Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Our fourth article focussing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List is rolled out this evening. With the Goalkeepers analysis followed by articles on the Budget and Mid-Price backline options, we this time turn to the premium priced defenders on offer for the season ahead:

Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge means the Chelsea backline is currently a source of uncertainty for Fantasy managers. While Petr Cech is nailed-on in goal and Ashley Cole (6.5) looks certain to retain the left-back role, the attacking potential offer up by both David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic would be preferable – with both players setting us back 6.5, though, it’s very much a case of “wait and see” over the pre-season. There’s the hope that Cesar Azpilicueta, at 6.0, can nail down the right-back berth – having produced six assists in his debut season, the Spaniard’s contribution down the flank could prosper in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Alternatively, Mourinho could reinstall the similarly priced John Terry (6.0) as a regular at the heart of his defence once again.

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines has been handed the highest valuation of any defender after racking up 177 points in the season gone by. At 7.5, the Everton full-back could be moved to the left of Roberto Martinez’s midfield in a 3-4-3 for the season ahead – while this would undoubtedly further his points potential, Seamus Coleman, at 5.0, could offer superior value in spite of Baines’ spot-kicks and set-piece duties. Indeed, a mooted move to United would likely see him stripped of penalties, with a decrease in corners and set-pieces also on the cards should he join up with David Moyes again. Surprisingly, despite his superb season, Baines would have ranked as the fifth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System (BPS) – he was top for bonus in the old EA PPI based system, by comparison.

Liverpool trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique all come in at 6.0. All three exceed 130+ points last time out, with Enrique just eight points behind Johnson despite playing seven games less – of the trio, it was Agger who would have finished highest in new BPS, though. When applied to last season’s games, the Dane finished third top for defenders in the BPS, with Johnson in ninth – this could well be significant, given Agger picked up just eight bonus points in the old system in 2012/13. A regular role for the 5.0 priced Kolo Toure would see many set their targets on the Ivorian, though, while both Liverpool keepers also come in at 5.5.

Vincent Kompany (6.5) remains the costliest backline option at City, with full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy both coming in at 6.0. The question remains whether the Etihad side will remain as resolute at the back with new boss Manuel Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive – if City fail to mirror the 18 clean sheet returns and mere 34 goals against harvested under Roberto Mancini’s final year at the helm, Matija Nastasic (5.5) is a less-expensive gamble.

Elsewhere in Manchester, United have four defenders priced at 6.0 or over. Providing Baines doesn’t make the Old Trafford switch, Patrice Evra looks the most reliable in terms of game time – the Frenchman remains firmly ahead of Alex Buttner in the left-back pecking order and while he’s the costliest backline option for David Moyes’ side at 6.5, his four goals and six assists in 2012/13 highlight Evra’s attacking appeal. Intriguingly, similar to Baines, he doesn’t far quite as well in the BPS – he was ranked second for PPI last year but would have been seventh highest backline option under the BPS scoring system. As witnessed towards the final few months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, Phil Jones’ (6.0) versatility could prove crucial, with the former Blackburn man offering the Red Devils options at right-back, centre-half and central midfield but we’ve yet to see where he fits into Moyes’ plans. Rafael and Nemanja Vidic also come in at 6.0 – the right-back could well be a secure starter under the new manager and if Vidic can keep injury-free, he’s another who could thrive under the new Bonus Point System.

Finally, Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are the last two defenders in our analysis. The former’s consistency of starts, in addition to six assists from the previous year harvested 116 points but, at 6.0, he’s likely to convince few Fantasy managers into taking a punt, with better value available elsewhere. Vertonghen started last season at 6.5 but has risen to 7.0 this time round, having produced five goals and three assists in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane. The Belgian’s all-round game looks set to be significantly rewarded by the new Bonus Points System – not only would he have finished top defender and number one Tottenham player (by a considerable margin over Gareth Bale) in 2012/13, Vertonghen would have been second overall only to Robin Van Persie in the BPS rankings.

