Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Crystal Palace and Hull

Our series of articles analysing potential rotation pairings for the season ahead got underway towards the end of last week with a look at the prospects offered up by West Ham and Southampton. This time round, we cast an eye over a couple of the promoted clubs as Crystal Palace and Hull come under the spotlight.

The Fixtures

Similar to West Ham and Southampton, Palace and Hull’s home/away fixtures alternate perfectly over the entirety of the 2013/14 campaign. Delving further into the data, by alternating the duo in accordance with home fixture over the first half of the season you would play host to one of last term’s top eight just five times in the opening 19 Gameweeks.

For Palace, this occurs three times – Gameweek 1 against Tottenham, Gameweek 9 with Arsenal and Gameweek 11 at home to Everton, whereas Hull are affected twice – Liverpool roll up to the KC Stadium in Gameweek 13 and United also arrive in Gameweek 18. Aside from this quintet of fixtures, you’d face (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR, STO, NEW, FUL) over the first 19 fixtures – a pretty strong looking schedule. Furthermore, for those eyeing up three-way rotation defender options, it’s worth noting that those above-mentioned tricky fixtures could be navigated by also having a Norwich backline option on board – they have home games against Everton, Cardiff, West Ham, Palace and Fulham in Gameweeks 1,9, 11, 13 and 18 respectively.

While the first half of the campaign is kind, the latter part becomes a little trickier for Palace and Hull, particularly in the last couple of months. From Gameweek 30 onwards, this combination would entertain City (twice), Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton over the final nine fixtures – not the easiest of run ins by any means and one that may need addressing when it rolls around.

Defence

Crystal Palace
As mentioned in our article on Ian Holloway’s side earlier this summer, Palace were hardly the most resilient of sides last time out. With six clean sheets in 23 games at Selhurst Park and five accrued on the road, it may well be that Julian Speroni turns out the best value bet, with save points aplenty anticipated for the Argentine. From an attacking perspective, centre-half Damien Delaney produced three goals and a couple of assists last year, though left-back Jonathan Parr provided four assists in 38 matches before sustaining ankle ligament damage; if he’s fit for the start of the season, he may be one to consider.

Price-wise, it’s noticeable that all three first-choice keepers from the promoted sides last time out began the campaign at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Many of the defenders, on the other hand, were afforded a starting cost of 4.0 – a factor which will likely affect our plans, with a potentially crucial 1.0 saving on the cards.

Hull
Steve Bruce’s side were a little more reliable at the back in last season’s Championship, with 10 clean sheets registered in front of their own fans and six on the road. Hull mainly utilised a 3-5-2 formation last season which may, potentially, limit the number of defensive options available if Fantasy games classify their wing-backs as midfielders – all the more frustrating if Bruce decides to operate with the 4-4-1-1 rolled out for the final, promotion-winning game of the season against Cardiff.

The Tigers are still in the hunt for a goalkeeper after on-loan David Stockdale returned to parent club Fulham – he may well make his way back to the KC, though Bruce has also been linked with the likes of Kaspar Schmeichel and Chris Kirkland.

Maynor Figueroa has arrived from relegated Wigan and certainly has experience of operating in a three-man backline should Bruce keep faith in last term’s tactics and while Abdoulaye Faye chipped in with four goals from centre-half last season, a lack of mobility raises question marks over his game time as a regular in the top-flight. Paul McShane may also be earmarked by some – he was utilised as part of a back-three and proved versatile enough to be shifted to left-back, though Hull are clearly in the market for new defenders and have agreed terms with Birmingham for the transfer of Curtis Davis earlier this week. With no stand-out defensive options from either side at present, however, a keeper pairing looks the most enticing combination, with Speroni teamed up with Hull’s eventual first-choice stopper.

Attacking Options

The Main Men
Both sides can be expected to be kindly priced across the Fantasy games, affording us a handful of budget propositions to mull over – whether there’s value in their acquisition is perhaps another matter altogether. Certainly, with last season’s top scorer Glen Murray injured and star player Wilfried Zaha snapped up by Man United, Palace will have to dip into the market in order to grab our attentions. Murray looked particularly promising – 30 goals and seven assists from 43 appearances highlights just how clinical he was in the previous campaign and given that he may be out until Christmas, Ian Holloway seems certain to pick up a replacement.

At present, Owen Garvan appears to be the most alluring option – playing in “the hole”, he produced four goals and six assists from 30 appearances and has a fair share of corners and free-kicks, while Yannick Bolasie registered three goals and eight assists over 45 games from the left flank. A price of 5.0 apiece seems realistic for the duo, with a ceiling of 5.5 likely.

