Roberto Martinez made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Everton by returning to former club Wigan to acquire the services of Arouna Kone. The Toffees beat off late interest from Newcastle for the 29-year-old, who rolls up to Goodison on a three-year deal which is believed to have cost the club £5m.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, the Ivorian is determined to get amongst the goals for the Merseysiders as Martinez attempts to improve upon last term’s sixth place finish under David Moyes:

“I have faith in my own ability but I hope that everything goes smoothly and that I can also steer clear of injuries. I think that with the quality of squad Everton has, we will have a good season. I hope to score as many goals as I can next season. Playing for Everton is moving to another level, a slightly higher standard compared to Wigan and so I hope to be on my best form. I really believe in this team and I think we will have a great campaign next season and I can’t wait to make my debut for this club.”

The History

Kone’s career began as a 17-year-old back in his native Ivory Coast, where he notched 17 times in 30 appearances for Rio Sport before Belgian outfit Lierse came calling in 2002. Having racked up 11 strikes in 32 games, he made his way to Holland to turn out for Roda JC. This time round, he lasted a couple of campaigns, notching 26 goals and 14 assists in just 61 matches before catching the eye of Dutch giants PSV.

Kone’s first two years in Eindhoven brought 19 goals and 13 assists from 52 appearances but with injury and illness restricting his game time, he was sold to Spanish club Sevilla in the summer of 2007. Despite shelling out €12m for his services, a combination of injuries, lack of form and training ground rows forced Kone out of favour at Sevilla – a mere goal and assist from 29 appearances over two-and-a-half-years sums up his lack of impact.

Loaned out to German club Hannover 96 midway through the 2009/10, Kone found the net twice in eight matches before returning to his parent club for the start of the next campaign. After featuring once in 2010/11, Kone was loaned out to Levante for the remainder of the season and, with 15 goals and four assists in 34 matches, proved a key player as the minnows clinched a sixth place finish in La Liga.

Signed by Martinez for Wigan last summer, Kone’s impact was instant at the DW – from 34 appearances, he registered 11 goals and five assists, playing a part in 16 of the Latics’ 47 strikes over the season. He has also been selected for the national side on 27 occasions, scoring once and providing a pair of assists.

The Prospects

Much may come down to Martinez’s preferred system of choice in his first season on Merseyside. The Toffees are so familiar with the 4-4-1-1 utilised by David Moyes in recent time but many expect the new man in charge to roll out his preferred 3-4-3 formation as he looks to go introduce a more attacking brand of football. Kone’s versatility means he could fill in on the right of a 3-4-3, which may see him vie with Kevin Mirallas for game time or, more likely, through the centre as a replacement for the misfiring Nikica Jelavic.

A 3-4-3 formation, with Mirallas on the right and Kone central, would likely see many Fantasy managers opt for the Belgian, however, if he’s classified as a midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Alternatively, if Mirallas is listed as a forward, Kone’s appeal looks set to rise considerably – given that Jelavic notched just seven times last term, the Ivorian certainly looks in the driving seat to take up the lone forward role. On the other hand, while Mirallas has the potential to be an out of position option, a repeat of last term’s scenario, where he was classified as a forward yet fielded on the right of a 4-4-1-1, would strike the Belgian off many a Fantasy Watchlist.

Judging by Martinez’s praise, Jelavic certainly has reason to be worried over his game time in the season ahead. In an interview with the Toffees website, the Spaniard spoke highly of the new boy’s capabilities – an indication, perhaps, that he’s set to be fielded centrally for the Toffees next time round.

“He’s got everything that an Evertonian would expect of a striker. The work ethic, the technical ability to score goals – that’s always essential in a striker. But probably the biggest strength that Arouna has is that calmness in front of goal, that composure to be a real reference for the team. His arrival to the Premier League has been a very successful and impressive one. To be able to be himself straight away, someone who copes with the physicality of the game but brings a really strong back-to-goal play in the forward position and with real quality finishing in his make-up. As a player I would say he is a complete footballer at a really good age.”

