Spot the Differential

Seamus ‘Ramos’ Coleman, Ahmed Elmohamady and Aleksandar Kolarov have all proved popular picks this season as a result of playing out of position (OoP), and after touting Stephane Sessegnon in last week’s differentials article, injuries and tactical shuffles have given us a couple more potential “OoP” picks to consider this week. If you’ve already got your fill of double gameweek players, perhaps we can tempt you with a differential or two….

Nedum Onuoha

Despite a strong performance against Wigan two weeks ago, the makeshift strike force of Sessegnon and Malbranque failed to make an impact in their defeat to Fulham last weekend, and Nedum Onuoha was thrown up front for the final 25 minutes as Steve Bruce desperately sought a way back into the game.

At 3-0 down this move was clearly an act of desperation, but the introduction of Onuoha up front made sense from a tactical point of view – Malbranque and Sessegnon are both under 5’8” tall and playing Onuoha gave Sunderland a presence in the final third that they had been missing up to that point. As it turned out, Fulham were rampant by this stage and his introduction made little difference but reports suggest that Onuoha could now play up front from the start against Bolton this weekend, and if this proves to be the case then he could be a very handy differential considering Bolton’s poor run of form. The on loan Man City defender can currently be picked up for 5.1m and is owned by 2.9% of all managers in the FPL game.

Stephen Ward

If Stephen Ward can retain his striker role alongside Steven Fletcher this weekend, he could be another strong “out of position” target considering Wolves’ fixtures. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has returned to training and McCarthy is hopeful that Doyle could still have a part to play this season, so banking on Ward playing up front may be a bit of a gamble. Even without attacking points however, three games against [WBA, sun, BLA] could still provide a decent return for 4.4m.

Ward is currently classed as a defender due to playing the last two seasons at left back, but he was bought by McCarthy as a striker and became a first team regular in that position in the second half of the 06/07 season, scoring four goals in his 11 starts. He looked a threat in last week’s derby game, and although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, it was his run into the box that earned them their early penalty.

Thomas Hitzelsperger

The last time Thomas Hitzelsperger made the differentials, he picked up a goal and an assist in an 11-point haul and with a home game against Blackburn this afternoon, we’re backing him to make a big impact again. Ok, he has managed just a single assist in the six games since then, but considering four of those were against Tottenham, Man United, Chelsea and Man City then that can probably be excused. Fixtures ease up considerably for the remainder of the season with [BLA wig SUN] possibly the easiest run in of any side in the league, so at 4.8m and with just 0.8% ownership then he looks a strong option.

A lot depends on how the team performs as a whole, but if West Ham get something out of the game then you can be pretty sure that Hitzlsperger will be involved somewhere. A look over his OPTA stats in recent weeks confirm just how influential he has become to the Hammers; In the last four games, he has had more attempts on goal (6) and more key passes (11) than the rest of the West Ham midfield put together.

Best of the Rest

Jonathan Spector is another “out of position” target, and should continue his role in the West Ham midfield in Scott Parker’s absence. He plays a more defensive role than Hitzlsperger but at just 4.1m and classed as a defender, he could be worth a look. Mikel Arteta returned to action last weekend, and slotted back into the left wing role that saw him pick up an assist and Bonus Points against Newcastle back in gameweek 29. Everton have won six of their last seven games against City, and Arteta could play a big part here again, despite conceding penalty duties to Leighton Baines. Finally, Shola Ameobi has somehow managed to string together a few games without picking up a serious injury, so at 4.1m he could be a decent option against struggling Birmingham if you’re short of funds for a striker option.

Think my rival did Nani + Sturridge ---> Modic/Lennon + Defoe.
How worried should I be? Need a Blackpool defensive miracle. 🙁

Well I've been saying Spurs are a textbook for letting u down in "easy" home games. West Ham was 0-0, was it not this season when they lost 1-0 to Wigan at home?

I'm captaining VDV purely because everyone is but I sense they could let us down.

However I've got a small sneaky bet on Blackpool 1-0, the way my betting has gone, Spurs will hammer them!