As hinted at beforehand, Hull’s prospects may hinge on the classification of their wing-backs. Bruce fielded Robbie Brady and on-loan Ahmed Elmohamady on the left and right of midfield respectively last term; the Egyptian is expected to soon complete a permanent deal from Sunderland and if either is listed as a defender, they could provide us with real out of position potential – in all likelihood, though, it would be a real surprise if they came in as defenders in FPL.

Nevertheless, the pair may still be decent midfield prospects if their prices are kind enough. Brady has a share of set-pieces and corners and chipped in with four goals and 13 assists last season and was also fielded in “the hole” in a 4-4-1-1, while Elmohamady produced three goals and nine assists and was also utilised on the right of a midfield four. Skipper Robert Koren could also be one to watch. Fielded as the most advanced central midfielder when Bruce rolled out a 3-5-2 and with spot-kicks, a share of set-pieces and corners in his locker, Koren produced nine goals and five assists from 40 appearances – once again, a maximum cost of 5.5 is anticipated, with 5.0 perhaps the likeliest scenario.

With eight goals and four assists in 23 appearances, Sone Aluko ended the campaign as Hull’s second joint-top scorer despite failing to play since January due to an Achilles injury. Bruce has already admitted the Nigerian was key to his side’s 3-5-2 formation and is optimistic he’ll be ready for the start of the season – last term’s injury is likely to keep Aluko’s price low and, with a maximum 5.5 expected, he could be a real under the radar cheap third forward.

With over two months of the summer transfer window remaining, though, there are sure to be a handful of new arrivals which may prove more enticing. A one-year loan return to Selhurst Park for Zaha has already been reported as a potential deal, while out-of-favour forwards such as Darren Bent and Peter Odemwingie have been linked with both clubs as Bruce and Holloway look for a little more top-flight experience to boost their respective sides’ chances of survival.

Doubt they will get near 10 clean sheets between them. Lots may look at getting them with how well their fixtures rotate and their likely 8m combined price, its going to burn burn burn!

Someone asked earlier about clean sheet trends throughout the season so I've dug up my research from last year - pales in comparison to what Chris Glover's blog covers (obviously) but might still be of interest for those of a more basic way of thinking (like me 🙂 ).

Basically, I divided each season up into 4 roughly equal chunks in terms of games played and looked at clean sheets kept in those periods.

My stats cover seasons 2009/10 to 2011/12, I haven't bothered going back and updating it for last season but if anyone's particularly keen I might take a look.

    The overall figures are:

    *Clean Sheets Per Game*

    Season----Q1----Q2----Q3----Q4
    11/12------0.26--0.24--0.27--0.30
    10/11------0.27--0.24--0.25--0.24
    09/10------0.23--0.29--0.33--0.31

I also looked specifically at the results for the 'big hitters' (at the time I classed these as Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs & Liverpool):

*Big Hitters Clean Sheets Per Game*

    Season----Q1----Q2----Q3----Q4
    11/12------0.21--0.65--0.36--0.38
    10/11------0.37--0.28--0.40--0.35
    09/10------0.24--0.44--0.51--0.55

And finally I looked at the performance of the promoted clubs each year:

*Promoted Sides Clean Sheets Per Game*

    Season----Q1----Q2----Q3----Q4
    11/12------0.27--0.15--0.19--0.23
    10/11------0.18--0.19--0.13--0.11
    09/10------0.20--0.30--0.11--0.15

So pretty much in line with the common belief - the bigger teams tighten up as the season goes on and the promoted clubs get leakier. Backs up the theory of starting off cheap at the back and then investing more later on.

Have the figures for goals conceded and happy to post them but I tend to only worry about clean sheets.

I can also put the figures up for a specific team if anyone is that bothered but I can't imagine anyone is!

Very nice figures. I would be the one that requested the CS trends.

Personally these figures are great in hindsight, and it's nice to see a trend confirming the strategy you have mentioned.

Perhaps what we should be looking for is a good indication of something that would spark this trend: Would love to see where you think CS trends for certain budget teams start, and why you think they start 🙂

Also, any idea what happened to last year's figures?

This was analysis I did 12 months ago so it didn't include 2012/13, if you think there's merit in it I can go back and run the stats for that too but I suspect the trend will be similar.

As for the reasons behind the trends, that's a much more speculative topic but I'll have a pop.

Perhaps the promoted sides are a bit more of a surprise package at the start of the season? In August they're full of enthusiasm and spirit and more able to combat the established sides who've taken them for granted slightly?

            Dear GWM,

Flattery will get you nowhere, but since you're that honest... 😛

Mmm theory wise I'd have to tie it to team tactics, and I'd back it up with stats. As much as the "cold wet night at Stoke" cliche has been overused, it is for a good reason, and only stats can justify whether a certain tactic is working. I'm not gonna go into the flaws for this argument (perhaps a hot topic for another day, I don't wanna rival Tommy's Berlin wall of text)

Regardless of what tactics/philosophies a certain team uses, a common metric has to signify what defense can potentially do well and when. One of the most accurate metrics that I've come across (which have been consistent with FPL points and thus are useful to me) is the shots-in-box against Shots per Goal Conceded ratio.

