We roll out the second instalment of our new weekly article for Members this evening, offering an in-depth statistical analysis of the main captaincy contenders for the Gameweek ahead. With Liverpool, City and Arsenal squaring up to some resilient defences, we delve into the data in order to assess our armband possibilities.
2 bowlers & 2 batsmen left to pick. Guess the toss decides for me.
Open ControlsGot him but in Brisbane I'd pick a bowler.
Open ControlsI see. Haven't been keeping up. Will probably pick a bowler from the team bowling 1st as the 1st session normally has a lot of life.

This ones not like cricinfo, you can really just have the best players cos theres no price structure,so tbh ive gone for my cricinfo team so carberry and rogers and bell get a game ,ignoring trott, pietersen, warner and Watson so probably wont win your league, but still taking parts the fun bit ....

How much would Ronaldo be in fpl prices? If Rvp is 14 I'd say £16m!
Open ControlsYea probably.
If think he would actually ruin the game..everyone would just have Ronaldo and captain him every week.Open ControlsI'd put it more, maybe 19m. And see who goes for it. I think with ronaldo you've actually got to really price him out of the game almost, to make it a fair challenge, because as a captain choice he will get you around 20+ points virtually every match (based on Real Madrid scoring record). At 16m I think everyone would still buy him, you've got to make it a situation where NOT owning can also be a way of winning.

Chances of England winning at the Gabba? Only ever won there twice and in one of those we cheated.
Open ControlsBookies say 30%. A draw is a win as the later Tests suit Swann.
Open ControlsDoesn't feel like an ashes series. The build up has been very low key. It's all down to this back to back series. We've only just won it and now we could lose it immediately. It's like we won and Australia immediately said, double or quits.
Open ControlsThat's the cricket schedule these days. Will be a while until the next Ashes I guess.

Open ControlsNot having Suarez has hammered me this season and I'm still 2/3 transfers away from working him in. The stats make me contemplate serious hits to get the guy but I'm holding firm for now. Hoping that Sturridge does something this weekend and Suarez's price holds. Hah, fat chance...

City score for fun with/without Aguero, especially at home, but Suarez is the main man at Liverpool. Am hoping for a grounded flight.Open ControlsWho to captain - Suarez or Ozil??
Suarez - beast, fixture proof, always on goals and assists, but Ozil can be brilliant at home (and exactly with team like Southampton) and if I captain him, this decision can make a difference between me and 90%, which will captain Suarez or Aguero. So?Open ControlsI think Liverpool will lose, 2-1, with Gerrard scoring.
Open ControlsHe looked knackered against Utd but should be nice and fresh for the weekend. Time for the Southampton defence to get a reality check?
I sold Giroud for Aguero last week but fancy him to come back flying this weekend!Open Controls
What position has Bacuna been playing recently?
Open ControlsReverse OOP then... Hmmm, was thinking of getting him as my 5th mid seeing as I'm 0.1 short of Ravel but now I'm not so sure 🙁

