Versus – Lallana, Rodriguez and Lambert

A 3-0 hammering of Fulham last Saturday signalled Southampton’s flourishing form and brought many of their main protagonists onto Fantasy radars. Having grabbed a goal apiece in the Craven Cottage mauling, Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert have been subject to considerable investment over the last few days as Fantasy managers turn to the mid-price trio ahead of a very kind run of fixtures for Mauricio Pochettino’s team:

Over the next six league matches, the Saints go head-to-head with Stoke, Hull, West Ham, Palace and Norwich and, whilst a Gameweek 28 showdown with Liverpool may pose a problem or two, the fact that four other sides have blanks in the same weekend somewhat lessens any possible downside.

Now up to third in the midfield standings in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Lallana has received more than 53,000 transfers in this week, with his current price of 7.8 still looking a real bargain. Rodriguez has been acquired by a similar number after climbing to sixth in the forward rankings on 107 points, whilst Lambert’s 15-point haul against Rene Meulensteen’s side took him to within three points of his fellow frontman.

In the second members article of the week, we delve into the data to see if the numbers can shed any more light on their potential Fantasy returns, as Pochettino’s side look to take advantage of the schedule and boost their bid for a Europa League spot:

The case AGAINST doing Luis SUAREZ (C) this week.

The teams Luis Suarez has scored against this season...
Sunderland (14th in the table) 2
    Crystal Palace (17th)
    West Brom (16th) 3
    Fulham (20th) 2
    Everton (5th) 2
    Norwich (15th) 4
    West Ham (18th) 2
    Tottenham (6th) 2
    Cardiff (19th) 2
    Hull (13th)
    Stoke (11th) 2

    CAREER RECORD AGAINST TOP FOUR
(Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal)

2013-14 – 23 goals, 0 against top four. (Four matches).
2012-13 – 30 goals, 4 against top four. (Eight matches).
2011-12 – 17 goals, 2 against top four. (Eight matches).
2010-11 – 4 goals, 0 against top four. (Three matches).
Total: 74 goals for Liverpool, six against top four from 23 matches.

    PLUS....

Arsenal are undefeated in every league match in which Koscielny and Mertesacker have completed 90 minutes, since a 2-1 home defeat against Manchester United on January 22, 2012. That period has included 28 games, 20 of which have resulted in victories.

    SO...

Don't all be blinded by the Suarez hype.

Live a little and find an alternative captain. The odds suggest you'll be rewarded. 🙂

(Courtesy of the Daily Mail. But facts are facts, right! 😉 )

Who am I captaining? Check the grav. 😀 Logic suggests captaining Suarez every other week, so listen to logic this week!

If I had (or get) a Manchester striker I'll go with them. But at the moment I'm sticking with Suarez and hoping for a high scoring game at anfield. Mata/hazard are tempting but I'm not confident in Chelsea hammering Newcastle and I'm worried RVP/Rooney will hog the points.

You can prove anything and disprove anything with stats, firstly Suarez has only played city, arsenal and Chelsea (he was suspended for the utd game). Plus those 3 games were all away and as we know playing those teams at home is totally different to playing them away particularly arsenal and city. Arsenal have kept 8 of their 11 clean sheets at home and they have only played 2 of the top 6 (excluding themselves) away from home and lost both (utd and city). Liverpool on the other hand have only played 2 of the top 6 (excluding themselves) at home and have won both. Suarez only played in 1 of those games, everton who up to that point had one of the meanest defence, in that game he bagged 11 points.

Ignoring that Suarez doesn't often score against top teams and ignoring that he's looked a little tired of late after playing so many games without rest. If we played the Liverpool vs Arsenal fixture 100 times you'd probably expect:

Liverpool to average about 1.5 - 1.75 goals per game.
Looking back across the last 9 gameweeks Suarez has been involved in 16/23 or around 2/3 of Liverpool's goals, scoring 8 and assisting 8 (I chose 9 because that takes into account 2/4 of the games during Suarez's 4 game ridiculously hot streak so I think it's quite a fair unbiased place to start)
During those 9 games he's averaged 1.25 bonus points each game but against a tougher team that has more chance of beating Liverpool and better players to compete with that's going to be lower so we can take a rough guess that he's going to average 1 bonus point.
So 2/3 of 1.5 goals means he's likely to be involved in on average 1 goal against Arsenal with an equal chance of that being a goal or assist so 3 points for an assist or 4 points for a goal he's likely to get 3.5 points from goals and / or assists plus 1 bonus point = 4.5 points.
I'm sure he'll get 2 points for playing 90 minutes so that'll knock it up to 6.5 PPG but in those games he's also had 3 yellow cards which equals -0.33 points per game. Although to be fair to him that's a high number of yellows so we could knock it down to -0.25 PPG
So far if the above estimations are correct he's probably likely to score about 6.25 PPG
This is without taking into account that he's looked a little tired of late and hasn't been involved in as many of Liverpools goals as he was when he first came back.

