Robin Van Persie returns to the Arsenal starting lineup in Barcelona tonight.

As we detailed yesterday, the Dutch striker was named late in Arsene Wenger’s 19-man squad for the second leg tie and was due to miss the match due to a knee injury sustained in the Carling Cup Final defeat to Birmingham. However, Van Persie returned to the squad and starts in Spain tonight – a major boost for Arsenal and, of course, great news for those who held on to a prize Fantasy asset over gameweek 29.

We await to see just how Van Persie comes through tonight’s game but, given Wenger’s assurances that he would take a gamble on the striker unless fully fit, the signs are good and we should expect Van Persie to return to league action in gameweek 30. As we’ve documented so often recently, Arsenal’s fixture in the forthcoming gameweek at West Brom on March 19, depends on the result of their FA Cup tie at Old Trafford this coming Saturday. If that goes to a replay both United and Arsenal will suffer a gameweek 30 blank.

That’s for another time however. For now, we can settle and watch Van Persie try his magic on the Barcelona defence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Blatant is an understatement, what a leg breaker that was. Should be a retrospective ban.

Great game. Just wish it would have been won in the pure sense of the word. Then I wouldn't have to put up with conspiracy theories on here now about sendings off, and 'being hard done by'. Look forward to the broadsheets' analysis tomorrow as well as they'll be giving a nice even view on the situation working from their Highbury flats.

You clearly don't know how much Barcelona > Madrid.

Inter were only able to do a job on Barca because they had an absolutely fantastic defensive machine, with 2 immense holding players camped. Madrid meanwhile have a weak defence, and 2 absolutely shocking fullbacks. And Xabi Alonso who is not a defensive spoiler.

It's not a given, you know how cup competitions work etc. Luck plays a big part. Arsenal were close to going through tonight even if they had 1 attempt to Barcelonas 19 or something.

The team to beat Barca will have to snatch a big win in the home leg though, because I don't think any team will get a result at the Camp Nou.

Agree with this. Playing against a side like Barca suits him down to the ground. He's quick, comfortable in possession and reads the game well. He just isn't strong enough to dominate in the Premier League, but that should come with time.

in the words of philosopher david haye, "that was as one sided as a gangrape." the rvp red card was almost irrelevent. 1 good touch from bendtner though and hilariously you might have won the tie.

Maybe a bit extreme, but then I do think the focus on the red card (and the Bendtner chance) by the media is a bit misleading.

It's playing the "what if" game and you can do it for Barca as well - what if the penalty in the first half had been given, what if Koscielny had been sent off, what if some of the umpteen fantastic chances Barca had were converted, etc.

exactly, it's almost a miracle arsenal have a 'what-if' to cling onto that game. it's not just pure stats it's the fact arsenal had the ball about 4 times all game and never looked like scoring whilst barcelona looked like scoring every 2 minutes

Joke from Twitter ala granvilles above

"What would make my night now is for Rafa to ask Jeff Stelling and Graeme Souness if they would like to see the dessert menu"

Funny to revista la liga coverage. "barca were just good not great ..." high standards
Saying arsenal played too defensive and didn't keep the ball - not sure they had much choice

Guillem Balague talking shit as usual. "Valencia, Villareal, Racing all took the game to Barcelona, you can't tell e they have better players then Arsenal"

Maybe that's because Barcelona step up to another level when playing a big team. Idiot.

I agree, but i don't think it was out of choice. Barca made us play that way. He just said "if you are going to go out, go out practicing what you preach, don't track back because you don't know how too" Never heard such bullshit in my life.

He didn't complete what he was saying for some reason, but it was along the lines of:

"When you assume the moral high-ground and say that you play the best football in the England, and then come to the Camp Nou and play that negatively.....'

Wenger's really does wear that jacket. Dashing. But this Barcelona is different class to the one Benitez played. I agree Wenger isn't a great manager when it comes to tactics but he is a far better manager then Benitez.

Trophies during his time at Liverpool against Wenger during the same period 'could' suggest otherwise. Liverpool having a far worse squad as well.....

You're in an exam, the invigilator does not warn you "10 mins/5 mins remaining", and suddenly shouts "STOP!". You look up thinking "huh?" and then put down your pen. Because you did not put down your pen at the exact moment that the invigilator shouted, you are disqualified from the exam...

If he was fit I could have team below for an 8 pt hit, which I think is pretty damn solid apart from the bench!

    Foster
    Walker/Coleman/Lolarov
    Arteta/Walcott/Nani/VDV
    Tevez/Rooney/RVP