A price of around 7.0 or 7.5 would bring the former Wigan man into consideration as we construct our pre-season line-ups, while the fixtures also fall in Kone’s favour. With West Brom, Newcastle and Hull all visiting Goodison by Gameweek 9, in addition to trips to Norwich, Cardiff and Villa, the schedule affords Martinez the chance to get off to a successful start. With the likes of Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Steven Pienaar and Mirallas supplying a stream of opportunities from the flanks, Kone could well push on from last term’s tally at the DW to become a key protagonist for the Toffees in the post-Moyes era.

Other than Chelsea if theres a DGW in week 1, does anyone plan on getting 3 players from any 1 side?

I always avoid this week 1 in case someone else hits form and I need to get them in.

Never really heard this discussed on here as a tactic. Is it just me who does it?

        Scary tactic.

Never treble in defence with 2 teams if its your plan.
Good when fixtures are good, but when they turn, you're left with 6 defenders who you'd rather not have.

Spread it and drop one at a time as fixtures change I say.

Fixtures are not actually as important for CS's as you would imagine.

Read "Odds-setters as forecasters: The case of English Football" or anything by Goddard to see the deficiencies of just using fixtures.

Could you give me the gist?

My research last year showed most sides get 2/3 clean sheets at home.

From that, I figured with player roation for home games, I should get both these 2/3's.

Obviously I then change them about based on fixtures to, but on the whole, thats the wise move I think.

Seems like there are so many cut price options for forwards. Are you guys still set on getting Van Persie? I started off last season with Aguero with a little bit of cash in the bank. He got injured and that was the only reason I had RVP from the 2nd week on.

I might go for the mid priced strikers and have a good midfield and a decent defense. Guess I'll have to see how preseason goes though.

At the moment its actually looking easier to get RVP. With some promising cheap forwards being signed, no movement on the Higuan front and Cavani seemingly set for PSG there aren't many expensive strikers that appeal at the moment. Before I was thinking along the lines of Aguero, Cavani and Higuan attack but at the moment RVP + 2 mid priced strikers may be an option.

I wouldn't have thought so, there were doubts over RVP's game time at different stages last season for all sorts of reasons but it never really materialised into rotation (just once I think over Xmas and another time at home to Wigan after an international injury).

FPL wise, who do you think will have the stronger season:

    Carroll or Nolan?

My pick is Nolan: Although 31, he is a player who is adept at being at the right place to score, at the right time. Pace is not an issue for him as his whole game depends on picking off the scraps, he will certainly benefit from knock downs/ons from Carroll as he has shown already. 51 goals across 4 seasons (2 in Championship and 2 in PL) shows that he is a consistent goal scoring mid who is likely to grab at the very least 8 goals this season (emphasis on "the very least!"). A delightful number of goals for a mid price option. WH have had a good season defensively and Nolan should once again benefit with the extra CS points (although a less important consideration given that he will pick up only an extra 6 - 15 points via this method). The fact that he is a poacher and is neither a hit & hope player, or assist machine, indicates that on the games he scores he should bag at least a bonus point if not more (no -PPI for shots missed or less PPI for passing instead of putting the ball in the net himself). Nolan seems to shine with Carroll on the pitch, having struggled when Carroll was out via injury, he reminded us at the end of the season why he was such a good pick at Newcastle with a hat trick for WH against Reading in a 4-2 win (a game in which Carroll did not score but played a crucial part in on pitch).

Carroll: However silly it seems to some, Carroll does seem to be a player who currently has the ambition to play for England in the WC and that should be a motivating factor for him. With the poor service provided by Downing and Kuyt(?) last season from the wings he did not get the crosses onto his head or passes into his feet that he needed. He has not shown anywhere near as strong a goal scoring portfolio as Nolan, however the fact remains that when on form he is seen as a great target man, and for good reason: 6 goals and 4 assists for WH in his last 13 games for the previous season. What do I have against him? RVW. I just feel we have a stronger player on our hand for the third striker spot (arguably with Bony providing strong competition too regardless of a Europa schedule). Carroll once again was provided poor support as Jarvis had a disappointing season to say the least, if Jarvis picks up his form from when he was at Wolves then Carroll may have the chances he needs to score goals on a consistent basis.

