Robin Van Persie sits out Holland training with a toe problem. Luke Shaw and Ashley Williams withdraw from international duty, Brendan Rodgers talks up Jose Enrique’s recent displays, while Samuel Eto’o admits he’s yet to adjust to the Premier League.

Van Persie Toe Concern for Dutch

Reports yesterday indicate that Robin Van Persie missed Holland’s latest training session due to an injury to his little toe.

The Scout Says: The omission is likely to be no more than precautionary and could well be linked to the problem that had been reported prior to United’s trip to Sunderland. Certainly, if the issue was serious there’s every chance that Van Persie would have withdrawn from the squad or failed to feature against the Black Cats – given that Holland have already qualified for next year’s tournament in Brazil, there’s no need for the Dutch to take any unnecessary risks with their star striker ahead of Friday’s home clash with Hungary. Nevertheless, Fantasy managers will be hoping for a more positive prognosis ahead of a run of three home games in four for United, with the hope that Van Persie can rediscover his scoring form whilst on international duty after a poor domestic run has seen him manage just a single converted spot-kick in the past six Gameweeks.

Eto’o Needs Time to Adjust

Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o has admitted he has yet to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League since moving from Russian outfit Anzhi in the summer transfer window. Speaking to the club’s official magazine, the Cameroon international conceded:

“Already I have noticed that English football is very physical – more physical than other types of football. It hasn’t been too much time yet, so I need to continue working to make sure I keep improving my level. Every game here is important and I realise that – I have come here to enjoy playing for Chelsea and to enjoy the football. I go into every game with the same approach. It doesn’t matter where you put me, I will play football. My team-mates are helping me a lot and also the coaches, so I feel that I am settling into the team.”

The Scout Says: Yet to score for the Blues, Eto’o’s lack of impact has been somewhat surprising. Handed back-to-back starts in Gameweeks 4 and 5, he managed just an assist and has been afforded just 18 minutes since, with Jose Mourinho preferring Demba Ba’s more physical presence for Sunday’s trip to Cardiff. With Fernando Torres still sidelined due to a knee injury, Eto’o could make a return to the XI for the upcoming home clash with Cardiff – a good performance against the Bluebirds and he could be handed the chance to continue as Mourinho’s side prepare for games against Newcastle and West Brom in the next four. The Chelsea manager’s rotation policy suggests he would admittedly be no more than a punt, however, with Oscar still the only attacking option to justify our interest so far, having struck three of Chelsea’s nine goals in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Shaw Skips England Under 21 Duties

Southampton’s left-back has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad to face San Marino on Thursday. Shaw has failed to recover from the illness that forced him out of Sunday’s win over Swansea but is hopeful of recovering in time to face Lithuania next Tuesday.
The Scout Says: Shaw’s weekend absence was the latest in a series of issues that have affected his game time this term. The Saints left-back has managed just three lots of 90 minutes in the opening seven Gameweeks, with his propensity for picking up problems proving a real source of frustration for Fantasy managers. With just two goals conceded thus far, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been the most resilient defence on offer but while Artur Boruc leads the keeper rankings and Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren sit on 46 points apiece, Shaw has registered just 32 points by comparison. Indeed, with both centre-back now priced at 5.2, many may turn to Nathaniel Clyne instead – coming in at 4.4 to Shaw’s 4.7, he has now started each of the last four after winning back his starting berth and looks nailed-on at right-back.

Williams out of Wales Qualifiers

Swansea’s Ashley Williams is also amongst the international withdrawals after being forced to skip Wales’ upcoming games against Macedonia and Belgium. The centre-half had previously stated his intentions to appear but has since been ruled out after being examined by medical staff:

The Scout Says: The news will appease Swans boss Michael Laudrup, who has been without his skipper for the past two Gameweeks due to an ankle injury. Laudrup had called upon Chris Coleman to overlook Williams when naming the squad and has insisted for a number of weeks the player requires rest in order to recuperate – with another 10 days until their next league game against Sunderland, Laudrup will be a little more optimistic of welcoming Williams back to the fold as the Welsh club prepare for a very kind run of fixtures. With doubts still hovering over Williams (who is now down to 4.9 in FPL) and Ben Davies also out of international duties as a result of a hamstring problem, those eyeing up the Swansea defence for the next five Gameweeks (SUN, WHM car, STO, ful) could turn to Chico as a safer option if neither of the former two make it in time for the Black Cats encounter.

