Double Gameweek 1 Confirmed for Chelsea and Villa

The Premier League have this afternoon confirmed both Chelsea and Aston Villa will now start the season with a double Gameweek 1. With the Blues set to face Bayern Munich in the Uefa Super Cup Final on Friday August 30, their home game against Villa, which was initially scheduled for Saturday August 30, has now been shifted to Wednesday August 21.

This news is set to bring the Blues assets firmly onto our Fantasy radars, bearing in mind Jose Mourinho’s side also entertain Hull City on the opening weekend of the new season. Huge investment is now expected to come Chelsea’s way, though Fantasy managers will be mulling over a couple of recent Mourinho comments as they assess just who to splash their budgets on.

The Blues boss admitted Spain’s match in Ecuador, which takes place on August 14, may be a factor in his line-up for the Tigers fixture – something to consider when assessing the likes of Juan Mata, Cesar Azpilicueta and Fernando Torres for our starting XI:

“The players who go for their national teams two days before the opening of the Premier League, it depends a lot on that. Some have to go to Ecuador and come back and arrive in London on Saturday without having slept after a 15-hour flight to train on Saturday morning. If a player plays for England on Wednesday against Scotland, plays for 45 minutes at Wembley and then an hour after the game he is at home in Cobham sleeping, he is in a better condition to play. The team will be decided game after game and week after week. I will have to think about two or three matches at the same time.”

Only yesterday, Mourinho also revealed he will be a little more cautious with Frank Lampard’s game time this term. As mentioned in this morning’s Friendlies Round Up, the veteran midfielder is unlikely to one of the “untouchables” this time around as his manager looks to rest him more often.

The comments perhaps strengthen Eden Hazard’s prospects as the Belgian looks to replicate his start to the previous season, which produced double figures in both his double Gameweek 1 appearances. While loading up on Chelsea looks a viable tactic, a trip to United in Gameweek 2, followed by a blank fixture the following week, also has to be factored into the equation.

For Villa, though, the appeal of a double is significantly lessened, bearing in mind they travel to Arsenal prior to the Stamford Bridge showdown – those eyeing up Christian Benteke, for example, may be a little cautious given the fixtures, though the uncertainty surrounding the Chelsea forwards certainly indicates the Belgian looks the most nailed-on of any double Gameweek frontline option.

We’ll have more on the two sides in upcoming Scouting the Doubles articles – for now, though, this is just a heads-up.

Which are the best three options from each side?

Anyone planning to stock up then wildcard in gwk 2-3?

Benteke, Hazard and Ivanovic are the first three I thought of.

Looks like the Spanish players will miss the first game due to international commitments.

Villa face Arsenal, Chelsea and then Liverpool. Then have a blank. Avoid them.
Hazard is constant I guess. Whether two have two or three players from Chelsea is the question. I am looking at Azpi and Ramires or Lukaku.

3 chelsea, staying away from villa.

don't intend to wildcard too early. it's 2 FTs to get rid of chelsea players (if at all necessary) and jump on the early bandwagons. For their blank, 1 chelsea player blank won't be a dealbreaker.

just think back last season with the flurry of DGW's at the tail end - weren't you wishing you had a WC to spare? 😀

3 Chelsea (or 4 with Rooney), 0 Villa

Hazard, Lukaku and one other. Maybe a defender though I want to gamble on Super Frank doing enough in one game to allow for just a cameo in the other.

If I wildcard early, its not for the sake of removing 2 Chelsea players.

Only Chelsea. Getting Villa attack is nuts considering their opening gameweeks.

Best three options for me: Luiz, Hazard, Lukaku

Definitely not planning to do an early wildcard. With two smart transfers, you can get a full team out for GW 3 no problem.

Terry, Hazard (C) and Lukakau for me atm. No Villa
Can't see Jose favouring Cahill, and with Azpi minutes in doubt, think Terry will start both.
Hazard - no brainer - summer off - flying fit
Lukaku - It's him or Torres I reckon (unless Rooney signs)

Will transfer 1 out GW 2 and at least 1 more GW 3

I'm betting on Benteke even though his fixtures are bad. My team is:

      Foster
      Zabaleta - Collins - Coleman
      Bale - Walcott - Hazard (C) - Jarvis
Benteke - Lukaku (VC) - Anelka

Bench: Robles - Mirallas - Clyne - Whittaker

      Transfer plan:
      - GW1: Hazard for Silva/Snodgrass or Lukaku for Lambert/Rodriguez depending on performance in GW 1. If both Chelsea players perform well I might save the transfer for after GW2
      - GW2: Benteke for Berbatov/one of the cheaper Newcastle strikers if they perform. Hazard or Lukaku if I use a transfer in GW1. For the same players I listed above.

