With the injuries to key Premier League midfielders throughout the top-flight continuing to rack up by the week right now, Aston Villa’s run of upcoming fixtures (WOL, eve, NEW, whm, STK, wba, WIG) looks likely to offer further chances for the in-form and injury-free pair of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing to terrorise opposition defences.

Gerard Houllier’s side sit just two points above the drop zone and, with the likes of fellow strugglers Wolves and West Ham coming into form at this critical stage of the season, desperately need to start producing the goods if they are to guarantee survival. With just one clean sheet since gameweek 11, there‘s clearly little security at the back, a point Houllier has been critical of lately. Certainly, recent off-field events have indicated that all is not well amongst the club’s defenders, a fact Houllier must rectify as his side prepare for a crucial run-in.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Lads...considering pulling the WC out, thoughts?

    Foster - Begovic
    Kolarov - Coleman - R Johnson - Jara - Djourou
    VDV - Nani - Nasri - Adam - A Young
    Tevez - Berbatov - Odemwingie

Have a number of injuries and rotation risks.

Thanks Tosey....appreciate your opinion. Maybe not needed then.

Hmm could be a good plan. Possibly pull it out next week.

Looking at Lampard - Luiz - Walker - RVP. Going to struggle to bring them in.

Who do you think i should be looking to replace?

well if i had a wildcard for next week my defence would be

          foster/ gomes
          carr/johnson/luiz/dawson/walker

thats where im heading with mine

foster carr johnson rotate perfectly with spurs and brum. then just play luiz every week

most people dont like the trebling up/rotation idea tho

u need lampard, im not going for rvp myself but the majority are so im guessing im probably wrong on that one!!

I agree with most said, also not sure on trebling up on Defenders. But the rewards could be great.

I chose Fabs over RVP earlier, so not going to lose out on him this time.

Lampard is just so damn expensive!

Think Kolarov/Coleman/Djourou/Jara/Young/Tevez/Odemwingie/Berbatov are all looking to be replaced.

I didn't get this. People smarter than me didn't get it. here it is:-

On Bruces' price is right, there are three boxes. In one is a GOLD CHEST, behind the other 2 are EGGS.

You pick box 2, Brucey shows you what you could've won by opening box 3.... Eggs.

Left with box 1 & 2 he gives you the option to switch boxes.

    Should you do it ?

Not quite. It is now 67%:33% in favour of the other box. So yes, always swap.

          It's 50%.

There is no distinction statistically between the box you chose and the one left that you didn't choose. No other information is available. Therefore it's 50/50, where previously it was 33/33/33.

hopefully my comment below answers your point.

You are right that there is no extra information, but when the question is normally stated, it is assumed that you know how the original game show worked, where they always shown you a losing box (that you didn't pick). This IS extra information and INFORMATION CHANGES PROBABILITIES.

Yes I realise now what he was saying and that I was disagreeing with my own point!

Your original pick is 67% likely to have been the wrong one, therefore the other box (now we know that the third contained an egg) becomes 67% likely to be the one you want.

The key point in the Monty Hall problem is that the host knows where the chest is, and will always show you the dud after you pick. If that's the case here (not clear), then it is 67%.

The Key point is that Bruce is always going to show you a box with eggs in (that is not the one you picked) after you pick.

If you don't know this, you have no reason to think the answer is that you should swap, as Bruce could have randomly picked a box that happened to contain eggs, in which case you would have a 50/50 chance with either remaining box.

In the case that you know Bruce was always going to show you a box with eggs in it (that is not the one you picked), then by changing your mind, you now have a 2/3 chance of getting the gold chest.

      WHY?

There are two possible scenarios: 1.) Your original pick was correct, with probability 1/3
2.) Your original pick was incorrect, with probability 2/3.

In case 1.) if you swap, you are going to lose
In case 2.) (think about it with boxes in front of you) if you swap, you are always going to win.

Therefore, if you swap you have a 2/3 chance of picking the gold box.

Yes you should switch as the gold is in 1 and egg is in 2.

Answer was given in the question.

Or am i barking up the wrong tree again?

You can interpret the question like that. But I presume that it is not meant that like that.

      But you should switch.

The reason i was swayed by this over the mathematical side of the answer was i thought the act of choosing and the fact its hidden renders the decision itself pointless.

So even going from a 66% to 50% chance of failure doesnt mean you should change - if you pick the correct box to begin with which you have a 33% chance of then choosing the switch hinders you

So in such a blind - blind situation the stats moving more or less in your favour mean nothing. Since it can influence your choice - to choose right or wrong.

But could be a barking etc....

But then again moving from 33% -50% means over time if you were to repeat this choice over a prolonged period then it would favor you statistically doing better by changing.

But then again you have only got to do it once which leaves the possibility for failure equally due to only one trial.

Hmmmm need to see the answer to this.....

Yes this is what i said but if its a one off blind test then you still have as much chance to begin with

3 doors, you choose one and one is eliminated. leaving 2.
If you change everytime then doing this means its 50:50 to still get the wrong one.

and this 2/3 answer, even if you do not switch its still 2/3 .

I only see it working in repeat situations not on this one off. Statistically yes i see the point from 33 -50% but this only takes effect upon repeat trials. No? Bah im prob talking nonsense as ive been up for 8 hours ðŸ™

What would people recommend with my strikers this week?
    Tevez, Zigic, Bendtner

Think I may well play 4-5-1 as I have 4 defenders at home so could escape without a hit this week.
Don't have enough in the bank to do Tevez > Rooney so would either be:
    Tevez > RVP
or Bendtner > Wellbeck and Tevez > Rooney (4pt hit)

The answer is you SHOULD switch.

The probability has gone from 1 in 3 -> 2 in 3 as the provbability must add to 1.

So by switching you double the odds of winning!

another way to look at it is...

there is a 1 in 3 that your box is the winner and 2 in 3 that one of the others is the winner. By opening one of the other boxes and showing it to be a loser you haven't changed anything. So switching box definitely means switching from 1 in 3 to 2 in 3.

In deal or no deal the other boxes are opened randomly. In Monty Hall (or the original question here) the box opened is definitely a losing box. That's where the extra info is coming from to help you. Anyway, you don't need to prove it with Maths, just do the experiment yourself a few hundred times 🙂 In fact didn't someone like James May do it on one of his shows?

    Walker - Smalling - Coleman

Young A - Adam - Van der Vaart - Nani

    Tevez - Rooney(C) - Van Persie

    Subs
    Al-Habsi - Barton - Luiz - Djourou

I realy want to get Lampard in, but that would mean sacrificing Tevez. Problem with that is my clostest rivals all have tevez so I don't want tevez to start scoring with all of them having him in their sides.

Do I Get rid of Tevez + Barton for Lampard + Carrol? Or just stick with the same side and try and keep my 110 point lead for untill the rest of the season?
