Aaron Ramsey returns home and ensures that his Fantasy bandwagon accelerates once more. Meanwhile, over at Goodison, a Spanish starlet grasps his opportunity, whilst Roberto Martinez’ teamsheet is just one of several to cause Fantasy managers some early concern.

The Game Changer

The script seemed almost too perfect – Aaron Ramsey returning to his hometown club in the form of his life. Having blanked in his last two, those Fantasy managers who had, to this point, resisted his bandwagon had begun to cling to the hope that his output had regressed. While it was written in the stars that Ramsey would light up once again in Cardiff, there was every chance that the home side would battle and deny the Welshman to frustrate Arsenal’s title charge.

Typically, in an incredible season, Ramsey was to stick to the “Roy of the Rovers” script. A brace of goals took his tally to eight for the season, while the inevitable maximum bonus will have him soar away to the top of the Fantasy Premier League midfield rankings.

Ramsey’s rise to heavy-hitter Fantasy status is quite simply remarkable. It’s also compounded by the fact that, to this point, there’s been no real contender to rival his output. The likes of Eden Hazard, Yaya Toure and Oscar remain in his wake, despite their far loftier price tags.

Just when it seemed the Welshman’s form had stalled, his rise in ownership slowed, today’s events have seen his relentless bandwagon pick up speed again. Once more, those who have dared to ignore the Gunners man now face the indignity of swallowing their pride and coughing up a fee almost 2.0 more than his initial value, whilst having to accept that his points will help them make little ground but only aid them in keeping pace with the majority above them.

The Underused

Gerard Deulofeu has been straining at the leash at Goodison, awaiting his chance to add to a string of eye-catching cameos from the bench. Today’s decision by Roberto Martinez to hand the Barcelona loanee his first Premier League start stung those holding Kevin Mirallas, while Deulofeu’s performance will have given them, and the Everton boss, food for thought.

A goal and assist provided the returns, but Deulofeu sparkled throughout as he tormented Stoke and underlined his claims for regular Everton starts. Mirallas now faces a real battle to earn a recall for Wednesday’s trip to Man United, while Martinez will know that it’s going to prove very difficult to play down Deulofeu’s claims from this point on.

For Fantasy managers, the Spaniard’s potential is limited, if not almost killed, by his classification as a forward in the FPL. Even with a modest 5.4 price tag, few will really consider moving for the loanee, given just how precious and profitable our slots up front have become. Instead, Deulofeu’s impact this season could be limited to killing off Mirallas as a Fantasy option. Ironic, given that the Belgian enjoyed only his second double figure return against Liverpool last weekend.

The Selection Poser

With December’s strenuous schedule set to stretch our bench resources to their fullest, today provided a real warning shot across the bows. An array of popular budget and mid-price Fantasy assets found themselves rotated to the bench as the likes of Mirallas, Ross Barkley, Ravel Morrison and Michael Turner were all ousted.

While Mirallas’ rotation with Gerard Deulofeu was always looming, few would have expected it to follow his Merseyside derby display. The Belgian has started every one of Everton’s league outings before today and, while he could well return at Old Trafford in midweek, his security of starts must now be in question.

Barkley’s rotation risk is nothing new – although again, it’s somewhat surprising to see his precocious talent dropped to the bench following a convincing display against Liverpool.

Morrison’s plight also took us by surprise. Having started the previous nine league matches, the former United starlet had seemed settled in Sam Allardyce’s lineup and, with the Hammers struggling for goals, he had seemed the most likely to provide a spark.

An assist off the bench should ensure that Morrison will not be a major concern, but it offers a reminder that few of us can afford to approach the Christmas period without secure starters on the bench. With Michael Turner also looking set to face a battle to regain his Norwich starting role ahead of Seb Bassong and Ryan Bennett, today undoubtedly cast a question mark over a batch of budget talent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

As an American, it's amazing to see how much power individual players have in the EPL. All they have to do is say, "I'm unsettled" or "I want to play for team x" and the ownership caves. What I don't get is why management doesn't take a hard line with a player who has YEARS left on a contract....yes, with 2 yrs. or less than that remaining I can see why they'd want to move a disgruntled player (to avoid losing for free), but in Bale's situation, I was pretty surprised they didn't just say, "Look, Gareth, we have you for four more seasons. You're getting paid well, but hell, maybe we'll even give you a lil' more, just so you keep your head down, stop bitching about Real Madrid, and fire us into the CL."

and he wanted to go so if they kept him they probably would've been selling him later for cheaper or lost him for free when his contract ran up

    Here's my knee jerk.