Lambert Hails Villa Versatility

Villa boss Paul Lambert reckons his players’ versatility has been vital over the past few matches. Lambert has trialled a number of formations in order to cope with injuries to key players including Christian Benteke, Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Westwood, with a 3-5-2 rolled out in the Gameweek 6 win over City:

“The beauty of it is they can adapt. The lads know it (3-5-2). They played it last year, so they know how to do it. The good thing is we can change to different ways of playing. They can adapt to whatever we ask them to do. It all depends on who we’re playing against and what players are fit, but we try to get a team to win. I played three at the back against Manchester City. Even though it was the first time this season, I thought they did exceptionally well.”

The Scout Says: Lambert had shifted from his default 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent games in order to cope with a growing injury list but with Agbonlahor and Westwood available for last week’s trip to Hull, it was perhaps telling that he reverted to 4-3-3 once again. The likes of Leandro Bacuna and Antonio Luna had been utilised as wing-backs in the win over Manuel Pellegrini’s side but the duo were moved back into defence for the Tigers trip, as Lambert relied on Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann to supply the width further up the pitch. In spite of the success against City, then, it seems likely that Lambert will only return to such a system if injuries force his hand again – thus instantly quashing Luna’s out of position prospects on the left of midfield.

Enrique Praised By Rodgers

Just a day after Aly Cissokho capped his comeback from injury with a 90-minute run out for Liverpool’s Under 21s, Brendan Rodgers has been talking up Jose Enrique’s recent displays. The Reds boss also went on to reveal the Spaniard has been nursing a slight injury over the last few matches:

“Jose has been playing with a little bit of an injury, but he’s still been showing his determination and pride for the team. He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. He’s a threat when he goes forward and defensively he’s very difficult to beat. The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He’s one who is looking to improve his game and his passing. There’s no doubt that on his day he’s one of the best in that position in this country.”

The Scout Says: With little alternative on the left of defence, Enrique has played more than 100 minutes more than any of his defensive team-mates in spite of his minor injury. Indeed, Liverpool’s only defeat arrived in Gameweek 5 when Rodgers omitted Enrique from the XI and opted for Mamadou Sakho on the left of a back-four in the 1-0 home defeat by Southampton. The result prompted a change in formation to 3-4-1-2 and saw Enrique re-installed to the starting line-up on the left of midfield and, whilst Cissokho now offers an option should Rodgers choose to rest the Spaniard, Rodgers’ praise will offer reassurance to Enrique’s owners ahead of the resumption of the domestic programme in 10 days’ time.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

this is a regular hot topic, but with fixtures changing and players coming back from injury its worth asking again.

Which are the top three strikers to own over the next four weeks or so.

BTW - Among those with the most favourable fixtures over the next four weeks are SWA, EVE, CHE and TOT.

Interestingly I worked on the FPL surgery yesterday and that meant going through a lot of submitted teams - of about 60 teams I looked at, I would say that 90% had three of Giroud, Sturridge/Suarez, Lukaku. I was surprised and rather disappointed. I really struggled to find teams that had players outside the "template" that I could feature in the article.

One of SaS is still imperative I believe.

Rooney and RvP is to much budget spent on an out-of-form team.

Benteke could be another one but the fixtures aren´t so easy...

Chelsea doesn´t have a nailed striker, real shame...

Bony isn´t nailed on as well...

      So I would say

      Giroud - Sturridge - Lukaku

Suarez, Lukaku and Benteke for me.

      Suarez is a class player
      Lukaku has that explosiveness
Benteke(if fit) is the focal point of villa attack and a good finisher so you can trust him to get the goals

I'm not sure how anyone can ignore Lukaku right now. Form + Fixtures

I don't really see anyone else with that pairing; the guys in good form (Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud) have mixed fixtures and the guys with good fixtures (Soldado, Bony, Eto'o, Ba) have no form at all.

Benteke has good fixtures round the corner but you can't really say he's in form after a month out.

Remy, as HBA always falls away and Newcastle find themselves reliant on a streaky, in form no. 9 who's a goldmine.

Priority is Suarez/Sturridge I think. Red hot at the minute. Lukaku is just so cheap. An absolute bargain and will bang them in as good as any other. Need to get him at the right price now I think. RVP surely if united get motoring but too expensive for me. I have Rooney but looking to get Tekkers after the next 2 if united underperform

It's SAS + Lukaku for me at present (used WC in GW7), and looking to change either Suarez or Sturridge to Benteke in a couple of weeks, when it may be more clear with one of SAS becomes the more essential. Ride the good fixtures/form in the mean time.

I dumped Giroud (and Rooney) as part of my WC and kept Sturridge, as I feel Arsenal goals are more likely to be shared amongst the Arsenal midfield, whereas SAS will be involved in most of the Pool goals and assist.

