Injuries

Since the conclusion of Gameweek Nine, there’s been plenty of news rolling out of Premier League sources and it’s often shared common ground. Managers, and players alike, are taking the opportunity to sing the praises of their team-mates while others are left lamenting their luck with injuries as the BUPA insurance premiums take a battering…

In the wake of him taking the largest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul this gameweek, unsurprisingly Arsene Wenger has taken the time to sing the praises of his mercurial french talent Samir Nasri…

“He is becoming more efficient. I think he has become stronger physically and you judge a player with his numbers…He is quite a complete player because he can run with the ball, he is quick and he is a clinical finisher now. I believe we have a great player in him now…At 23 years old your career starts at the top level.”

Clearly enthusiastic words from the Frenchman on his compatriot and certainly not without merit either. Samir Nasri put in an imperious performance with his seventh goal in seven games, and on the back of it, with two promising home games in a row on the horizon, his investment will likely rocket in the coming days too. It will be interesting to see if Nasri’s rise will temper early investment in Cesc Fabregas who is of course back firmly on the radar following his start at Eastlands.

Across the way at West Ham, Avram Grant will be crossing his fingers on two of his key figures as both Matthew Upson and Frederic Piquionne await a prognosis on recent ailments. The centre-back was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury and Piquionne, a key figure for West Ham to date, also purportedly picked up a knock of his own at the weekend.

After McCleish’s employment of him at the tip of a new diamond formation managed to flummox Blackpool at the weekend, early news yesterday indicated that Alexander Hleb would be an early injury doubt for the coming week. That train of thought has been quickly dispelled and the on loan Belarus international is now looking good to make the derby game with Aston Villa…

“We think he had a bit of cramp as well and that shows that he’s not fully match fit yet. But he showed great signs of his ability at the weekend with some great runs forward and some deft change of feet and he’ll be an asset to us if we can get him in that kind of form. He’s not going to make the cup tie but he should be okay for the Villa game.”

Aston Villa, the opponents in the aforementioned Birmingham derby, have however been less lucky on the injury front and were rocked by the news that their captain Stiliyan Petrov is predicted to be out for at least two months, not good news. This however will open up the opportunity for one of Steve Sidwell, Steven Ireland or Marc Albrighton to step into the void in the Villa XI, perhaps aligning themselves alongside a revitalised Nigel Reo-Coker.

Staying in our second city still and we got a few updates on the state of affairs in the West Brom squad, as well as the chance for manager Di Matteo to single out one of his midfielders for praise. Starting with their Nigerian striker, he had to say

“”We want Peter back as soon as possible but we don’t want to rush him back and then lose him for a long time. We want him to be back in training this week. That is our aim but we will know more later this week.”

With Odemwingie taking to the Premier League like a duck to water upon his arrival, Baggies fans will want to see him back as soon as possible. Though with the player still as of yet not even back in training and with the words of caution above, he has to already be marked as a clear doubt once more ahead of the trip to Blackpool next Monday. Chris Brunt however will likely be around for this fixture if all goes to plan, and he remains a key figure with Di Matteo lavishing praise his way…

“He has become a tremendous asset for us. He’s the kind of player that every week gives you an eight out of ten performance. He is somebody you could go to war with at your side.”

40 FPL points (6,5,6,5,11,7) in his last six gameweeks (including a missed penalty too) are certainly a level of proof on the eight out of ten performances as Lieutenant Brunt dished out the corporal punishment on his opponents. Di Matteo also confirmed that Jonas Olsson (achilles) and Marc Antoine Fortuné (ankle) are to undergo scans on injuries picked up against Fulham forcing them to both leave the field after 53 minutes.

Also lasting a little over fifty minutes at the weekend was Carlos Tevez who picked up a knock in Man City’s 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal at the weekend, the formative news provided after the final whistle by his manager was positive, as we await a full diagnosis hopefully to come later in the week…

“We don’t think it is a bad one, he took a knock in a muscle in the second half but it should be OK”

Young Irish midfielder James McCarthy has been ruled out for 8-10 weeks after picking up ankle ligament damage in the game against Bolton at the weekend. His absence over the coming months will likely open up a spot for one of Mohammed Diame, fellow Hamilton graduate James McArthur or Tom Cleverley to fill the breach. Emmerson Boyce has also been confirmed out for the next two weeks or so, with Ronnie Stam likely to get the nod in his absence.