Is that for this year in particular or just in general?

I feel even if Nolan is pushed to a price of around £7.5 he can be a strong 4th mid and provide the FPL performances other players of that price have previously failed to deliver (Adam Johnson comes to mind). He may not be a new Michu, but he is consistent and reliable. The safe (but also strong) bet.

I guess the only thing going for them would be West Hams kind first up fixtures and the fact they will be playing together. It might be a decent early option but a lot will depend on prices.

Nolan had a long dry patch last season which is off putting (though I did transfer him in GW38 😎 ) whereas Carroll was in great form at the end. I find end of season form often carries into the new season so I'm leaning towards Carroll.

Nolan ended the season in the best way though!

From what I remember Nolan's form really was dependent on Carroll playing, he only dropped off when Carroll was out injured and the rubbish duo of Carlton Cole and Vaz Te took all the shots themselves and leaving nothing for Nolan to connect with.

I don't understand the Nolan hype. I had him for his Saints, Newcastle, etc run which was great and ditched before his hard fixtures before Christmas. He then didn't score again until what, the final day, and even then it was against an already relegated Reading. So he was good last season for two months, and a big price hike is expected. Seems like an overreaction to what we know can be a bad gw.

From what I remember he only lost his goal scoring prowess whilst Carroll was out injured. A hat trick against Reading can't just be put down to relegation blues imo!

Caroll was out between December to February according to Wiki. Shows you how reliant Nolan is on Carroll as the target man to feed off.

Well that was certainly when his dry spell was, I couldn't believe how little I regretted taking him out. I don't see the value in a 7.5 midfielder who we're saying is completely reliant upon another player to score literally any points at all. If Carroll was back in Feb he still didn't do anything for three months even with him.

Idiotic though it may seem i have a feeling Cardiff will pick up another couple of players and start strongly offensively despite fixtures being against them. Will stay away from our defenders early doors but think Kim bo and Campbell will be the Michu and Lambert of this season.

Well-informed Belgian correspondents are saying that Benteke only wants to join Spurs.

There's been interest from Liverpool, to which the player has said 'no', and Benteke doesn't think he's ready yet for Chelsea and wouldn't get regular games.

His hat-trick v Sunderland that night closed my mini league gap from 30 odd to teens, which lukaku then finished off on the last day after I swapped him when Benteke got sent off v Chelsea. He scored in almost every match in the run in.

I remember around the time I brought him in there was a Remy/Lukaku/Cisse/Benteke dilemma, and I'm glad I went for Christian! Love him now.

I have no idea how I didn't get him, I was probably too busy buying Berbatov/Lukaku/Lambert to notice. It didn't really do too much harm to my rank though 😉

I know it's a simplistic answer but just in case you hadn't considered it: copy all the media files he's created onto your computer and delete it from the iPad to make space for more.

I'm not great with these things but dropbox might be worth a look. Web hosted file saving or something like that.
      Free for about 5 gig
i use it for saving photos from my phone automatically. You can access from anywhere then.
Hope it's what you're looking for mate

Perhaps just saving the files onto an external hard drive via cable ... that should work well.

But be warned to make two copies of any files ... I used a hard drive for my photos and it ended up crashing, losing thousands of photos in the process -- of my little ones, to boot.

I'm no expert either but i think you could probably use iCloud. Essentially it is some server space on the internet where you can store files etc..

Try googling iCloud for more information

Five teams I expect to progress this season...

Chelsea (winners) Arsenal (runners up), Liverpool (4th), Southampton & Aston Villa (mid-table).

Five teams I expect to regress this season...

United (third), City (uefa cup), Everton (bottom 10), West Brom & Swansea (flirting with relegation).

Firstly, Moyes isn't Ferguson. Old Trafford is going to feel strange for a while and I do not believe for one second that this won't have an effect on the pitch.

