With almost two thousand votes now gathered in the goalkeeper of the season poll, it’s time to move our Team of the Season voting on to the defence.

Our new poll is now open on the front page. You have four votes available to you, allowing you to select the group of defenders that you feel have had the biggest impact on our Fantasy season. As before, you should take into account not only their point returns, but also their value from Fantasy perspective.

Your votes will help shape our thinking for our Team of the Season – with coverage beginning early next week. A midfielders poll will follow tomorrow evening with voting on forwards taking place over the weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If blackpool get relegated this season, and then sell charlie adam- i cant see how they could ever reach the PL again.

        Adam is overrated
Great in fpl and beckham like delivery, BUT, he is also one of the reasons they let in so many goals. He gives the ball away a lot, and can't tackle/defend

Also the reason they've scored a fair few goals. I think he gets a bit too much stick. I know he's not the greatest player ever, but he's done well for Blackpool this season.

Rooney is a tool for responding and for there to be this big media furore about it now, I thought famous Twitter heads would (a) have some kindof filter for any expletives and (b) review all tweets before they go up

I think Rooney's usually are to be honest. The night before last was one of the rare times where it was Rooney himself.

To be honest, I couldn't give a shit what Rooney said. The amount of abuse they get from people on there is pretty bad.

Some folk, including me if he was out obviously, looking at Odem OUT Tevez/Berbatov IN FOR A HIT mind (I am not including people doing it for free), with Odemwingie being so consistant I can't understand this hit, Bolton won't roll over for City and United are going to be fielding a patchwork 11, so may not fire incredibly well, all Berb and Tevez need is one goal to beat the other, fair enough if both score, they need one more than the other etc, but where Odemwingie is in such form and is likely to get a goal anyway, so 4 + 4 + 2 for playing = 10, will Tevez or Berbatov beat 10, very possible, but still a high water mark

Let's not twist the truth. His captains combined have scored 211 points and his highest scoring players every week combined have scored 461 points.

You could have those numbers even if you never pick your best captain and certainly doesn't mean that he picks his best captain almost every other time.

Of course Shefki is correct. If I picked the correct captain half the time, and the other half I selected the second best choice, my average would probably be around 80%.

As a matter of interest, mine is 61% πŸ™‚

How does the bench stat work? I understand that one wants it to be as low as possible. Is it: all bench points (before auto subs) divided by one's total score?

Oooh thanks Garg, I was trying to get an answer to the auto subs thing. Thats a bit lucky then, since an auto sub is often highly lucky and results in a 0 score on the bench, enhancing the bench total.

So Id say only the captaincy one has any real meaning...

Yeah I agree. Bench score has no real meaning.

You could even argue that it's bad to have a too low score as one of your players theoretically could have been ill on the day of the game or so and you would've needed the bench player to come on.

45.7% of 37 gameweeks is 16.9. so that would mean that he picked the right captain in 17 gameweeks. he most likely didn't, and if he did those results in no way show that he did.

They don't show anything anyway only a % of captain points/potential captain points, it is inconclusive as to how many times you actually got the perfect captain or not, but what I'm saying is that in that % you can say ok on average I was right half the time or I got half the available captain points...

Those arent the same things though. Selecting the right captain half the time would result in the stat being greater than 50%. What he has done is double half the available captain points during the season.

I like checking what the denominator is for this stat, as that shows you have a higher scoring player even if you dont captain him (which can be lucky)

The difference between what you're saying and what Shefki is saying might seem subtle, but it really isnt. There is no way you could infer that he selected the right captain 45.7% of the time. If he HAD selected the right captain 45.7% of the time, he would have needed to select a player who scored 0 54.3% of the time, which has not happened I'm sure.

"What he has done is double half the available captain points during the season."

The script doesn't use the doubled score it just uses waht it would be without captain i.e. if you had lampard captain week one you would have got 16 points but the script just says 8/9 or wahtever the highest was.

yeah shows how many times you picked the player who got the most points as captain. and how many points you had left on your bench,

tbh its just a way of showing how unlucky you got or how jammy someone else was, just total bull

The left number is the amount of points your captain got for you and the number of the other side of the / is the maximum you could have had. The bench number is how many points you had on your bench and then how many % they were of your total score.

In general your numbers are not great bhargi, plenty of players reach better captaincy score and 15.6% is a little on the high side for bench score too although they don't matter much.

You've had a great season that could have been better if you had lucked out some more with the captaincies. Well done.

How does your bench score not matter. That's 348 points sitting on his bench over the season. If the playing replacements scored less than that, it's a big concern. Also a high bench score is an indication that you didn't get too many players coming off the bench. 348 points is very high, I thought mine was bad.

They matter but I don't think they matter much.

As I said they're a little on the high side but you don't want them too low either, that would mean you had no one to come in if any of your starters missed out unexpectedly. I wouldn't worry unless you're nearing 20%.