Simon Mignolet has been playing out of his skin according to manager Steve Bruce, who has warned Craig Gordon that he may yet still have a long wait to regain his place as Sunderland’s number one if the young Belgian keeper can carry on as he has been doing. The same can be said for the likes of John Mensah, Cristian Riveros and even £13m signing Asamoah Gyan, who have all had pitch-time restricted lately due to the form shown by the current Sunderland starting XI.

And finally, not long after picking up their point at White Hart Lane on Saturday the early news rolling out of the Everton camp was that absentee Mikel Arteta “will probably be fit” for the visit of Stoke this coming Saturday. David Moyes also confirmed that Jack Rodwell is set to return to training soon while he expects a boost from getting another full weeks training in the bag for recent returnee Louis Saha.

I'm really surprised at the amount of "how can I get Fab in" posts.

He only got injured he dind't dissapear, GW10 was always the time to get him in after his recovery and 4, 8 even 12 point hits to get him in could cancel out any returns he gets this game week or beyond.

As planned I hung on to Gerrard who has plodded along 6,5,2,5 and have made my free transfer to Fab as was always the plan and can look forward to every point he scores in these 3 fixtures going towards my overall score.

            +1

As much as I didn't really want Gerrard I stuck with him as soon as Fabs got injured waiting for this week! Although to be fair I would have probably made the swap in GW8 had he been confirmed fit 🙂

I made my 2 free transfers last week, freeing up the 0.3m I needed for Fabs. This week is the week for the transfer!

I agree, I had planned this week for ages, I took a hit, but that was just to get Elmo in for Konchesky as I'd had enough. I had plenty in reserve for Fabs.

I brought Nasri in as soon as Fabs was out... it seemed an easy plan to keep 4.5 banked and do Nasri > Fabs when he returns.

Then Nasri goes and gets a boat load of points and put the move into jeopardy.....

just an interesing note for you all....
my best gameweek so far has been Gw 1 with a ranking of 46,000, and since then have had many bad and ok weeks, but i currently sit on 13,492.
Not sure what this proves, but i guess i;m saying its great to have a huge gw from time to time, but keeping constant is very important

P.s. I dont think i have picked my correct captain once, and if I had could be seriously challenging?

Yeah I've had green arrows every week except first week. Not had a massive score so far, 64 being the highest but have been consistent.

That being said I want my first 70+ game week 🙂

I think how bad your bad weeks are is more important than one monster game week (although they are much more fun) as you are likley to have a lot more bad weeks than monsters.

Follow the FFS captain poll every week (the highest player you have in on the list), I did from xmas last season and shot up from 250k to 5kish.

I'm not saying it's the best way to go as everyone should make their own decisions but if you are consistently making wrong captain choices it might level things out a bit.

              My view from previous page:

Fabregas seems to enjoy more protection than others to be honest, and no, I don’t think he will rise tonight, all the transfers in until his protection is lifted do not count to his next rise, so if his injury flag was removed 6-7 days ago, which I believe was the case, he has 2-3 more days protection, and even if it was lifted say yesterday or today or tomorrow (early in other words) then he would still have to amass all the transfers again

            3. Nzogbia (good choice)

            5. Yaya (not so good choice)

            10. Gutierrez (awful choice)

              +1.

Yaya also went off injured at half time at weekend.

Adam & N'Zog are infinitely better options. Take it from a (former) Yaya owner.

Why is Gutierrez an awful choice? He's 4.8 million, a nailed on starter and plays out of his skin. I agree that Adam and N'Zog are better picks for the FPL but I wouldn't call Gutierrez awful!*

              * And thats not me being biased - he is one of* the top wingers in the country

True, I can't say I'd leap at picking him but he isn't bad at 4.8. His lack of set pieces put me off though

the way i see it is your cheap midfielder is'nt gonna perform every week.. VDV nani arteta fabs etc are.. so spend as little as possible on a consistent player.. so in my opinion it's barton who is the best option.. any day of the week!