Indeed, the comparison with Bale is particularly key and suggests the Welshman may struggle to earn maximum bonus with such regularity – a crucial factor when deciding on the armband. Last season Bale bettered his team-mate by 709 points to 479 points in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and subsequently racked up 50 bonus points to Vertonghen’s 12 but under the new system, the Belgian’s all-round game see him come out top by 289 points to 209. We’ll have a more detailed analysis of the brand new Bonus Points System in an upcoming article.

The new BPS system has replaced the EA PPI system to make it more reasonable and reward certain players who are not rewarded rightly for their performances, i.e, the defenders and the deep-lying midfielders. However, there has been a right apprehension that such players will be rewarded in only 0-0 draws and 1-0 wins (I'm not counting 0-1 losses, because the opponent defenders will have a bigger say due to the cleansheet BP points), merely the BP points due to goal scored (+8 for a striker) will mostly exceed the other performance BP points (+1 for Recoveries, +1 for CBIs, etc.) . Hence, I decided it would be interesting to see from last year's data which team had the most 0-0 draws and 1-0 wins. (For the Championship teams, I'm NOT assuming the Championship data, as it would not be a perfect reflection of what we expect from them in the Premier League).

    (Team, Total, (0-0 draws, 1-0 wins)) :

    1. Arsenal- 11 (2,9)
    2. Aston Villa- 3 (2,1)
    3. Chelsea- 7 (3,4)
    4. Everton- 6 (3,3)
    5. Fulham - 5 (2,3)
    6. Liverpool - 8 (5,3)
    7. Manchester City- 8 (3,5)
    8. Manchester United - 4 (0,4)
    9. Newcastle United - 4 (2,2)
    10. Norwich - 8 (5,3)
    11. Southampton - 5 (3,2)
    12. Stoke City - 9 (6,3)
    13. Sunderland - 8 (4,4)
    14. Swansea - 7 (6,1)
    15. Tottenham Hotspur- 6 (2,4)
    16. West Brom - 3 (2,1)
    17. West Ham- 9 (5,4)

As we see, Arsenal comes first with 11 such results, followed by Stoke City and West Ham with 9 each. A lot of other teams including Manchester City, Liverpool and Sunderland come third with 8 such results each. Also taking about 0-0s, Stoke City and Swansea come first with 6 each 0-0s.

However, it is wrong to come to a conclusion from such aggregate data. There are teams whose 0-0s and 1-0s increased in the later half of the season (Arsenal, Swansea), decreased in the later half of the season (Stoke City) and was consistent throughout the season (Liverpool, West Ham).

Now, the whole discussion revolves around choosing the right teams for BAP Magnet defenders and defensive midfielders. The above list throws us Arsenal, City, Liverpool from the big teams and Swansea, Stoke City and West Ham from the mid-table teams. I would personally add Norwich and Southampton to that list, as I expect them to rely on narrow results this season, and defensively tighten up, as well.

    1. Arsenal- We have had a 'Koscielny V/S Vermaelen' discussion already, and with varying conclusions. My pick of the 2 is Koscielny, as both of them had a similar BAP/minute ratio last season (0.077 vs 0.088), but Koscielny does have a markedly greater goal threat. As for defensive midfielders, Arteta at 7.0 is quite interesting, as he still has PK duties in his locker. Won't be surprised to see Arteta rack up 150+ points this season.

    2. City - Nastasic will be man to look out for. Played 700 minutes less than Kompany, and yet has a similar BPS/minute ratio, and we get him at a million less. Let's all hope he will be nailed on. Richards is another high who generally has high BPS numbers, but I don't think he will be nailed-on. Again, I would personally pick Nasty over both the fullbacks Clichy and Zabaleta. As for the defensive midfielders, I wouldn't have either of Yaya or Fernandinho as I would rather spend 8.0 on a guy who will give me consistent attacking returns (Mirallas, Fellaini).

    3. Liverpool - Agger has to be man. I would say his price of 6.0 is kind on him, and being the only nailed-on CB for Liverpool, I wouldn't think his minutes would decrease, at all. Johnson and Enrique's BPS/min ratio is surprisingly low, given they scored and assisted. However, I would still buy GJ out of the 3 - I would say he was unlucky with his attacking returns last season, and I expect him to improve this season. Gerrard would have been in my list last season, but there are far better attacking midfielders at that price, and I expect Gerrard to play far less minutes this season.

