Robin Van Persie returns to the Arsenal starting lineup in Barcelona tonight.

As we detailed yesterday, the Dutch striker was named late in Arsene Wenger’s 19-man squad for the second leg tie and was due to miss the match due to a knee injury sustained in the Carling Cup Final defeat to Birmingham. However, Van Persie returned to the squad and starts in Spain tonight – a major boost for Arsenal and, of course, great news for those who held on to a prize Fantasy asset over gameweek 29.

We await to see just how Van Persie comes through tonight’s game but, given Wenger’s assurances that he would take a gamble on the striker unless fully fit, the signs are good and we should expect Van Persie to return to league action in gameweek 30. As we’ve documented so often recently, Arsenal’s fixture in the forthcoming gameweek at West Brom on March 19, depends on the result of their FA Cup tie at Old Trafford this coming Saturday. If that goes to a replay both United and Arsenal will suffer a gameweek 30 blank.

That’s for another time however. For now, we can settle and watch Van Persie try his magic on the Barcelona defence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well, im absolutely gutted. Yes the referee was a disgrace but we were completely outplayed at the end of the day and they should have had a penalty. I can't see anyone beating them this year. Kos & Djourou were beasts at the back. I can't see any prem side this season doing aswell as they done, they showed great recovery pace.

I just hope Barca win it fairly and cut out the play acting. Best team i've ever seen.

-1 for the saying kos was beast at the back today...
he should have been sent off 3 times in the 2nd half for challenging villa like a c*nt,for fouling messi and for giving away a penalty....

We were dire yes, but how good is this Barca team. Tore Madrid apart, and we were taught a lesson today, when it comes to the big games, they really do step it up. Unfortunately, i can't see a Premiership team beating them this season.

      Yeah a little bit....

He's a very good player and will go onto be a truly excellent one, but the hype about him annoys the hell out of me. Alan Smith said something in the best half about Wilshere standing up the test and imposing himself on the midfield etc...

....when in reality, he'd done basically nothing that merited praise all game.

They edited half of those clips anyway. Most of those were him tackling someone, and then dribbling with it, but they ended the clip before he took a touch too many and lost the ball.

Arsenal only put up a resemblance of a fight and nearly pulled it off, because they are the only English team who can play the passing game and tried to beat Barca at their own game. And look what happened tonight... roasted off the park. Honestly, I fear for MU / Chelsea Spurs coming up against this Barca side... they've gone on a level from last season. It could be a proper embareassment of 6+ goal terms.

Trying to play a passing game at the best passes in the world doesn't work. I think Man U and Chelsea have the flexibility in their tactics to defend better and keep better position. Result might be the same in the end.

Hopefully Wenger will see that shit for brains Diaby and coke head Rosicky have no future at the club and the Kos is just Senderos in disguise. But no, Wenger will carry on with his project regardless.

Arsenal really missed Walcott tonight. You need the threat of pace in behind to have any sort of hope of beating Barcelona.

Yep, Walcott out was a big blow. If nothing else he would have provided an outlet to relieve some of the pressure when they were camped inside their own half. Think Spurs, with Bale and Lennon on the flanks could give Barca a rattle but their defense is woeful so it would all be in vain in the end.

I think one of Wenger and Nasri messed up badly tonight by playing him so high/telling him not to defend. When up against Daniel Alves it's of course nice to exploit the space he leaves, but when you don't want to attack anyway it might be a good idea to track him every now and then.

For the first 20 minutes Nasri gave Clichy some cover, but honestly, how many times did Dani Alves run through on his side? 15? 20?

It's not that simple tho Gargamel, Nasri was putting pressure on the player with the ball and Barcelona were just so good at moving it. Second half Bastion appeared to be the main outlet and tracked Barca's midfielders while Clichy went out to meet Elves. Very tough.

It's one thing getting your head around the technique needed to perform that scoop, but to actually have the presence of mind in those few milliseconds to even conceive doing what he did is mind-boggling.

It's pretty depressing how the best player in the Premier League probably wouldn't get in the Barcelona side.

I guess Pedro could drop out with Iniesta moving forward, but it wouldn't be a given that Fabregas would make the Barcelona side.

Fabregas is only a sub at International for the simple reason that the Barca lads are awesome - if he goes he'd play games as a rotation option as he would improve the squad - but mot the team.

Based on the body of work he's produced in his Arsenal career so far, are you confident that he will play that well until the end of the season?

I ask in all sincerity as I'm considering getting Djourou, but if his chances of cleanies are now suddenly greatly diminished by Szczesny being out then I can make other moves instead.

Barcelona are an amazing side, no one will get close this year but van Persie getting sent off was a joke, up until then they were being contained and we worked hard, they probably would have still won but it stopped being a contest at that point.

I agree the second yellow was ridiculous, but I'd lay the lions share of the blame at Wengers door, he didn't take action early enough and let Barca just keep pushing you back. I thought he had his tactics wrong today.
