The Community Round Up

A certain Dutchman, misfiring premium midfielders and the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System’s (BPS) love affair with centre-backs dominated discussions among the Fantasy Football Scout community this week. We also catch up with the latest goings-on in the community leagues taking place this season.

Hottest Topics

A look at the top ten FPL points scorers  does not contain a single midfielder; a worrying development for those Fantasy managers used to premium midfielders dominating the game. The fate of expensive midfielderS has been a key discussion this week with QPR Expects…Glory among the pessimists who believe the premium midfield era is over and it is time to invest in centre backs instead. Arsene’s Boys, however, is more optimistic, pointing out that we are just two games into the season. In addition many of last year’s star midfielders such as Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla failed to perform early on, he notes.

As premium midfielders fail to excite us there is now plenty of interest in centre-backs. But is their dominance of the bonus points shortlived? Jamsiep, wonders whether we are experiencing a false dawn, due to a lower than average number of goals being scored this season. His excellent post suggests that centre-backs may not be so fortunate when the goal rate picks up.

Still on the same subject, SAAB has been considering that many of the league’s most attacking teams simply do not have a suitable midfield option for Fantasy managers. He points out that teams such as Tottenham, Manchester United, Southampton and Aston Villa currently just have forwards worth our consideration.

If Wayne Rooney stays at Manchester United could he match Robin Van Persie’s expected returns? King Nemanja’s  analysis of Rooney and RVP performances together last season provides interesting reading for those looking for a cut-price root into Manchester United’s attack.

Owning Van Persie obviously makes captaincy decisions much easier. But for those looking to mix up their armband selection, Impressive Tackle has compiled this handy long term guide to the best non-RVP captains available  all the way up to Gameweek 20.

Finally, Isacki has been taking a look  at price changes and reckons it is far tougher for players to rise in price this season. His analysis also takes a look at the time price changes kick in and how ownership level and flags influence price falls.

Community Leagues

Heels Over Head’s Worst to First 2Million+Club league, which is open to anyone who has an overall rank below 2 million during one of the first five Gameweeks, is currently topped by Gokyo Locos who rose more than 700,000 places on his long march to the top. The code to join this FPL league 459213-545168.

Patrick Star retains his lead in Fifa Las Vegas’s 28-strong league, with a score of 154, closely followed by Messimerized with 151. In joint third on 144 points are MB10 and Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up.

Thomass67 and Peppie and Felix’s  league is split into three  groups and topped by Thomass, Daniel and Forca Inter.

The leaders of In Tommy We Trust’s five leagues are ENR, RDB007, Forca Inter, Mind Over Mata and Chazza.

Forca Inter also topped Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing and Early Bird leagues. In the Early Bird league, 349 managers remains after 200 were knocked out, while in the Last Man Standing League, 995 are left after 43 Fantasy managers were sent packing. Entries are still open for the Early Bird League.

In the FFS UEFA leagues, Tommy Tour, the manager of Real Madrid, registered the highest score of the round, with a haul of 75 points.

The most closely fought battle in the week was in their Bundesliga league where The Shadow beat Jack off Attack by just one point. Elsewhere in their leagues , The Light Knight’s Norwich continued to maintain a stronghold on FFS UEFA’s weekly Order of Extreme Valour Award, opted to those who make the most left field choices. He opted for a 5-2-3 formation, which saw both Leighton Baines and Emmanuele Giaccherini pitching in with nine points each. His cumulative score, 67 points, was more than enough to beat the dullard team of his unfortunate opponent Jonty by 11 points.

Some late FFS UEFA news that missed last week’s round up from Gameweek 1 involved the group’s second Super Cup, in which 2012/13’s Europa League winner Acquafresca emerged triumphant 88-76 against last season’s Champions League winner MJ6987.

