Having opened the season with a double in the Community Shield win over Wigan, Robin Van Persie’s brace in the Gameweek 1 win at Swansea suggested we were in for yet another year of consistent goalscoring. What has followed, however, has been highly unexpected and as United struggle to settle under David Moyes, the Dutchman has a single converted spot-kick to his name in the last six Gameweeks.

A hat-trick for Holland against Hungary last week saw Van Persie become his nation’s all-time top goalscorer and suggested his eye for goal was as keen as ever – with this in mind, we delve into the data to assess just what sort of impact Moyes’ arrival has made on the Fantasy heavyweight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Sorry in advance...

Just before the kick off at Wembley, a thick, dense smoke descended over the pitch. Some officials blamed the Polish flares being set off, before releasing that it was just Jack Wilshere enjoying a pre-match cigarette.

The whole Irish football system needs to be sorted out from top to bottom.

The FAI has turned into a commercial business more than anything recently, they got a big name manager in to please the fans, paid him ridiculous amounts of money and we barely got through to the Euros; having beaten Estonia in a qualifier.

More investment is needed in underage football to improve the standard throughout the country. This isn't a quick fix, it's gonna need time and if the FAI come to their senses and do this, then we need to be patient.

Otherwise, the future's pretty bleak for Irish football at the minute.

Exactly so when you do, it's a big achievement. You were putting down the qualifying for Euro 2012 like you were expecting Ireland to breeze through without any problems. Truth is, Ireland do bloody well to qualify, and that's an achievement in itself.

I would never, ever expect Ireland to breeze through qualifying groups (well, not for a long long time anyway). It's just that the manner that we have gone about recent qualification campaigns that annoys me the most.

Fair enough, I do think you have some decent starting XI players in your current side though. Coleman, McGeady and McCarthy namely. With a bit of luck, you have a good chance of making it into Euro 2016 where there will be more places up for grabs.

In fairness Jedmond some of our past teams throughout the 80s and 90s/early 00s were much better than "just doing well to qualify". Not that I don't agree with your point but we have had the capability of producing decent players (albeit some of them were English born).

We need to do what Belgium did, in the early 2000s. Root and branch changes, start from the bottom.
We will always lose prospective good players to the GAA and the Rugby so we need to make our limited resources count through grass roots coaching and encouraging the kids to play the game in the right way.
I hadn't missed a competitive home match since 1985 until Trapp became coach and then I stopped going because the football being played was so dour and ugly, I suspect there's many more like me

Exactly, I'm sorry but Jedmond's comment doesn't cut it for me. Just becasue we're a small country doesn't mean we should be content just to scrape a qualification and leave it at that.

We have a few issues. The underage stuff is a joke. My brother, for example, is now a Dublin development squad goalie however at his club he was placed on the 3rd team and was never checked by the other 2 teams' managers to see if he was good enough to play up. He has since moved to a different club and is playing 3 divisions higher than the 1st team of his old club. Stuff like that is a joke.

GAA and Rugby are far better organised in this country and as such will draw a lot more people. I've seen a lot of really good players leave my team for GAA and Rugby purely because football is such a joke over here. Here's another example. One of Bohemians development squads decided to play in my brother's league, which is North Dublin Schoolboy instead of the much more competitive Dublin District Schoolboy. That's one of our actual soccer clubs putting their youth side into a division that is 3-4 divisions below their standard just so they can win easy matches.

I could go on about countless examples like that here in Limerick (where the funding and organisation is even worse).

But nothing is going to happen unless the FAI are stood up to. They have been getting away with murder for years now, yet it's only coming to light recently. It's not just a coincidence that, as you said, the standard of the GAA and rugby is much higher.

I agree but football, in general, is a selfish sport in many ways. Any of our real talent leave for other countries (rightfully so!) however usually never return to their old club to coach or do much work with them at all. Look at GAA and rugby, players stick around to coach younger groups all the time. I'm purely football now but a few years ago I was fairly decent with the GAA side of things, hurling especially. I STILL give sessions to my old club even though I haven't played for them in about 4 years.

The funding isn't there either of course. Look at the crowds you get for rugby or GAA matches at the highest level, huge money to be made. A League of Ireland match would be lucky to draw 10% as much. Not to say I don't think the FAI have done it right, extremely wasteful all across the board.

Finally it is our own fault too. How often would you go out say to a League of Ireland match if you could? Would you? I rarely do because I think the football is pretty lousy and I don't want to spend money going to see that standard. A lack of support on my behalf certainly but it goes for nearly every person in this country. Huge numbers of
football enthusiasts will go their entire lives in Ireland without once paying to see a League of Ireland game.

Tbf, I've gone to most of Limerick's home game this season but I had only been to a few before then. (bandwagon)

But yes, the League of Ireland standard is poo, hence the low crowds. This is why we need an improvements from an underage level right up to the international team. It's gonna take a while before things get better imo.

That sums it all up perfectly Som. I' was involved as a player for many years and things I saw frustrated me greatly too.
I'm helping coach my local u-11s and 12s ATM and there's great satisfaction when even ONE of them lifts his head up to see if there's a pass on!

Exactly that Roy. Have a bunch of "younger lads" in the teams now (that said I'm only 21 ) and not one of them can pick a pass. They can dribble, they can run fast, they can't release the ball.

I can imagine from a coaching perspective it's really quite frustrating but we need more people like yourself in there working at it, people with actual experience not just people who were good at FIFA.