- Early Game Review
In recent years it has been seen as an unwise move to captain a player in the first game of the weekend, the best players seem to falter and it is a crapshoot most owners want to stay away from. But i’m here to see if this year the best player in the first fixture or the player that would most likely be captained from the first fixture has really under performed.
GW1: Most people took advantage of the double game week by captaining either Eden Hazard or a different Chelsea midfielder and some chose the week’s leading scorer Christian Benteke to wear the arm band. The first fixture was between Liverpool and Stoke and the two most likely captain candidates from this game were Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho. Sturridge showed us a glimpse of things to come by finishing with 6 points and the game’s lone goal. Coutinho also showed us a glimpse of the future by frustratingly being involved in all Liverpool attacks without any points to show for his efforts.
GW2: The first game in week two was between Arsenal and Fulham, Theo Walcott (despite drawing a blank) and Olivier Giroud (who had scored the week before) were selected by many. Although both provided some return for our faith with a Giroud goal and a Walcott assist they were upstaged by Lukas Podolski’s brace and left fantasy captainers somewhat frustrated at the lack of points received in a 3-1 rout of Fulham.
GW3: In a week with no glaringly obvious captain choice many went with Sturridge and Giroud who were seeming consistent in their goal scoring pace. A very attractive fixture for Manchester City against Hull had owners wondering which option was the safest. At this time the forwards were being rotated regularly and picking which mid would do well was a daunting task. Yaya Toure who had done pretty well in the two games prior was selected along with any City defender who were almost guaranteed a CS against an inferior team. Both options worked out well enough with Yaya ending with ten points and the most selected defender from City at the time: Pablo Zabaleta, got an assist along with his clean sheet to give him maximum bonus points for the game.
GW4: Another tasty match-up was played this week with the first match being Manchester United vs. Palace and RVP was easily the most captained player among all players. While van Persie did reward those who had placed their faith in him with a single goal, he was outscored by his fellow striker Wayne Rooney who scored a single goal as well but received maximum bonus points bringing him onto our fantasy radars for the first time this year.
GW 5: A matchup between Aston Villa and Norwich had Benteke owners eager to captain him and reap the rewards. But a freak injury left captainers horrified to see their captain taken off. And to add insult to injury the man who replaced Benteke: Libor Kozak, scored the game’s only goal and received two bonus points.
GW 6: Not many chose captains from the early game between Tottenham and Chelsea especially with United and City having relatively easy fixtures. But the two best players at the time in this fixture: Roberto Soldado and Oscar did not perform as well some may have wished, with Soldado providing returns only with an assist to a popular pick at the time Gylfi Sigurdsson.
GW 7: This week we had a relatively welcoming fixture in Everton vs. Manchester City although maybe not as nice Liverpool vs. Palace, with Romelu Lukaku coming off of a brace against Newcastle the game week prior. Lukaku performed well scoring a goal. For those who risked a Manchester City captain were rewarded with most of the big names on the team sheet providing some sort of return with Alvaro Negredo leading the charge by scoring a goal and getting maximum bonus points.
GW 8: We were given a nice set of fixtures with the early fixture being Newcastle vs. Liverpool coupled with Arsenal vs Norwich. A popular captain pick this week was Luis Suarez. Suarez provided a return on the faith placed in him by many by assisting both of Liverpool’s goals and receiving two bonus points. For those who had still thought Suarez could be ignored if they had Sturridge were pleased to see a goal for the Englishman.
GW 9: Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace seemed like a great game to captain someone, while most considered a West Brom fixture for Liverpool a tough game and that Suarez and the team would struggle. The two most selected captains were Giroud and Mesut Ozil who was fresh off a two goal game in a 4-1 win over Norwich. Giroud provided some compensation with a goal but Ozil did not receive any attacking points.
GW 10: Although far and away the most popular candidate for captaincy this week was Sergio Aguero who was facing a weak Norwich side, who as you all know did not disappoint. For those without Aguero this week, a Chelsea captain looked like a decent option vs. Newcastle, especially with Fernando Torres’ “reemergence” the week before against City. Unfortunately Chelsea failed to score and lost a disappointing 2-0 game to Newcastle and disappointed those who had put their faith in Chelsea this week.
GW 11: Although a Luis Suarez fixture looked very appealing vs. Fulham and granted, he did return those who placed their trust in him in a big way with two goals and and an assist, but for some a Christian Benteke punt looked in the cards especially against a promoted side in Cardiff for those who wanted to captain a differential and maybe make up some ground. However, Benteke had other plans and disappointed those who had put faith in the Beligian and failed to score any points while not being involved in each of the Villa goals.
To conclude, yes there have been some struggles with some early game captains but its about even between the negative and positive performances with there being slightly more positive performances than negative ones. With this information I am led to believe that we simply can't overlook Suarez this week or another player in the future who may have a decent fixture but does not attract as much captaincy attention due to him playing in the early fixture. Especially with Suarez's form he can not be over look just because of an early fixture, this week he is as good of an option as Rooney is and even more so in the future.Open ControlsThis is what I'd like to say: http://img.pandawhale.com/47677-DIDNT-READ-darth-vader-gif-ZxNI.gif
But I actually did read it and it was a good read. Thanks! +1Open ControlsYour conclusion is logical but I think most avoid because of the emotional component -- it's just so much less enjoyable to have a captain fail 2 hours into the gameweek.
That, and there are really three games: BPL, FPL, and FFS -- FFS is unbearable with an early kickoff failure, and who wants to lose that?Open ControlsYeah I agree but if you look at it the other way, its a rather nice feeling to gloat for two hours about your brilliant early captain success
Open Controls
Who are your top 3 potential (C) choices this week?
Open ControlsI have been switching between Suarez and Rooney for my team all week but right now I have it on Suarez I just hope he doesn't get injured tonight.
My top three would be...
1. Suarez
2. RVP
3. Rooney
Aguero for me is fourth this week but definitely higher if he had an easier fixtureOpen ControlsRVP is just not as good for your value as Rooney is, RVP will score more this year, but I doubt the difference between Rooney and RVP will be as big as the one between Suarez and Sturridge by the season's end. RVP will definitely score at least on this week though but its a very safe bet that Rooney will pick up attacking points as well
Open ControlsTx. NTFM :):
You put a lot of thought into this and I gladly give you an upvote. gl.Open Controls
Sometimes a 6pt return is still a bad result for a captain. How many scored 8+ ?
Open ControlsWe had a similar hot topic a few weeks back. That post included avg number of goals in the early games compared to the others. The conclusion was no big difference but I personally thought the fraction of a goal less from the early games was statistically significant, accepting the small sample size.
My memory tells me the late game is often a goal fest. But that may be a couple of memorable matches affecting my thought. I'd like to see stats over multiple seasons. Could it be true that its hard to be creative at the early kick off, and easier for an evening game?Open Controls