Does this sound ridiculous? My other option is to drop the Benteke idea and go with Giroud in attack and then Terry in defense. That would be easier to rotate around given that you have 5 defenders. I would love some feedback.

either 2 or 3 chelsea and probably no villa. i'm planning on getting hazard and lukaku (maybe i'll throw benteke in there for extra Belgian flair :D). and then i might try to squeeze in a defender (luiz or cashley) or maybe take a punt on lamps or schurrle. with those fixtures i'd be happy with a start and a sub appearance perhaps. thinking schurrle might be my flair punt

This is going to be tricky. People who are set on wildcarding early will load up on the DGW and increase their team value alot. What about those who don't want to load up with Villa due to their fixtures/blank after and want to save their wildcard for a rainy day. How do we counteract the ones who will probably get off to a flying start?

I want to be one of those who gets off to a flying start. I'm not sure....this is the same problem we had last season with the double. I didn't really stock up or wildcard early. If I had I would have had a far better start.

Yes. A good start is unbelievably important. If you want to win FPL you have to be in the top 10,000 by GW 10 or you don't have a chance.

Here's the thing. The ones who load up with Villa ain't going to be flying anywhere. Look at their fixtures. Doubt anyone of them will perform and people will eventually get rid of them due to blank. So not much to worry imo.

The counter to this may be that there will be other DGWs further down the line, for which these people will have no choice but to take hits. Those who maybe went in less hard in this one can make up some ground with a well timed wc in future DGWs. It's the tv issue that is more complex

By burying them in multi-match DGW later in the season when more points are available and we still have our WC to take advantage.

Don't think you need Villa players to get off to a good start, none of them are likely to score anymore than 4 points over both of the games.

It's easy enough to sort out your 3 Chelsea players by GW3... Don't think it'll be a disaster to keep the likes of Hazard and Ivan for United away.

Does anyone have any insight into how Villa are shaping up in pre-season (I know it's all here somewhere, but I'm lazy, sorry).

I think I'll have Hazard/Chelsea striker whoever it is and Cech (unless it's obvious which defender will play twice). I'm tempted by Benteke but that means a lot of chopping and changing in my side and a few transfers to clean up in the following weeks.

I don't like, and never have, going into the season dead-set on when I use my WC, but this DGW is a bit of a pickle - last year Torres(C) came through in the second game in the most unforeseen and fluky way if I recall correctly (it was late right?).

Not exactly firing on all cylinders yet, but they are crippled with injuries and Benteke yet to play (i think)

July 10 – SV Rodinghausen (German Tour) 1-1 (Helenius)
July 12 – SC Paderborn (German Tour) 1-1 (Weimann)
July 14- VfL Bochum (German Tour) 1-1 (Helenius)
      July 20 – Wycombe Wanderers (a) 2-2 (Lowton, Westwood)
      July 23 – Luton Town (a) 0-2
      July 26 – Crewe Alexandra (a)

They could but then he could also mix it up, Chelsea have 3 strong centre backs and 2 strong right back, Cole is on his own on the left as Bertrand will only replace hom if hes injured.

Right now it would take a brave man to pick his team but Cole and Cech look as nailed on as it gets.

My thoughts on the DGW... Comments appreciated.

I'm only half committing this year. Im bringing in Cole for Agger and sticking with Hazard in Midfield. THATS IT.

    Reasons...
    - Manager; new so not sure how they are going to play plus his rotation comments
    - GW2; vs Utd a tough fixture
    - Some potentially top fixtures elsewhere for decent players vs rubbish opposition.
    - Wildcard; I think its too valuable to use in GW2 so Im holding out for a DGW later in the season.

Hazard I think will play twice but he was in my team anyway. Cole is going hopefully going to get the DGW then I'm going to swap for Agger. Hopefully Cole will play two blinders and his price will rise. I can then make the 0.5m back on Agger and whatever profit I can from a (hopefully) Cole price rise.

Not touching any Villa players and the rest of the Chelsea squad Im just not sure about... unless someone can convince me Lukaku will play twice (in which case I may bring him in for Sturridge up front).

No, I don't think he's nailed on for 180 mins. But he'll get more than 90 mins against two very poor defences and will want to come out of the blocks like a rocket to stake his claim.

(Lost in the last article now)

Thrown together this early dragt for DGW1. Only had to make 2 changes to my original team.

    Cech (Boruc)
    Coleman Collins Luna (Clyne Turner)
    Bale Hazard Mirallas Lampard Coutinho
    Giroud Rodriguez (Anelka)

The plan then for GW3 would be to replace Hazard and Lampard with 2 FTs and put Cech on the bench. Could even play Anelka if he does good in first 2 weeks.
