Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

Anyone think Chiriches will start over Dawson?

Also, apart from Collins, who's the best 4.5 def to go for?

My Team at the moment after week 3 ...

    Migs (Davis)
    Coleman-Ivan-Collins (Whittaker or Chester)
    Coutinho-Silva-Brady(Colback, Tonev)
    Benteke - RVP - Soldado

I have 1.5 in the bank.

Should I transfer Tonev for Pablo Hernandez at 6.1 - leaving my bank at 0.0?

Or use that 1.5 to upgrade my DEF? I was thinking of going 4-3-3 but if I have MIDS of Coutinho-Silva-Pablo-Brady, that's not bad. And then my D would be Coleman-Ivanovic-Collins.

What do ya think? Go for Pablo Hernandez for he jumps to 6.2? Will he rise again before Week 5?

So this is a question for Sun Dreamteam

I got this set-up atm and was wondering which midfielder you guys believe would best fill this spot?

    Mignolet
    Zaba// Walker// Gibbs// Chico
    X // Walcott // Mirallas
    Sturridge// Saldado// Van Persie

I had Hazard in the X slot but I want to change him.. I now got 5.0mil to use

The question is who to fill that slot? I fancied either Gerrard, Coutinho, Oscar, Lamela, Ben Arfa or maybe a player like Nolan?

    All help is appreciated!

ENR: Giroud or Benteke? Was planning on Tekkers til the Ozil transfer. When I look at Arsenal's fixtures, I am thinkign I would rather have Giroud than Tekkers, then get Tekkers in later for Soldado (if soldado flops)

Giroud has form and fixtures wheras Benteke just has form. Thoughts?

Great week for you again bud, considering Silva failed for us.

It's too tough to call no doubt but got to say Giroud for form and fixtures. Umlaut has signed as well, so should be a big boost. That extra cash could be crucial.

As you say, you could swap Penaldo for Tekkers later.

It was a good week.....not a great week. I guess when your captain fails, getting to 50 is good. I still got a red arrow, though! also, against all my advice on here, I played Ward over Murner.....stupid me.

Murner is a goal threaT? Too bad. Ward played great against Sunderland, they really deserved a cleanie. It was almost the right decision. Everyone on here said Turner was the better pick, but Norwich's defense looked shambolic in the first 2 weeks. I guess Bassong makes a difference.

Fans seem to think AVB has to move to a 4231 with Eriksen in the hole, that should really help soldado's cause. It's only a matter of time as he's quality but it could be a matter of a few GWs. Every striker spot seems gold at the moment.

Did consider Aguero but the fixtures are pretty poor tbh. Also Negredo seems the real FPL deal no?

            Concerned about Snoddy though.

Zaba doesn't have the best of fixtures coming up, Vidic is always a fitness worry and Agger probably not a priority vs swa away?

You don't fancy Spurs defence? Walker at 6.0 looks great value with his threat going forward too. Allows for an easy switch to Chelsea defender when the fixtures get better.

Honestly, I don't have much faith in my team after Sunday 🙁

Fixtures are good, for sure. Its just hard to be super optimistic.

If you're worried about Snoddy, get Pablo: natural replacement!

Even so, captaincy in 6 and 8 look easy without RVP

Vidic is a fitness worry, but hes nailed on when healthy, and an AWESOME set piece threat. you can't play this game nervous about injuries, or wed never buy RVP.

              City's fixtures aren't great, admittedly.

Not convinced about Pablo man. Michu should come into his own very soon I reckon, just trying to get ahead of the game. Could very well go wrong.

Check out this crazy WC team I can get:
    Mig, Boruc
    Vert, Vidic, Zab, Coleman, Ivanovic
Ozil, Lamps, Brady, (£10.7m to spend on two more midfield cheapsters)
    Sturridge, Benteke, Lukaku

Obviously Lukaku won't play GW4 and I won't go with this team probably but I thought it looked awesome on paper.

Yeah fair enough... my only argument against RVP is how else you could spend that coin! For example you might wait a week, see how both RVP and Lukaku go... if they're likely to be around the mark in terms of output you could get a premium midfield instead of a pine-sitter?

What do you all think? Reading everyone's thoughts all day is making me consider these options:

    - no transfers, have 2 FTs next week
    - Coutinho to Hazard
    - Coutinho to Lamela
    - Coutinho to P Hernandez & Dzeko to Benteke for -4 (which leave money in the bank to upgrade any of 3 strikers to Suarez)

    Team:

    Cech Boruc
    Toure Coleman Debuchy Shaw MTurner
Coutinho Michu Walcott Ben Arfa Barkley
    Soldado Giroud Dzeko

But if I don't do it now, I miss his 0.2 rise - and he seems like a seasons keeper when I get him.

Walker lost corners to Lemala soon as Lemala walked on the pitch last game. Not sure he is going to be a valuable with all the new additions to the team.

Find a way to trim it to -8.

And you'll be happier if you can wait until after international matches are done on the 10th to make sure you don't transfer someone who gets hurt over the break.

The Coutinho Dzeko to Brady Benteke is definitely on. So -4 is absolute.

Yeah while he lost the set pieces but Tottenham have the fixture and one of the best defensive stats so far. Walker loves going forward which can mean baps if he gets the odd assist and CS.

might be that you have too much FPL history in your head

you are the one saying midfielders are much less valuable than they used to be, so assemble the strikers and defender you want, and then fill in the midfield with fodder the way you used to fill in the last two defender positions with fodder

did you see Michael Jordan's posts today? he assembled a team that is supposed to score 330+ points over the next 6 weeks on rate my team; he had only one premium midfielder and four cheapies

With Rooney seemingly back n favor, if you want to feel better about going without RVP, look at RVP's goal production from open play the second half of last season when both he and Rooney played together. To feel even better, try throwing out the hat trick against Villa and see how much you like RVP's production.

    Bump..

Go for Pablo Hernandez before he jumps to 6.2? Will he rise again before Week 5?

Does anyone here watch ligue1?! The hype surrounding Sakho has been ridiculous. People in France debate if he is better than yanga-mbiwa. He doesn't yet have the skill/composure to play the ball out from the back.

Guarantee if he has one good game people will call him the new sol Campbell. Same way Harry hotspur talked about capoue looking like he might be the new vieira after one game and having probably watched some tacky youtube compilation.

Though how would you compare him against the other Pool CBs?

Is Sakho better than Toure and Skrtel? Quite easily
Is Sakho better than Agger? Arguments can be made for both but Sakho could be the physical presence Pool need at the back (ala Kolo)

I must admit I watch ZERO Ligue 1 football. But I trust the LFC scouting system since that muppet Camolli was ditched. Mostly good signings (apart from Borini)
If we paid 15m for him, he will surely be a starter (in a week or two) in a defence that's looking rock-solid, so far.

That's got to be getting close to what the non-RVP wild card template is going to look like.

Of course, what you should be doing now is buying players who might rise .2 that you can sell by the 13th for a .1 profit, and then bring in those players (provided they themselves are not about to rise in price).

      Good model for a 4-3-3 non-RVP team.