Thanks for the replies -- looks a wasteland FPLwise.
Open ControlsYou're right mate.
I'm a United fan and I have no faith in anybody but Rvp at the moment.
Looking to bring him in as I've got no United cover, he's our only player I'd transfer in until Moyes stops messing around with the defence and picks a consistent, reliable back 4.Open Controls

Open ControlsGood article. Go through a similar thought process in picking captains though admittedly not so meticulously and it's paid off all 11 GWs so far. Currently on the same captain suggested.

Anyone care to tell me why I should not go a Arsenal defender over a WBA defender?
Open ControlsWhat the hell, VP not a viable pick for this article?
Open ControlsHow does this look for the weekend?
Boruc
Chico Terry Clyne
Hazard Ozil Ramsey Morrison
Rooney Suarez Aguero(c)
Lewis; Barkley, Wilson, Faye
All good to go? (Proper need to sort out my defensive substitutes)Open ControlsAny reasons why Hulls McGregor would not be a good pick to rotate with Boruc? Thinking of just pulling the trigger on that after he has dropped in price again.
Open ControlsYea saw those. But you can't have it 100% perfect. And I think Sot in GW 20 at home could keep a cleanie depending on their form. GW 13 is bad, but it's worth a FT?
Open Controlsdepends on your team, i have too many other problems to use a transfer, i'll just play boruc every week, or i'm considering boruc->ddg but will probably wait till jan wc
Open ControlsTeam is pretty solid. I've got a few feelers out, so change is coming, but only when it's time. http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1046750/history/
I'd say my defence is the only thing I need to pay more attention to atm, hence the rotating GK.Open Controls
I've not got a bleeding clue who I am going to captain this week.
I'm also getting twitchy fingers and thinking of bringing in Remy for Lukaka, and ramping up my keeper next week (perhaps)...Open ControlsSam problem I'm thinking Walcott in for Silva and give him the captaincy!
Open ControlsI wouldn't give Wally the arm band this week. It is very unlikely that he plays the full ninety minutes

After watching Eve. for many games I think your right to get Remy Only Eve player worth having is Baines because of his obvious attacking Def returns. (Barkley is class also)