Without going too much into it, the "ideal"ly miserly defences (A) allows few shots in the box and (B) takes a lot of shots to be breached. Chances are only elite defences will satisfy both requirements, but we are looking for the next best thing: Allow shots, but resilient enough to keep them out. Stoke and West Ham, whether through fouls or Jussi/Bego's brilliant form, fell within those defenses (as well as Sunderland early season but they screwed up)

So having gone too much into it, I hope I got my point across.

There are unique things that also give certain teams character, like Steve Bould's contribution to Arsenal's "2 banks of 4" defence or Southampton's high pressing, but in the end this metric (where Experimental361 has done wonders in making graphs with this stat) is what I'd stick by in terms of looking for the next Stoke/WHU. In the meantime though, meaningful rotations are the way to go for me.

Ah, apologies, I thought you were looking for reasons why the promoted sides start relatively well then tail off whilst the reverse is true for the top teams. It appears you're debating more widely the reasons for defensive solidity - that's an even bigger topic which I must confess I can only scratch the surface of.

For what it's worth, when I did some analysis towards the end of last season I found the highest correlation was between goals conceded and 'big chances conceded' (perhaps unsurprisingly). Goals conceded and attempts in box was second on my list but combining it with another metric to determine the % of shots which result in a goal would lead to an even better measure, I'm sure.

To be honest I'm looking to come up with some broad rules of thumb which might help guide my decisions next season (such as start off cheap in defence and add big hitters later on), not try to reverse engineer a winning team through stats - it is an area which fascinates me though so I'll continue to read your posts with interest 🙂

Oh no completely my fault, I forgot to specify. I'll try to make my posts shorter 😛

Regarding the decision making process, think it's almost universal (on the FFS actives here at least) that we'd go by the rule you mention. I'm just pointing out the potential way of identfying a Stoke or a WHU, that's all.

And I cannot thank you enough. Do drop by TFPL and make friends, I'm usually there more 🙂 (And so is Gargamel if you're interested in a chat with him)

I suppose the metrics you're talking about will come into play once we're a little way into the season and you have some figures to play with - it will be a useful way of determining whether the clean sheets obtained by some teams are sustainable and whether some teams have been unlucky.

I made a stab at this towards the end of the season with a members table reviewing the previous 4 GWs and looking by team at no. of clean sheets, goals conceded, big chances conceded, and shots in box conceded. I then plugged the figures into a spreadsheet I'd set up and had a sort of defensive regression table to see who'd been 'lucky' or 'unlucky' as far as the figures went.

Not sure it was sophisticated enough to be genuinely useful but it gave me a slight insight into which bandwagons might be best avoided.

Sounds like you might have something a little more classy up your sleeve so I'll be looking out for that!

As for TFPL, I like the idea but I'd find it hard to split my time between two forums (moderating one), a job, a wife and a child - maybe the wife and child have to go 😉

I don't have something sophisticated, but I do have a blog atm (nothing to do with stats, more rather to do with my FPL season) and my aim is to come up with something along the lines of that. Otherwise I only use Chris Glover's blog as a reference anyway, since his study is the only one that I fully comprehend.

Your punt btw is a very good idea. Did you draw any conclusions from that?

Nothing substantial - I was more using it to try to get a feel for each team week to week/month to month rather than longer term than that. I also always knew that the model suffers from not taking into account the attacking prowess of the opponents faced in the fixtures analysed and those coming up - without factoring that in the stats are very flimsy.

What I'd really like to produce is something which combines all those factors and comes up with a prediction of clean sheets. I think Chris Glover probably has this covered though and I'm pretty sure others are more able minded and are working on tickers along these lines so it's probably an idea I'll end up shelving unless I get a lot of free time.

DZ tends to be my time off, although I occasionally dabble depending on what's going on at home. There's a chance I'll be in America for a short while with work so depending on timeframes I may see you there 🙂

I guess that's the beauty of the FFS community. Maybe if I start something you can add to it and we'll build on that Google Doc? Might come to something useful.

I do agree that stats are usually flimsy without a large sample size, but teams like Stoke and Norwich only went on epic CS runs around GW4-6 of the season, so we should have SOME data by then. We just have to pay attention to the early form defenses like West Ham (who kept 3CS in the first 4 and nothing after that)

I do hope to see you soon; You, Roscola, Tinkerman, Tommy and Gink really post stuff that have piqued my interest the most so far. TTYL, got a 5-a-side game against a state-level side tonight 😀

Interesting Q2 for 11/12. Is that when we had a cold snap in the UK and clean sheets could simply be put down to weather? Colder it gets, harder/worse the pitches get, less football is played. Of course the club needs to be able to defend 😉

Yeah, a real spike for the big hitters in that quarter, maybe the fixture list was stacked in their favour?

