Robin Van Persie returns to the Arsenal starting lineup in Barcelona tonight.

As we detailed yesterday, the Dutch striker was named late in Arsene Wenger’s 19-man squad for the second leg tie and was due to miss the match due to a knee injury sustained in the Carling Cup Final defeat to Birmingham. However, Van Persie returned to the squad and starts in Spain tonight – a major boost for Arsenal and, of course, great news for those who held on to a prize Fantasy asset over gameweek 29.

We await to see just how Van Persie comes through tonight’s game but, given Wenger’s assurances that he would take a gamble on the striker unless fully fit, the signs are good and we should expect Van Persie to return to league action in gameweek 30. As we’ve documented so often recently, Arsenal’s fixture in the forthcoming gameweek at West Brom on March 19, depends on the result of their FA Cup tie at Old Trafford this coming Saturday. If that goes to a replay both United and Arsenal will suffer a gameweek 30 blank.

That’s for another time however. For now, we can settle and watch Van Persie try his magic on the Barcelona defence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i always enjoy watching barca play but i found myself hoping arsenal would win. ref totally wrecked the game, also thanks to all the dives. go within 1m of a barca player and he'll hit the deck and scream in agony. Alves is a shocker, and cant believe abidal didnt get sent off and that rvp did. didnt messi get called offside later in the match and still have a shot at goal? yet no yellow card for him...
not saying the arsenal players were innocent either though

I wanted an Arsenal victory as well and the sending off was really unfair imo but lets be honest, Barca still would have won the match. Arsenal had no shots at all, they rarely got the ball past there own half, the goals were coming for Barca either way.

Now, time for all the if's and but's.. keep them coming..

of course barca still would have won, they had all the possession and heaps of shots. arsenal had nothing in attack really (rvp and fabs didnt look 100%). still would have been nice to go to extra time...

He can bury them in the back of the net against teams like Leyton Orient no problem but when it really matters hes a scrub! Time to send him packing and bring in someone whom we can rely on!

                Yes.

The agg score was 4-3 so, effectively the same as being 1-0. And no matter who you are a 1-0 lead in football is never safe. A goal then and Barcelona has to score again because of the away goals rule.

And no matter how good they are there's no guarantee they would have scored again, like many pundits have suggested.

The result is what it is though, so none of the speculation really matters.

Nowadays football in general is rotten, and I genuinely hope that the stench of it reaches such a level that thousands upon thousands of fans wake up to the fact and quit paying through the nose for it. Oh how sweet it would be if huge numbers suddenly cancelled their Sky subscriptions, refrained from buying replica shirts etc and stopped attending Premiership matches. The earth-shattering effect it would have on the elite clubs would be joyous to behold.

Was a frustrating game. Ref was horrible, and Arsenal were horrible. I guess you could complain about ref, but how did they expect to win a game with 0 shots on goal, were they hoping for yet another own goal to push them through. In the End, I think Wenger got it all wrong. Van Persie should have never started from the outset as he wasnt at 100% nor was creating or getting into space. Rosiky another questionable start, as was Cesc who was obviously only running at 50%. Chamakh wouuld have been a good option to start as would gibbs, eboue. Ars didnt have to win the game, they just didnt have to lose it. Even after the sending off, changes should have been made and the bus should have been parked. Wenger has a losers mentality - Cesc is a disgrace of a captain hugging and kissing all his fellow catalans pre game. Bad coaching, bad captaining - A team of this quality should win more silverware and when they dont im afraid it can come down to these 2 key people.

Arsenal weren't horrible, they had a horrible strategy. Wenger took a page from the Mancini book of having 10 men behind the ball with the star striker dropping deep into his own 50.

Funny how the ref saw RVP's foul but not the slap on Nasri or the choking of RVP by Abidal, or the scissor tackle on Nasri by Dani Alves. Awful.

we all know red card to rvp was a disgrace but you should not forget the fact that koscielny should have been sent off as well in the 2nd half...you were beaten by the best team in the world accept this and move on.

Congrats, you beat an understrength team with a 10-0-0 formation, and yet still couldn't beat an "inferior" team without several key decisions by the refs and a few defensive errors. Yes, true brilliance.

10-0-0 formation...couldnt beat an inferior team....if rvp wasnt sent off, what would be the excuse then. If barca converted at their normal rate, the game would have been 4-0 before rvp was sent off. Would a good decision by the ref change the fact that arsenal had no shots on goal? Barca are brilliant, as much as I hate them, they completely outplayed arsenal and it would have been a much bigger injustice had they not won for the crap that arsenal was playing, they didnt deserve to even compete. And Cesc should just leave already!

