Injuries to some of the Premier League’s biggest stars have dominated discussion amongst the community, with wildcards and hits falling like confetti. We also catch up on those in far better health in our community leagues.

Hottest Topic

Greenwindmill posed a timely question this week. Given injuries to Christian Benteke and Theo Walcott (and with Robin Van Persie still a doubt for the weekend), our moderator contemplated just how we judge whether a hit is worthwhile or not. Among those to answer was Brutus619, who puts forward a good case for hits and an even better case for inclusion in a forthcoming Scoutcast Full Jonty.

Many Fantasy Football managers almost fainted when they saw Robin Van Persie had been handed a 14m price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season. But even though other strikers such as Olivier Giroud have outscored him for a fraction of his price, Jonny believes his price may have been perfect. His reasoning is that despite a volatile market in the last two weeks  in the FPL game, RVP’s ownership has remained relatively steady. Could he remain 14m for the rest of the season? Even though he missed last Sunday’s Manchester derby, RVP has still not dropped in price this week.

For those considering drafting in Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for the likes of Van Persie or Benteke, Blue Lion’s post will prove fruitful reading. With another loan move under his belt the young striker looks prime for points, he argues. This was certainly the case against West Ham.

Wakey’s regular Falling Stars posts offer a welcome antidote to those of us with jerky knees, looking to transfer out poor performers. Each week he profiles a selection of players who have dropped in value to show how sometimes it is worth hanging on to unfashionable players. Stephane Sessegnon, who is 0.3m cheaper than his starting price, is among his pick of the Gameweek 5 Falling Stars.

HeelsOverHead has been delving into the history books to see which of the current crop of Premier League players have the best track record of hattricks and braces. Turns out there are nine current Premier League players who managed a hat-trick last season. Find out who they are here.

The penny has long since dropped that the bonus point system favours defenders. But could this mean we experience the first season where defenders become the highest scorers in FPL? Going into Gameweek 5 Ryan found that nine teams had a defender as their highest scoring player. Will this still be the case at the end of the season?

One of this week’s most popular hot topics, with 30 votes at the time of writing, was Portsmouth Bubblejet’s epic look at the best rotation options over the coming weeks. Certainly plenty to ponder there as we look to prepare our teams for the weeks ahead.

Community Leagues

HeelsOverHeads’ Worst To First – 2 Million+ Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, now has five out of the 23 teams that entered in the top 1,000,000. Bales of Fury continues to lead the league with an overall rank of 344,013.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life competition the three league leaders are Forca, Daniel and Thomass.

Meanwhile, the five league leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s All Things…. leagues are TheRealAVB, Tommy Tour, LawnDart, Mind over Mata and Binij.

LawnDart topped Torres Magic’s Early Bird league with a score of 64. Just 14 survivors remain, but entry is still open for more to join. In his Last Man Standing league 847 are left.

Those successfully traversing the It’s A Long And Winding Road (LAWR) H2H leagues are TommyTour59, Turbo Dog, IAmSuarez, Beric, Super Hans, ManAmongst and DonTheSpecialOne. TommyTour59 is also the LAWR main league leader.

Elsewhere, the 552-strong UEFA FFS FA Cup kicks off this week with its preliminary round. Team allocations and the Preliminary Round Draw will be posted on the FFS Uefa website by Friday, Sept 27.

In a 3-5-2 he's nailed on @ RCB. in a 4-4-2 i'd say he and sakho look the best bet at startin as the CB pairing (liverpool forums reckon agger may get the drop and skrtel surely will) as kelly is back and could take the RB spot until GJ returns. Liverpool gonna stick with the 3-5-2 though to accomodate Suarez and Sturridge most games

I'd say your next transfer should be Soldado -> Suarez/Sturridge, not sure it's wroth a hit though.

that was in the plans originally but he didnt show much last night IMO, sturridge looked like he had 2 left feet, I was thinking to leave soldado for 1 more week (had him since GW1!) and if he doesnt perform then ship him out but I dont know whether I should ship him out for a lower priced striker as I think with Rooney and Giroud I have got 2 big hitters there and upgrade my 4th Mid? or maybe even my 4th Defender?

Did my changes last night. Avoided the WC and got Rooney for RVP and Baines in for Murner for a hit.

Still got Theo though. Fortunately his price hasn't dropped yet but he's in the low 80's so I suspect he's going to fall today or tomorrow.

Way I see it is that, right now, Baines is like a premium mid anyway. FK's, pens, goals, assists and BAPs all in his locker.

Just glad to be rid of RVP to be honest with you. Expensive albatross in FPL terms this season.

What do we look for in a striker? I would like to suggest a semi scientific method to evaluate strikers.