    4. Swansea - Maintaning the pattern, another strongly-built CB stands out- Chico. Actually, he is my favourite Swansea defender FPL-wise at the moment. Wouldn't pay 5.5 for Rangel, and the Taylor-Davies corrundum makes both players unattractive. Chico's BAP/min ratio is far better than Williams, and I expect a Europa-knackered Swansea to churn out many more 0-0s this season. Not having him at the start of the season, but he will be on my watchlist. Among the midfielders, nobody catches my fancy, again.

    5. Stoke City- Sadly, nobody for me. Shawcross was the PPI magnet, not so much in BPS. Moreover, Muniesa's flexibility as CB/LB gives Hughes a chance to rest Huth, Shawcross and Pieters for any odd game. A strict no-no from me. Midfielders? I wish Charlie Adam was 5.0.

    6. West Ham- Yes, it is Collins. He had a BAP/minute ratio of 0.060, quite decent among mid-priced teams, and remarkable given his lack of attacking returns. Doosra says that Tomkins will replace Collins, but I don't think it will happen early this season. At a juicy 4.5, definitely worth having in your team. As for DMs, there is West Ham's Arteta: Noble. Could still be a decent pick at 5.5

... And now comes the teams worth looking at:

    7. Norwich- They have had some remarkable home wins against top teams, some remarkable big losses against weak teams, but they have been improving. There has been a lot of Turner-love on the site, but since I have been looking from the BPS point of view, Bassong is surely going to be my pick. Another big CB, Bassong actually comes with a better goalscoring record than Chico, Collins or Nastasic. Moreover, his BAP/min ratio has been remarkably more at home than away (97 vs 65), so an ideal pick for a home-away rotation. A tad costly, but there is always Turner for stingy managers. As for DMs, Fer could be decent (we all saw his eye for goal in the U21s), but I would still have Snodgrass over Fer in my GW1 team.

    8. Southampton - The FPL darlings of the season. Yoshida, Clyne and Shaw have similar BPS/min ratio, but I would personally have Clyne of the 3 (Shaw supposedly has some fitness issues, and Yoshida could face some rotation with Fonte in the mix). As it comes to DMs, I am pretty much sure Schneiderlin will get 3 BPs in all the 0-0 games, given his super consistent BP accumulation. Probably has been priced 5.5 due to the new BPS system. Wanyama could be interesting at 5.0 as well.

... That was a little long ramble. Hope it will help you.

You should read my comment closely, I have similarly said that the BPS will mainly matter in 0-0s and 1-0s, based on which I have had the whole discussion on.

Even last season, in 0-0s, Arteta, Schneiderlin, Shawcross & Co. got the BAPs a lot of times, but this year, I think there will be a consistent pattern.

Relax. No need to take it personally.

You may have the best individual talent, but you need a team that works together to win trophies.

Call Fergie Hoodini if you must because imo United have had inferior squads to Arsenal, Chelsea and City last 3-4 seasons but have still somehow managed to win trophies.

No one's doubting the individual quality embellished in your squad. The challenge is whether or not pellegrini can tactically get it right and maximising the potential of his squad. If he does that, they can't be stopped in the epl.

Bellamy and Brady seem ok to me, Both have recent experience in the top flight, Bellamy-Liverpool Brady-Man United and Brady fits into that 5th sub role, 4 goals and 13 assists in 32 apps last season looks pretty good to me.

well, considering his limited budget, it's fine but you won't believe how better your team looks once you sell RVP

Arteta predicted to do well with new BPS, and on pens. Will play two out of three of Bellamy, Gayle and Brady each week.

Rukawa runs the Vietnamese United forum. Been very busy with that I suppose. The only way to trigger a comeback is for Rooney to have a controversial assist given on FPL.

I've been great Newman. Since we last spoke ages ago, graduated, got a new job, visited new places, met exciting people, it's been good. Recently moved to San Fran for a new role. So...I'll definitely be active in the deadzone.

FPL-wise, had a horrible season last year. My adamency with the no-RVP policy killed my season. Ended up with sub 100k.

How've you been? Man, I still can't believe this. I feel like AK or someone else is playing a hoax on me.

Newman, can you confirm which club you support?