I reckon if people took the time to read a couple of pages on this forum before asking a question then it would improve this forum as its boring hearing Malouda to Fabs, Gerrard to Fabs, Nasri this and that over and over. At least have something new to add to what has already been said about a humdred times and more since the weekend on this forum alone. Fat lot of good this will do as it will only take another page or sooner before someone says Malouda to Fabs or Gerrard to Fabs or Nasri. Boring it is now. Its not just Arsenal and Chelsea playing every week.

I have been reading this site for the weekend without posting and the Fabs post are getting boring. But Id like to see your opinions on the bale situation esp.

Anyone think Bale could terrorise the Man Utd left back(Nevile or Rafael right)?Surely he will come back from his Holidays refreshed.I ask you as I have two options:

A)Torres to Varney and Bale to Fabregas this GW and in GW11)Nasri to VdV

          Or

B)Torres to Varney and Cleverly to Fabregas and in the near future Odemwingie in for Varney.
          Help very much appreciated guys.Thanks

If you have anything, I would suggest...

BLT with mixed leaf instead of lettuce and caesar sauce instead of mayo. Slightly toast the bread, 3 slices of back bacon.

Make your own burgers with a fatty cut, like chuck, minced. If you have a butcher, get him to do it, and you want 20/80 fat meat. Season with salt and pepper, and if you're not mincing it yourself, don't eat it rare. Eat with a crusty bun and some gorgonzola.

                Steak and spinach.

That's what I'd eat now if I had anything.

Brunt OUT at a time when he is in the form of his life? No.

Alcaraz OUT Simpson IN makes sense in terms of freeing up .5-.6m.

Blackburn have awful fixtures, yes Robinson has been lucky enough to get BP's the last few games, but that will not continue in my view. Hart OUT Jussi IN is a good move as it frees up cash and Bolton rotate okay with Wigan.

You have Nasri as cover this week, I would stick with him and see how they both do against 11 men, at home, and if Nasri is a bit part player, well you know what to do next week. Do Alcaraz OUT Simpson IN this week, and bring in Fab next week for Nasri depending on how both Nasri and Fab do this weekend

GOT THE TICKETS!!! £36 for 2 tickets, but I'm not sure they'll get here in time for the gig if they're posted.

Right, after all that, let's hope Donna hasn't made plans... (!)

Question for Bossman: Just wondering if there's any reason the "next 6 ticker" and "watchlist" only appear in the right hand column on the homepage?

These are two of the best (of many other great) features on the site, and it would be just swell to see them on every page...

dont bail on Bale yet, unless your getting Vdv.....he goes mental with big teams, ask chelski......Cant see Konch and Albrighton doing you any favors soon

          TAKE THE HIT!!!

VDV to Nasri worth 4 point hit? Probably will get back VDV in 2/3 weeks time.

P.S. I am not worried about cash. Just points.

          Cheers,

Not in my opinion. Fabs is properly back now and will eventually eat up some of Nasri's points. Remember a fair proportion of Nasri's goals have been pens in Cesc's absence.

VdV is on great form, is almost fixture proof and I would never take him out for a hit.

Yeah but in the last two games where they've played together there were 2 penalties, both of them taken by Fabregas and again Nasri made assist and scored, both in CL and in PL.

True, but it will affect his points potential none the less. No penalties = less goals.

But does VDV has the penalty duties? Or he lost it after missing one in CL. Hmm.. really tough decision but I am way ahead in my League so I am willing to gamble. Anybody to back me up?

No, basically, particularly for a hit. (now watch nasri go on the rampage over the next few games!)

Man Utd away against W Ham at home where Ars will score 5 or 6? Hmm... Not a tough decision even with the 4 point advantage for VDV.

Possibly, but I can't see him starting regularly for a while to be honest.

Much better options in Arsenal midfield at the moment.

Looking at his form before his injury, i can't see him sitting on the bench for long.. I guess wenger might start him against weaker teams and play nasri in the middle[behind fab]

I subbed bale and drogba out this week for cesc and chamakh. Risky I know with the four point hit, however the combination of chamakh going down when people breath on him in the box and cesc back on spot kicks makes sense to me

          my team

          hart(foster)
          toure, dann, knochesky(foley)
          cesc(c)vdv adam nani (barton)
          tevez, carroll, chamakh