Basically, we look for 9 elements with different weighting:

A - quality - most important - how good of a striker he is? scale of 1 to 7 - great proven goal scorer is what we look for - Starting with 1 point for boselli, 2 for chamak, and ending with 6 to soldado/benteke and 7 for Rvp and Suarez

Next four are weighted 1 to 5:

B - how good is his team? Will they score in buckets like arsenal or struggle like Norwich? a scale of 1 to 5 is adequate here - please note we only talk attacking quality here.
C - fixtures - look at the next 5-6 games and give 1 point to 5 based on strength of fixtures
D- rotation and game time - again from 1 to 5 - for example lets take the city strikers - juvetic will get 1 as he is a sure sub who rarely plays more than 20 minutes, dzeko is now 2 (a sub who sometimes plays more) negredo will be 3 as he is now a starter but sometimes dropped, and kun will be 4 as he is almost a sure starter but in a team with four good strikers. 5 is reserved to Rvp or benteke.
E - form - it's important to know if a player is on fire (5 points to benteke pre injury) or getting cold (1 point for Chelsea strikers, 2 only for soldado)

Next 3 smaller items rated 1 to 3:
F - penalties and free kicks - Rvp will get 3 of course, giroud might get 1, and Rooney will get 2 - second in line for penalties and with quite a bit free kicks duties.
G - injury prone - iron man Suarez will get 3 and his team mate Sturridge will get 1.
H - captain material - is he explosive or consistent? How are his baps? Yellow cards? In other words is he consistent and good with baps like Rvp (3 points) or explosive but problematic like baloteli was (1 point)?

Finished? You have a score? Great. Now the last one - add up to three points for bargain price and deduct up to three points if he is priced like Rvp.

Congratulations, you have a score. Now choose wisely.
    Lets go for two examples:

Giroud - 5 out of 7 for quality, 5 out of 5 for attacking quality of his team, 5 out of 5 for fixtures, 5 out of 5 for rotation, 5 out of 5 for form, 1 out of 3 for free kicks, 3 out of 3 for injuries, and 2 out of 3 for captain material - consistent, but rarely explosive.
Total - 30 points. Price is just about adequate so 30 points it is.

Sodado - 6 out of 7 for quality (many great seasons for Valencia and Spain), 4 out of 5 for attacking quality of his team, 5 out of 5 for fixtures, 4 out of 5 for nailed on (slight Defoe form worry), 2 out of 5 for form, 3 out of three for penalties, 3 for no injury issues, 1 out of three for captain (in principal he is 2, but with current form and being a card magnet it's difficult to justify)

    Total - 28 points minus 1 for price = 27 points.

That's it. I did it for a few players and results were more than logical. Sadly I'm to lazy to take the top 20 strikers and do a proper excell table, but Feel free to expand to other players 🙂

The thing is, there is some subjectivity in the scoring - form quality etc. is a judgement call to some extent - is soldado 5 or 6 in quality? Is sturridge 4 or 5 in form? Close calls sometimes - so your table might be slightly different than my table - but it's correct for YOU.

        Lets see
        Quality 7
        Team attacking - 4 (maybe even 3)
        Fixtures 5
        Rotation 5
Form - cant be more than 2 as its a complete unknown
        Free kicks 2
        Injury 3
        Captain 3

        Total 31 minus 2 for price = 29 points very close 🙂

Great stuff, would also be interested in the other players and whether it confirms who how I rate players and if not whether it is me or the system

I see game time as a factor on the overall rating e.g. Lukaku may rate well in a number of places but if he is only on 50% of the time I would basically halve his overall rating. I also see explosive as irrelevant compared to overall / average point generation unless it is predictable and the player is a flat track bully which is gold dust (e.g. home to Palace almost guarantees they will go to town)

Game time is 1 to 5, but obviously if you don't play your form is affected too, and other elements.
        So it's large enough IMO.
Explosive or consistent only applies for captain material - 2,2,2,2, 17, is far worse than 5,6,5,5,6
        For captain issues.

      Another relevant example - lukaku

      Quality - 5 out of 7
      Team 3 out of 5
      Fixtures 4 out of 5
Rotation - probably 4 (first choice but with competition)
Form 3 out of 5 on the way up
Free kicks - 1 all go to Baines
      Injury 3
      Captain 2

      Total 25 plus 2 for price = 27

      And now Rooney:

      Quality - 7 out of 7
Team 4 out of 5 (current form of team counts)
      Fixtures 5 out of 5
      Rotation - 5
      Form 4 out of 5
Free kicks - 3 while Rvp out, 2 while in - lets make it 2.5 now
      Injury 2
      Captain 3

Total 33 minus 2 for price = 31 highest so far.