I've been really good. Life has been good, and I'm happy. Just gotta find the balance with this crazy game!

Thank you! Wow you've been lurking last season? 😉

This is where I need to learn to draw the line between club support and FPL. Just couldn't tolerate RVP moving to United sealed the deal for me. The jealousy was too much. 🙁 I'm still not over it yet, I think.

That's neat Newman, I'm glad it all worked for the best.

                    ouch man, bitterness kills!

It did work out! I'm glad you are doing so well, yourself.

Bale will stay for this year. His contract would make his departure too expensive. Next year hes gone, whether we make Champions league or not. ( and we won't)

Agree Newman, think Bale being 22 helps. He can easily wait another year to move to a big club. AVB and Bale have clicked as if they're a match made in heaven.

Meanwhile, if he can continue to weave the magic, I don't see why Spurs can't finish in the top 4 Newman. Even without a striker signing. Also with Paulinho in that midfield, you've got pace, skill, aggression, temperament, experience, talent. Definitely top 4 material (even top 3 with a striker signing)

If we sign even a decent striker, agreed. As is, I don't think so. Chelsea is gonna be amazing this year. City could go either way, and United will not lose much ground. That makes it between us and Arsenal. I hope the Paulinho/Dembele/Sandro midfield is enough to push for top 4, but I just don't see it if we can get another consistent source of goals.

I will say this....if Kaboul returns to form....look out. That is an impressive backline if he plays as he did two years ago.

I'm quietly confident for us this season. But then again, so I was last season too only to get drowned in the managerial merry-go-round. So...fingers crossed.

Kaboul was a beast. I doubt we'll get to see that season's form again though. See what happened to Walker after that one amazing season.

Oh yeah. walker had some woeful moments. I think Kaboul has a good head on his shoulders, though. Would not be surprised to see him return to form.

What a nightmare Roman really is. I mean, worth it, you could have never won Champions league without him, but think how good the team would be if Mourinho never left. Or for that matter, if they had gotten any consistency with the manager.

Indeed. But...things have changed since Newman. That was a cosy little competition we had and probably generated more quality and excitement from the little crowd. But now that the comps have paved way for more participants, I guess its not so cosy any more.

I miss those days too! Think if we email Fuz, he might be coerced into a return. I hope 😉

Its similar to what I said above: its the cost of success. Its not gonna be as special as it was, but its worth it to have more people involved.

MBiwa and Staylor well only know in beginning of season, though Pardew indicated an important role for the former this season..so 60-70% i think.

Chester should start for Hull, the signings are there but Chester is expected to keep his place..90% maybe

    Rate myt eam advice.

Seems that when people put up a RMT if it contains any differential players they are told to swap them out for one of the forum template players.

My own advice would be go with your own ideas , there plenty of good players , that are hardly mentioned here, dont be afraid to pick them , none of us can see into the future Dont let the forum talk you out of them

haha i know , i put Gerrard in a team earlier ....................Nice team but replace Gerrard with Hazard they all said, ironic thing is most pople will be forced into using their wildcards after a few weeks

I especially don't get the Hazard love. Both Walcott and Cazolra outscored him last season.

100% agree with this. It's useful when people tell you a player is injured or out of favour or something, but otherwise the general opinion seems to be that only certain players are acceptable, based on nothing more than gut feel.

This is my thinking, I think Westwood will be no.1. Risky though, maybe Boruc/Speroni is the sensible solution.

Anyone without RvP at the start will change their minds after a gameweek or two. He's essential. Thoughts?

I agree with you! He seems like a differential here though, due to this premium price and poor fixtures

Can't see myself starting without him. Also, to get him in after a couple of GW's would probably require big changes to the rest of your squad.

No one is essential. Man U have poor fixtures and a new boss. Who knows what will happen.

RVP is also insanely expensive. 3 million more than Aguero, 3.5 more that Rooney, these could well be the direct competition, leading strikers at the other 2 biggest clubs. That extra money can turn an average player into a big hitter and significantly strengthen the entire squad.

if he continues as the two previous seasons, you will soon lag behind not having him

he managed the switch from Arse/Wenger → United/SAF seamlessly, so do you think he will be any worse off with Moyes?
