After casting an eye over Group B’s rank outsiders Australia, we now turn our attentions to Chile. Jorge Sampaoli’s side kick off their campaign against the Socceroos on Friday June 13 at 11pm in the most favourable of their three matches and could be worth the early investment before squaring up to both finalists of World Cup 2010 – first they take on Spain on Wednesday June 18 at 8pm, then go up against Holland five days later at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

After losing five of their opening nine matches, including hammerings against Argentina (4-1) and Uruguay (4-0), Chile chose to replace Claudio Borghi with Sampaoli in December 2012. The latter’s installation sparked a turnaround in form that saw his side win five and draw one of their final seven fixtures, scoring two or more on six occasions, and finish third in their group on 28 points – only Argentina (35 points) and Colombia (30 points) boasted a superior record.

Chile have since played four friendlies under Sampaoli, beating England (2-0)and Costa Rica (4-0) but have also lost twice, tasting defeat at the hands of Brazil (2-1)and Germany(1-0).

Most Starts Claudio Bravo (14), Mauricio Isla (13), Gary Medel, Alexis Sanchez (12), Marcos Gonzalez, Marcelo Diaz, Arturo Vidal (11), Eugenio Mena, Eduardo Vargas (10)

Most Goals Arturo Vidal, Eduardo Vargas (5), Alexis Sanchez (4)

The Key Targets

Sampaoli’s installation to the hotseat ensures we can expect the same high pressing, attack-minded philosophy from the previous World Cup under Marcelo Bielsa. Whilst Sampaoli is more likely to operate with a three-man backline during the tournament, it’s worth noting that he selected a back-four for four of his seven qualifying matches in charge.

Regardless of tactical set-up, there’s no doubt that Mauricio Isla and Eugenio Mena will be crucial to Chile’s chances. Isla has fallen out of favour at Juventus and was handed only 10 league starts this term but is a key starter for his country – both will patrol up and down the flanks, whether as full-backs in a four-man backline or as out-of-position wing-backs in a 3-4-3 formation and are priced at 5.0 and 4.9 respectively in FantasyiTeam. The downside is that the heart of Chile’s defence hardly bodes well for defensive returns – Cardiff’s Gary Medel is utilised as a central defender due to a lack of options, whilst veteran Marcos Gonzalez’ lack of pace will be targeted by opponents.

Currently sidelined with a knee injury, Juventus’ Arturo Vidal is expected to be fully fit in time for the tournament opener against Australia. With spot-kicks also boosting his appeal, Vidal (6.8 in FantasyiTeam) was one of three players to score four times in Sampaoli’s seven qualifying matches and his superb all-round style of play is likely to be looked upon favourably by Fantasy games.

Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas also netted four times for the new manager. Sanchez, in particular, seems to have stepped up a level since Sampaoli stepped in – he had previously failed to score during qualifying under Borghi and has also gone on to score twice in a recent Wembley win over England. Vargas started only three times for Borghi but was quickly installed as a key player by the new manager, though he’s stuttered domestically this season, scoring just three times in La Liga for Valencia compared to Sanchez’ 19 goals and 10 assists for Barcelona. Nonetheless, at only 6.7 compared to his fellow forward’s 9.4 in FantasyiTeam, he could appeal to those on a budget.

The Long Shots

Having started each of the final three group games, playmaker Jorge Valdivia (5.3 in FantasyiTeam), looks to have established himself as a member of Sampaoli’s XI and is expected to get the nod as the most advanced central midfielder. This could see him utilised as a false nine, dropping deep to leave Sanchez and Vargas as wide forwards, though there’s a possibility Sampaoli may opt for a more defensive-minded player against the Spanish – he chose a 3-5-2 formation in a 2-2 draw with the defending champions in September last year.

I think there's foul play going on here to avoid Fair Play rules. They aren't even trying to hide it...

How can you say that? The sanction explicitly stated that they have €60M limit to spend on one player this summer. So, they did just that. How can it be against the rules?

It's not against the rules I think.

PSG would not pay £50m for Luiz. It seems inevitable that Chelsea have given PSG transfer money to help balance the Fair Play books.

Well, I would agree that if the PSG lead were in their senses, they sure would not pay £50M for Luiz, but I don't get why Chelsea would have given them transfer money and how does it help if in the books it is that they've paid £50M.

Care to elaborate? I'm seriously interested to hear what you mean. No jokes.

If Chelsea sell a player for a huge sum, it reduces their net transfer spend, right?

So they could give PSG, say £30m, to add onto their offered fee. It would reduce their net transfer spend and allow them to buy more. I'm sure they'd scratch PSG's back in return...

The world is run by money, and where millions are involved, people will do anything.

Oh, okay, you mean to balance Chelsea's transfer accounts. Okay, then I get it.

