine imo.

Ps Apologies for the long winded post and if there are any economists out there that can set me right if I am wrong I would appreciate it as my knowledge of economics is of the layman type.

Tx for your input and all above. I am more interested in coming to terms with how a country can become so financially powerfull after being comprehensively beaten by England and her allies, after waging a facsist war and commiting genocide on an industrial scale.

What deals are done to have the power base of European Economies in the hands of the Germans. What deals are done and with whom?

The Euro is a product of the question but does not give me as a free thinker any answers.

Germany was strong long before the Euro was launched. 1999 as a virtual currency with notes and coins following in 2002.
I'm afraid joining the Euro would simply be pouring good money after bad.

The European Unions accounts have almost never passed the Auditors. With Fraud, theft and mis-accounting practice being the main reasons (a fact kept as quiet as possible from voters).

          Typical eurosceptic view imo ILF.

The bounce to the German economy of the lower currency has been immense and the sad thing is the Germans think they have done it all themselves.

Forget the whole European accounts and stuff and ask yourself what would happen if your currency was devalued as I said above.

You guys still contribute to the euro area financially but you don't get the benefits of the currency.
For countries like Ireland and other smaller countries the currency is overvalued which makes our exports expensive and the fact that we didn't realize that we needed to take internal measures to halt hyperinflation in the 2000's (as the Irish central bank couldn't do it by taking money out of the system and raising interest rates etc) meant we were one of the first casualties but I think going forward the euro will go from strength to strength despite all the naysayers.

Haha fair enough, as I say I am not an economist so I can't argue specifics and economic history only a laymans view of whats going on. I will have to bow to your knowledge of accounts if you have specifics. I just see euroscepticism as an almost national sport in the UK at the moment and I reckon it would be the best thing ever for your economy if you joined the club but I am probably way wrong.

Ps are there (or were there) any UK economists advocating a move to the euro?

Exactly as I said above PF they are all small countries and they suffer the opposite of Germany in that their currencies would be valued at less than the euro if they were independent making it cheaper for tourists to go there and business to manufacture there but since they signed up to it they now have to find a way of regulating their internal economies by means other than devaluing their currencies as would have been done in the past.

Another problem for the small countries is while their currency is overvalued which hurts manufacturing, they don't have borrowing costs of a country with such a high country like Germany does so the interest on the national debt is extortionate currently which is exacerbating the problem imo.

Again I could and probably do have it all wrong.

But I wish you could collate it to the original question and these small countries could get an angle on why they have so many lost sons and still Germany are the Pinnacle of European finance.

Unfortunately that would take someone with more knowledge and inclination than me PF.

There is a theory that the Germans have an inbuilt mentality that is both against debt and pro savings as they were crippled for at least a generation due to paying back the money lent to them to rebuild Germany post ww2. The psychological angle might be one worth looking into for your assessment?

Averages about 10 a season, played a season in the PL for WBA. Is club captain and so nailed on, on pens and set-pieces and plays behind the striker

          I reckon he'll be about 5.0

worth it if you want something like RvP Higuain Aguero/Cavani up top, though I'm still on RvW

on Asaps hopefully he isnt put in the striker position on the fantasy game. he wont spend any time in that positon and will likely take Downings spot in the team so he'll be reverse oop.

6.5 to 7.5, as a midfielder will be good otherwise there's no point him being even considered he'll be too expensive and Coutinho will be the one you'll will want for that kind of money. Anyway Aspas is pretty much the new Bellamy if people havent seen him play.

Spain 1-0 Italy (A tight game defined by a stroke of genius from one of the Spanish midfielders, Balotelli is sorely missed by the Italians).

Brazil(p) 2-2 Uruguay (Brazil go through on penalties after taking a 2-0 lead through Oscar & Thiago Silva, however two late goals by Suarez & Forlan take the game into extra time. Lugano misses the decisive penalty.)

Yeah it's hard to argue against RVP but the extra 3m or so over higuain will probably buy me sturridge and a def/mid upgrade of .5m so I don't think I will be going anywhere near him at 13.5m. Take his 4 offsde goals in a row at the end of last season off him and he was extremely poor value imo but as I say it is probably a big gamble not going with him.

Last year I went without RVP until about gw12 when utd fixt improved and I had some value built up. I was avg 8.something for my capt up to then and when I brought in RVP my capt avg went down to 6.9. I still think I made the right decision to bring in RVP but I am kind of sorry I didn't stick to my guns.

The crucial factor for me is how Pellegrini intends to set up his team to play afar more attacking style of football. Man City under him are a clean slate for me. Whether this achieves sucess for them remains to be seen, however we may see more in the goals scored column compared to last season.

They were the top attacking team in terms of shots (and shots on target I think) last year so should have scored more but the morale in the camp never looked right imo. I am expecting a big bounce on both the def and attacking fronts this year with the new blood and new focus coming into the club.
