The Community Round Up

In out latest round up we once again take a look back at the best hot topics of the week and find that clean sheets, rotation and a possible Chelsea double gameweek have pre-occupied the community. We also look at the latest goings on in the community leagues taking place over the summer.

Hottest Topics

Professor Absinthe from the University of the “Deadzone”, which opens between 12am and 8am every day on Fantasy Football Scout, has been busy devising a couple of thesis this week analysing clean sheet data. His first looked at promoted sides defences over the last ten years. His shocking conclusions will give those looking for an uber cheap defence nightmares. His second piece of research looked deeper into clearn sheet statistics to see if it is possible to predict a clean sheet.

A probable Chelsea double gameweek at the start of the season prompted Christina to ask whether it is wise to double up on players in the same position, or to spread the risk across midfield and forward positions.

Looking further ahead Fantasy Football Lout has been analysing post January form to see if we can spot any trends as the season reaches its mid way point.

Meanwhile, Giggs Boson invited the community to gaze into their crystal balls and predict which will be the biggest flops in the up coming season.

Members of the community were also on hand to offer some advice around pre-season friendly analysis. Scroobius Mac and King Nil Miss were among those urging caution should fantasy mangers be tempted to take a punt on the next Danny Graham, who was notorious for failing to live up to his good pre season form last season.

Finally, our resident rotation expert In Tommy We Trust has been taking another look at three way rotation options, but this time shunning the traditional home and away format.

Community Leagues

The FFS UEFA Transfer Window Simulation stage reached the midfielder stage this week and saw Hull City, run by Damo and Kuqi Monster snap up the formidable midfield pairing of Iniesta and Bale. Arsenal, led by Zep, also excelled in the game’s simulated transfer market, with its acquisition of Moutinho and Cazorla. Current leaders are Fulham, under the guidance of PeppieandFelix, who managed to buy Mata and Hazard. Round 4 deadline, in which the teams will be looking to purchase strikers, is 23:59 BST this Saturday. Anyone who would like to join can still sign up here.

Elsewhere Conrad’s Confederation Cup Fantasy Football game came to a dramatic conclusion last weekend, with Conrad himself winning. His captaincy of Fred gave him a commanding score of 246, leaving Patrick Star in second and MB10 in third.

Higuain , Aguero and Chelsa striker

    can't go wrong with this

hopefully Kagawa will play under moyes and get some pts on the board cause i really wanna go without RVP

Very expensive frontline. You won't be able to afford Bale, Kagawa and Mata/Hazard aswell.

It doesn't matter how cheap your defence is, I highly doubt you'll be able to afford Higuain, Aguero, Chelsea striker, Hazard & Bale.

I'm weighing up going without Van Persie too. I think his value was inflated last year due to the lack of competition amongst big strikers only Suarez. If Arsenal and Chelsea spend big on strikers as expected , Adebayor finds some form and Aguero finds form then Van Persie will almost certainly be overpriced.

People said the same thing last year about his price. And if Chelsea buy cavani he would be just as expensive. People will have to make a choice between them.

If Rooney leaves rvp is 100% nailed on for me though

Agreed, it's interesting how (I'm sure the Staff would have some traffic stats to back it up) - almost anyone who plays FPL half seriously has visited FFScout in their lives, and a large proportion check it regularly, yet many alleged 'casuals' are quick to taint someone overtly using the site.

It makes for an almost Shakespearen Farce when three out of the top 5 in a mini league bring in a player brought in from 'Spot The Differential' , all while protesting innocence/feigning shock at ever using a site for help!

And if he stayed at Arsenal earning 70,000 a week he'd be struggling to get by?

But to be honest it depends where he places his priority. At times on footballing websites it's easy to fall into the trap that football is all that matters which isn't truly the case. Apparently Ade has always donated a third (I believe) of his earnings to charity which is a considerable amount which goes someway towards justifying him leaving for a higher amount of dosh.

I'm getting a vibe that a lot of United fans are worried at this point time, particularly with Muelensteen going out, but Phil Neville is nonetheless a good replacement given his history with the club and the fact that he understands the perspective of the player

If anything else comes to mind Holy See I'll give you a shout.

Maybe a hit every other week for four hits early on for value and form players?

I wouldn't mind wcing early if I profited from it, but I...don't. I just play it poorly I guess. Think I'll do something along those lines, just take an early hit(s) and save the wc for those tasty end of season dooblies.

You have to stop looking at Overall Ranks till December... Without using WC, your team may be low in OR but after December you can build up a lot of places... I went from 700K in Dec to 43K by end and had already used my WC before Dec. Imagine if I had a WC for the late DGWs and didnt have to take those -12 point hits (x 2 times), I could have scored 24 points more, which would have put me somewhere in the 30K rankings...