Yeah, it actually makes sense, because PSG could, regardless of other things, spend exactly this sum of money, on exactly one player, so that could well be used to avoid the rules.

Expect City to do a similar deal too, then, because didn't they get this same type of sanction? Maybe buying some Liverpool player for £50M? We'll see.

But, hey... maybe they will buy someone from PSG for that price, and the Qataris add some money to that deal? That would, again, make perfect sense.

Actually now that you mention the transfer sale you remind me of how sales and purchases are recorded on the teams accounts. If you buy a player the price is amortised (spread) over the duration of their contract whereas if you sell a player you take the full amount on your books for that year.

                Bear with me now

If Chelsea sold luiz for 50m then they show 50m proffit for the transfer window. If they then turn around and spend 70m on Cavani and sign him up to a 7 year contract then they are now showing net 40m surplus for this transfer and PSG are showing 20m net profit for this window too if Luiz is singed on a 5 year contract.

If PSG are showing net 20m proffit they now have 80m to spend this transfer window.

Just seen this. He's a good manager...brought up the Barcelona way - lots of passing. Brighton were blighted by injury this season, but he still did a good job. Football wise he'd be great for Celtic....my worry would be is he prepared for all the emotional baggage that comes with that high profile role. I think a stronger character that understands the Scottish scene much better may be more appropriate.

He is a top coach though, certainly no bluffer.

David Luiz is immensely bad buy for PSG, as they also have to play CL with only 21 player squad, with 8 home grown players, so you'd imagine that they'd be getting some players who have been schooled in French clubs, such as Hazard. And not Luiz, who is yet another foreigner in the club.

They are already about to lose 2 of their "home grown" players, Jallet and Ménez, and now they spent their whole transfer budget to get a non home-grown player. Insane.

Well, maybe they just fill the team from their academy for the European competitions. Would love to see that, in fact. They have a great youth academy.

It is not 8 home grown players by the sounds of things coming out of city. It looks like it had to b 8 home grown players when teams had a full squad but it might be only 4 now that the squad size is less.

As always the devil is in the detail and is one of the reasons why city are not to fussed about the punishment.

          Yeah pretty sure.

I don't think either City or PSG are overly bothered about it as if either brings it to the courts there is no way Uefa will be able to stand over the rules as they are a clear restriction on trade and go against all competition laws.

Some info on the home grown player restrictions, looks like they have to have 5 home grown http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2066393-manchester-citys-punishment-for-breaches-of-uefa-ffp-regulations-announced

Thanks for the source, but that's Manchester Evening News again. Not the best source.

About the courts, most likely UEFA would lose it, but there's a thing about the self-regulation that makes this more complicated. It's not that easy, especially when international organisations are as strong as UEFA is.

Whether it is easy or not doesn't come into it.

We are talking about billion pound companies up against Uefa who are an bureaucratic organisation of buffoons. Commercial powerhouse wins hands down I reckon.

You are wrong. UEFA is immense, all clubs have accepted these regulations (and sanctions!), and while it is true that some of these sanctions seem to be against EU law, that is undermined by the fact that EU Law is quite policy driven and EU is in full support of UEFA's self-regulation - and FFP. Read here: http://ec.europa.eu/sport/policy/organisation_of_sport/good_governance_en.htm

While in the most recent recommendations the autonomy of sports organisations was noted to be more suspect than before, it was exactly because of the sorts of financial problems that likes of FFP tackle.

Links for EC's open support to FFP:

                http://ec.europa.eu/competition/sectors/sports/joint_statement_en.pdf

                http://www.uefa.org/stakeholders/europeanunion/news/newsid=1586812.html

That is fundamentally what gives the juridical backing precisely to UEFA, and PSG and City would stand very little chance challenging UEFA in European courts.

Can you have any sources for this? According to everything I've read, it is not so. Only Manchester Evening News and Daily Mail say that "City believe that they only need five home grown players".

Btw, here's a reasonably decent article on subject:

Of course they would, because they could have faced even more severe sanctions if they didn't accept. They were all about to appeal it first, really raging about it, and then the possibility of more severe sanctions was mentioned and they calmed down and settled to this deal.

No they wouldn't have. The media and Uefa would like us to think that as the media have jumped on this as a means of moderating the excesses of "new money" clubs but it is totally unworkable as far as I can see and I think that is why City were happy to appeal until the sanctions were negotiated to their satisfaction.

Fwiw City still don't think they have done anything wrong in all of this saying they have zero debt and that there are a lot more established clubs out there who owe banks hundreds of millions of pounds that are getting away off scot free.

FFP will be challenged soon but city don't want to be seen as the bad guys so it will come down to Monaco or someone to challenge it imo.
