Our fourth article focussing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List is rolled out this evening. With the Goalkeepers analysis followed by articles on the Budget and Mid-Price backline options, we this time turn to the premium priced defenders on offer for the season ahead:

Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge means the Chelsea backline is currently a source of uncertainty for Fantasy managers. While Petr Cech is nailed-on in goal and Ashley Cole (6.5) looks certain to retain the left-back role, the attacking potential offer up by both David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic would be preferable – with both players setting us back 6.5, though, it’s very much a case of “wait and see” over the pre-season. There’s the hope that Cesar Azpilicueta, at 6.0, can nail down the right-back berth – having produced six assists in his debut season, the Spaniard’s contribution down the flank could prosper in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Alternatively, Mourinho could reinstall the similarly priced John Terry (6.0) as a regular at the heart of his defence once again.

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines has been handed the highest valuation of any defender after racking up 177 points in the season gone by. At 7.5, the Everton full-back could be moved to the left of Roberto Martinez’s midfield in a 3-4-3 for the season ahead – while this would undoubtedly further his points potential, Seamus Coleman, at 5.0, could offer superior value in spite of Baines’ spot-kicks and set-piece duties. Indeed, a mooted move to United would likely see him stripped of penalties, with a decrease in corners and set-pieces also on the cards should he join up with David Moyes again. Surprisingly, despite his superb season, Baines would have ranked as the fifth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System (BPS) – he was top for bonus in the old EA PPI based system, by comparison.

Liverpool trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique all come in at 6.0. All three exceed 130+ points last time out, with Enrique just eight points behind Johnson despite playing seven games less – of the trio, it was Agger who would have finished highest in new BPS, though. When applied to last season’s games, the Dane finished third top for defenders in the BPS, with Johnson in ninth – this could well be significant, given Agger picked up just eight bonus points in the old system in 2012/13. A regular role for the 5.0 priced Kolo Toure would see many set their targets on the Ivorian, though, while both Liverpool keepers also come in at 5.5.

Vincent Kompany (6.5) remains the costliest backline option at City, with full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy both coming in at 6.0. The question remains whether the Etihad side will remain as resolute at the back with new boss Manuel Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive – if City fail to mirror the 18 clean sheet returns and mere 34 goals against harvested under Roberto Mancini’s final year at the helm, Matija Nastasic (5.5) is a less-expensive gamble.

Elsewhere in Manchester, United have four defenders priced at 6.0 or over. Providing Baines doesn’t make the Old Trafford switch, Patrice Evra looks the most reliable in terms of game time – the Frenchman remains firmly ahead of Alex Buttner in the left-back pecking order and while he’s the costliest backline option for David Moyes’ side at 6.5, his four goals and six assists in 2012/13 highlight Evra’s attacking appeal. Intriguingly, similar to Baines, he doesn’t far quite as well in the BPS – he was ranked second for PPI last year but would have been seventh highest backline option under the BPS scoring system. As witnessed towards the final few months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, Phil Jones’ (6.0) versatility could prove crucial, with the former Blackburn man offering the Red Devils options at right-back, centre-half and central midfield but we’ve yet to see where he fits into Moyes’ plans. Rafael and Nemanja Vidic also come in at 6.0 – the right-back could well be a secure starter under the new manager and if Vidic can keep injury-free, he’s another who could thrive under the new Bonus Point System.

Finally, Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are the last two defenders in our analysis. The former’s consistency of starts, in addition to six assists from the previous year harvested 116 points but, at 6.0, he’s likely to convince few Fantasy managers into taking a punt, with better value available elsewhere. Vertonghen started last season at 6.5 but has risen to 7.0 this time round, having produced five goals and three assists in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane. The Belgian’s all-round game looks set to be significantly rewarded by the new Bonus Points System – not only would he have finished top defender and number one Tottenham player (by a considerable margin over Gareth Bale) in 2012/13, Vertonghen would have been second overall only to Robin Van Persie in the BPS rankings.

Indeed, the comparison with Bale is particularly key and suggests the Welshman may struggle to earn maximum bonus with such regularity – a crucial factor when deciding on the armband. Last season Bale bettered his team-mate by 709 points to 479 points in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and subsequently racked up 50 bonus points to Vertonghen’s 12 but under the new system, the Belgian’s all-round game see him come out top by 289 points to 209. We’ll have a more detailed analysis of the brand new Bonus Points System in an upcoming article.

        I agree with this.

Plus looking at Kun's output last year with just Tevez and Balo to keep him company really worries me.

I feel safer taking my chances with RVP now.

Also as a Liverpool fan, I'd quite appreciate some stability, and would like Rodgers to stay.