The panic & wc buttons get pressed simultaneously unfortunately. Early price rises make me feel like I need to snap up the sale items asap. Determined this season to hold on longer.

A lot of the top ranked teams played their wildcard very early; we had a good discussion about this a couple of weeks ago. Reasons included getting in on bandwagons early, building team value for the second part of the season, and effectively allowing for a fresh start after the DGW opener.

Imagine if all the forwards transfers happen as rumored...

Higuain to Arsenal, Cavani to Chelsea/Man City, Negredo to Man City and Lewandowski/Rooney to Chelsea...

Would any guys out here still consider building a team around RVP then?

Personally, I would prefer a front line of Rooney (Chelsea), Cavani (Man City) and Higuin (Arsenal), although prices could be too high...

That was only true last season. Season before, Valencia was near essential for periods and Nani had some good spells too.

I'm with those who think Kagawa will provide a perfect hedge for a no-RVP gamble this season.

Well, if Moyes has any sense that's where he'll play him. And he's shown us that he's fond of having someone in that position (e.g. Fellaini).

Of course, the Rooney situation is a fly in that ointment and if pre-season shows no signs of Kagawa in the hole then I'll look elsewhere.

Couple of things stood out after watching him:

He really is not an all around striker; even the more 'selfish' strikers in the Premier League are decent passers and he didn't seem to have that about him.

He's an relatively good finisher, but his ability to sniff out space and get a lot of shots away stood out.

He was fairly good in the air, and appeared to be strong.

Will be interesting to see how he fares, especially in FPL terms.

Not sure I agree with Absinthe's post that budget defenders aren't worth it. The first argument was that CSs were at a decline but it did rise one year and there are too many external factors that influence these numbers so we can not extrapolate with any certainty. I predict there will be more CSs than last year.

An 'Uber' (please can we rename it? 🙁 ) defence may not get you many points or high PPG across those positions but spending an extra few million will not improve that drastically due to the nature of the position. You are better off sacrificing a slice of defensive returns in order to maximise the potential of your attack, always capable of exploding.

It's just that there are so many defenders at low prices producing decent enough returns to warrant the money saved being invested in the plethora of attacking options.

I'd imagine the only way this would change is if either teams tightened up considerably (and became adept at dealing with the midfielders as opposed to strikers), or the FPL points system's inherent bias towards forwards and midfielders shifted towards defence.

Great striker, but I still feel he (and Negredo too, thinking about it) will not adapt quickly to the Premier League as it is now.

The thought of someone getting on the end of all those chances Cazorla creates is an enticing prospect, but I feel you already have two good candidates in your squad that can do that next season.

Definitely, he sets up goals and is a decent passer too, but in my eyes he is still predominantly a finisher. Unless they bring a great deal of physicality to their game, the era of that sort of striker making an immediate impact in the PL seems to be over for now. We'll have to wait and see in a few month's time no doubt.

For those looking at Sky game midfield options here is a look at the potential for passing and tackling bonus points earned per game based on last season's matches. It's a simplified calculation (eg if a player averages >60 passes per game then he's given 2 passing bonus points, ie he averages 45 then he's given 1.5) and will obviously overstate the overall numbers but I think it allows for a valid comparison between players:

    Lucas 3.4
    Arteta 3.1
    Schneiderlin 3.0
    Gerrard 2.8
    Carrick 2.8
    Noble (Mark) 2.8
    Yacob 2.7
    Dembélé 2.7
    McCarthy (James) 2.7
    Cazorla 2.6
    Barry 2.5
    Tioté 2.5
    McArthur 2.5
    Mikel 2.5
    Ramsey 2.5
    Sidwell 2.5
    Y Touré 2.4
    Mulumbu 2.4
    Fellaini 2.4
    Osman 2.3
    Cork 2.3
    Sandro 2.3

      Excellent excellent player.

Someone was asking about him a while ago - watched a lot of the games he played in.

While currently there has been a lot of attention on Bony, I'd argue that Van Ginkel was the biggest talent at vitesse. His maturity and intelligence belie his years, he plays like a much more experienced midfielder would. What's staggering is his versatility, imagine a Modric with decent aerial ability and physical presence, and can finish with either feet. He can play on the wing on either side of the striker, in the hole or much deeper as a playmaker or even a ball winning midfielder. Decent pace and acceleration, excellent stamina, and while technically a good dribbler, he doesn't employ it all that much - preferring to pass or make late runs into the box.

Chelsea have a gem on their hands, it would be a real shame if he moved to early and spent most of his time on the bench, I'd have expected him to start every game, if fit, in the Eredivise this season.
