With the gameweek safely locked away for posterity, Members can take time out to plunder their OPTA data to fully assess the key performers.

Once again we’ve put in the leg work for you, mining the statistics to answer some vital gameweek questions – did Rafael van der Vaart and Samir Nasri have off days? Did Robin Van Persie deserve yet another set of Bonus Points? And just how good was David Luiz?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Oh no. AP if you're there mate, wake up. You'd rather fletcher than modric 😕 worse signing since veron 😕 😕 Modric would be your best player if he signed. I've said all season I rate him higher than vdv and bale and he'd walk into any side in the England. Wake up son! 😛

i understand his point that it's not just a simple modric is better than fletcher thing but fletcher is better suited to the current man utd side. don't agree with it, but do understand it

obviously the style would be adapted to adopt a world class midfielder, and as you say modric is very versatile.

Erm ... so the style of United would be shifted to adapt to Modric? Seriously?

I admit, though no one cares or asked, that I agree with AP. Frankly, I think Modric benefits from being in a Tot midfield -- he's good, but 'world class' cheapens the designation.

[Not, of course, that Fletcher is, either]

Ah right, is this the Modric for United call again.
He isn't suited to a 4-4-2 which means he isn't suitable for United. Same with Veron, Fergie signed him and then didn't know what to do with him. You could argue that Veron should have adapted if he was good enough, but really no, it was a bad transfer. Basically he was the last creative midfielder Fergie signed.

surely modric has been playing in a 4-4-2 for the last year (4-4-1-1 potato potato). is there soemthing i'm missing here? during which time tottenham rose to a 4th place side, champions league contenders and modric is now being praised left, right and centre

      I'm here + wide awake!

As i said, Modric is a far better footballer, absolutely no doubt about it. But Fletcher's defensive duties and general cover every blade mentality is crucial to our team at the moment. He's missed when he's not in the team. It's why i love Anderson so much too. Yeah, he can't shoot and he's got a fat ass, but he's got so much energy and drive when he isn't on the injury table, coupled with some silky samba skills.

" Fletcher’s defensive duties and general cover every blade mentality "

i think you , along with alot of other people in the fantasy world forget that those traits MAkE fletcher a footballer of a certain degree- ie, just cos he does that, doesnt make him a worse footballer than modric.

Bottom line is Modric has fu.ck all major impact in games, id rather 2 fletchers in my football team than three modric's.

thats FOOTBALL team- yep, that stuff that includes " Fletcher’s defensive duties and general cover every blade mentality ".

Oh and Anderson is a fat joke. Those faces he involuntarily pulls are deeply unnerving also

oh i am agreeing. Fantasy world as in fantasy football world..sort of. Im just pointing out above in general that fletcher's perceived 'non-footballing' traits (for want of a beter designation) are the very things that would MAKE him a beter and more valuable player in my team than Modric.

                +1, +1 all 'round.

Now, if I was starting a Boys Band, and needing some wispy, long-haired, non-threatening lad for the girls to swoon over --- then, maybe, Modric.

I'm only slightly joking when I say I'd rather O'Shea. And, BTW, I like Modric ... just don't understand where all the crazy love for him is coming from. He didn't exactly perform world-class last week.

SAF has been extremely guilty of misusing Anderson. At Porto he was very much an attacking midfielder, but Fergie has primarily used him as a combative centre mid who sticks to the opposition danger man. He was brilliant in this role in his first season (merking Gerrard and Fabs in the process) but his schooling from Iniesta and Xavi has still really knocked his confidence i think. Thankfully SAF has returned him to an attacking role this year but his attitude still needs sorting out and he keeps getting frustrating knocks.

I agree with Granville - legends for me are people like Ian Rush, Roy Keane, Schmikes (the dog in Corry not the keeper), Alan Shearer etc. Playing to an exceptional level for a good length of time.
I do agree Lucas was sometimes the kicking boy for the general disdain people had for Liverpool's less than exciting football under the Rafa regime. He's not a bad player.

People generally get over frothy over their own players - some Man Utd fans more so than the norm. Which is sort of odd if you think about it, surely supporting a team which has been packed with truly talented brilliant players would mean you'd have a proportionately extremely high standard of expectation of current players.
                    Maybe that's too logical. 🙂

Well Sammy, you could argue that 40 goal Ronaldo got 40 goals due to the amount of work his team mates put in for him not bothering to ever track back or defend. Rooney, Fletcher and Anderson being the prime candidates.

In fergie's current 4-4-2 formation modric can play next to fletcher, he's shown this season he can play the deep lying role better than carrick in every aspect. In a 4-5-1 he could play the AM role or on the left. He's much more versatile than veron and also has a much better attitude and willingness to work hard in any position. IMO there's no modric wouldn't make utd a much better football team however he's used.

not sure the best way to do it. team of 11 i've hedged my bets with bopara and clarke so best case scenario i only need to make 2 transfers, worst case scenario i have to make 9 and only have 1 left for the final.

i see it as you have to guess 6 results and as long as you get at least 3 of them right the 10 transfers should last comfortably. if more come off then you'll have the luxury of switching round a bowler just for the one game for example

See I always think fecking around like that is going to lead to trouble - like when you see people in South Africa etc chumming the water with blood to attract sharks then lowering a cage full of holiday makers into the water.
Surely that will have a Pavlovian effect

Yep, 50 thousand dollar fine now for anyone caught feeding the fish. They said that little kids feeding bread to the fish created vibrations which attracted the sharks to shore. Crazy.

Hill's have opened a book on when Torres, Andy Carroll and Edin Dzeko will finally get off the mark in the Premier League.

