There’s no doubt our final three differentials of the 2013/14 campaign are very much in the punt category. For many Fantasy managers, it’s now or never, though, and as many mini-leagues go down to the wire, we turn to a trio of midfielders and take inspiration from last season, where West Ham skipper Kevin Nolan fired a hat-trick on the final day of the campaign:

Andre Schurrle

On his day, the Chelsea midfielder has proven to be one of the most explosive Fantasy options around. So far this season, Schurrle has produced a 15-point haul at Stoke, a 20-point return away to Fulham and 12 points in a 6-0 home hammering of Arsenal in Gameweek 31 – seven goals from just 1,303 minutes, compared to Oscar’s eight in 2,046 minutes suggests that with greater game time, the German could flourish further as an attacking option.
After a frustrating end to the season, both domestically and in Europe, Jose Mourinho’s side have the chance to take out their frustrations on relegated Cardiff in Wales later this afternoon. Schurrle – who is available for 6.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 8.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team, – has now started six of the last seven Gameweeks and is likely to retain his spot in the first-team as the Blues square up to a porous Bluebirds backline that has conceded three or more goals in five of the last seven league fixtures.

Yannick Bolasie

Can Palace’s wide man finally break his drought in the final match of the campaign? Bolasie has fired 44 shots over the course of the campaign – the same number as Raheem Sterling, for example, though the Liverpool winger has notched nine by comparison. Indeed, no other player in the Premier League has registered shots that the Eagles winger without finding the net.

Certainly, Bolasie will be hopeful as Tony Pulis takes his side to Fulham – a team that have conceded 83 times this season on their way to the Championship. Having delivered three assists in the last five, he’s picked up in consistency of late but remains firmly in the Fantasy shadow of team-mate Jason Puncheon. Costing a budget-friendly 4.9 in FPL, 4.5 in the Sky Sports game and 1.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Bolasie may finally earn the goal his recent contributions have more than merited.

Emanuele Giacherrini

A peripheral figure for Sunderland over the last few months, the Italian has relied on brief appearances off the bench to remind us of his capabilities. With Gus Poyet confirming his intentions to rotate for the home game against Swansea, Giacherrini’s chances of a start look likely – all the more so given that both Lee Cattermole and Seb Larsson are struggling with knocks in midfield.

The summer signing will be hoping to replicate the form that only recently served up a pair of assists against City in Gameweek 34, followed by a goal and assist against Cardiff 11 days later. Available for 6.2 in FPL, 6.2 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team, Giacherrini’s talents could help the Wearsiders take advantage of a Swans defence which has been breached 11 times in the last 12 Gameweeks, as Poyet attempts to steer his in-form outfit to a fifth successive victory.

Like many I went for the classic dullard move this week, Rooney -> Sturridge with the final transfer. Haven't diverged too much from a conservative strategy and as such I have struggled to break into the top 10k despite being there or there abouts for half a season. Probably still the best strategy but you can only stay still for so long, eventually you need to take risks to progress into the top 1k and beyond.

Not too sure what u make of that rambling but it's something I will think about next season if I find myself in a strong position half way through the campaign

Better than me. I've been switching about trying to find differentials with kind runs of fixtures (rather than go for 'obvious' players such as Yaya) and am having my worst season by far. Will be grateful with a top 100k finish now. Even in my first season, when I hardly had a clue for the first half, I finished around 40k. Ugh.

Ah I think it's also become tougher with the addition of a million players this season. Top 10k of this season is almost like top 5k of previous.

FPL has gotten harder over the years, it's probably caused people to be a little more desperate than normal. Mark for instance was after differentials in the first half of the season which is unnecessary IMO. Be a dullard till u get a good rank then take risks to go further.

The odd thing is a fixture based approach has previously worked for me. But this season it was all about choosing the successful players and sticking with them, even when it went against all statistical reasoning (e.g. Yaya). I lost count of the number of times I ditched a player after a good run of fixtures had brought no returns, and then in their first poor fixture they got points.

Was this season different, or has the idea of playing the fixtures been debunked?

This season has been all about form. If anything a change in strategical approach has been mor important than a change in fixtures eg Pulis going to Palace, Mourinho going defensive, AVB sacked etc. these events caused an remediate impact on certain FPL prospects.

Other than that though, this season was all about form over fixtures.

Forgive my typos I'm on the iPhone. Not too sure why this season was so form orientated. It was weird in that sense but I wouldn't let it put u off a fixtures approach. Arsenals dip I form in the middle of the season was largely due to really tough fixtures.

Not quite true. Assets from Arsenal, Palace, Everton and several others have justified the fixtures over form principle.