Here's the thing. We have a fair amount of data on attacking stats which is more scientific than this approach. To score you need a shot on target, to get a shot on target you need to shoot, and to shoot you need to have the ball in an advanced position. The rotation factor is particularly flawed as the key determinant for getting the ball in advanced positions is being on the pitch. It's a multiplicative factor, not additive.

The approach you've set out feels like an attempt to make an objective decision but it uses so many subjective factors that it may simply turn into a question of which player you think is best. So we're back to a subjective view.

Yes, you have some good points. However, stats alone can be problematic - stats won't tell you about future fixtures for example.
It's an attempt to cover all bases.
I have a feeling that the RMT tool has similar approach, just of course with more science into it.

Even from a semi-scientific method one would expect ways of measuring the different factors, or "elements" as you say. By what measures is Soldado 6 out of 7 class, for example? As long as you propose none, this is worth very little more than your subjective opinion on who is the best player to buy.

And? Rooney played feckall in pre season and loves running the show in Rvp's absence. Moyes coming off a 1-4 humiliating defeat has all to play for and won't rest any fit player imo.

RVP's not definitely out is he? And if he's fit he'll start rather than be benched so it's not a risk starting him in your team really. I'd take a -4 to get Walcott out though, don't think there's any need for wildcarding.

Chester can wait, RVP may be fit and you will want Theo back in 2 weeks.

-4 with Turner playing is a good option. I wouldn't sell either Wally or RVP for a hit unless it was part of your plan to sell them anyway.

RVP > Rooney this week for a hit would make sense if RVP is out and you like that move long-term.

    Captain dilemma.
    Lukaku or Suarez.
Both are up against poor defence.
Suarez is a risk since it's his first premier league return although he looked very threatening against Man United in the cup loss.
Lukaku picked up a goal last week and seems a bit more reliable.

    Is Barkley worth 5.2?

I'm downgrading Theo to invest funds elsewhere and my options are
a)Barkley (but am I too late..)
    2)Whittingham
    3)Brady
    4)Arnautovic

If I was choosing Barkley or Brady it would have been better if I had made my choice up earlier this week to get the rises but anyways, who would you go?

On current returns he looks well worth it. Forget that you could have got him for 4.5 at the beginning and judge him against alll other available mids, only Ravel Morisson comes close for value imo.
The cheap mid spot is usually a difficult one to fill but Barklay looks the best contender this season

    Michu Mirallas B.Arfa Brady (Wally)
    Rooney Giroud Soldado

If you're happy, keep. But all he has this season is stats in his favour. He never actually delivered on the promise. I think after an operation he will take a game or two just to get settled again, then will have to find his form, which could take another five games.

      I'm tempted to.

Last year I got rid of bale when he had his injuries and never got him back for his first game back and missed out on double figure scores.

Problem is did the same with Walcott a few time also and although Walcotta injuries were always less serious he never played. The concern is Walcott is more fragile/Wegner is more cautious.

There's no outstanding options for the next 2 matches also.

Last season I would have said yes but this season it allows you to invest in the expensive defernders who are racking up points and still allows you to have a big front 5.

And Barkley and Brady are currently in the top 7 for mids, this isnt likely to continue but so far it would have been an inspired team selection....

The problem I see in your team is in defense, Ivanovic, Walker, Zab and Vidic are likely to top the rankings with Baines at season end, not Dawson and Nastacic so wrong defenders chosen imo

I was actually thinking on the same lines yesterday. With Baines on I wouldn't mind having only 2 big hitters in midfield (prefer Michu/Özil) and 3 cheapies. Might go for Ramsey or Moses instead of Barkley though (Baines enough Eve cover)

Baines + 2 defs from solid teams in the range of 5.0 - 5.5 (Tot, ManU, ManC, Arse) and rotating 2 cheapies

      3 big hitters up front.

So would go for 4-3-3 most of the time.

This strategy might put to much pressure on Baines but with the Wally injury and most of big hitters on midfield not producing I might go for it.

If failing you can always dowgrade Baines and upgrade midfield.

    Early Bird Update

For those who have had a good start this season, this league is for you.

To qualify all you need is to have scored:

    67 in GW1
49 in GW2 with no hits or 54 with a hit. More hits equals higher score needed.
48 with no transfers in GW3 or 54 with a hit.
52 with no transfers in GW4 or 58 with a hit.
52 with no transfers in GW5 or 59 with a hit.

Code is 58-338 for those who pass these 5 points.
14 qualified. 156 knocked out this week.

Am I right in thinking that due to the massive exodus in GW1 from Lukaku and his subsequent major price drop, is it save to assume that barring injury or a horrible run of form that his stock must surely be on the rise. Even if he is not spectacular, but just consistent. Of course, if he explodes he'll surely skyrocket.