Meanwhile, the The FFS UEFA Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) comes to a grand finale this week with the TWS End of Season Party on Monday  September 2nd at 20:00 BST, in which team vacancies will be filled by auto-select in a live interactive draw, leaving each team’s fate up to their random number selection. The Shadow‘s Norwich is hotly pursued by a chasing pack of Zep‘s Arsenal, PeppieandFelix‘s Fulham and 4Vets‘ Liverpool. FFS UEFA also tell us that a brand new competition will be launched immediately after the TWS concludes.

In Doosra and Ginkapo’s It’s a Long and Winding Road competition the main league leader is still Back on the Horse. Meanwhile, the leaders of their H2H leagues are: TommyTour, Turbo Dog, MsRed19, Beric, Doolittle, Dino, Konig Luther.

Ignore all the stuff in the press designed to boost his confidence. Negredo just looks at the goal and he scores, while Aguero is just quality. When the going gets tough, pellegrini will play his best players.

    SQUAD BALANCE

Do you ever put the fixtures and form (what little of it there is to actually examine ATM) to one side and just look purely at the balance of your squad. In an ideal world, would the balance of your 100m fantasy football team look something like this:

    Gk - 9.5m (4.75m p.p)
    Better understood as 5m & 4.5m or 5.5m & 4m

    Df - 24.5m (4.9m p.p)
    Better understood as something like 6m, 5m, 5m, 4.5m, 4m

    Md - 39m (7.8m p.p)
    For example: 9m, 9m, 9m, 7m, 5m

    St - 27m (9m p.p)
And the rather neat example: 9m, 9m, 9m

I often find this is a good starting point for any wildcard. You could even throw one together quickly now using these guidlines and a bit of tinkering:

    Mig & 4m write off
    Zaba(+0.1) Coleman (+0.3) Collins (-0.5) Fonte Chester
    Silva (+0.2) Walcott (+0.5) Nolan (-1.9) Paulinho Brady (+0.5)
    Sturridge (+0.1) Benteke (+0.1) Soldado (+0.6m)

From that point it is just a case of moving your pots and pans around to try and catch as many leaks as possible. I have went for one less premium mid there but some may prefer a cheaper defence (downgrade Zaba to upgrade Nolan) while some may prefer one less premium striker (downgrade any to Lambert or Dzeko).

For me the key thing is that every team is going to need a Nolan OR a Dzeko OR a Lambert OR a crap defender in place of a premium one or some kind of sacrifice. That is the main decision. I don't particularly accept those teams that have Barkley or Brady (or both together) as their 4th mid. For those going with RVP they are going to have to adopt 2 or 3 of those options.

      Nice post, IT.
Squad balance rarely come into my thinking if I'm honest. I don't mind taking a -4 to redress the balance, and I do often.
I finally decided that I want RVP for GW4 ->9 (at least), so I've taken a hit this week to achieve that.
My squad will probably be very UNbalanced for a while, but hey, ho.
I hate having him in there, but that's part of FPL life.

Good for you. If you are lucky enough to get RVP during a fruitful streak AND opt for the right value players you could be in for a very successful first half of the season. Unfortunately the inverse of that is true also.

I'm on wildcard at the minute due to horrendous absentees this week and this balance is something that I can't quite crack.

Agree on the last bit. Anyone with RVP needs to find the value in the 7m-8m price range for midfielders and forwards, and 5-5.5m defenders.

Players like Nolan and Lambert,as you say, that can keep the points rolling in consistently. They don't have to match the more expensive options but they have to keep the points difference to a manageable level, preferably a comparable negative points difference to the positive points difference between RVP and the other forwards.

That is my plan anyway. A lot reading on RVP to justify that outley, but I still think you can have a decent balanced squad with him in it.

      Great angle.

The sacrifice I have made is no premium defender (Coleman and Toure most expensive at 5.0s) and no Mignolet (two 4.5s). So I have made the savings across the defence.

