World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday One, Day Four

With three World Cup matches on offer this evening, Fantasy managers have plenty to look forward to. First up, Switzerland take on Ecuador in the 5pm kick-off, with Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side looking to maintain the form that saw them top their qualifying group with an unbeaten record over 10 matches:

Switzerland: Benaglio: Lichtsteiner, Von Bergen, Djourou, Rodriguez: Inler, Behrami; Shaqiri, Xhaka, Stocker; Drmic

Ecuador: Dominguez; Paredes, Guagua, Erazo, W Ayovi; A Valencia, Noboa, Gruezo, Montero; Caicedo, E Valencia

For Switzerland, the highly-rated young left-back Ricardo Rodriguez will add plenty of attacking threat from the back, whilst the likes of Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri are tasked with supplying the creativity behind Josip Drmic, who notched 17 times in 30 starts for German side Nurnberg in 2013/14. The one surprisde from Hitzfeld’s line-up is his decision to opt for Johan Djourou ahead of Fabian Schar in central defence.

Ecuador will be looking for front two Enner Valencia and Felipe Caicedo to grab the goals. The latter was top scorer in qualifying with seven strikes, whilst elsewhere in Reinaldo Rueda’s 4-4-2, Jefferson Montero and United’s Antonio Valencia will also be hoping to make an impact on the flanks.

After that, France square up to Honduras in the other Group E game at 9pm. Despite losing Franck Ribery to injury, Les Bleus are highly-fancied in this one – they’ve won four and drawn one of their last five friendlies, conceding just a single goal in the process. Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Mathieu Valbuena owners have every reason for optimism as Didier Deschamps’ side look to get off to a winning start before a midweek meet with the Swiss.

Our late night viewing sees Group F get underway with a clash of the favourites, as Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina go head-to-head. Lionel Messi will surely be sporting the armband for a number of managers for the 11pm kick-off, though there’s no shortage of options on our radars for this clash, with Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic all looking to catch our attentions before the schedule eases considerably for both sides.

        Messi was dreadful yesterday and it was already done and dusted before he was anywhere near scoring his goal. By all accounts Shaqiri was poor too and he got it too.
        
        I believe the odds reflect a player's potential of actually being the MOTM, rather than their likelihood of being awarded it by the fans.

        Just under evens, but you'd expect that with Messi. Yeah, he eventually deserved the MOTM, but the thing is the twitter voting was 100% Messi long before he scored the goal. And he was terrible up until that point. I got Benzema at 4.33 and Shaqiri about the same.

  1) Unknown whether Zemmamouche is No.1 so I would at least wait for lineups to be out but 50/50 for me on whether to sub or not.

A guide to changing formation

I want to change formation what will happen

YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOSE THE PLAYER ON THE LAST POSITION ON THE RIGHT (last 2 positions on right if going 1 forward)

Players are automatically locked in positions that have already played

Whenever a new player is added to a position when changing formation this player is always added to the last position on the right

What can I do going forward to help me

Always set your team up so that your earlier players (eg Brazil) are in the positions on the left hand side of the starting 11 working across in time and date order of games played

  This should be "You will automatically lose the furthest right player of the position you are reducing"
  
  "Whenever a new player is added to a position when changing formation this player is always added to the last position on the right"
  
  Players are added to the left first whether changing formation or not.

      It depends how many empty positions you have. If you change from 343 to 442 but only have one active defender then you will have 3 empty slots at the back that fill up from left to right.

        I'm just throwing a point out there really,
        Epic is about right really , it's when the groups are done that you get better games, I'm just saying that there are better teams out there than some that are playing - it's just the way FIFA set the qualifying criteria,
        It's all about money really in the end not about getting the best 32 teams in the world together - don't get me wrong the Euros are all about cash as well.
        Ive certainly gone a bit cyclical about the whole thing - my boyhood fantasy is not what I thought it should be.

        I agree with having 4 big strikers. Sometimes you'll have a couple that don't score and with a system like this you want big captain options to replace your captain fails.
        
        Also the low-mid price defenders and mids are picking up reasonable points without doing much, so it is all about making sure your captain gets a brace.

Keen to know the magic number people are prepared to roll the dice on in defence if:

A) The on coming player stands a good chance of a clean sheet

B) The on oncoming player is likely to conceed but may accumulate points from blocks, recoveries etc

      You did well having Blind...why did you go for that ? As posted previously it was always my plan to bring the Dutch in for GW2, with two transfer and an extra transfer costing only -3 I couldn't see the reason to play such a "hard" fixture as Spain. Jeez..how wrong can you be...

Asked this last night. From my experience once we are able to make transfers in McDs game it will be likely that those teams that have been eliminated we will no longer be able to select players from this in all likelihood will be teams where we picked up our cheap players from. Therefore when making unlimited transfers going forward will it not be a good strategy to keep hold of some cheapies to allow for more budget on players later in the tournament as the rounds progress. Better to have 1m players stuck on the bench than and a more expensive starting 11 than getting rid of them right?

In Mcd game, what are the views on rubbish team defenders? E.g. I don't expect Iran to keep a clean sheet but how many points from RB is reasonable to expect? I.e. Should I keep a player who has 4 points or sub him for an Iranian?