          Playing 90 minutes: 2 points
Scoring or assisting 1 goal: 3.5 points
          1 bonus point: 1 point
          Yellow card potential: -0.25 points
Total before slowdown of form is taken into consideration: 6.25 points

For arguments sake we're probably looking at an average score of 6 PPG if this fixture was played over and over.

Just incase that 1.5 Liverpool goals per game was low, if we were to say Liverpool would average 2 goals per game instead of 1.5 that would knock Suarez's points up to 7 PPG average but I think 2 goals on average would be a high expectation. Maybe 1.75 goals would be fairer in which case we could expect a 6.5 PPG average return from Suarez.

Unfortunately due to lack of games to take into account we can't do the same analysis for most of the rival choices but I'd hazard a guess that Mata, Rooney, RVP, Lallana, Toure and Hazard would all be expected to score an average of over 7 PPG in these fixtures and so I'd rather have any of those as captain than Suarez this week.

While I agree, and am capping Hazard this week, if you pick other stats it is much more promising. The Suarez this year is on a completely different level from 2010-2012, and so is Liverpool.

But, the "big" games Suarez has played this season.
      H/A Everton, 2 goals, 2 assists, 3bps
A Chelsea 1 assist, (robbed from another when Etoo fouled him, shouldve been a pen)
A City Blank, again robbed from possible assist with horrible offside decision on Sterling
A Arsenal Blank, hit the post
      A Spurs 2 goals, 3 assists, 3 bps

      6 games. 4 goals, 6 assists, 6 bps. Could/should have had 2 more assists.

      Liverpool are averaging 2,41 goals a game (13/14), compared to 1,86 (12/13), 1,24 (11/12), 1,55 (10/11).
In big games this year, 14 goals in 7 games. (Suarez didnt play v Man Utd (a)).

      Its not a bad option.

But Liverpool have been so strong at home for over a year now, and I certainly think that aside from RvP owners, he is the best choice.

Yea agree , this is a good opportunity for Jan , young went missing V stoke and I felt jan would have got game time only for Jevan to force Moyes to reshuffle , he's well rested now and points / goals are essential.
If Ned is fit he starts IMO but as you say Pelle has been kind to us with info during pressers

Not imo. He was poor in the last game, and is far too inconsistent to get a run in the side. Januzaj has been the better player and i expect him to figure more going forward, though there;'s still Valencia who can also play out wide

I was pondering him as an option to get a Man United guy in this week and I don't want to pop for a big budget guy. He drifted out of the game last week, although I thought he was pretty good in the first half. Just thought maybe Moyes was trying to settle on his midfield.

I have a dilemma; this is currently my defence and I have 0.0 in the bank:

Koscielny, JEvans, Coleman, Cahill, Ryan Bennett.

Should I get rid of JEvans and bring in a defender of 5.0 or cheaper, or get rid of Koscielny and bring in Azpilicueta, and then bench Evans and deal with him next GW? I have had Koscielny since he was 5.4 - who has now risen to 5.7 - so I'll only get 5.5 for him and with nothing in the bank it'll be a stretch to get him back in..

Yeah I don't want to get rid of Koscielny hastily, as he's done me well and Arsenal's defence are reliable and always good for points, and baps. I'm just looking at Azpi's next four fixtures and they look good from a defensive point of view compared to Arsenal's. There's the conundrum. Evans was always going to go, and I doubt he'll be ready this weekend. Against Arsenal I can't see them keeping a clean sheet as United are disastrous at the back.

Which 2 would you keep from Kolarov, Koscielny and Coleman?

Not a sexy question, but still important for me this week - Best mid for under 5.1??

    I have Gnabry, trade for:
    - Barkley
    - Puncheon
    - Ki Sung-Yueng
    - Bacuna
    - Other?

    Thanks

Maybe Brady? Puncheon or Barkley look the best two to me though (although puncheon will stab you in the heart if you bench him 🙁 )

Bacuna is scoring points and Villa have some nice fixtures, including a good one in GW28.

Wow thanks all - more replies than usual.

I like the Noone suggestion, he looked great against Liverpool but the points haven't been there