Bad day. I expected better from this Arsenal squad.

All midfielders of Arsenal were mostly acting as a defensive mid and unable to connect to the strikers. The connection happens generally via Fabs/Song/Wilshere but didnt work out this time due to extensive pressure from Barca fwds/mids on ARS half.

Also Arsenal defence is running in zero confidence at the moment. Need a Vermaalean recovery and some other good defensive option as well.

Walcott was missed there too. Arshavin was good but was too late by then. he could have started instead of Rosicky or Fab should have been benched.

Nasri, Wilshere were the best players from Arsenal. They are shaped onto world class players. Bendtner, Rosicky, Clichy, Koscielny are sort of a liability.

The only goal from Arsenal was because of the single handed effort from Samir Nasri. Almunia was good but not consistent. He was quite confident though (as if he has nothing to loose).

Only FPL knows and they keep it a secret. Here is a pretty good guess as to how it works

      http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/crack-the-code-2010-11-the-fiso-guide-to-fpl-price-changes-t77216.html

At this point in the season, you should not be worrying about price rises and price drops. They can be pretty random.

I think Fergie should play Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez on Sat in the FA cup against Arsenal, he loves teasing the back four. Wenger did say he would have won if Van Persie didn't get a red, guess he can prove how strong his team is on Sat.

Wait for the news, if it's a dislocation it may not be so long before he returns. I dislocated my thumb, playing in goal, in a schools cup final many years ago, was unable to play in the rugby final the following week, but then was back playing. I would have thought the medical facilities at a top club would be able to cope (obviously depends on the exact nature of the injury). Surely the thought of Almunia between the sticks will be motivation enough for the Arsenal backroom staff.

My team this year has become less of a team of my own devices, and more of a team forced into changes due to injuries and suspensions.

That happens every year for me. Once I start making changes out of choice, that's where it all goes wrong. Nothing worst than removing a player who catches fire the following week.

i reckon utd will have too much for them especially after having a weeks rest and a bit of the old fergie siege mentality drummed into them after 2 losses

I completely agree with you mate, but we can all dream... 🙂

did you watch the ars game last night or go see BC rattle pompy? I made about 40 with barca minus 1, would be sitting alot prettier though if i didnt back chelsea minus 2.

KOL i went down to city, havent missed a home match in the league since i was 4 (22 years) so although it was tempting to miss a nothing game last night i sort of felt i had to go!

lost £25 on my maynard wincast but cant moan as done ok with it recently

I would have backed the maynard wincast if i got chelsea up on monday but barca minus 1 was always my bet.

Don't think it will be that easy. No nani is a big blow and therefore i can see arsenal maybe edging it. They will also want to put things right after the barcelona loss.

If I can have one piece of luck from the FPL gods this season let it be a draw in that match. I've got only 2 players from the 4 teams that would have a blank gw. It's my last hope at some sort of redemption!

6 away games including tot, bol, ful, sto. 4 home games including liv, utd, vil. 😕
Chelsea & utd have it better, not by much but certainly better.

Chelsea have 6 at home, 4 away. 2 tough home games - mcy, tot. 3 tricky away games - utd, eve, sto. Looks much better actually imo.

I personally think Chelsea have the easiest run-in, but I don't see them winning the league from this position. FPL wise though, it's time to pile in on Chelsea for me. Lamps + Luiz, and either Drogba or Torres if one of them hits form.

I was thinking the same. I'm thinking of doing Nani > Lamps regardless of Nani's injury outcome. Probably a bold move eh, if I decide to go for it. Would have to downgrade Hart > Foster to fund it too....

It's way too difficult to call, Arse have Spurs away, Liverpool & United at home. Chelsea have City Spurs & United. Man Utd have Arse and Chelsea but who's to say they are gonna win all their other games, no one saw United losing to Wolves, Arsenal could slip up at Stoke or somewhere like that. I hate to say it but I still think United will win it unless Van Parsnip stays fit, he could be the difference.

If Arsenal get anything out of this season it will be a huge boost for them and testimony to their mental growth. IMO it will be really tough to come back from defeats such as the ones they have had in the Carling cup and the CL and that too in such a short period of time.

    Anti-Football

Since opta stats began in 2004 Arsenal are the first ever team not to register a single shot in a Champions League game.

If you include Champions league, Europa league, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga and the Premiership Arsenal were the first team not to register a shot during a match since Almeria were defeated 1-0 by Barcelona in 2009.