They'll probably promote from within again, Roura maybe?

... Yeah as soon as they appoint Doosra as the new Pool manager 😉

Think about it, Rodgers took over from Martinez at Swansea, at Pool he's not yet made them a top 5 team and even his best player was signed by Dalglish. I will say that Coutinho was a great signing, balanced out by backpass Allen.

I suppose I didn't want to seem like I disliked him, I have nothing against the guy at all. But you're right, he's done nothing yet. I'm still of the belief the Sturridge won't go the distance. Coutinho was a massive risk, he's had consistency issues all through his career. If BR gets that out of him then all credit to him but the risk is there.

I'm largely towards him, tbf. Certainly I thinks he 'deserves' time to prove himself ... but his handling of Suarez and his many transgressions has me thinking he's weak in re: "superstar" (ugh) management.

Yeah that would be the biggest issue for me, Suarez is a big name and he's struggling holding onto him, can't see him holding onto Barcelona players. Then you have the same issue of signing "potential" but no out and out stars.

On the contrary, he 'won' presence in the PL year-after-year with virtually no budget and while being able to retain his best players (Baines, Fellaini).

But Moyes got Everton to a pretty damn good league position on a shoe string budget. So they decided he'd suit United, I hope they're right but it doesn't mean he was my first pick for United. I'm not sure, possibly promotion from within although I think they need a fresh perspective, The Germans have their style twigged, they need someone with new ideas, not another Pep employee.

you say that... but alot feel that RVP is priced out,
Question marks over aguero's game time,
        Suarez suspended,
        Rooney - nuff said.

Take those 3 out and the 'big men' catergory goes to include lambert, sturridge, giroud, berbatov etc.

Forwards are by far the hardest commodity to decide where the dosh should be spent and is where alot of points will be won and lost - more than other seasons methinks.

Yeah, I like having a big name striker, but once I've decided RVP is too expensive to fit in as I definitely want Bale who else is there?
I don't fancy Aguero with his new signings as competition, I'd have Rooney at Chelsea, but not United, I'd love Higuain at Arsenal if that happened, and Suarez is suspended, there are no other strikers above £9m

Therefore Sturridge is my big striker, and while i'm not sure i'm happy with that, it looks like staying that way for now.

I mean RVP is so dependable, but I just can't justify the outlay on him. I resisted him up until GW4 or so last year, before realising he was still must have, it may be the same again.

Look at Negredo's scoring record. Pellegrini has signed him himself. Aguero choked majorly last season. Negredo also likely to feed off his creativity. Can only be an out and out striker. He'll also, should be anywho, cheaper.

        Trust me, I'm not panicking.

Unless you know Pellegrini personally i don't see how you can know HE signed him. Im not questioning the fact he will be an out and out striker just his % of games. Aguero is an established fan favourite and virtually any club in world football would sign him up if they could. If Aguero stays injury free he will be a steal at 11.

Im just saying at most of the top clubs the scouts and the money men seem to do all the work then ask the manager if he fancies the player and of course they will say yes just to have a larger squad. In this case Pellegrini probably did have a lot to do with it im just trying to highlight that nobody 'knows' anything behind the scenes at these clubs, the media least of all most of the time!

Loving the Deulofeu pick, want him myself but I believe we'll have to wait until Kone does nothing and Delboy gets some real gametime to show his talent.

Just read Triggerlips' sticky on JRod v Lambert.
Lots of mythical comments on that one.
A few saying in later games, Lambert dropped wide and deep while JRod played as the striker.
A few saying JRod stats were better late on.

All I have to say is Comparison Tool. Lambert. Rodriguez. Last 6 Gameweeks. Compare.

JRod: out wide, dropping deep, loses most stats, loses most vital stats.
Lambert: all central positions, not much sitting deep, wins the stats, wins the main stats.

JRod still the option for budget attacks. Attack isn't the area for budget stuff in my book.

    Hello DZ'ers.

Was just having a convo about Rooney.

There is a lot of talk-certainly on here anyway that they only have him in their teams if he makes the switch to Chelsea. As a Chelsea fan myself I would certainly like that to happen.

But what if he (and most probably likely) doesn't?

While I can appreciate that RVP has shifted into a more prominent role at Utd, I'm curious as to why Moyes would continually say he's not for sale and then either have him as a sub or just plonk him in midfield......

Moyes played with two up top at Everton so why can he not do the same at Utd?

I know what RVP brings to the table-i think we all do so no need to cover old ground, but I think people are dismissing Rooney's role within the team quite a bit given Utd are insisting he's not going anywhere.

    Some food for thought.

My issue isn't where/if he'll play (@ Utd), but whether his heart will be in it.