      Well, there are five, unfortunately.

Remy, Sturridge, Lambert, Rooney - and Lukaku.

I would not like to go into the next game without three of those.

Although it depends on price, I have Sturridge, Rooney, Lukaku but for the next four weeks i believe Benteke, RVP, Suarez would be the best and 90mins guaranteed strikers with the addition of Lukaku or Remy if funds are not available or Aguero with the rotation risk always in mind

If I could pick three strikers for the next three GWs I'd go Suarez, Sturridge and RVP. I'm more than happy with my Sturr + Lukaku + Giroud combo though.

Suarez / Sturridge, Lukaku / Benteke, Aguero / Negredo, Rooney / RVP, Giroud / Saldado

It's almost impossible to know which ones to buy, but City at home usually equals goals and they are starting to look good ( in the league at least ).

I think I will have Sturridge, Lukaku and Benteke leading my line. One player in my mini league has moved from rock bottom to mid table largely due to his Remy, Sturridge and Lukaku strike force he has owned for the last 3 weeks.

José Fonte, when approached to talk about the possibility of being called for Portuguese national team, said that Pochetino was a very important arrival for the club and that he is mainly worried to have a solid defence in order to get a top 10 finish. He also speaks of the importance of Lovren arrival since he is an experienced defender and this makes his job easier.

Despite his good start of the season, he hasn´t been called to play for Portugal yet, even though Bruno Alves is out injured... I hope Portugal Manager reads his interview and realises he deserves to be called for his form atm. I´m really hoping to see Fonte in the 2014 WC.

Don´t you worry baby, José Fonte whoooowoooow!

FFS UEFA Beach Soccer Tournament Chat

Here's a fresh hot topic for today for this tournament. If you can direct all chat about the tournament here from now on that'll be great.

The previous hot topic is still open but is starting to get very long so this may be a better option to discuss the latest comings and goings.

Now we have lost all the chat/discussion from the last Hot Topic.

Since it makes no difference what thread a hot topic is in, what if you just made the hot topic post on the end of an old article? Then the next day made the hot topic a new post on the end of the previous days discussion on that article. Effectively that would keep the fresh articles clear and allow continuity.

Hopefully, this year people will realize that the idea you have to be 'elite' to participate is fiction. A search of the Solomons roster wont turn up any body who qualifies as 'elite' and several teams are making slots available to unknowns. However in any competitive game it helps to be good.

Yes that is correct, I think Season 1 had the number of episodes reduced because of the writer's strike in America at the time.

Getting to watch Breaking Bad for the first time again would be the biggest advantage of amnesia.
That and reading Game of Thrones again.
I imagine the disadvantages may outweigh this though.

So money no object which Defender to get to sit alongside this lot:
    Boruc
    Baines, Mertesacker, BTurner, Chester, Ward

    Will get rid of Ward...

I'm thinking Terry or Enrique but considering also either Walker/Dawson/Vertonghen or a Swansea pick.

Enrique I've been burnt in the past, get him in after a good couple of weeks and then get's a load of 1 or 2 pointers for weeks on end so I sell and he get's lot sof points again.....

    Popular players I've never/rarely owned.

    Benteke (never)
    Lukaku (never)
Suarez (only for a few games at the end of 10/11)
Michu (GW35-38 last season and GW6-7 this season)
    Fellaini (GW33-36 last season)

I don't do myself any favours do I?

I'm scared of owning streaky strikers from mid-table teams as I worry that they will go off form and I will end up always chasing last week's 'hot' pick.

Are Benteke and Lukaku more than streaky picks?

I think both are. I prefer Lukaku though. Last season he managed a shot on target (not just a shot) every 47 minutes. Benteke manage a shot on target every 74 mins. I know it can be hard to compare and Lukaku is playing for a different team, but thats a hefty difference.

I think if Lukaku can get closer to 3000 mins this season he'll be right up there at the end of the season (along with Sturridge too i reckon).

This is my worry too - Benteke's security of minutes is definitely appealing. I just think that Lukaku is clearly a cut above both Kone and Jelavic and i think Martinez will be hard pushed to ignore that (i hope)

I have the same front line and am considering Rooney to Lukaku, still not completely decided though. I got Giroud when he was 8.5m and I'm not shipping him out with Nor, cpl up next.
Personally I would be thinking of shipping Eriksen but that's purely on the basis that he has previously not scored very many points, I haven't watched any Tottenham games.

Sounds good. Over the next 3 GW's,
        Giroud -> Benteke
Barfa -> Wally. That means I'm pretty much covered from the Arsenal attack with both Ozil and Wally.

