Robin Van Persie returns to the Arsenal starting lineup in Barcelona tonight.

As we detailed yesterday, the Dutch striker was named late in Arsene Wenger’s 19-man squad for the second leg tie and was due to miss the match due to a knee injury sustained in the Carling Cup Final defeat to Birmingham. However, Van Persie returned to the squad and starts in Spain tonight – a major boost for Arsenal and, of course, great news for those who held on to a prize Fantasy asset over gameweek 29.

We await to see just how Van Persie comes through tonight’s game but, given Wenger’s assurances that he would take a gamble on the striker unless fully fit, the signs are good and we should expect Van Persie to return to league action in gameweek 30. As we’ve documented so often recently, Arsenal’s fixture in the forthcoming gameweek at West Brom on March 19, depends on the result of their FA Cup tie at Old Trafford this coming Saturday. If that goes to a replay both United and Arsenal will suffer a gameweek 30 blank.

That’s for another time however. For now, we can settle and watch Van Persie try his magic on the Barcelona defence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sympathy for the Arsenal players, RVP especially.

Absolutely no sympathy for the Arsenal fans. They found Ovrebo-gate hilarious, so I'll find this joke of refereeing decision funny too.

Zero shots from Arsenal, they'd have been knocked out even if RVP has stayed on the pitch.

American football- hitting after the whistle. Normally just a 15 yard penalty, but could result in ejection if intentional injury.

History suggests absolutely yes. Pretty sure they'll get turned over at the weekend, which leaves the Prem completely depending on the fitness of RVP and Fabs for the rest of the season. My bet is 3rd place.

Poor old Arse. Would have been a fairer match if RVP hadn't been sent off, not that I think it would have made much difference.

Arsenal red card: Harsh this, to say the least. Robin van Persie chases a ball over the top but he is marginally offside. He doesn't know it, though, and goes for goal - smashing his shot wide. According to referee Massimo Busacca, that is time-wasting and that means a second yellow card for the Dutchman. A stupid decision. Arsenal must play the last 25 minutes with 10 men.

Annoying the next NZ game starts at 4 in the morning, so I'll have to stay up for that to see the team sheet! Hoping that Ryder is back in (it was just a stomach bug wasn't it?) but it sounds like Vettori is screwed.