              I don't think it's wise to generalize.

GW30 onwards (which was when Everton's fixtures swung for the best), he's given a decent output. I think the issue was we expected much beyond what his price offers.

I think the key is that picking a player for one fixture alone really is mainly down to luck. One has to wait them out over a long-ish period of fixtures, and not just bin them if they fail immediately. Easier said than done with the price changes influencing one's thoughts...

It's important to get your timing right. Indeed you will drop in rank if you take too many risks and you have to be really careful. Examples include going SaS early on and doubling up at the back with say Chelsea or Palace defense. In some ways Yaya and Ramsey were risks early on around these parts.

Just making the sensible popular transfers , combined with captainiing the leader of the poll each week will take you into a reasonable position season after season , especially if keeping an eye on price rises etc

the lack of differentials have given the dullards an easy ride this season.
Next year Saurez may not even be in FPL and if he is will possibly miss games near cl matches.
Yaya may well carry on in the same vein but will be 11-12 million.
Wallcott will hopefully provide ample competition for Ramsey.
Chelsea defence probably still tight but Terry a year older.

For me, my main approach this season has been to keep hits down to a minimum.

I think more than just taking hits, it's the root cause of what leads to people taking hits, which is often overseen. Taking lesser risks and adopting a wait-and-see policy on players. Waiting to see players' form/potential, even if that meant missing out on a couple of hauls.

I've missed out on lots of hauls (Yaya, Ramsey, Suaz, Eriksen et al) but it's also saved me the trouble of jumping on failures.

Yes, there's a definite case for minimising hits. Every season there's a team of reasonably "obvious" players that would get one into the top 10k without any transfers at all. It's food for thought really. Most of those players who weren't obvious at the start of the season become quickly obvious early on.

My main tactic has always been to replace players with poor form and fixtures with those with good form and fixtures. Sounds obvious, but it's surprising how few managers do that.

Yeah its always a bit hairy backing an out of form player with good fixtures. I think this season however there were moments when form players continued to perform when the fixtures turned bad, eg Ramsey, Yaya

I was hovering around 100K before I bought Yaya and some more dullards. Last week I was at 7K

I think this year's differential was that how many of these template players can you have. I mean everyone had some of Suarez, Sturridge, Yaya, Hazza, Chelsea/Arsenal/Palace defense, Lallana, Ramsey, Silva/Nasri. The way of setting your team different was to have more/ all of these and hence, the TV became really really important

I agree that if things go your way a dullard approach can get u right up there. For me injuries have stalled my progress in that regard and perhaps with a little more luck, I'd be closer to your rank. I bet those in the top 100 however have taken a couple of risks at particulR stages in their season.

I play the same way every seson and finishing rank last four seasons has been between 2k and 35th overall

I think this "dullard" view is shooting yourself in the foot big time.

Sure it is awesome when your secret punt explodes, but if you base your strategy around "being different" you will end up being different in the way that you have 6 digits in your rank or more.

Not trying to promote being 'different' and taking 'punts'. Rather choosing your moments wisely, getting the likes of Ramsey and Yaya early and not being too conservative and missing out on hauls

I have had my best season ever and i think that was in part because I took more hits and a few captaincy risks. However they were always calculated. I rarely took a hit that didn't involve an unavailable player and chose my moments with differential (c)'s (eg. Walcott on Boxing Day).

Here's me asking one last time this season. What would you suggest?

    Mannone
    O'Shea Terry** Coleman
    Mata* Nasri Yaya Ramsey*
    Agüero Wickham* Suárez

    Subs: Adrián Puncheon Dann Chester

    Bank - 3.6
    1 FT

Thinking Wickham > Ade or Ramsey > Haz. Meaning I have 4 options:

    A) Ramsey + Ade
    B) Hazard + Wickham
    C) Puncheon + Ade
    D) Hazard + Puncheon

Could also do Mata > Haz + Wickham > Ade for a hit. Though not feeling like taking a hit.

Worth taking a hit for AJ to Sterling?

    Play Ward ahead if Alonso?

    Mannone

Exactly. I think/hope AJ will get some time, so let's say 1 point (worst case scenario). That's Sterling to at least get a goal to go into positive.

    Chasing a ridiculous 42 point lead πŸ˜†

Think my ML Leader brought in Sturridge. He already has Suarez, I don't. Original plan was to bring in Sturridge(C), but now I'm thinking there's not much of a point since he has him. Or is it worth just to have him as captain over ML leader having single points?

Avoid Sturridge and look to bring in someone else and captain them? Like Schurrle/Lukaku?

Thank you! Having a tough time deciding.