Hitzlsperger is at the heart of a lot of West Ham's attacking play - he sets up almost 3 goalscoring opportunities per game (only Malouda averages better) and almost guarantees 2-3 efforts on goal per game. If West Ham win, he looks their best prospect for returns.

As a free transfer punt I think he looks a good option. Taking a hit for a non-double gameweek player however is a big risk however and Adam could easily produce at Spurs.

I really don't get how folk are baffled by Kolarov's selection. He'll get clean sheets. He averages more shots on goal per game than both Silva and Toure. He's on corners and some free-kicks. He more or less plays as a left winger when Silva cuts inside. Okay - so that hasn't turned into huge Fantasy points as yet, but surely the idea here is to anticipate returns and select ahead of points gained rather than promote a player after he's already delivered?

He'll be on the bench at Everton now.

He just doensn't look 'right' in most games though; an awkwardness that befits a trainspotter, not a Premier League footballer.

Lol...true enough...I'm not backing his credentials as a player as such but, if Mancini keeps picking him and he keeps getting himself in situations to score or assist then he still looks the best option in the City back four.

Joleon 'Eye of the Tabby Cat' Lescott would have been my pick.

City CS potential. Threat at set plays. Falls over at least 5 times a game for comedy value.

And I enyoy watching Kompany give him a tongue lashing every time he's oop.

I don't think you really need to defend the selection as his potential is clear and has been there most of the season. But he simply hasn't delivered and certainly when I have had him this season it has been very frustrating. That isn't to say he won't explode during this gw and fulfil that potential.

I just think that when a player has so many shots and crosses and he hasn't scored points, this doesn't show he has potential so much as he can't cross or shoot. The fact we've been waiting for his potential to bear fruit all season is something of a worry.

City rarely score from corners and if they did it'd be lescott the favorite to get the goal anyway. And lescott is unlikely to be rotated.

I think there are 5 games that city got clean sheets, and kol played less than 60 mins, and there's no sign this will stop with mancini talking about rotation.

corners and crosses would be ok if city had players playing regularly who can score headers. (lescott can, in which case why not just buy lescott?) Also, his crosses are often really, really bad.

from what I've seen his shooting is quite poor.

I think there are 5 games city kept a clean sheet and kol played less than 60 mins. Rotation is even more likely now. Again, I think lescott is less likely to be rotated.

Just seems like we've been waiting a long time for his potential to bear fruit. It's seeming more like he's just bad at what he does, and that's why he's not getting points.

Team linked and considering 2 options to get in VDV
    Option1
    Lampard to VDV
    Walters to Silva

4pt hit; lose out on la pard for next week; best potential midfield coverage for dgw; rotation risk for city players

    Option2
    Kuyt to VDV
    Walters to Yaya
4pt hit; lose Kuyt for next week; more secure midfield for dgw; less dgw coverage.

So I guess the question is Kuyt or Lampard better for the run in?

    Foster
    Huth Kola Walker
    Young, VDV (c), Lamps, Silva
    RVP, Super Mario, Suarez
    Bench: Stockdale, Adam, Djourou, RJ

Look okay for this week? I'd like some form of differential as I'm still trying to catch up 60pts but can't see anybody to drop to make it worth it.

Bent is a great pick this week. He should go bananas today. Feel he has been really close to filling his boots for a few weeks now.

For a point hit? No. Possibly the free transfer but DGW cover pending.

Not when AV have got Liverpool and Arsenal in the following 2 games. Reeks of short termism.

I think he could get a few points but I fancy Wigan to get at least a draw today. Their not that terrible away and their need is bigger.

Just a quickie - Wilshere or Adam? Wilshere potentially tough awayday but likely to move up the field a bit, or Adam, tougher game away but against a potentially leaky D and on FKs and Pens.

Adam for sure. Would be classic Blackpool to score a few at the Lane. And classic Spurs. Shoot on sight policy for sure.

Kol. More attacking option, may be OOP and will get a cleanie if Lescott does.

      VDS> Hart?
VDS has a tough game today and may be rested for the CL if they wrap the league up today.

If they don't win today you've got rid of a top keeper with easy matches.