        Man Utd - P 9, C 5, CS, 6
        Man City - P 8, C 7, CS 3

    Good to go for gw1?

    4.5 (4.5)
    Azpli, 4.5, 4.5 (4.5, 4.0)
    Bale, Hazard, Coutinho, 6.0, 5.0
    Cavani, Higuain (5.0)

Bench correct, or should I play 5.0 instead of 5.0?
If chelsea won't have double, I will obviously make some changes and might put my trust in Rvp after all.
Tbh I still can't believe 4.5 was classified as defender - defo bargain and season keeper for me.
Bit worried about 4.5 playing time, but should be safe now.
Besides, 'cos I will save gw2 transfer, I'll have two freebies for gw3 and I can work that out then - no hits needed.
I will also save my wc until end of the season doubles.

If you still have some energy left, pleeease help me on this one
    a) 4.5 + 4.5
    b) 4.0 + 5.0
    c) or even azpli => 4.5 and then 5.0 => 7.0

If c), which 5.0? Pretty sure my rival will go a)....Aaargh decisions, decisions!!

True enough, I guess it depends on individual tactics and who else is available though - a nailed on 5th mid chipping in with an assist off the bench every so often might fit better into someone's team if there are a lot of good budget strikers. All speculation currently 🙂

Isn't the RVP vs Bale and Mata vs Hazard problem easily solved if Chelsea do have a DGW GW1?

If you want RVP in your team you will probably need a couple of 6.5 mids to get the money, and chances are you will also want one of Mata or Hazard for the long run.....so:-

GW1 - Do not get RVP but get a forward for around 10M, like Higuain or potentially Aguero, use the extra 3.5m (assuming RVP is 13.5M) to upgrade the 6.5M mid to Hazard/Mata so you now have both.

GW2 - Either hold till GW3 or downgrade either Mata or Hazard (depending on performance) to a 6.5M of choice, now you have seem them all play so are better infored.

GW3 - (Per above if not done already, if waiting you have more info but need to deal with price rises) Get in RVP for your 10m forward.

I'm interested in Palace and Hull from an attacking rotation. Koren and a cheap Hull player to alternate perhaps? Not too keen on either defensively though.

As I recall, when Blackpool were promoted they were a horror show at the back...great options in attack though.

    Hull/Palace/Southampton rotation looks quite strong:

wba, NOR/sto/SUN, SUN/nor, CAR/WHU, SWA, WHU/CPL, SWA, FUL, FUL, SUN/wba/sto, HUL, CPL/hul, nor, WHU, CAR, STO, wba, car, FUL

I think it's a bit better than the 3 way rotation with Norwich which the scouts suggested.while the Fulham 3 way rotation is probably about as good as the Norwich one.

if you're interested, all 3 rotations can be found in the linked spreadsheet
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiIgkb7euD-9dHZqZWVBM01iWjhveGRpSHgya0VFTUE#gid=6

    HUL/CPL/SOT is #21

I have to say I do admire the commitment of many on here.. Last year we had the Euros so the summer break flew by. We had a few days of under 21 this year which satisfied my bug a little but not much...

I have been busy at work but that's not new...For some reason I just can't be asked speculating on formations until I see the prices...

I have to say though I do like the rotation analysis Sir Paulos does (why did he change his name) and will be reading through these when the time comes to focus....

Swansea got 20 clean sheets in the Championship and then upgraded with Caulker and Vorm.

Hull and Palace only got 16 and 11 clean sheets respectively last season and haven't really upgraded their defences yet (Curtis Davies doesn't count).

Hull +9 goal difference in the league below, doesn't give much confidence. Blackpool under Holloway went all out attack to stay in the Prem and it hugely compromised the defence. He favoured a more attacking style in the Championship too so I can't see that changing, only managed 11 clean sheets last season.

I don't think people are studying rotations/speculating about tactics because they think it's necessary at this stage and they'll be underprepared for the new season - it's because they enjoy the process.

Have not checked in for a while. How did the "rotation of GKs" vs "play the same GK every week" debate end?

According to my stats I ended up with lower pts from my Jussi/Bego-rotation than if I had played any of them every game.

Needless to say I going to go for the "play the same GK every week" tactic next season.

About time! But £70m doesn't get you much at the 'European superpower' level. If they buy Higuian for £23m, Fellaini for around the same, Rooney for £25m, that doesn't leave much change from £70m.