It might also just be bad luck, players scoring well on your bench doesn't necessarily mean you should have played them. Sometimes Wayne Rooney at home to Wigan will be outscored by Ian Evatt away to Fulham, but it's not likely and you can't learn anything from it.

I think he (SAF) has a preference as to what teams he would want to stay up. And if it were me I would rather...for the good of the game, see BLP stay-up as opposed to a Birmingham that plays for draws. That being said it's cool to have ridiculous opinions sometimes, sometimes the most ridiculous things on their face have some deeper actual truth.

He can also use this game to serve numerous purposes, like getting all those unanswered messages from Jorge Mendes and Goncalo Reis off his back, by playing Bebe before the summer transfer market opens.

The fact that Blackpool is 50 miles away from Manchester is a good reason for keeping them up, but not at the expense of Wigan (15 miles) or Blackburn (20 miles).
West Ham, Wolves and Birmingham can go.

Cue the sinking heart feeling when you see Hernandez and Rooney in Blazers. Someone's gonna rape that highline of BLP, my favorites are Anderson and Fabio and of course Berbs. Many confuse Berbatov's patience for laziness or lack of workrate. Other players have to play hard to eat, he's just not one of them. That's not his game. Look at his 5 goal game, Rooney is just another dude passing him the rock.
City are very inconsistent on the road.

    ffs-ers

I've decided to give this manager thing a try, what should I put in my letters/emails?

dont want to do a villas boas and start telling managers what to do so Im just going to write asking for work experience and saying I can work for free.

should i talk about my playing career? played all over at midfield at school, when i got injured I used to do the tactics and help the captain

at uni I played in the hole, had decent vision and didnt score that much but got assists and probably almost every pass before the assist was me. so thats good, means I see what is going on in the game

i played left back sometimes so Ive got defensive experience.

dnt know what im going to do this summer, have ten twenty hours spare a week now. which is why im thinking of getting a job in the industry

      I wouldn't in your position.

Doing those last transfers will be emotional but it's a bit of a nothing week as I don't really have anything to play for, only really trying to break the top 1K but realistically that won't happen.

Nah, this is signoff time for me.

Is Suarez injured or something? More assured than Berba surely? And if Rooney is rested/united field second string they might be pretty poor anyway?

Nah, there's nothing wrong with Suarez for this week - people just fancy Berbatov a lot more! He will almost certainly play (at least IMO) and is still gunning for the Golden Boot, so could well be taking penalties too.

1.2 in the bank. Tevez would seem sensible but I can't afford. Not keen on berba. Might take a punt on a Wolves player or one of the relegation candidates that really need a result. Totally out of touch with all injuries/who has been playing etc. Might just sod it and stick with what i have!

I dont get the Berba love. When last did he play? When last did he score? He is up against Blackpool who need a result.

Tevez on the other hand just scored two CLASS goals, is always a better bet for goals/assists/bonus cos he works so hard, and is up against Bolton who seem to have fallen asleep somewhat.

I know Tevez is away while Berba is at home, but I still think Tevez is a better bet. He probably isnt as explosive (so if you're chasing a mammoth lead Berba may be the way to go), but I cant understand Berba over Tevez unless the issue is price.

Not saying Berba is a better option than Tevez but why the love for him? It's pretty obvious:

      1. Hes gonna play as Rooney & Hernandez will be rested.
      2. He's going for the golden boot.
      3. He's a flat track bully who scores well against poor sides.
      4. Blackpools defence isn't the best.
      5. Blackpool have to score / get a result so will have to go for it leaving then exposed.
      6. United at home have dropped 2 points all season, someone has to score for them.

Yes I can see that. I just think he hasnt played lately, and when he was scoring all his goals he was pretty consistent AND Rooney was playing (I think too many discount this).

Blackpools defence is crap, but in a must win/draw game I imagine they will make it tough.

        Just my opinion, of course!

I've actually done that. At my girlfriend's summer house with no internet access where I am a week or so each summer I take with me loads of player values and make teams with pen and paper. Truly sad behaviour to be honest, but that's me.

Barton has been the ideal cheapie mid but since Carroll left and Taylor starting nicking his set pieces he hasn't done, erm, anything.

            That's a little bit unfair!

He's only 4.8 and he's had 2 goals, 4 assists and about 10 bonus since Carroll left, and crucially he's scored in the games where he was easy to play (apart from Arsenal)

Without looking - weren't both goals and 3 of those bonus in 1 game?

Maybe I'm being a little harsh, but you must admit he hasn't done much in the last couple of months.

Question...Would people agree with the following designations for teams for the final week of play? I guess I'm just wondering where to make that final investment for the last transfers and how different scenarios and matchups might play out...