The 4-man, big hitter midfield is dead. I can't see it recovering from this.

The top 10 performing mids (before BPS) so far will currently set you back, on average, £8.38m and average 62.7pts so far. That's 7.79 points per mil investment.

In contrast, the top 10 performing defs (before BPS) so come in at £6.12m and return 10.07 ppmi.

The contrast only gets bigger if you take the top 10 out of the top 30 - the next 20 down come in at £6.24m/7.01ppm for mids, £5.28m/8.83ppm for defs.

Incidentally, of the top 30 defenders, 17 are CBs and 13 FBs, with tallies of 9.56ppm and 8.74ppm respectively, largely due to BPS distribution (clearances).

Investing in a locked-in front 3, a 5-man defense and rotating through fixtures currently looks like the value decision, with three regular mids, a rotation option and a 2-point banker.

Add to that: ALL BUT FOUR of the top THIRTY defenders are currently returning more points per million investment (current value) than the average return of the top TEN mids.

Only ONE midfielder in the top THIRTY outperforms the average of the top THIRTY defenders.

I'm not sure I've worded that correctly, but it's a stark statistic - whereas in previous years 3-4-3 looked the banker, this year the logic says that 5-2-3 with aaron ramsay and a power forward is the route forward.

I predict that we're looking at the rise of the non-playing midfielder...

The conclusion is whatever you want to take from it.

I've taken that my priority is not, after all, shipping out Jedinak (reliable, but falling in price) or Zanuzaj (due for a fall); but instead to focus my transfers on DEF. I have Vlaar, Terry, Chico, Mert and Coleman in place, so it'll be fixtures that push Chico out.

In prior years that would have been the other way round - right now I'd probably be looking at three 4.5-5.0m and two in the 4.0-4.5 range, with heavy investment in the front seven and a backup mid at 4.5.

I'd also have been looking at the wingbacks as value in previous years... midfielders classed as defenders and so on (remember when coleman first broke through?). This year, everton and vertongen aside, all top 10 defs are CBs.

How so? I'm suggesting that investment focussed on DEFs gets you better returns; so go for five centre-halves at 5.5, three big hitters up front and play around with your MIDs only with the balance. They just don't represent value this year - a certain mercurial welshman aside.

      Reply fail.

      First year playing.

The majority of the GW's I have played 433, occasionally 523 (twice from memory). I am now transitioning to switch to an orthodox 343 as I see value in the 4 with former big hitters coming back from injury as depressed prices.

An interesting stat to see would be the trend in clean sheets this season.

Which bargain defender is most appealing to replace Baker (£3.9)? I have £0.5 in the bank, so a max price of £4.4. I'm considering:

    - Luna (AVL), £4.4. Next five: sou, ful, MUN, stk, CRY. Current position: 10th. Goals conceded: 14.
    - Williamson (NEW), £4.4. Next five: swa, MUN, SOU, cry, STK. Current position: 5th. Goals conceded: 18.
    - Collins (WHM), £4.3; McCartney (WHM), £4.0. Next five: cry, liv, SUN, mun, ARS. Current position: 15th. Goals conceded: 14.
    - Olsson (NOR), £4.2. Next five: liv, wba, SWA, sun, FUL. Current position: 14th. Goals conceded: 23.
    - Gabbidon (CRY) £4.0. Next five: WHM, CAR, che, NEW, avl. Current position: 20th. Goals conceded: 22.

Any others that are strong contenders?? I'm leaning towards Williamson or Luna.

Well that makes Flanagan a strong option for you. If he's nailed down, that's what I would do.

Although looking at Pools next 2 at home that is tempting. What about rotation?

We'll find out more tomorrow, though plenty of people seem to think he'll be solid for the next few games. I'd look out for some more reliable info on that. And doubling up isn't a problem at that price.
