Scout Report – Stevan Jovetic

Last Friday saw Man City make a couple of significant moves in the summer transfer market. Having acquired Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla earlier in the day, Manuel Pellegrini added to his forward options by snapping up Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina in a deal reported to be in the region of £22m. The 23-year-old Montenegro international is the club’s fourth signing of the close-season, following Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Negredo to the Etihad as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his first-team ahead of his debut season at the helm:

The subject of plenty interest over the summer, Jovetic is thought to have rejected the advances of both Arsenal and Juventus to join up at the Etihad. Speaking to the club’s official website, he revealed that City’s long-term pursuit was key to his decision, with City centre-half Matija Nastasic also playing a part in persuading him to make the move to the Premier League:

“Manchester City has wanted me for a long time, more than everyone else. They have a big project here and are always fighting for the Champions League and Premier League. This is the reason I came here. I also spoke with Nastasic who tells me good things about Manchester and the players and everything here. He sent me messages every week telling me to come. Now I am here and look forward to playing with him every week.”

The History

Starting his career as a 16-year-old for Partizan Belgrade, Jovetic produced 13 goals and 10 assists over 51 league games between 2006 and 2008, with a further 10 goals arriving in 10 European and domestic cup matches. His performances caught the eye of Fiorentina, with La Viola splashing out £8m for Jovetic’s services in May 2008.

The six foot one forward’s first season in Serie A was a transitional one, however, with just two goals and a pair of assists delivered from 29 matches. Jovetic stepped up a level in 2009/10, with six goals and 10 assists from 29 appearances, but his progress was halted the next year after a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out for the entire 2010/11 campaign. Returning from injury, he racked up 27 goals and 11 assists over 58 Serie A matches in his final couple of seasons at the club.

On the international stage, Jovetic notched twice in six appearances for the Montenegro Under 21s and has turned out for the senior side on 27 occasions, finding the net 10 times.

The Prospects

Mainly utilised as a forward in a 3-5-2 formation at Fiorentina last term, Jovetic is a versatile type who has the ability to play in a number of positions under Pellegrini. While fellow new boy Negredo is a more one-dimensional, typical centre-forward, the Montenegro international summed up his all-round game by saying:

“I’m a forward who is good in one-on-one situations. That’s my best quality and I think my best years are ahead of me. I have played in a lot of systems. I can play as a striker, behind the striker or on the left. I think and I hope I can score between 15 and 20 goals in all competitions this season.”

Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system should prove beneficial to Jovetic, then, but with Aguero, Negredo, David Silva and Jesus Navas all vying for the four advanced roles, in addition to the options provided by Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko, rest and rotation will surely come into effect.

With both Negredo and Sergio Aguero perceived as more natural goalscorers, it’s unlikely that Jovetic would get the nod to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 formation, for example, with a role in “the hole” or even wide left a possibility. His trickery in possession and eye for a killer pass may be more suited to a more withdrawn, playmaker role, thus reducing his appeal as a Fantasy prospect –indeed, as mentioned in the Negredo Scout Report, Aguero could still be the forward to earn most game time under Pellegrini, due to his ability to play either of the central roles up top.

Both new boys have yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, though a price of 9.5 looks likely for Jovetic and Negredo in Fantasy Premier League – less than Aguero but clearly more than the 7.5 priced Dzeko, who looks forced further down the pecking order on the back of Friday’s business. At that price, Negredo would likely be the better value due to his advanced role though much depends on just how much Pellegrini plans to utilise the depth of his squad over all competitions – it may well be that Fantasy managers are faced with the same dilemma posed by Roberto Mancini, where we’re anxiously awaiting the team sheets every weekend.

At present, then, it’s hard to see past Aguero as the man most likely in terms of security, though the remaining pre-season games will hopefully give us a window into the new manager’s thinking. With home games against Newcastle and Cardiff and a trip to Hull in the opening three, the platform is certainly there for Pellegrini’s side to rack up the goals and get their season off to a quick-fire start as they look to reclaim the title from neighbours United.

Team too risky or is it okay?

    Foster · Boruc
    Mertesacker · Collins · M Turner · Shaw · Chester
    Bale · Hazard · Coutinho · Mirallas · Snodgrass
    Negredo · Giroud · Gayle

Feels like 3-5-2 is the way to go

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

    Thanks

Fair enough, but I think Giroud could have a good second season though, especially if no signs and he's leading the line.

I suppose I could change Coutinho and Giroud > Walcott and Sturridge or something similar.

Me. Not even for week 1.

Way I see it is, I dont want Hazard with plan of selling week 2. If anything like last year happens to me, i will be taking hits for injuries already.

My plan is to get in the 15 with good fixtures for early games, then deal with trouble as it happens if needed and to sign on form basis.

Week 1 plans have to be regarded as long term. Chelsea fixtures are awful weeks 1-6.

I thin planning a transfer is setting yourself up for trouble. Its not just Hazard's potential score you have to worry about. It is Hazard's score minus Silva's score and is the difference worth planning a transfer?

Obviously, Pellegrini working with different players now but it's a decent guide as to how City are going to be organised next season.

