In Development – Projections and Rate My Team

Our pre-season projections and Rate My Team tool are almost ready to go live in the Members Area. Over the past week we’ve seen a number of significant signings, notably at the Etihad, that have delayed our first set of numbers but, with the market seemingly settled for 24-hours, we’re now very close to going live with both, albeit with perhaps a big Gareth Bale caveat on the way.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may have got to know via last season’s ScoutCast.

The Rate My Team model is built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attack and defence rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

In the next day or so we will be publishing full projections for every Premier League player, plotting their total points, goals, assists etc for the entire season. These will include short-term projections offering a view of the opening six Gameweeks.

The projection tables will be fully sortable and you can assess FPL points per million value to help you run the rule over those crucial budget purchases.

In addition to the Projections, the full Rate My Team tool will also be going live shortly.

This can be used in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. It includes a players table that can filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also be used to build a team from scratch, analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains your bench and bench order and allow you to model your future transfers.

The “Professor” and I will be creating some new movies explaining how the Projections and Rate My Team work in the next few days. Look out for them over the weekend and into next week.

A reminder that memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

was about the same or better form than Lambo at the end of the season last year, and he's also cheaper.

also played ahead of Lambo in the formation a couple times too.

End of last season run basically. He was given the opportunity by Pots and he took it. Lambert flourished early on, with the same manager with the reigns he'll do great things. I've not got him but he's on my watch list.

I think RVP is a tad overpriced and I am anticipating a slight drop in his price.

Bale could take a while to warm up and he may not be in the EPL next season anyway.

I spent all night tinkering with and without RVP and/or Bale.

I've resigned myself to the fact I am not going to start them in a bid to maximise the potential for quick budget profits.

As previously stated, a budget of around 103-104 would be nice come January.

Not daft at all to build team value. The problem is that it is difficult to know at tbis stage which players will rise and fall in value. Even RvP last year went all the way up to 14.2 from a starting price of 13.0.
To build value, you need to jump on bandwagons early, and drop players before too many other managers rush for the exits. Both may require points hits. The problem with this is that if you concentrate on TV to the detriment of all else, you will find yourself with a rank of 500K. Team value will take care of itself if you have good players.

    the cromulent one
    • 11 Years

I think that the whole concept of points per million in price is a deeply flawed concept. I know that it is the standard FPL way to judge value, but it leaves a lot to be desired.
First, mathematically it is ill conceived. We are obliged to spend at least 4.0 on every defender, not zero. So the origin is shifted. This means that we cannot use points per million of price to compare a defender to a midfielder, because midfielders have a different minimum price. This problem was alluded to above when someone suggested comparing Glen Johnson with a 6.0 midfielder. The comparison is not a valid one, because midfielders are naturally more expensive.
Points per million can allow you to compare two defenders (or two midfielders) but only in a relative sense. Player A is more valuable than Player B. But you can never say that player A is twice as valuable as player B, because of the non-zero minimum price.
I'm not entirely sure what a better way would be... I wish that I had a bit more of a mathematics background. Any Math PhDs on here?

When comparing Baines with Mirales for example the argument is that Baines is better value because he scores more points and costs the same. However as you correctly point out thats comparing apples with oranges. The fact they have fixed categories means they can only be measured against their own player pool (defenders or midfielders). The difference in scoring methods for both defenders and midfielders is the key distinguishing feature that helps determine the prices of each.

The fact that these differences can't be adequately reconciled means that instead of comparing A with B it would be more accurate to compare AB with AB. So in this instance a more accurate comparison would be Baines & Thomas compared with Mirales & Clyne. This would be the best way to even out the value disparity between midfielders and defenders.

I think that you stated the problem much more clearly than I did!
I agree completely that when weighing up a defender vs a midfielder, one must be sure to make the phrase is as defA & midA vs defB & midB. Otherwise it is meaningless.

The post was more in response to the main article, where it states that players can be sorted according to "value", as in projected points per million in cost. I'm wondering just how valuable (!) those comparisons will be.