He's a 'heart' player and tepid feelings towards the club will, I would predict, produce tepid results on the pitch.

My issue is if he'll keep Kagawa from playing CAM where he's best. I don't think I want an unhappy Rooney over Kagawa, it'd be wasteful to just try and keep him happy.

      Agree with Eric and Somalian.

Saying Rooney is a back-up for RVP one day and the he's not for sale must surely be confusing everyone.

An unhappy Rooney occupying Kagawa's favourite spot is likely to detract from both their scores.

Sanchez looks like he's got it, thats the general consensus.

Demel, McCartney and Tomkins all miss out.

O'Brien is too expensive as a fantasy option really, so if he was dropped for someone else it'd be better, but Collins looks like the cheap link for now, its just Tomkins presents more challenge to Collins than McCartney does to Rat

    Good morning all from Seoul,
So basically I brought in Baines last night and then after reading about how his Bonus Points wouldn't be so big in the upcoming season with the new Bonus Points system I'm having another rethink.
Add in the fact he is unlikely to be as dominant as last season too.. errm..

    Anyway now I'm on..

    Boruc, Foster,

    Collins, Bassong, Mertesacker, Baines, Chester

    Hazard, Bale, Yaya, Adam, Thomas

    Giroud, Rodrigez, Lukaku..

    1.0 in bank..

This some of the cheaper players rotate really well..

Lukaku I will keep a watch on..

    Any thoughts early doors..

From what I've read a clever early transfer for Cardiff. Watched by several big teams who appear to have been too slow out of the blocks.

A goal scorer. Just remains to be seen if his ability there transfers to the Prem. But that can be true of even the biggest names.

A target man such as Carroll for West Ham? This time? At 5.5 and for the Championship's champions, they need a good forward. I just want to know if 5.5 is underpricing him in order to see if I get him as my 3rd striker. Do you see him scoring more or less than 10 goals this season?

More over the season if he gets the service. Their early fixtures are a nightmare though.
Maybe best to watch for the first few and jump aboard if he is scoring despite fixtures.

Oh so you see him as good value if so? I personally have NO other option if I am to have RvP,Bale,Sturridge, and Silva in the same team. I reckon Silva will regain some form under the new coach so he'll be a good pick especially with the rotation madness with Aguero,Jovetic, and Negredo. The best 5.5 mill or less forward for the beginning of the season for you would be whom?

Anelka WBA or Vaz Te West Ham. Both the same price and with better early fixtures.
Would give you a better chance for the early period imo LL.

Will probably bottle it and put Hazard back in but rolling with Silva instead unless Chelsea double is announced.

    Mignolet* / 4.0
    Collins / M.Turner / Chester / Parr / B.Turner
    Bale / Silva / Walcott / Sissoko / Thomas
    RVP / Lambert / Aspas

Mignolet assuming he'll be first choice, if not simply replace with Reina since they are same price.

Sissoko I think will have doubters but Newcastle no Europa this time around, have something to prove after a horrific 12/13 season, attacking and they have an appealing opening set of fixtures.

Lambert atm but may replace with Berbatov, if I brought in Berba I'd prob swap Sissoko out for G.Ramirez

Obviously not much spent in defence but got a Liverpool keeper, Collins and M.Turner who are solid cheapies.

Anyone watched any of the new men on YouTube?
I watch strikers goals to check out the style of player and their pace, physique, positioning etc.

    Aspas seems a wide man.
Bony looks an all round striker with finishing ability who will lead the line.
Cornelius really shocked me. Headers like bullets. Expected that from a big man, but he actually had pace and skill too. Looks like a free kick taker too. Good left foot. £5.5m may be good when fixtures are right.
Wolfswinkel seems a penalty box predator with penalties and pace. Actually looks not bad too.
Negredo basically a striker who gets in the 6 yard box a lot.
Jovetic seems to score his goals from 18 yards odd. Passes them in a lot but not in the danger zone too often.

Aspas seems an OOP the wrong way to me.
Jovetic has some of that too.

Cornelius might surprise a few. Seems miles better pick at 5.5 than Anelka to me.

Aspas is Downing's replacement at Liverpool, but should cut inside a lot and could do well. Obviosuly Sturridge is a better pick playing centrally, but Aspas could offer better value at only 7.0

Negredo and Jovetic are both 'wait and see' options IMO to check game time and starting positions, either could be worth it though.

Cornelius is one i had my eye on, but I won't be starting with him due to Cardiff's fixtures.

RvW a serious option too, could be better than Snodgrass

I also like Bony, obviously it was only the dutch league, but he looks a beast, again though, Swansea's fixtures put me off.