    Shots: 18
    Shots on target: 3

    Andy Carroll (Liverpool)
    Games: 2
    Shots: 5
    Shots on target: 3

    Fernando Torres (Chelsea)
    Games: 5
    Shots: 10
    Shots on target: 1

Hmmmm tough one, I'd put my cash on Dzeko though - Sunderland can struggle against a big target man.
January transfers are always chancy, I still think each of those players will be good next season.

Dzeko looks like a bust to me. He is totally hampered by his lack of pace, and unless you have oodles of guile and time on the ball you will never make it in this league. His best chance is in a 2 up front but that means their best player Tevez is sacrificed to play a deeper role.

Not impressed with him. Apparently the City players aren't either. I read something that he's awful in training. Not a good sign for Mancini who was desperate for him. He'd be in trouble if they didn't have so much money.

Really? I had high hopes for him, I thought he'd fit right in and be a good powerful striker in the Shearer mould. Ach well.
I'd definitely rather have Dzeko than Balotelli though 🙂

Haven't really thought about it properly, but is there actually any substance behind the 'taking time to settle' thing for strikers with respect to coming over from another league? RVN, Suarez, Torres, Tevez all did well as soon as they got here (I think). People would be all over the Torres needing time to adjust to premier league excuse if he'd just joined Chelsea from At Madrid rather than Liverpool

Still trying to figure out why the hell Capello hasn't called up Smalling. Walker has played just as little first team football, is u21 but is in the squad. Can he say with a straight face that Lescott and Cahill have played better?

Looking back on the u21 championship a few years back. Neuer, Hummels, Khedira and Ozil were all playing and who have easily stepped up to the first team.

            http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/england/5606074/England-U21-1-Germany-U21-1-match-report.html

Yet Capello is picking the same middle of the road hackers trying to grind out a result vs Wales. Minus Wilshere and Hart obviously. It's depressing! I agree with Attila, the old guard have had their chance and f*cked it up big time.

actually, i meant the banter on the international level. every1 just seems to dislike capello and that is probably it. back home, we dislike every opposition player lol

incase u arent aware, back in india every underperforming players home is thrown stones at n theres demonstrations outside their house, regardless of if they'd won a game for india 2 months ago.

i like the premier league arguments though, they're more to my liking.

As a Yank, seems to me the English have such a deep self-loathing stemming from their frustration at the international level that they can't get to steps 2 and 3 (criticism of their players/other teams) without getting past their 'woeful coaching' ...

I mean, they couldn't beat the US and finished second to us in the WC group. The shame and humiliation ... 😉

Ah I see! Well that's because we've been worn down to little nubs of depression. Every major tournament the media hypes us up to the point where some of it sinks in, you start to think "maybe this time" but no, the team plays shite. They go home with tail between legs like the spineless curs they are.
Utterly depressing, particularly if like me, you are English living abroad where the locals are not particularly predisposed to England and revel in them getting humiliated.

I dont think its the coach at all, capello is a fantastic manager. Our players just simply cannot play together. I dont know the reason and they dont either. Noone does. My suggestions (which are probably wrong) are that its because the players believe their own hype so dont try hard enough. The players simply dont like each other. The players arent proud to be english.

It's not that they can't play together, the players are just nowhere near as good as in spain, brazil etc. The hype is not justified so it wouldn't matter if they bought into it or not.

Jafalad, Are you still in FFS Cup? I think I made it through first round thanks to "no hit", my opp took 8 pts hit made it easier for me to squeze through. 🙂

Oh dear, must be some kind of disaster week for you, kind of like Ars being knock out of 3 cup in a week. Well, I hope to get lucky and try to go as far as I can. I still have 1 wc left any suggestion of when I should use it?

        At present my team is

        Foster Mignolet

Walker, Assou E. Luiz, Smalling and Coleman
O Hara, Gardner, VDV, Nasri and Nani
        Tevez, Rooney and RVP

Ideally I wanted Adam in, but can not afford him- I thought about the three switches above in light of the fact Tevez might not be back in a fortnight

Firstly I would like to apologise to everyone for transferring Ashley Young into my team...he's clocked a 0 and a 1 since he came into my team..HAHA...with that aside...what is everyone thinking in terms of alternatives?

Would Downing still be an option or are Villa losing the plot now?

Dempsey springs to mind or a drastic drop in value for say Jarvis/O'Hara or someone around there...

Is anyone else sitting with the same issue regarding Young?

    Thanks

Pistol - yes, I have Young. Was lucky enough to get him in 3 gameweeks ago when he scored 18 odd pts. The he missed a peno and scored 0. That could have been 7. I beleive he also hit the crossbar this last gw, so it could have been a lot different had those tw ogoals have gone in.

It's not as if he is not on form like Drogba was early in the season. He does tie up lots of cash though.

I have defensive issues though, and Im waiting to see og Kelly will be back in the Livpool side vs WBA before making trsfrs.

The problem with Villa (and Young) is that they are very incosistent and 8.5M is a lot of cash being tied up in a player playing for a club fighting for survival.

Villa's fixtures are too good to ignore though. I'm going to keep Young for the season although Downing looks the better option at the moment. I have more pressing transfers to do elsewhere.

I have same issues with Bent.

Think I will get rid though. Suarez appears to offer more for the same price now.

rather, who is the best forward for 4.5 or under? I want Luiz in my team, and I'd wait a few weeks were it not for the fact that his price is going to rocket, making him unaffordable...

        Thinking of him myself.

Seems to get starts. Only £4m so wouldn't exactly play every week, especially if you have 5 mids you can play.

I prefer 3-5-2 anyway as cheaper mids are more likely to get bonus points and assists than cheap strikers.

So, getting Hoillet should clear the way for you to get a top tier starter you can play every week.

Im going to sell Zigic - worst buy EVER - for Hoillet to free up funds for buying Luiz. Means I dont have to buy him this week as Hoillet is sooooo cheap