Judging by below, it's one with another playing in the hole. 4231/4141. So seems evident Negredo is a risk from the start, Aguero can play in the hole along with Jovetic and Silva

A bit different but its good, I've toyed with something similar. Would go with Nolan over Arteta as Arteta is somewhat dependent on penalties.

Thing is with Michu, at least, is that he will still score points to make him worth something...

Just quite probably not £9.0m worth of FPL investment.

He's had the Steven Ireland bump up, but I don't expect he'll have the Steven Ireland fall from grace either.

Depends how well Bony settles into their team. He could easily take away a high% of Michu's goals if Michu is played deaper. The only saving grace could be he's still regarded as a Midfielder. They may decide to play him as a lone forward when Swansea play away from home.

I think he'll fair better than Siggy, purely because he's nailed on, plays a more attacking role and has stayed with the same side. Siggy went from excellent attacking mid to rotating chap in a better team and little chance of bonus.

Michu will do well this season, but not as well as last.

I think its more fixtures than anything. I'm not going near Swansea when others have good FPL options and better fixtures.

If Swansea had a good start I'd definitely consider Michu...as well as a Swansea defender.

More like a dempsey imo after his breakthrough season with fulham. The following year I think he might have been top scoring mid before moving on to Chelsea. I think a lot of teams will have him in the second half of the season especially if they are knocked out of Europe

Don't think he's "that" overpriced. Just not the bargain he was with his price and Bony coming in. Although he does seem better suited to playing behind than alone upfront. Sigurdsson was overpriced because he wouldn't get much game time. Michu could be in people's thoughts with good fixtures

15 goals, 2 assists for Rayo in La Liga.

17 goals, 2 assists for Swansea in the Premier league.

Age 27, rarely misses a match. Nailed on. How many other 9+m options have scored like that consecutively in decent leagues? Off top of my head, Lampard and Gerrard, but they're a wee bit old now.

Scored against Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea off the top of my head last season.

I think he will definitely still get points over the course of the season (so no to this season's Siggurdson) but I think there are 3 things turning people away from him (myself included).
      - Difficult Fixtures in the first 6 weeks
      - Europa League (Stoke, Newcastle effect)
      - Bony signing (although this doesn't bother me compared to the first 2 because I think he has proved he scores points playing at no.10)

I know some ppl wont like the look of Negrado (But I'm taking the risk), and the shortage of UTD cover, but I'm happy with this draft for GW1.
And am fairly confident that Terry will be #1 under Mourinho and picking Clichy over Zab, as Richards looking really good pre-season!

    Here we go...

    Foster, Boruc
    Garrido, Nastasic, Dawson, Parr, Chester
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Bellamy, Wanyama
    Berbatov, Lukaku, Sturridge
    BANK: £1.5

    DEFENCE:
    - Foster and Boruc - no explanation needed.
    - Nastasic and Dawson will be in my team every week.
    - Garrido, Parr and Chester have a decent 3-way rotation.
    - Nastasic may change to Mertesacker, but I prefer Nastasic fixtures (especially GW3 when Arsenal and Spurs play each other. Both teams to score in that one).

    MIDFIELD:
    - Bale, Hazard and Walcott - no explanation needed.
    - Surprised more people don't have Wanyama in their team. The new Yaya Toure.
    - Hazard could be transferred to an in-form Man City midfielder for their match against Hull.
    - Bellamy (and Wanyama, I suppose) could still change.

    ATTACK:
    - Lukaku could change to Bony
    - Lukaku/Bony could also be transferred to Negredo or Jovetic for their match against Hull.

    What do you reckon?

No City cover will kill you imo. THOSE fixtures are too good to miss.

J.Cole should stick to rapping. (Think Jarvis or Brunt are better punts)

      Giroud not worth it imo.

Don't downgrade Walcott, he's got a great run of fixtures. Vorm and Swansea have a really tough start, so maybe look at getting Boruc or downgrade Mannone to a 4.0m keeper and then get Mignolet instead of Vorm. Not sure about Bent, and even if he joined Newcastle I'm not expecting big things. If you bring in Gayle then just replace Pozuelo with Koren, and rotate Koren and Gayle. with the leftover cash hopefully you might be able to upgrade Thomas to Hernandez. I think that works, unless my maths sucks:

      Vorm > Boruc
      Thomas > Hernandez
      Pozuelo > Koren
      Bent > Gayle

      Hope that helps 🙂

      B) Negredo, Mirallas and Kacaniklic
      C) Berbatov, Mirallas, Snodgrass.

C then A then B. Negredo and Kacanaclic is alot of risk And I dont have the heart for regularly getting nervous about team selection!

Depends if that 5.5 is a 5th mid or not. If so, A. If not, C

Mata. But ofcourse price is a salient factor; that extra 1m is an important factor to consider

      Hazard

I'd have favoured Hazard even if he was 0.5 more this season I reckon.

    RMT Guys? Thanks!

    Mignolet (Boruc)

    Mertersacker Coleman Nastasic (Chester) (Parr)

    Bale Gerrard Silva Mirallas (Koren)

    Rodriguez Sturridge Giroud

I know that the subs are very weak but I wanted a stronger midfield! Any tips guys?

The subs being weak isn't a problem as with a starting XI like that you'll never want to play them. Difficult to get them all but I'd want attacking Utd and/or Chelsea cover as well in there. Defence is on the pricey side.