I wouldn't dare to predict Utd this year; you could obviously be right.

I see the Arsenal and 'Pool predictions as much bolder ... not sure I see the basis of their improvement (yet, of course).

Secondly, Arsenal finished like a train last season. Admittedly, they had a kind enough run in but they could do no more than dismiss who they came up against. If they finally open the biscuit tin and get Higuain and A.N Other, they could prove to be the real deal.

And as for Liverpool, I'm feeling that Rodgers is shaping a pretty decent outfit there. The imminent loss of Suarez will be more of a help than a hindrance to him imo.

What do we think the role of Frank Lampard will be next season under Mourinho?
Regular starter? Most appearances from the bench? Somewhere in the middle?
Seems to be a lot of competition for the '2' in the 4-2-3-1

i say he'll get as many games as his legs can handle, but might be preferred for bigger UCL matches, where they need his leadership and consistency.

There has been a lot of debate over the past weeks deciding if the EL will affect the Swans performance in the BPL. I decided to look at how the EL matches affected Newcastle results in the BPL, as like the Swans they have a small squad with not much depth (imo).

Note: I looked at BPL matches before and after the EL.

In 2012 Newcastle Won 4 matches, with 2 clean sheets from these wins, lost 6 and drew 5. It is worth noting that in the group stage Pardew used a mostly a second side team in the EL, saving the best for the BPL, although he would use some of his first side team. For example one of Ba or Cisse always seemed to play in the EL (I didn’t look at every team sheet). Still despite this rotation the results weren't that amazing compared to the previous season. Some of the matches were difficult and although they beat Spurs, they lost to Man U and Chelsea but did quite well to draw with Liverpool and Everton. But they did struggle against sides of their capability or even lower. They drew with Reading and Villa, whilst losing at home to Swansea and West Ham and away losses at Southampton and Fulham, although they beat Wigan 3-0.

In 2013 Pardew tried to find more depth and looked to France for help. They managed to reach the QF in the EL losing to Benfica. In this period they won 3 matches, with one clean sheet from those wins, but they lost 5 matches. There were some tough matches, losing to Spurs and Man C but they lost to Wigan away and got smashed 3-0 by Sunderland on their home turf, a few days after the EL exploits were over. However they did manage to beat Southampton, Stoke and Fulham (all at home).

Overall it is hard to say if having a small squad in Europe does affect your when in the BPL. There are many factors you have to take into account and to be honest I haven't gone into that much detail. I haven't really properly analysed fixture difficulty at the time, nor had a look at every team sheet from the relative BPL and EL matches.

But what I can say is that Newcastle Won 7 matches, drew 5 matches and lost 11 matches, either before or after a EL matches. Bearing in mind Newcastle lost an extra 8 matches there is evidence to suggest the EL did affect them. However just because it affected Newcastle doesn't mean it will affect Swansea or will it?

imo, it's down to the squad depth to challenge a number of competitions, and the Manager's preference of which tourney to be prioritized. Factor in the travels across Europe and player's fatigue/injuries. For an instance, Chelsea was lucky enough to be able to have a big squad and field the likes of Lampard and Terry mainly in the UCL, plus having Rafa on board who always have a knack in knock-out competitions do play a big part in their recent success. Arsenal OTOH, has always fielded the youngsters in League Cup and in the past, second-string players in the FA Cup - a kind of luxury that i don't think Swansea will be able to do this season.

It's worth mentioning that Fulham in 2009/2010 managed to reach the EL final, and they finished 12th in the league (they got 7th place the season before) - not as bad as NEW's recent performance but still i think playing in Europe has an effect on EPL teams. Maybe you should look at Spur's BPL matches before and after the EL too - you'll noticed that a certain Spurs defence line-up is used for the EL. The key for us, FPL-wise, is to get the right players from SWA who can perform in the League despite their UL commitment.

Anyway, how does one get a fantasy game going when only two teams are playing? Isn't it a bit like a fantasy WBC/WBA World Heavyweight Boxing unification fight?