Teams with nothing to play for:
    Man United (H Blackpool)
    Everton (H Chelsea)
    Fulham (H Arsenal)
    Stoke (H Wigan)
    Bolton (H Man City)
    WBA (@ Newcastle)
    Newcastle (H WBA)
    Aston Villa (H Liverpool)
    Sunderland (@ West Ham)
    West Ham (?)(H Sunderland)

Teams with little to play for:
    Chelsea (@ Everton)
    West Ham (?) (H Sunderland)

Teams with something to play for:
(3rd place and avoid CL qualifying)
    Arsenal (@ Fulham)
    Man City (@ Bolton)

    (Europa League)
    Tottenham (H Birmingham)
    Liverpool (@ Aston Villa)

    (Relegation)
    Blackburn (@ Wolves)
    Wolves (H Blackburn)
    Birmingham (@ Tottenham)
    Blackpool (@ Man U)
    Wigan (@ Stoke)

Just looked at the table again and might have to move Chelsea to "nothing to play for" since they can't be caught by Man City (unless there is a 12 point swing). And I don't really know what to do with West Ham. I mean really there is nothing to play for but I wonder if they need to make some kind of "gesture" for the fans and club. And then there are fixtures like Newcastle v WBA...is there potential there for some crazy score line since there are no ramifications for losing or is it more likely to end 0-0 since there is nothing to play for?

I don't know...just kind of intriguing, especially with the fantasy aspect mixed in.

      Thanks for putting that together.

Not sure what Chelsea have to play for-
West Ham have nothing to play for-
Some of those teams up top would certainly like to finish in the top half of the table.

I've been pondering your last line for a little bit. Do you think that there is a strong incentive for teams like WBA, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Sunderland to finish in the top half? Strong enough to make a difference in this gameweek? And what about Bolton and Stoke who could be passed but really can't climb to a much better position? And is there an incentive for Fulham to catch and pass Everton (or for Everton to try and get at least a draw)?

        Just some thoughts/questions...

Just looked at the money awarded last season and it was approximately £800,000 for each place. So from that perspective a team like Sunderland (with some favorable results) could move from 14th to 9th meaning that they would see an increase of about £4+ mil if they do make it up to ninth. But is even that monetary gain enough to make them push for a win?

My favorite post of this season by the way regarding picking a team at the start of the season (did not "buggumark" at the time).

    Goalkeepers:
    ===========
    1) Do you have 2 x £4.5m keepers who rotate well home and away?
Yes: Team Approved ———No: Start again

    2) Do you have any Goalkeeper over £6m coupled with any goalkeeper less than £4.5m?
Yes: Start again. ———No: Carry on, but see question 1 (above)

    Defenders:
    =========
    1) Do you have more than 2 x £5.5m defenders?
Yes: Too much spent on defence, start again ——– No: Carry on

    2) Does your defence contain any players from the following teams; Blackpool, Arsenal, Liverpool or Wigan?
Yes: Start again ——–No: Carry on

    3) Have you spent more than £6.0m on any defender not called Ashley Cole?
Yes: Start again (See’ too much money on defence’ argument, above) ——– No: Carry on, but see rule 1 regarding more than two expensive defenders

    4) Does your defence have one of these two untested £4.5m cheapies: Al Muhammadi or Van Damme?
Yes; Team approved ———– No: Start again. You must have one of these two. Its the law.

    Midfielders:
    ==========
    1) Does your midfield NOT contain at least one of the following: Lampard, Fabregas, Arteta?
Yes: Definitely start again ——– No: Carry on

    2) Does your midfield contain the M Petrov from Bolton (NOT the M Petrov from Aston Villa)?
Yes: Carry on ——— No: Start again

    3) Does your midfield NOT contain Lampard, Fabregas or Arteta but DOES contain Gerrard?
Yes: Start again (Have you seen their opening fixtures?) ——– No: Rule 1 still applies. Start again.

    Forwards:
    ========
    1) Do you have Drogba?
Yes: Team Approved ———– No: Carry on, but see the next question.

    2) Do you have Van Persie or Rooney instead of Drogba?
Yes: Carry on, but you should really have Drogba though! ——- No: Please give up playing fantasy football as you clearly don’t have a clue.

    3) Is your cheap >£6.5m forward Boselli instead of Doyle?
Yes: Start again ——– No: Carry on

    4) Do I have a Blackpool Striker on my bench?
Yes; Start again ————- No: Team approved

    Generic Team Question
    =================
    1) Do I have any Liverpool players at all, in any position, on my team?
Yes: Start again (See ‘have you seen their first five fixtures’ argument above) —– No: Team approved, subject to fulfilling all other criteria above.

    2) Am I a signed up member of CAR?
Yes: Feel free to rate your team ——– No: Join CAR first and then see flow chart above.

There you have it. The easy way to rate your team without ever needing to post an RMT ever again before the start of the season.
Feel free to add any other classics I’ve missed out.

      4) Does your defence have one of these two untested £4.5m cheapies: Al Muhammadi or Van Damme?
Yes; Team approved ———– No: Start again. You must have one of these two. Its the law.

      2) Does your midfield contain the M Petrov from Bolton (NOT the M Petrov from Aston Villa)?
Yes: Carry on ——— No: Start again