Nice post. The other issue with value besides the one pointed out in this conversation is that value only applies to certain price tiers -- you have to spend the money somewhere so any extra points you can gain with your final 25-30m will not come at the same pts per Million that the first 70-75m did, but that doesn't mean they are less valuable.

            Well put.
The value of an all-cheap defence is that it allows more heavy-hitters up front, for example. But that value will not show up in any projected points per million in cost.
The problem, to take the example further, is that I'm unsure how to evaluate how cheap a defence is too cheap... there is an optimal solution here somewhere; finding it is driving me batty.

I think you need to judge each player by the point/price difference of other players in the same position. As you said they don't have the same base price, but take this example:

say Baines vs Mirallas, how much more points will Baines score compared to, say, Collocini @5m? Is that more than the amount of points Mirallas will outscore, say, Wanyama (@5m) by?

It gets pretty iffy and I'm not sure if I picked the correct comparison. There is, however, a way to measure these things as in NFL Fantasy Quarterbacks score the most points by a wide margin, yet they get drafted very late, because the difference between the best QB and the 12th best QB isn't as high as Runningback 1 vs RB12.

Hope somebody understod my ramble :S (studying physics = mind on overload)

Physics! Close enough! What kind of physics, may I ask?
I like your analogy of NFL fantasy (though I'm afraid that it might not resonate too well with most on here). Certain groups of players will have the similar relative value (the qbs) while others show a wide spread of returns, so the good ones are in high demand.
But I think that the analogy has its limitations. We're not doing a draft, but instead have a fixed budget. Having a budget means that spending big somewhere means going cheap elsewhere. So a player's value has to be judged in terms of what it allows elsewhere on the team.
As mentioned, I don't know how to quantify all this.

Circuits! Great stuff. I've forgotten most of the details, but I'm still using the digital circuits material.
I always enjoyed the probability and statistics courses. But it's not something I use much anymore. 15 years is long enough for it all to be more than a bit hazy.

From a quick check based on the highest scorer of that price range to compare with.

        - Baines 177, Bassong(5m) 121pts

Lets assume Mirralles has a cracker of a season and matches Baines's score

        - Mirallas 177, Johnson(5m) 97pts

So in conclusion there is still a points difference of 24 points in favour of the Mirallas combination.

Mirallas played a lot less minutes than Bassong, I calculated points/min and scaled it up, which would put Mirallas at 155 last year. That takes away most of the 24 points in favor of Mirallas

But Mirallas only got 96 points as a forward (would have been 110 as a midfielder).
So Baines + B Johnson outscored Mirallas + Bassong by 274 points to 231.

It also makes a difference how many of these will play every time, how many will be bench-sitters, and how many of them will be used in rotations.

I have often pondered that very question but have never really attempted to solve it mathematically.

I only compare value when comparing players against other players in the same category.

      From a completely non-mathmatical viewpoint;
If you closely follow a selection policy based purely on value as I did for a trial team, choosing Lampard instead of Hazard, turner instead of Bassong, Rooney and not RVP etc etc, you can end up with a nice looking bunch of players . . . and about 4m left in the bank.
Nice as that situation is, what is the first reaction of the average manager to having this spare cash - he'll spend it on upgrading to a more attractive luxury player with poor value/score relation like Coutinho, of course!

You can quite simply use PPMAB

      Points per million above base

      Where the base's are

      4.5

Hey, Agree and I definitely look at ppm, however I am wary that a season's points are affected by Injuries and a player who missed 10 games has less chance of racking up points and therefore punished in a ppm calculation.

I did think of that, but I don't think it gives anything useful. It would lead to the absurd conclusion that 4.0 defenders are infinitely valuable.
But with different values for the base, it could make sense. I just don't know what an appropriate value for that base is, or how it might be derived.

This may not get read by anyone as a) it's on a really old page and b) I don't post much but I always use points per discretionary million. The budget of £100m is not real - we have to buy 2 x £4m GK, 5 x £4m def, 5 x £4.5m mid and 3 x £4.5m for, so we actually have £36m to upgrade from this base team of rubbish.