Don´t think it´s wise to drop Rooney atm, just wait 2 more GWs, if your not satisfied, Benteke could be your alternative. Also would monitor on Giroud, in 2 GWs may be time to ditch him for another striker providing the likes of Walcott are on form.

Benteke has a tough fixture and it might be hard to tell where he is physically until you see him in action. With that strikeforce I'd wait one GW, then do Rooney or Giroud to Lukaku or Benteke, whichever looks best.

following on from Jonty's hot topic above:

suarez, sturridge, lukaku, and benteke seem to be the popular options now (and maybe giroud too)

what are your thoughts on Rooney? is it worth keeping him if you already have him or would it be better to ship him for one of those other options?

Well I needed to ditch HBA with my FT and, even though I think Lukaku will do well, I don't think he's worth a 4 point hit to get him in in place of Rooney or Giroud.

On that basis, I'm keeping Rooney with 2 home fixtures and hoping that our form can only get better considering how awful we've been all season.

Conclusion: Not absurd to get rid of him but with 2 home fixtures in a row, it's very hard to do so.

Prior to Sunderland he had scored three goals on the bounce, with everyone looking to transfer him in... If you have him I think it would be dangerous to transfer him out with the two upcoming fixtures he has

At least give it a couple of weeks, by which time we'll be able to assess Benteke

If you'd have watched the last two united games you would've seen how frustrating Rooney was! Every time there would be a cross into the box or a pass in Rooney would be nowhere to be seen. He was literally playing everywhere but as a striker! :'(

I dont think there will bags of goals in the next 2 games, Rooney has a high chance of scoring, but in my opinion he's not going to have an extremely high scoring 2 GWs. He will also share the goals with RVP, who I'm sure is raring to score a goal following his recent absence/drought. Which is why I transferred him out, mainly because of the first reason, and also because I just wanted the extra cash 😆
I do plan on bringing him back in soon though, potentially after the Stoke game.

Chester, Rio, Jedinak, HBA, Brady - what's the priority transfer here?

I need Rio or HBA to play to field 11 players...

    A) Chester > Wilson/Clyne (FT)
    B) HBA + Rio > Barkley/Oscar + Baines/Wilson (-4 points)

I'm being drawn to the boring A option, as HBA + Rio COULD both play and COULD score well... However a Barkley + Baines combo could work out well over the coming weeks without any other EVE cover... thoughts?

I know Giroud has scored well this season so far and is the focal point of a very creative midfield but i seriously doubt i will own him at all this season. Firstly i don't really rate him as a player and secondly (and more importantly) with so few mid-premium midfield options doing well this year except from Arsenal (Ramsey,Ozil,Walcott & Cazorla when back i'm sure. I just don't want the overkill of Arsenal players, especially when their form inevitably dips.

Lukaku and Benteke are obvious replacements. Benteke has shown a level of consistency this calender year which is truly amazing, Lukaku is playing for a better team and is cheaper. For me, Benteke at full fitness edges it since he's on pens as well being 100% nailed. Villa have also improved as a whole. Whether he's fully fit or not, we'll see during the break.

To summarize, if you want to hit it early, Lukaku's your man. If you want to wait (would probably recommend this approach), you can see how Lukaku and Benteke fares over the international games.

Seems to be a bit of debate on who is the better option, Benteke or Lukaku. For me, it is Lukaku mainly becasue he plays for a better team who create more chances. Yes, Benteke has that goalscoring record in 2013, but Lukaku only scored 2 less goals last season. Factor in the price difference and Lukaku is the way to go.

Some will go for both but i can't see me wanting to have an Everton and VIlla striker in my team. Aguero is one to get soon.

I own Rooney and i wanna keep him for the next 2 Home games. Lukaku will prob be 8.5 by the time i get around to swapping Rooney out, while benteke will be 8.8/8.7. Considerin the similar price i'd go benteke everytime! Lukaku @ 7.4 was unbelievable value for whoever got on however

Got Lukaku at 7.4 the day he scored off the bench. I have Sturridge, plan to swap RVP>Rooney next week, and stick at that.

I would try to have both.

The appeal of Benteke really is the high percentage of involvement in villa's goals. They are a young attacking team and have no problem scoring. Benteke is usually in the thick of all attacks and is on pens too. Also his game play really works in the favor of bps. He wins headers, keeps things simple, when he dribbles he is hard to be tackled, and he seems to have learned how to be on side (I rmbr him being offsides a ridiculously number of times in his first few games last season).

Sorry for the long explanation but that, in my opinion, is why Benteke is a great fpl pick.