I don't whenever Barkley or Kasami is one of them. It's just too risky. My opinion is that you shouldn't just change a premium 3rd mid into a crap 5th mid. This isn't an option for me.

To explain, your 1st and 2nd MFs should nearly always be premium. Your 4th should be a mid price value MF and your 5th (if you plan to play 3-4-3) should be a cheap budget emergency MF. The room for manouevre is therefore in the 3rd MF spot where you can get another premium or go for a mid price value MF. I don't accept teams that put another cheap budget emergency MF in this spot.

Teams with RVP seems to be rife with this and in my opinion it's better to have a mid price MF and make some downgrades in defence rather than get in one of the cheap budget MFs instead of a premium.

good analysis 🙂 The problem with having RVP this year is the fact that no solid 6.5-7.0 midfielders have emerged. Last year Michu and Fellaini were firing from GW1 itself and were really solid picks almost throughout. As soon as such options emerge, RVP teams will start to look balanced.

I pretty much agree with that apart from you forgot to say "yet". "no solid 6.5-7.0 midfielders have emerged... yet"

If you're going RVP, you need to pre-empt who those mid-price midfield powerhouses will be. It is very tough.

As an new player to FPL this season and a new guy to this site I don't really feel I can offer much insight.

      But I'll have a crack.

It is undeniably the best starting point for your squad at the start of a season.

With only pre-season form to go on, for me, this season, I was suckered into some questionable choices based on form. And a more balanced starting squad would've been a better starting point more than likely, in hindsight. Or possibly only accepting the form of those who were proven players prior to any form they began showing in pre-season. However saying that, I imagine form will become an increasingly important factor as the season progresses.

Fixtures on the other hand I believe to be important throughout the season. Sure you'll hit bumpy patches where one team pulls off a bit of a shock (CarVsManC) But on the whole I think fixtures help to narrow down selections of players and captaincy for the entire season.

I don't think either should be entirely set aside, but they gather or lose importance depending on the time of the season.

Valid point (up-voted) and for clarity I don't mean "put to one side" as ignored altogether. Just that I am casting the magnifying glass over another part of the overall strategy of Fantasy Football i.e. squad selection.

I agree form becomes so much more important a few weeks or month into the season and fixtures always hold weight even though its unfashionable to say that around these parts these days.

This assumes that the points balance between the positions will be the same as last year, with midfielders doing very well (as well as strikers), while defence score lower points per million spent. However, this is not the case, the balance often shift a bit between season. This season might be a defenders year (most value points per million), as the start of the season suggest. Which implies having 4 good defenders is a more valuable strategy!

      Any thoughts?

Bit tricky, see of the two promoted clubs I'd prefer to get Hull defenders as Bruce can grind out those 1-0 wins a la Norwich. Bought a whole new defence and happy to park the bus. But clearly Crystal Palace have a much better fixture. I wouldn't sell Terry either as I see him being a very useful asset to keep over the season giving you a big stream of 8s going by the bonus so far.

I guess like you say, you potentially have 4 players out which means you'd field 10. Maybe the wrong time to sell Morrison because this might be when he starts and comes good. So it's gotta be one of Terry and Brayford gone. Oh well, the least bad option is Brayford > Ward.

Free tip number 6: Spend your full 100m budget. Don't leave any money in bank. I heard those bankers are real bastards and will lose it all.

Anything need to be done urgently to this? Have had Mannone, Brayford and R.Morrison since the start and there dropping in price and probably will keep doing so but I don't want to take hits taking them out?

    Boruc, (Mannone)
    Coleman, Collins, Nastasic, (Toure), (Brayford)
    Silva, Michu, Walcott, Mirallas, (R.Morrison)
    Lambert, Soldado, Sturridge

Also have the Toure problem. I'd like to keep him has there been any more news on how long he is out for? Is he going to start dropping also?

Have a vasectomy after you've had 2 kids. I have 3 and I love them all dearly, but my house is like a fukkking bombsite.