RVP costs £9.5m, Bale £7.5m so that's £17 of your £36m of money you can chose to spend - almost half not the quarter normally quoted, which is why it's so hard / impossible to do.

Mathematically it does give you issues with cheapest players who have infinite pts per disc. million but so few of them are really worth consideration it's not too much of a problem. This method gives a big premium on cheap players who get a decent haul but to my mind that's a good thing, spending 0.5 to get someone who plays every week over an uber cheap bench fodder should be better use of a discretionary 0.5 than getting an extra 0.2 points per week from refining your big hotter choice.

Finally don't forget that your captain gets double points per million as well as double ordinary points so one big captain choice will always be worth it but it gets more complex if you rotate the captaincy around a lot.

Really tough selecting a starting squad this year! Kinda hoping that there is a DGW so that we can load up on CHE and Benteke , then take a hit or two once other situations become clear.

So many unknowns especially where value can be had; Would be nice if we had a

    1. Wilshere ....if in the hole will be a great punt
    2. Will Bony fit right in?
    3. Which United midfielder will shine....great value here between Nani,Young, Kagawa, Zaha, Valencia
    4. SIssoko....if in the hole @ 6.0 great shout

      3. Nani is on the outer, Young is an anomaly, Kags is GREAT value, Zaha is also worth a look if you want to invest for some profit and Valencia is probably going to miss GW1 as I think there's a friendly vs Spain just before the season opener. So, that said, Zaha could get some action and at 6.5 I think he's a good buy. The dude has quality touch and anticipation. He absolutely destroyed United's B-Team a season or two back.
      4. Who?
      5. I am not touching City, at least until I do some recon. It's a dog's breakfast.

Been thinking about this for days........When it comes to the discussion surrounding RVP/Bale....Should I have both? One or the other? or Neither? When determining which way to go, I asked myself the question. "If i make the wrong decision which will hurt more" 1. RVP no Bale - 51% Bale ownership ouch! 2. Bale no RVP - surely the odds on favorite to win the golden boot for a third straight season. Gets attacking returns in 80% of starts "Only" 36% ownership. If he has a smashing start, and you think it is difficult to get him in your squad at 14.0M try it at 14.5 and 40% ownership. ouch! 3. Neither....well that is just insanity. double ouch! 4. If RVP or Bale fail miserably you can always downgrade along with the other 1.3 Million Bale owners and 1 Million RVP owners. It will hurt, but at least you are not alone! IMHO....you have to have both

No you dont , one of Chelsea Man cor Arsenal will explode GW1 and if you have Bale and RVP then it likely your coverage will be inadequate.
Also at 14m Van Persie scoring dosent mean you should have him . At that price six points is almost a fail

Absolutely, now Chadli is in the squad, Bale is much more likely to play in the hole where he was so effective last season. Even against the big teams he is a serious threat.

Hazard, Walcott, Sturridge, Aguero if you can afford it..

Do a team with both, then one with just Bale. See the difference that the extra 3m + makes. 0.5m can make a big difference per player.

Is anyone else worried about Norwich's form on the road? Last season they had the 3rd worst attacking records when playing away. Granted any defensive cover will likely be rotated, I assume people will want the likes of RVW and Snodgrass to play every game. Is everyone confident the likes of RVW, Fer and Redmon will help strengthen them on the road?

That said, Snodgrass at 6.5m is still fantastic value, regardless of their performance on the road.

I thought Snod did most his scoring on the road

Looked it up, and yes you're right, he got 2 goals and 2 assists at home, and 4 goals and 4 assists on the road. Interestingly he made a lot more passes in matches at home and marginally more key passes at home, yet he was a lot more accurate with his passes away.

Similarly he had marginally more shots at home. Is there a simple explanation for the difference? I cant say I watched many of Norwich's matches last season.

If you have Snodgrass as a 4th mid I really think Koren is a must for 5th mid.

Snodgrass has tough fixtures in GW4, 7, 8 and 10.

Koren is at home against Cardiff in GW4, Aston Villa in GW7 and Sunderland in GW10.
