As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

50/50 between him and Mbiwa, no idea who'll start I'm afraid.

Colo, Debuchy and Santon look nailed on at 5.0 but seems expensive.

Young Paul Dummett had a great pre-season and isn't even on the game atm, looks likely to be first back up as full back if Debuchy/Santon get injured, hopefully he might be 4.0 and a bargain at some stage!

Navas, Zaha, Oscar, Negredo and Paulinho are risky.

Navas only bagged four assists last season in La Liga. Zaha will get introduced to hardcore defenders like Shawcross and Huth (wont get very far). Oscar would be in my team if he was 'nailed on'. Negredo is apparently not gonna get the nod and it looks like Dzeko and Jovetic are most likely to start. Paulinho is more of an end-to-end midfielder like Carrick and doesnt promise a lot of goals...a great player but not a good fantasy pick.

    A'noon all,

Every year I do a 'Control' team that I don't touch or make any transfers for all season for a mate who doesn't play anymore. If you get lucky with injuries it can still do quite well - Aguerro/Roon default captains didn't do me any favours last season. So with that in mind how does this look?

    Migs (Boruc)

    Kos- Murner- Collins (Chester- Brayford)

    Haz(vc) - Theo - Mirallas - Paulinho (Kim)

    RVP(c) - JRod - Sturridge

    Cheers

What's the verdict on this RVPless team?

Mignolet - Davis (any 4.0 keeper will do since Migs is nailed on)
    Koscielny - Toure - B Turner - Parr - Chester
    Michu - Hazard - Walcott - Coutinho - R Morrison
    Lukaku - Benteke - Dzeko

    2 mill in the bank.

Considering switching up GK's to rotating 4.5's (because of having three Pool players and a doubling up on Pool defence, plus the possibility of Suarez staying and/or Sturridge doing well and entering my team). Also considered Anelka for Dzeko, leaving 4 mill in the bank to upgrade a midfielder to Bale or other similar expensive shenanigans.

But none of your midfields are priced at 10.0m+ and so you can't get Bale straight in anyway so you would have to take a hit! In my experience by simply having better players in your squad means that you won't have to take hits anyway as you will be happier with them!

Sorry its a tactic I see a lot of people using claiming they will bring in RVP but if you don't have the funds to make one direct transfer then whats the point of wasting the value in your bank.

Go ahead and pick your seconds team... mine would look like this:

    Ruddy | Mannone
    Ivanovic | Debuchy | Garrido | Rat | Kompany
    Oscar | Lennon | Cazorla | Osman | Zaha
    Negredo | JRod | Berbatov

Any viable alternatives to Ben Arfa now he's fat? Will Cisse and Remy both play?

If I am not mistaken that picture is a year old when he was injured. I will wait to make a decision on him.

Wasn't there a stat about bigger players adapting to the Premier League much faster than smaller players? Straight in my side at 172 kgs.

What, if anything at all, are the rumors that Lewis might oust Marshall based on? I did some research and Marshall has been nailed on for Cardiff. Lewis was released for free by Peterborough and wasn't close to being first choice in his last season there. He's played two games for Cardiff, both in cups.

I am staying away from Michu for the fixtures but still think he will do ok. I have the same front line and 4/5ths of your midfield so obviously I am going to say its a good team 🙂

Mannone is a horrible back up to Migs though, see reasoning below:

Much more attacking minded that Mancini thats for sure. But you never know if a manager will look to adapt to suit a new league.

What do you think of my last draft team?

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Cashley Koscielny Zabaleta (Chester Brayford)
    Coutinho Nolan Walcott Hazard (Paulinho)
    Giroud Lukaku Anelka

Note that all the starters have home matches in GW1 (and away matches in GW2)

Taking the Punt on Mid price Mids.

Discluding the Fantasy Managers favourite of Mirallis what other Great Mid price mids can we take a punt on for that 4th or 5th spot in the mid.

Snodgras- Only at 6.5m with 16.2% of owners having him he looks like a decent buy in. When you take a look at the stats his preseason doesn't stand out among the average player. Playing a total of 381 minutes and scoring no goals with 2 assists. His team onky managed to score 4 goals throughout the 381 mins he was on the pitch.

Pienaar- At 7m selected by 5.8% of teams also could be a player worth the punt he had a very solid season scoring 6 goals, 8 assist and held 11 clean sheets. His preseason hasn't been up to par only playing a total of 180 mins and not getting involved with the play at all.

Ramires - At 6.5m selected by 4.6% of teams he looks very impressive playing a total of 313 Mins preseason scoring 3 goals and picking up 1 assist looks very nice and a favourite of Mourinho he will surely get game time. With Chelseas DWG up in GW1 Ramires has to be surely has to be considered?

Sessegnon - At 7m owned by 5.5% of managers is also another one to look at had a very promising 2012/13 season bagging 7 goals, 5 assists and 11 cleansheets. His preason hasnt been anything out of the ordinary Di Canio is playing him tucking in behind Altidore which should rack him up a few goals and assists this season.

Nolan - at 7m Nolan seems to be the fan favourite being owned by 12.5% of teams he is attracting alot of attention. Scoring 10 goals, 2 assist and keeping 11 clean sheets last season i dont see why not? His fixtures are amazing his cheap and reliable. But with the main man Andy Carroll out with an injury and unlikly to play first game i wouldnt consider Nolan until Carroll has returned becasue then you will no that you have spent your money on a guaranteed performer.

Me personally will be taking in Sessegnon trying to stay under the radar with these players that are not "template" material and hoping he will perform for me with Sessegnon having Altidore up front to get the ball to, but if i have to look to trade him out i will be going to HBA most likely.

Then there is the likes of De Bruyne, Arteta, Johnson and HBA that arent ones to consider until we have a look at how they go in the early Gameweeks. Although HBA could be a solid player to take in after the city game as Newcastle have very nice fixtures.

Do you get DGW in the PlayOn game? Or is just the fixtures listed when picking the team? Currently loaded up on Chelsea and Villa players for obvious reasons, but may need an overhaul if DGW doesn't apply!
